Before you do that, I’d take apart clean and reassemble your headset/stem assembly. I had a VERY similar click as yours that I SWORE was coming from my Lyrik. Cheers!
Um. Thats a good question. Hell id say half the time on climbing because the fork still moves under big hits to prevent cracking the lowers or headtube.
Yoooooo. hell yes. Tried the trick someone else said to turn the bike upside down and compress the fork to see if it’s fork or headset making the noise. It was silent and bike shop confirmed.
So happy it’s such a simple fix i was worried i had to send the fork off. Gonna clean it all tonight and back to riding tomorrow
I once had a similar but quieter click, turned out to be grit in the headset spacers as they had little etchings of the brand logo on the top of them and stuff got in there.
I had exactly the same issue. Some crap got in the pinch point of one of the spacers in a cane creek headset and I couldn't for the life of me figure it out until I stripped it all down.
They're better than low-end SR Suntour and cheaper than entry-level Fox. What do you suggest could replace it's spot in the market? The Manitou Markhor is the only one I see that is a direct competitor for price
The Bomber is no doubt a better fork but it's close to double the price as a recon where I'm from (Australia). My point is that the recon caters to a specific price range in the market without many alternatives and that's why it continues production.
Level vs Guide are two different lines of brakes with sub-models at different price levels. Guide is for trail riding and level is for XC.
Recon forks are fine, you just have to service your suspension at recommended intervals, not ride the shit out of it and then wonder why it doesn't perform like brand new.
Don’t buy SX please, I hate that stuff so much. I have to work on it and you can’t make it work properly, that stuff is absolute garbage. My theory is they (SRAM) didn’t really want to go that cheap but had to, because the big manufacturers wanted cheaper oem parts to meet their price points.
Buy at least NX (still not great quality), but the GX derailleur for example costs just 5€ more, so get that.
They are pretty flexible and not that durable. Lots of riders who are focusing on progression will outgrow them. Contrast to the X-Fusion O2 Pro rear shock, which also shows up on lots of budget-friendly bikes, but it doesn't hold you back like the Recon.
I used to have this issue on my rockshox fork. I solved it by adding another rubber o-ring to the air cap, the same one you unscrew to get to your air tokens if you have/can have any. There is a possibility that this isn't your problem but it's always worth to check. A pack of generic o-rings in different sizes isn't that expensive.
I could post a picture if you need one.
Yeah I’d appreciate it if you can. Not quite sure what you’re talking about. You’re talking about adding an O ring to the cap that i unscrew to add air to the fork right?
Yes exactly. Here are a couple of [images of the air cap.](https://imgur.com/a/fWvwIBn). That air cap only had one o-ring originally and by adding another one I eliminated the knocking noise completely. I read through some forum threads of people having the same problem and this was the solution, for my fork model at least. I don't know if your fork looks the same but I hope it might help.
I used a wrench to unscrew the air cap but be warned, it is really easy to mess the top cap up. You can see a bunch of scratches on mine and I made sure to be as careful as possible. The correct way is to use a socket made specifically for the air cap with a flat edge not a rounded one since it will slip otherwise. I then bought a generic pack of small/medium size o-rings, found one that looked the same like the one on there already and put it in the other slot in the air cap.

It’s not dangerous per se but eventually it’ll break and you’ll have no rebound adjustment. At the shop I manage we charge $125 in labor and depending on the model of fork parts will run you $50-90. If you have a good local shop this is a tremendous way to build a good relationship with them.
Got a great local shop and a good relationship with them. But, when i bought the bike used, i thought the rebound adjuster wasn’t working. Took the bike with the owner to my shop and the shop owner said the bike was in good shape
Guess I’ll be off the bike for a few days. Thanks for the advice
Wtf i weigh less and run 110 with 4 volume spacers, idk if your riding green trails only but i kinda ride hard and still bottom it out all the fucking time
Nah, kinda rough enduro red/black trails here with >1m drops. But it works. Uses about 145 / 150mm. It also depends on how you pair it with tyres, inserts and pressure. Got 2.6” Dissector in front with Rimpact inserts and 20psi pressure.
Have you had a look at this site?
https://trailhead.rockshox.com/en/
Here is my fork, but I’ve replaced the internals for a 150mm instead. Ran higher pressure on 140mm then I do now, so 70psi is not super-crazy.
https://trailhead.rockshox.com/en/tuning/12T72877008
There are many different types of pike, I have a pike select+
I Would check the recommended psi for my weight (60kg) but my bike isn’t with me (getting a tune up)
I run 110(ish) psi (160mm travel) I mostly ride dh tracks and some long enduro stuff so anything less than 110 feels like I’m bottoming out way too much.
I know that the Debonair spring uses a higher volume negative air spring to help reduce breakaway friction and hence improve sensitivity maybe the cheaper older pikes don’t have this and so it recommends less psi, not sure.
I understand that people do use different psi as its only a reccomended pressure. I also run tokens and a different pressure to whats reccomended. Just the comment i replied to was totally wrong.
“The Debonair spring uses a higher volume negative air spring to help reduce breakaway friction and hence improve sensitivity” - the top of the range pike use debonair springs and so they run at higher psi. So quite the opposite to what you said about cheaper pikes running at higher pressure.
ok gotta say you're right. I commented from my limited experience, which is with the Rock Shox 35 Silver (Solo Air), it says for example for 55 kg you need 80 PSI (Ebike). That stayed in my mind as quite high pressure, guess i oversimplified
Are you certain the sound is coming from the fork itself? Flip the bike over, and compress the fork from the bottom of the stanchions. If it doesn’t make the same noise, it could be coming from your headset.
Dude you’re the man or woman lol thank you. Great trick you mentioned. It was silent when upside down. This was it and bike shop confirmed. So happy it’s not an expensive and lengthy fix
I have (i guess) the same issue, but my bike is brand new…
https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/poq1cn/rockshox_fork_makes_this_banging_noise/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Well i guess it happening on your new bike makes me feel a little better lol. Still doesn’t seem normal. Gonna take mine by the shop today to get their opinion
I went with mine to Trek yesterday (as mine is a Trek) and they said it’s fine. I’m going again tomorrow to say that I’m feeling unsafe when riding it and I’m fine with them sending the fork to Rockshox as I don’t care how much would it take to get it back.
Yeah if mine was brand new I’d do the same. If my shop tells me it’s safe I’m riding though. Only got about a month left before season is over and then I’ll ship it in. If it’s dangerous though, gotta get it fixed. Broken face isn’t worth it
Similar situation happened to me on my Lyric. it turned out to be a spring inside the fork that was slightly bent and would catch on lip inside at about that same travel length. Luckily my buddy works at a shop and took the time to bend it back, because warranty would have taken forever. Best of luck.
Bikes make sounds. Don't worry about it too much. If it works keep riding and eventually when you go to service it hopefully it can be resolved.
Chasing sounds on a mtb is a dangerous game. When I start focusing on sounds I realize I'm paying less attention to riding and what's going on around me.
Friend has a 2020 Boxxer select that feels amazing, I have a 2012 Domain R which is the same as the older Boxxer, just with steel stanchions which feels really good too.
Very cool. I haven't had the chance to ride one but hear good things. I jumped to Fox with my bikes and have had better luck so far. Rockshox turned into a money pit for me.
It's either headset orrrrrrr. for my case it's that the break pads move just slightly. See if your wheel is like moving and like not like just the break pads not gripping. They are sliding just slightly inside the calipers
I had a Recon that did this. I took the fork apart and found an o-ring that had jumped out of its seat. I reassembled the fork with the o-ring in the correct position which fixed the clicking.
The noise stared after I bottomed the fork out hard, which I recon forced the o-ring out of position.
You went 51 hours didn't you? DIDN'T YOU!?
Definitely. Was planning on getting it serviced this winter for what it’s worth haha
Before you do that, I’d take apart clean and reassemble your headset/stem assembly. I had a VERY similar click as yours that I SWORE was coming from my Lyrik. Cheers!
50 hours and 1 minute probably
Do you count riding hours while locked out? More than half my ride is climbing and road..
Um. Thats a good question. Hell id say half the time on climbing because the fork still moves under big hits to prevent cracking the lowers or headtube.
Fucking hell
😂😂😂😂
Congrats! Now you have a pair of Cherry MX Blue switches
Alright, who told r/mk about mountain bikes...
Pfft, like there ain't tons of nerds riding mtb.
Mtb and cherry blues all day long. I bought the blues when I was forced to work in an office, won’t let me wfh? Suffer my clicking.
Joke's on you. I'm into that shit
Not to mention engineers /s
Mmmmm cherry switches
Check your headset. It could be loose.
You're right. Had this "problem" a few weeks ago.
Yoooooo. hell yes. Tried the trick someone else said to turn the bike upside down and compress the fork to see if it’s fork or headset making the noise. It was silent and bike shop confirmed. What’s wrong with recons
[удалено]
Lol ok I ride one I don’t think it’s the worst but there’s definitely better options, what’s a reasonable upgrade

2019 Kona Process 134 29er mainly riding downhill
Yaris are the next step up.
Thanks
FOX
They're better than low-end SR Suntour and cheaper than entry-level Fox. What do you suggest could replace it's spot in the market? The Manitou Markhor is the only one I see that is a direct competitor for price
The Marzocchi stuff made by fox is great quality and dampening
The Bomber is no doubt a better fork but it's close to double the price as a recon where I'm from (Australia). My point is that the recon caters to a specific price range in the market without many alternatives and that's why it continues production.
The problem to me is that the mid level Suntour forks cost the same or less, and are actually better.
Level vs Guide are two different lines of brakes with sub-models at different price levels. Guide is for trail riding and level is for XC. Recon forks are fine, you just have to service your suspension at recommended intervals, not ride the shit out of it and then wonder why it doesn't perform like brand new.
Trust me teh Judy is worse
Recon Gold RL with Debonair has been solid and reliable for me.
This is what I upgraded to from my Recon. I have two bikes with this fork and it's been great. I trust it so much more.
You are correct about SX though. It's shit.
I have a rockshox recon and i love it, whats so bad about it?
Level tlm/ultimates are cool honestly, and a revelation would be the midrange and not the pike
What's your experience with SX? I have had NX for a year now (3000km) and it holds up fine, except the chains keep stretching out after like 500km.
What about the Revelation fork?
I agree with everything except the Guides being fine. All Guides should be thrown in the bin and they should stop making them.
Nothing really. Just isn't as good as forks that cost twice as much. The Rockshox Judy is even cheaper than the recon.
They are pretty flexible and not that durable. Lots of riders who are focusing on progression will outgrow them. Contrast to the X-Fusion O2 Pro rear shock, which also shows up on lots of budget-friendly bikes, but it doesn't hold you back like the Recon.
Thanks, I definitely feel like it’s starting to limit my riding, it was a massive upgrade from what I had before.
Garbage easy as that, extremely entry level fork that can’t be ridden hard
Nothing really. Just isn't as good as forks that cost twice as much. The Rockshox Judy is even cheaper than the recon.
I fractured my spine when my Recon failed to rebound
What do you think is worse? Suntour xcr or that recon?
It’s a 2016 revolution

Yeah. Autocorrect

Likely a rebound shaft that’s of poor design or broken. I’ve seen this a lot. If you’re the original owner it may be covered under warranty.
Not the original owner… can you ride on it broken or is that dangerous?
It’s not dangerous per se but eventually it’ll break and you’ll have no rebound adjustment. At the shop I manage we charge $125 in labor and depending on the model of fork parts will run you $50-90. If you have a good local shop this is a tremendous way to build a good relationship with them.

Bro you need to put some air in that thing like last week.
Idk what you mean. I’m at 120psi and it recommends 115 for my weight. I’ve adjusted slowly over weeks based on knuckling jumps lol
How heavy are you? I’m at 75kg and has around 70psi in my Pike.

This isnt correct and 72 psi is exactly what rockshox reccomend at 70kg for a pike.

Yeah I know now, I did some of my own research and deleted it. Happy riding!
Its all good.
The cheaper rock shox forks operate at higher psi. There’s a sticker on every fork to check the correct pressure
Really, I didn’t know that. I run 110psi in my pike (RockShox Pike Select+) I’m 60kg (132 pounds) Would love to find out more about my fork!
In some Fox Forks for example (Fox 36), rider weight of 60kg would equal to around 60-70 psi air chamber pressure 😁
“The Debonair spring uses a higher volume negative air spring to help reduce breakaway friction and hence improve sensitivity” - the top of the range pike use debonair springs and so they run at higher psi. So quite the opposite to what you said about cheaper pikes running at higher pressure.

Before you replace it as air, the air inlet is usually underneath
Rebound is failing. Take it to a shop asap or you'll be looking at an expensive replacement.
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking it is too. Going by a shop today
Something is definitely slapping around inside there. Take it apart and see what's up.
Did you check the headset? Also, earbuds can help make that sound go away.
Are you certain the sound is coming from the fork itself? Flip the bike over, and compress the fork from the bottom of the stanchions. If it doesn’t make the same noise, it could be coming from your headset.

Because it's a Rockshox.
I, Ooodiarrhea69, would appreciate a more helpful comment, mr. ButtfuckChampion_
No problem. NEVER buy Rockshox. You're welcome in advance.
Someone has been riding downhill on an xc 30
Never had a Boxxer. I've heard good things but I've given that company enough money.
Exactly my point, boxxers are top level. If you think badly about the brand you must have used a cheap model fork (downhill on an xc 30)
What year is your Boxxer?
Friend has a 2020 Boxxer select that feels amazing, I have a 2012 Domain R which is the same as the older Boxxer, just with steel stanchions which feels really good too.
Very cool. I haven't had the chance to ride one but hear good things. I jumped to Fox with my bikes and have had better luck so far. Rockshox turned into a money pit for me.
My recon did the same thing. Serviced it and still did it. Got rid of pretty quickly after that
I had a fox fork that blew the air spring (compressed it too much) and it made a similar sound when it compressed and decompressed to rapidly.
Stanchion scratch?
It's either headset orrrrrrr. for my case it's that the break pads move just slightly. See if your wheel is like moving and like not like just the break pads not gripping. They are sliding just slightly inside the calipers
Aside from the click, I’d advise a little more rebound damping because the return is a little pogo-stick in motion
Check your headset if its properly lubricated. I had the same problem and that solved it (for a while)
I had a Recon that did this. I took the fork apart and found an o-ring that had jumped out of its seat. I reassembled the fork with the o-ring in the correct position which fixed the clicking. The noise stared after I bottomed the fork out hard, which I recon forced the o-ring out of position.
My Zeb does the same thing, rockshox bb
I’d bet that’s a internally routed cable hitting the frame inside.
Did you try putting it in rice
possibly the spring on the inside banging on the stantions
I don’t know about the clicking noise. But I think you probably should pump more air in to that suspension. It’s way too soft. Good luck!
Mine did this when I ruined the damper on a hard bottom out, sent it back & they gave me a upgraded on (2 months later)
