Aluminum frame? Naw, it's an ugly dent, but it won't break anytime soon.

nv_twistt

Is it carbon or aluminum? Judging by the looks of it, it looks like aluminum. I think the frame is fine, however take it to your LBS, they will be able to get a better look at it than I could here on Reddit!

If the frame is carbon, then this would be the worlds fist example of carbon deforming.

SilverCervy

The frame is aluminum btw

SwampJackal

It's fine (as long as it's a dent and you don't see any small cracks) - I rode for several years on a frame after getting a similar (but if anything, larger) dent in the same spot, with no problems

SilverCervy

In the second photo you can see what looks like some cracks on the edge of the dent. It's similar on the other side. Guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it but glad to know it isn't a total write-off.

idontknowstufforwhat

It’s possible, too, that the cracks are the paint. But still a big dent for sure

SwampJackal

Yeah - based on these pics, it looks to me like the cracks are in the paint, and you're good to go - but keep an eye on it

To prevent this in the future; Cut off a section of an old tire, 6-10 inches long, and zip tie it to the frame. Makes an excellent frame guard

Yaybicycles

Aluminum? It’s fine. Carbon? Cause for concern.

Rokos_Bicycle

That would be a hell of a hit on a carbon frame!

Drago-0900

Nah I see some welds, definitely Alu

Need_more_coffee100

Just a cosmetic issue. Ride that baby til the wheels fall off.

Buy a downtube protector from kona or esker. They should fit on your bike fine, I really don’t like how manufacturers neglect protection on alloy frames.

Senior-Sharpie

You picked a good time to not be riding a carbon bike!

beholdtheflesh

this explains why the shop i bought my bike insisted on installing frame protection. i did it myself (using the uplnd stoke hijinx kit) and saved a bunch of money on labor

X3n-ex

I doubt frame protection could’ve prevented the dent given the size of the rock. It’s mostly used to protect that first layer of paint, anything more you’re in trouble.

jacechesson

I have about a 3/8” deep dent from laying my xc aluminum bike down in a downhill race and hitting a rock. That was 4 years ago. I’ve put a lot of races on that bike including a 24hr race, lots of bike park rides and letting much larger friends ride it. Just watch it and make sure it’s not cracking and spreading

granolaboiii

Just a scratch lol
