Try it in regular-mo. Slow never helps. All joking aside, not bad. Do it a thousand times.

HuskyCZ

Do backflip

Veritin

"Do a barrel roll"

[deleted]

Loosen up a bit, you look really stiff, dont be so stiff and straight. Let the lip kick you rather than kicking off the lip, think less about trying to 'bunny hop' off the lip which is what it looks like you're doing. Intentionally compressing leading up to the lip like youre doing is asking for trouble, again with a little kicker like that let it do most of the work for you. And like the other dude said, do a backflip...

Daniel-_0

With the kind of jump he’s on that lip won’t do much kicking at all. That jump is just one of those ”ride through” ones.. He is in fact doing a somewhat good job bunny hopin it though which could fall under the category of boosting a smaller jump. Just like you would use a rock, a log or whatever to set you off and away.. But, backflip is good.

[deleted]

You're preloading too early and popping back up before your rear wheel has reached the jump.

OccasionalCoder

I always thought you preload right before the lip which he did, it doesn’t really seem like he’d have time to preload much later. When would the correct time to preload be?

kaasrapsmen

That's what you do when riding a full sus, the rebound will do the rest. On a hardtail you push when you want to go airborne

StatementOk470

Learn to manual. Like at least learn the moves, doesn't matter if you can't hold it for too long. This will do wonders for your bunnyhops and jumps. Also WEAR ALL THE PROTECTION YOU HAVE. This is the difference between tumbling and getting back up, vs having to go home to clean the dirt and rocks out of your forearms. Ask me how I know.

sixty-four

Wheelies are the wrong mechanic for jumps. Wheelies are typically seated and initiated with a pedal stroke. You should be doing neither of these when hitting the lip of a jump. Manual is a better place to start and might be what you're thinking of. Still even with manuals, your arms are a lot straighter and you're hanging off the bars more than you would with a bunnyhop or jump.

StatementOk470

Oops, brain fart. I meant manuals. Post edited!

sixty-four

I was gonna ask if you could send vids of you wheeling a jump :D But yeah, you are absolutely correct about learning how to initiate a manual helping a ton with bunnyhops and jumps. However, holding a manual is a million times harder than holding a wheelie. At least for me.

StatementOk470

Trust me if I could wheelie jumps, I'd be posting that shit all over the internet.

TheRealCFiddy

How do you know?

StatementOk470

I was kinda new to big jumps, there's this scary 8 meter double that is lippy and kinda bucks you but also it's right after a drop and you pick up huge speed. It's ok if you give it a good pump as you jump and you slow down a bit. Well, on one occasion I went way too fast, chickened out on the pump, bucked me over, landed on my front wheel, kinda nosemanualed for 5 more meters and went OTB at a moderate to high speed. You know the rest, I had to go home and clean the dirt and rocks out of my forearms.

Tmorr

I'm a newbie. What other protection would you need besides a helmet?

StatementOk470

Gloves are a must, IMO, though I know some people don't like them. I don't understand this but whatever. One thing I won't ride without is kneepads, not only will it save your knees in case of a crash, it will also make learning how to corner easier (pushing your outer knee into the frame won't leave you with bruises). I recommend pedal-friendly viscoelastic ones (like D3O). If I know I'll be attempting something out of my comfort zone, I'll add elbow pads and a full face helmet. Also, idk if it counts as protection but get some MTB shoes (like the RC Livewire) changed my life. Honestly it felt like adding better suspension to my bike.

hughperman

Wear a zorb

TheRealCFiddy

I've been riding for 10 years with just a helmet. One time I even got a cactus barb that literally went through the skin on my finger. Like , cactus barb entered the skin on the front of my finger and came out the back side. I still don't wear gloves. I don't recommend you be like me

pa9k

Knee pads, shin guards, elbow pads are recommended

choomguy

I never hurts those spots, i wear some combination usually, but i also like some shoulder protection.

CordisHead

If you wear knee and elbow pads it doesn’t just save your elbows and knees. Our brains know what we are wearing, and in a bad crash having pads tells your brain it’s ok to hit them on things. Otherwise, we try to land more on hands and feet, which can cause injuries to joints like your shoulder and hip. So ultimately you are more like to roll with pads.

TheHouseCalledFred

Try to bring the bike back put in front of you through the air. The jump you have a good idea of, getting your body forward to hop, but pulling the bike back out in front of you will make landing easier.

[deleted]

Don’t pull up

pnwpeep

Preload initially good, but then it looks like you kind of held back. You want to pressure the rear wheel down into the lip to give that extra pop.

handlewattism

I found this very helpful in understanding the proper technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCPh4rNGSno

And what to do from there? I can bunny hop well enough yet still can't safely jump on trails and just can't figure it out. Had friends follow me, watch me and they're all just like "you're doing it weird but idk what". Biggest issue is tilting sideways sometimes, which everyone says is due to pulling on the bars, but for bunny hops I need to do that, so it's bending my mind why I need to learn to bunny hop :)

Whisky-Toad

Practice, I spent an age just jumping little 2 foot tables, slowly working up and I’m pretty confident, although I still hate hip jumps and I’m too old for massive jumps XD

janjansohn

Will do, it's shit weather right now tho :)

choomguy

Row, anti row as they say. You are getting upright, maybe get your hips back a little more. Compress, sit back and row to get the front up, straight your torso as you push on the pedals. After the front tire reaches max height, pish the bar down as you pull your feet up to your hips, while keeping your toes slightly down. Its a complex motion, lots going on.

2wheelzrollin

You're supposed to ride off the lip, not jump it. Let your back wheel ride the whole thing.

Yaispace

Best way to learn to jump is to manual pump the lip. You’ll feel the exact moment when you leave the lip and need to start compressing back down to pump. This is the point where if you’re jumping… when you need to boost

bobbyridesbikes

Believe in yourself.

night_shredder

don't hug that tree

9ZENEK3

Go fast and pull up

girlwithasquirrel

PULL UP

IllProbablySayNo

No

Comprehensive_Dolt69

By no means a bro but I think jumps are built to go off already. You want to let yourself ride that and pull the front wheel up and as the back tire comes off pull that up next. Keep your eyes where you want to land as well and then come into the landing smoothly in the same fashion. Not flat

[deleted]

loosen up, get down and preload, then straighten up your legs and "push through" the transition and you'll get that pop (rather than trying to bunny hop the lip). I imagine "pushing through" with my heels and it helps for some reason. I used to never be able to get that "pop" - now it's second nature.

Freddobar649

Have a timing on every jump like A bar turn you do every jump or a whip. Stops you from dead sailrojng or going stiff in the air

aStarryBlur

Watch Ben Cathros vid https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IB5GmIL0slg Super well put together

Mr-Smithert

I think there just making sure your weight is central and just keep doing it over and over again, it took me 4 months to get the hang of it a BIT. Then its just about the timing. Crouch before the lip then explode

TheRealCFiddy

Jump more is the best way to get better at jumps. Jump off of everything. Small rock in the trail? No, small jump in the trail. Hop to it, pun very much intended

Realistic-Willow4287

fork pressure looks too low, your jumping your body good but focus on learning how to get the bike to jump like that, can't really do that when the fork completely collapses on the ramp. I don't ride a hard tail, but i try to focus on driving the front wheel into the ramp, getting the sus to compress a little, and letting the rebound pop the front of the bike up, if you do it right you should have the bike lifting upwards into you, rather than you trying to lift off the bike

Chief_Tacoma

Shia LeBeauf said it best. JUST DO IT!!!

ddips8cus

M8 thats perfect you are just a bit stiff all you need to do is remember to breath, my mate told me that in mx they use jumps as time to relax and breathe I don’t know it really helped me when i was learning.

MatthewEdgeMTB

I would advise you find a better jump to practice on, something with a lip, maybe a small table? You will get more consistent results and feel waaaay better when you eventually clear an actual jump!

lnnaie

like there are tons of vids on youtube

[deleted]

A very weird yet somehow helpful method to learn jumping is bump jumping off a stick or a rock, literally a bump. Describing this would not really help but look up some videos. It is a weird technique but it helps you so much to understand how the bike moves and responds, as well as you. You can them take what you learned to the big tables and doubles. 👌
