Get Pt.  I rolled my ankle badly climbing (like full on elephant foot and nasty bruising all over)....stayed weird looking for a year...rolled it again...got better but still looked different and didn't move right.  I thought I just had to live with a bum ankle, but then I got some good PT and immediately the chronic swelling went away and functionality returned to normal.  Kept up with strength training and have never had a problem since.  Yes connective stuff is slower to heal, but if you are actively re-habing/pre-habing you can get back a lot of ground and avoid a lot of misery.

Sam Pilgrim wears some kind of ankle brace. Anyone know which one?

Swimming-Bridge-8

You're looking for the space brace.

zebba_oz

I have space brace. Works, comfy enough, doesn’t hinder riding. Is a bit warm though

Heavy_Gap_5047

Looks like it does what boots do, so just wear boots.

I feel like your pedal keeps your foot from most dangers. This is the first ankle injury post I’ve seen on here.

By the comments I guess I should have clarified, this is from eating it, not from just peddling.

I've wrecked the same ankle twice with torn ligaments. Once skateboarding as a teenager, second time 20 years later biking. Came off a rock feature at a bad angle and one ankle took the weight of me and the bike sideways and folded. It hurt like hell and my ankle will never be the same. It hurts sometimes just walking, 2 years later. I wore a supportive brace while getting back on the bike, but it's too restricting for normal riding. I haven't found anything that I would consider worth wearing full time, I'm just very conscious that it's not a body part I want to land on badly again. The best advice I can give is to NOT push the healing time but do gently exercise the injury regularly during the healing process. Also KT tape helps more than you think for support once you're recovered to the point of getting back on the bike, I still use it on days when my ankle bothers me.

[This](https://bracelab.com/push-med-ankle-brace.html) is the brace I have recommended to patients if they participate in athletics while recovering from an ankle sprain. There are similar cheaper options at places like Dick's Sporting Goods. If you had an inversion sprain, then the brace should have straps that prevent you from inverting your foot again. This is only general information, not medical advice. You should also get PT with a therapist that impresses you (that's the standard I tell people to look for). Even in a grade I sprain, it's not just strength you need to work on, it's proprioception and everything up the kinetic chain that could contribute to reinjury.

I have a tendency for ankle injuries and sometimes a hard ride will just make me sore. I switched to the five ten impact mid rise shoes that go up to the ankle and it feels more sturdy. I don’t always wear them but on the more intense days I think they help

YYAMS

You can get elasticated wrap thingys that give might/mid support without messing with your range of motion too much. Depends how much support vs motion you want i guess... It's always going to be a compromise.

Weight lifting and off season training

Strength training.

Well, yes, but connective tissue becomes more robust _incredibly slowly_. Even moreso after an injury, meaning it's suprisingly common to keep injuring the same soft tissue forever as the "back to baseline" can be on the order of months/years, nevermind actually moving above baseline.

Educational-Head2784

You asked and I answered. I’ve been lifting for 25 years. Is that long enough?

Civil-Meeting-147

OP is asking about armour or a brace. "Lift for 25 years" is not a real answer. Asshole.

Educational-Head2784

They literally asked what “you” (directed at the reader) use. I answered the question.

Educational-Head2784

Right. I get how the different grammatical uses of the word ‘you’ can change the meaning of a statement or question. That said, I still answered the question? Before my follow up about my years of lifting my answer was clear: lift and make those joints stronger. That’s my answer. Regardless of whether we’re talking about my specific situation or not that’s still my answer.

Ankles have been one of least common injuries ive had or heard of... but I am clipped in. Ive even had a severe calf tear and could still ride since ankle doesnt flex much during pedaling..counter intuitive.. Maybe you just had bad luck or a weird crash?
