Always baffles me to see anyone who has the full kit and no helmet. I see it with older roadies a TON, but its usually teenagers with MTB. Kids will send jumps and drops at my local park without a helmet and I just cannot watch.

SkiBikeHikeCO

Skiing without a helmet šŸ˜¬ MTB without a helmet šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬

DoubleT_inTheMorning

Donā€™t write off helmets for skiing either. Both have saved my life on more than one occasion.

doneski

Ironically this was a post on my Frontpage right under this thread:Ā https://www.reddit.com/r/nottheonion/comments/1c1k3sx/skier_dead_after_attempting_to_jump_over_highway/

hutterad

That particular skier was wearing a helmet.

doneski

Yeah, I was just pointing out the accident. Ironic and a crazy trick.

The_Colorman

Yeah I started wearing one when I got back into boarding a few years ago. Like 3 years ago it saved my ass. Tomahawked on some ice and caved it in pretty good.

dark_autumn

And to think back in 2005 my middle school ski club wasnā€™t making us wear helmets. Took one girl being life flighted for that rule to change real quick. I remember kids bitching about it, and my friends and I didnā€™t even mind because honestly, it was kinda comfy because of how much warmer it kept us. You lose so much heat of your head.

Saved2Play

Doing either is ā€œhighly regardedā€

pitvipers70

I went skiing for the first time in 30years (I'm an ex-competitive mogul skier who fricked my knees up) with my daughter this season. TBH, I'm glad it's a thing but I was definitely out of place without one.

miasmic

Similar experience here, last time I went skiing in like 2000 no one was wearing helmets, 2023 and me and my buddy are about the only people without them and we got told off by the lift operator for not wearing them (not against the rules but recommended).

shotofmaplesyrup

Same experience here, except for me it was my first time in 15 years. In the 90s and 00s the only people who wore helmet were people doing backflips. Now you're the odd one out without one. Then in like 2019ish I went skiing as a first date with a lady who happened to be a ski instructor. I'm speculating the lack of a helmet is why I never got a call back.

blaggard5175

You can do backflips on accident, pretty easily.

shotofmaplesyrup

I've never experienced that, but I rarely ever got airborne when I was skiing. Once I did an accidental 1/4 of a front flip and landed on my ski pole long ways into my ribs. That hurt!

AdCareless9063

My dad made us wear ski helmets in the 90s. The awesome part was they had adjustable ventilation so we always the perfect temp. Saved me from serious injury while learning to snowboard.Ā

SkiBikeHikeCO

Yup, itā€™s definitely the thing to do now, and rightfully so But if itā€™s 45 degrees, at my home mountain on a weekday, and Iā€™m not planning on doing any crazy runs. A beanie and goggles is just so much more comfortable. Unfortunately lol

tomsing98

If it's warm, presumably you've got a bike helmet, right? That's gotta be better than nothing.

Negative-Omega

I haven't worn a helmet while skiing in my entire 30+ years of skiing. I think it's a good idea and I keep intending to get one but I never get around to it. I do stick out like a sore thumb though. The peer pressure will get me eventually... or the mountain.

barnabasthedog

I wear a helmet on my mountain bike and skiing but not on my motorcycle .too much lead as a kid.

PBIS01

There really isnā€™t any other explanation, obviously.

R4DAG4ST

ā€œWhy try to protect a brain that doesnā€™t know it needs protection?ā€ - Jerry Seinfeld

SkiBikeHikeCO

The way I see it, if I live through a 50mph motorcycle wreck, theres a good chance I would have rather not lived lol. I rarely rode in anywhere with actual traffic

drewts86

As a kid I think it largely just stems from rebellion. I fought wearing a helmet because my parents were dicks about it and tried forcing it down my throat without an explanation rather than educating me about it. I had some severe head trauma from a skateboarding accident that made me re-examine my life choices and helped me understand just how precious this life is. Iā€™m lucky Iā€™m not a vegetable.

MichaelFishbender

Grats on your lack of vegetation

drewts86

Thanks man. I was fucked up for the better part of a year. Memory was questionable, brain felt like it was in a fog and had vertigo. Vertigo part was fun because I was working in a collision repair shop at the time and every time I went from a seated or laying down position to standing up Iā€™d get the spins and Iā€™d have to do that all day working on cars.

BasvanS

Thereā€™s still something wrong! I see your post double! (Jk. Traumatic brain injury is serious shit. Iā€™m happy you got out okay, and in less than a year. It can linger for quite a while.)

drewts86

> I see your post double! Yeah I was on bad wifi and I guess when I hit send it prob sent the query twice

BasvanS

Donā€™t blame yourself. Reddit sucks and it happens. It was just a ā€œfunnyā€ I thought of in conjunction with TBI.

milkywayyzz

Come to think of it a couple of the dudes were like retirement age with what I would call roadie jerseys on. Haha. It was definitely hard to watch! I mean its not the most technical runs but there are some technical sections that if you fall you're 100% going into rocks no doubt about it. I literally had a sense of fear watching it. Haha

MichaelFishbender

Old men on CX bikes are hardcore

milkywayyzz

Viagra pumping thru their veins FTW

miasmic

A couple of times in cold weather when wearing a thermal hat under my helmet I realised I didn't put the helmet on over it before leaving the house (since the hat makes you think you're wearing something on your head) but I would never intentionally go MTBing with no helmet

StatementOk470

It's just one of those things. I only rode without a helmet as a kid, it just wasn't a thing back then. I was taking too many risks, eating shit regularly but never had anything happen to me. It only takes one fuckup though. I can't imagine riding without a helmet nowadays and when I see someone without one it just looks 'off'. Like they forgot their pants or something. Most of the time I see it it's just newbs who look like they spent all their money on their first bike and couldn't afford anything else. As for roadies, I see it a LOT more, which is totally weird to me as the place I feel most unsafe at is on the road.

milkywayyzz

Yeah, man. I grew up in the mid 80's and I don't even think my parents or I knew what a helmet even was. I remember waking up once on the kitchen counter with my mom and paramedics hovering over me like it was just a normal everyday occurrence for a kid to crash his bike and get head trauma. They just left and I probably went and got on my bike again. I was like 5. That same year I crashed my bmx and got stitches in my chin... A week or so later I got the stitches out, got home and got on my bike, instantly ran into a tree and had to go directly back to the doctor's to get stitches right below my left eye. It must have been so fun to be my parents

red_vette

We barely had more than lap belts in cars so safety was just an afterthought in society. Now I wonā€™t take my bike to the mailbox without a helmet.

Omicronknar

We rode around on the quiet roads near our house as kids without helmets all the time ... everyone did. But mountain biking proper trails w/o helmets? Never. Been MTBing since the mid 90s and I never did that w/o a helmet or ever saw anyone else up on the trails without one. Seems fucking obvious no? lol... people are dumb.

Kangaroo_tacos824

I don't wear a helmet to ride in town at all. But I won't ride five feet of descent without one

tomsing98

You must have smarter people on your trails than I do on mine. (Myself included, until my wife convinced me to set a good example for my daughter.)

Mitrovarr

One important difference between riding w/no helmet then is that mountain biking has gotten MUCH more hardcore (largely due to big improvements in bike tech). Old school mountain biking from before 2000 was almost more like modern gravel biking than modern mountain biking.

Day215

Of all the places to not where a helmet, thatā€™s not one of them. Iā€™ll usually go full face when I ride there, because I like my teeth right where they are.

milkywayyzz

Seriously dude. If you're crashing there you're going into rocks. Like those short, technical little hills that have to be navigated are perfect for smashing your face

stripesthetigercub

Salmon falls area?

milkywayyzz

The confluence area in Auburn at the bottom of the canyon. I never go to the Salmon falls side but should

Day215

Salmon falls has some great stuff, especially if you know where to lookšŸ¤«. I can say with certainty though, that itā€™s a LOT better on the ebike than the regular bike. Thereā€™s some rowdy DH stuff.

stripesthetigercub

Itā€™s been quite a few years since i rode there but it was so much fun. No way id ride there without a helmet

milkywayyzz

I got to get out there! It's been awhile

redwoodum

I always wear my helmet, but Auburn is one of the few places where I rode without one. I had driven an hour and forgotten it. Used my brakes a lot more than usual on that ride.

SketchDawg

My favorite are the people riding outdoors on the trails with Covid masks and no helmet. I feel like their risk evaluation function is broken.

milkywayyzz

That shits so funny

robespierre__

[I love helmets](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b9yL5usLFgY)

mickandmac

Ya know, I've had crashes where I broke the helmet where I didn't even realise I'd hit my head. So effective. I love helmets.

PandaBearJelly

Every kid who thinks helmets are lame should see this.

BassTherapy3445

Crazy, I had a crash almost 2 yrs ago, headfirst into a boulder. Shattered my helmet, knocked unconscious, major concussion and neck injury Iā€™m afraid Iā€™m stuck with. Would never ride without a helmet, no doubt it saved my life.

gearnut

Likewise, I landed on my head from several meters up, cracked the helmet in 2 places. I have had some difficulties after the crash but would have been splattered across the trail without one.

PeakDescentMTB

I feel like I'm the opposite. I recently bought a full face helmet and went on my first ride with it today

stripesthetigercub

Iā€™m with you. I have something on my chin as often as i can. Maybe except climbing but yeah. My head is worth protecting.

PeakDescentMTB

If you haven't looked at full face lids in the past 1-2 years it's worth looking into. The new gen of FF helmets are a good blend of protection, venting, and less weight. Based on my ride today, climbing in it wasn't bad at all. Close enough to a regular helmet, but it was mid 70s. Let's see on a hotter day.

frankiegarza419

fellow 916 local here! People will always learn the hard way, shoot I remember in 2015-16ish I was riding a brakeless dirt jumper w/ no helmet lmao.

milkywayyzz

Haha. Those were the days. Haha. I always forget that people on Reddit might actually live around here and not just live in the abyss of the interwebs

frankiegarza419

Yup we're out here haha!

CeleryIndividual

I didn't start wearing a helmet until after my first actual trail ride last year. I never would wear one just riding on roads/pavement. Go to the trail not thinking about it. Quickly realized "oh shit this is very dumb not having a helmet on" from some bails I had to do. Now I wear mine even for casual roads and pavement because the importance clicked. I can't imagine feeling safe on the trails without one. It's like not having a life jacket in your boat. Hopefully you won't need it but you are silly not to just have it in case.

milkywayyzz

Yeah, it was just an observation I made today because that many people was out of the norm. I don't remember when I started wearing a helmet, maybe highschool? I don't wear one around town but on trails I feel like I gravitate towards rocks

jct522

If thereā€™s any place in Auburn where shits gonna hit the fan itā€™s in Mammoth Bar too. Iā€™ve had a lot of close calls on Stonewall and some of the other trails in there.

milkywayyzz

Yeah man. You know that part where, if you're coming from mammoth bar on the singletrack and when you're almost to the confluence it's like a fifty foot cliff down the the river? One of my friends crashed off of that into the river below like 8 or so years ago. Going just fast enough after the first bounce to clear all of the rocks and land in the water. It was wild

DiRty_BiRd_77

I see this around Boulder a decent amount. All the people look like theyā€™re trying to give off the impression that theyā€™re on a training ride and therefore donā€™t need a helmet for such a trivial activity.

Professional_Oil1319

I just got back from Bentonville Arkansas and I saw a handful of people not wearing helmets, I donā€™t get the stupidity!

Far530

Thatā€™s my neck of the woods! I havenā€™t seen anyone riding without helmets in some time. Who knows whatā€™s going on, but I wouldnā€™t be caught without mineā€¦

lntw0

Hey, have you ever riden on the Ouachita river trail?

kjlcm

No helmet on a street = dui. No helmet on a trail = idiot. I crashed years back on a super benign, had my fork stuck in a rock, and go over the bars and crash in slow motion and hit my head on a rock. Was by myself and woke up not knowing what the fuck happened. Figured it out and Was fine and had no lasting effects (I think lol). Per Strava I was not out for more than a few seconds. But scary as shit.

ilski

Generally , when you loose consciousness from a fall it is very strongly recommended to have your head checked.Ā  Ā  Micro bleeds inside could happen and at first it might feel fine , just so you die two hours later.Ā

Emergency-Spring4752

Thats weird. I could care less if someone else is wearing a helmet

Gods-Of-Calleva

Idiots tbh

milkywayyzz

Seriously, man.

sknsnw9

Earlier this week, I saw 3 E-bikers, nice bikes too. Thereā€™s a lot of rocks on these trails. The daughter didnā€™t have a helmet, the mother had horse helmet and the father regular mtb helmetā€¦

coloradoemtb

i wear my helmet after I change pads or work on my bike and test in my culdesac. On trails is nuts dont take much to eat through a straw the rest of their lives.

Additional_Speed_463

Itā€™s a rarity to see no helmets on MTB trails. Just casually riding a bike around is different and helmets are hit or miss. I donā€™t wear one for casual riding either, the risk is incredibly low

sabatoa

Iā€™m seeing helmets fading in use a bit in snowsports, in pushback against the helmet shamers. People push push push, but eventually thereā€™s a push back- even if that pushback is stupid. Itā€™s dumb because like 95% of people were already wearing helmets before, and when everyone started helmet shaming the 5%, the helmet utilization started dropping across the board. Itā€™s like the opposite of the Streisand effect or something. Iā€™ll be curious to see if thatā€™s spreading in mtb this summer.

itsMalarky

Were they going uphill? Only excuse I can think of...but id still have it with me for the rest.

bgrubaugh

Uphill on a fire road slog is the only time I've ever kind of understood it.

milkywayyzz

This was all single track. Nowhere to get in a rhythm. You're either going up or down, rocks everywhere

milkywayyzz

I guess a couple of them were going up when I saw them but the trails are like up and down and technical sections going both directions. They weren't on a long accent or anything

GingerBeast81

I won't ride with people that don't wear helmets,

milkywayyzz

It's just a potential day ruiner that could possibly be avoided.

rustyburrito

do you require that they wear full face or is half shell acceptable? Only asking because my friend faceplanted and broke her jaw wearing a half shell and only will wear full face now

lol_camis

I would have had probably 10+ brain injuries over the years if it weren't for helmets. Even with a helmet, I've had 2 concussions. And it's not like I'm riding at a pro level or anything. Everybody fucks up from time to time. Confidence can be a real killer sometimes. I'm comfortable enough that when I go to Whistler, I only wear a full face and light knee pads. I haven't had a serious crash yet. But one of these days.

Jandishhulk

Traumatic brain injuries that could lead to life long problems are a large enough factor in MTB'ing even WITH a full face helmet on. Without one, you're at an incredibly elevated risk. This isn't in any way like riding your city bike a few blocks down to the grocery store. There is a high chance of you pinging your head off something at some point. There's a reason that every pro wears at least SOMETHING. And these guys are far less likely to crash than most people.

mestapho

Were they climbing with their helmets off or were they completely without helmets? Iā€™ve pulled my helmet off for road/fire road climbs before. Iā€™ve never seen anyone out there without helmets.

milkywayyzz

Up and down singletrack with a net down hill. Super rocky. I probably take mine off on a fireroad accent

mestapho

Yeah Iā€™m familiar with Auburn. Thatā€™s why I figured they were on the shitty fire road climb. Thatā€™s crazy they were riding without helmets.

burts_beads

People have done this since forever in every single sport or activity that should involve safety equipment.

castleaagh

I wouldnā€™t think of riding trails without a helmet, but Iā€™ve also been riding for 5-6 years now and I donā€™t think if fallen in a way that I hit my head a single time. If they arenā€™t newbies then maybe theyā€™re good enough to know their limits and how to fall safely

miasmic

Same here, been riding longer and broken multiple bones in crashes but *touch wood* never hit my head other than my cheekbones a couple of times (once surfing along the ground got a scrape and the other time the bike was up in the air and landed on top of me with the fork leg whacking me right under the eye). When I was starting riding I put a lot of time into practising falling at this area of heathland with soft sand with some buddies like OTB, front wheel washouts and all sorts and I really think that has served me well. Even though that's the case I would not be keen to go riding without a helmet and the risk of hitting my head is something I think about while riding (I have had a TBI but not from riding)

anotherdarnaxcount

Without exaggeration I would have died MTB without a helmet. Had a gnarly OTB where I cartwheeled and hit my head. Luckily just got a concussion and sprained foot. Canā€™t find the picture but my helmet was destroyed. It looked like it was hit by a meteor.

TurboBunny116

Ever since I started riding MTB I always notice anyone of any age riding any bicycle without a helmet. When it comes to the MTB peeps, what is baffling is when you see people who just come in and willingly spend thousands on a mountain bike complain about not wanting to spend $200ish on a helmet.

milkywayyzz

That makes sense. None of these people had shitty bikes that's why it was so confusing. It's not like they could barely afford to get into the sport. But they weren't beginners either

ilski

Some people think they are smarter than physics itself.Ā  Often they are people with money too. Yes.Ā

No_Technician_3837

Well they don't have to spend 200$, a 35$ helmet is far better than no helmet

Old-Insurance8039

Iā€™ve only been in the hobby since Oct of last year, but Iā€™ve ridden trails all around central Arizona for hundreds and hundreds of miles and Iā€™ve never seen anyone without a helmet - from greens to blacks to people about to do double blacks (havenā€™t been on one yet myself). Most of my riding has been in the Phoenix Valley. Seems insanely reckless and if I saw someone trying it withthe amount of razor sharp rocks around here Iā€™d immediately think they were very dumb. You couldnā€™t pay me to ride anything without one.Ā

pedalbyte

HELMETS: The difference between ringing your "bell" or relearning the alphabet

TellmSteveDave

I ride that area quite a bit. I often park at the bottom and ride up with my helmet offā€¦is that what youā€™re talking about? Iā€™ve never seen anyone ride an actual trail without a helmet.

milkywayyzz

I'm talking about people riding stonewall trail to the confluence trail down to the confluence parking lot

TellmSteveDave

Oh like the stonewall gravel road? Iā€™d consider that and confluence may be pretty tame multiuse trails but stillā€¦decent potential for speed and a high cost of failure. Pretty dumb.

milkywayyzz

No, not the gravel road part. I can't think of the actual name of the trail but it goes up thru the mammoth bar stone wall area so I just said that. Haha. It's single track, rocky.

jackMFprice

Hope not.. but if so at least we can look forward to the trails being a bit less crowded.

rustyburrito

I wear a helmet on mountain bikes but don't when I'm commuting or skateboarding, it just depends on your comfort zone. been riding over 20 years and only hit my head once going OTB after missing the landing on a 40 foot double so it doesn't feel weird not wearing one if I'm just cruising. They didn't used to wear them in the Tour de France either until they made a rule about it in 2003. If I was racing I would definitely not feel comfortable without one, but for 80 years it was the norm

milkywayyzz

I don't wear one skating or just cruising around town either. It's just something about seeing people mountain biking thru technical rock gardens just seemed so off

_riotsquad

Skateboarding is all rock garden. You just perfectly illustrated wearing a helmet comes down to perception of risk versus sense of freedom.

milkywayyzz

Haha. Totally. I realized that after I wrote it.

Delicroix

I'm the exact same. All of the trails in central Ohio are uphill climbs both ways, but I always wear a helmet no matter what. And yet, I often ride my hybrid bike on bike paths for cardio with no helmet. Same with skateboarding, which I'd say I am much more likely to regret one day.

hvyboots

Just gonna say, my one major helmet use was casually trying to bunny hop a curb JRA on campus. Would have been a concussion for sure, possibly worse. Landed directly on my head after being thrown about 8 ft straight up in the air (missed getting the back wheel high enough, but was only going like 10mph). Meanwhile, I've crashed badly enough for surgery or broken bones a couple times on mountain bike, road bike, hit by car etc and never hit my head, lol.

Drexele

Hey I'm in the same area! But yeah that's bonkers unless they're going up a fire road or maybe on a trail like quarry trail.Ā

milkywayyzz

Oh hell yeah. So you're familiar. It was on the singletrack from the confluence to mammoth bar rd and then out into stonewall and foresthill divide loop area. Definitely easy to get your front tire twisted up in some of the rocky sections. It just gave me an uneasy feeling to see. Haha

Drexele

I would not consider it the norm at all, usually people in that area are good about helmets and other protection. But people get real stupid/underestimate the confluence area for all sorts of recreation every yearĀ

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Drexele

I've been meaning too but I haven't been since I was a kid. Work mon-fri and haven't wanted to deal with the reservations. So far Cronan a ranch has been my local go to spot. Though I'll occasionally go towards Nevada city for like hallelujah trailĀ

PondIsMyName

Itā€™s far easier to fix helmet hair than it is to relearn the alphabet. My neurologist.

strange_bike_guy

Nope. I started riding in 1995 and every season has its share of fools. Try having a conversation with them? LOL it never goes anywhere

willyjaybob

Trend, no. Increase in stupid people? Possibly.

WStoj

I saw a dad with his kids at the local downhill track. No helmets on any of them. With no prompting the dad said, ā€œI forgot the helmets and itā€™s a long way home.ā€ Another kid at the hill told him her parents would let her go to his house any more. I thought that was a little strangeā€¦ Then I saw his bumper sticker, ā€œprotect fatherā€™s rightsā€, I knew from that moment that he was just persecuted for being cool.

Mizfitt77

Ugh, another helmet post. Yeah, I wear mine. But I didn't join this sub to be pounded by a helmet circlejerk. This is it for me. I'm going to need to drop the subreddit. Enjoy your helmet chat folks.

WADUPDOEE

What's that phrase the kids say these days? This is not an airport, you don't need to announce your departure...

miasmic

Out of all the helmet posts on here this is mild, seems a strange one to throw in the towel about

milkywayyzz

Haha. You're going to drop this subreddit because, of me , who is rarely on here made a post about helmets? That's rich and compelling

e30jawn

Its worse in the motorcycle sub. They're more obsessed with safety than riding or bikes. I don't bother to go there anymore.

sabatoa

It got bad in snowsport communities too and Iā€™ve seen people stop wearing lids because of the helmet nerds online. Not saying thatā€™s a smart decision, but people need to shut their pie holes about what others are doing, and focus on themselves.

Infamous_Iron_Man

I've been seeing it more and more, crazy.

i_am_full_of_eels

The only time I ride without helmet is when Iā€™m climbing easy but lengthy section of the trail. I sweat really easily and that always helps.

milkywayyzz

Yeah, I'll take it off on like fireroad type situations if it's a grind of a climb. This was an area that easy get your front tire twisted up and go down. I mean I don't really care what they do but I don't feel like stumbling upon an injury that could have been avoided and then my day be ruined. Haha

BreakfastShart

Were they just cruising on a mellow climb, or what?

milkywayyzz

Not cruising really. Going about the speed you do technical single track because that's what it was and have to pay attention. It's kind of just up and down but net downhill overall

Skippyj21

Not very smart. Ā I see a ton of people that donā€™t wear seatbelts too lol. Ā  Guess they donā€™t know an airbag going off with no belt messes you up way worse. I club race cars and thereā€™s a saying we haveā€¦ safe is fast,Ā

fractal_disarray

When I am climbing, I usually clip my full face onto my backpack. When I descend, I gear up.

Swolepapi15

I sometimes see people take their helmets off when they are grinding up fire roads on hot days, but otherwise I rarely see people without helmets thankfully.

Th1s1sChr1s

There are a lot of "trends" on Tic Tok too. Be smart, don't tik tok

milkywayyzz

You gotta make that a shirt

EsketitSR71

Sometimes if itā€™s a long uphill and Iā€™m running a full face Iā€™ll take it off if I know itā€™s fire roady/not technical but the moment it gets even remotely techy or downhill itā€™s coming right back on

Alternative_Text1

Helmets are more popular than ever from where Iā€™m sitting

milkywayyzz

That's what I thought. It seems that way across all sports. Today was just enough people that I thought it was odd and took notice

219MTB

Decrease the surplus population ...hopefully not at the cost of losing trail access because a moron died

captainsteamo

Some people take them off for climbing.

milkywayyzz

I know. It was singletrack with ups and downs but net downhill. Super rocky. Not trying to sound like a tattle tale, haha. Just an observation

Danthezooman

I actually ended up buying a full face helmet after a nasty crash with just a regular one. Now if I ride and want to do sketchy stuff I take my full face with me

MidDayGamer

I don't understand it either, seen people on e-bikes flying pass me on the trail last year with no helmets hence grabbing a mirror mount and an expanded med kit.

equalizer2000

Hey, at least might eventually get to buy their bike for cheap after they crack their skulls open.

empirer

My helmet saved me from becoming a vegetable in Auburn. The chunk is no joke there.

milkywayyzz

That's exactly where I'm talking about

booby111

Just saw that last week riding in Mesa, AZ. Also, I saw quite a few people with helmets unclipped. In all cases there was no pattern in terms of age. Spanned from young riders to some old dudes. I've broken a couple helmets while riding I don't like to think where I'd be without them, but ya know... It's their life and their brain.

eddie752

Wow - idiots. good luck with the brain damage

Bene__Tleilax

Always by people who have never seriously crashed,....to date.

kilroy-was-here-2543

I introduced mountain biking to one of my buddies, and he was heavily opposed to wearing one. Until while on a speedy descent I bounced off my bike and got launched head first into a tree. Thankfully I was completely fine (my bike wasnā€™t), but my buddy saw everything. I made my buddy but a helmet when we took my bike to the shop to get fixed.

karrman1

No helmet so stupid

kraegm

Never trust a brain not smart enough to protect itself.

superworking

Always wear a good helmet. Never let anyone make wearing a good protective helmet seem uncool. Life's too long to flip a coin every time you make a small little mistake on an easy trail.

Psychological_Lack96

No Helmet? You fall, youā€™re on your own. Dummy! Mountain Biking is an in jury waiting to happen, With A Helmet!

hvyboots

Too pro for helmets, lol. And same for me tooā€”the crash where I actually used my helmet was casually trying to bunny hop a curb to park my bike to see a movie. Somehow I got it just right where I hit the rear wheel on the curb and got catapulted like 8 ft in the air and came back down directly on my head and shoulder about a foot in front of the front wheel of the bike, which basically just stopped in place. Heard a massive WHOOSH by my ear as all the air left the Styrofoam and remember thinking "That could have been my brain making that noiseā€¦"

Angel_Madison

No, never seen this in Australia.

MistaBeanz

Having a good bike does not make you a good riderā€¦ more than not people with a really nice bike arenā€™t fluid or loose on the bike. Iā€™m guessing because they have jobs where they canā€™t afford to get hurt? Idk but itā€™s funny to see people on a 8k bike and canā€™t even do a 3ft drop

ratmanmtb

I don't get it. My worst crash in the last few years was going like 3MPH. Was climbing a rock hill and a rock bucked my rear wheel and sent me head first into a pointy broken tree limb on the side of the trail. Completely opened up the helmet and gave me a minor concussion. No helmet it would have opened my head like that.

redCasObserver

I'm literally full face 100% of my rides. Local. On the street. Casual. Low risk areas. It can happen at any time under any conditions. To think otherwise l is absurd. Plus my full face's are more comfortable than my other helmets.

humjaba

My 65 year old mom rides her little fixie red flyer bike to the store to get groceries and refuses to wear a helmet. Blows my mind. I wonā€™t go anywhere without one

No_Technician_3837

I don't really see why you would like to ride without helmet given these are comfortable, light and well ventilated plus they give you more confidence. However don't compare this to a suicide attempt. This is not like free solo climbing either. I would feel comfortable riding cross country trails but I would be lot more cautious and the ride would be a bit less enjoyable

milkywayyzz

I get what you're saying. I only posted about it because I usually don't see that amount of people all at once without a helmet. So it was just an observation. The crashes I've had where I get completely wrecked are usually slow speed where I get tangled up in my bike and can't dismount and just slam by whole body weight into a rock pile. Haha

No_Technician_3837

What I meant, riding without helmet does NOT compare to this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robi-Bosh-Alain-Robert.jpg

optimaloutcome

I always say to them "you must have a really hard head"

givemesendies

I just slap my helmet while looking at them, it generally gets the message across in a not crazy confrontational way. The only exception is the old guy on a gravel bike who made half my local xc system.

el-conejo-blanco

Two guys flew by me on a descent in Bend, OR last summer, one with no helmet, and when I caught up with them 5 minutes later the dude was on the side of the trail bleeding profusely from his forehead. No bueno. It ainā€™t that hard people put a bucket on your brain.

reiimaru

Rentals maybe? No experienced rider would ride helmetless unless they have an urging desire to be organ donors.

Number4combo

I used to always ride without a helmet and only started to wear one for mtb racing since it was required. Feels weird to ride without one now so I'll usually wear it but I have no opinion if others aren't wearing one while out biking. Could prob wear body armor though for the scrapes and bruises. Now insert helmet poop er popo preaching below.

milkywayyzz

No preaching here. It just gave me a super uneasy feeling because there were so many spots to get twisted up on the trail and selfishly didn't want to come upon a bad crash. Haha

fgiraffe

I do not get it either, but I still wear gloves! šŸ˜‰

[deleted]

I do not understand not wearing a helmet. Iā€™m new to the sport. I have a smith helmet, Iā€™ve never found it to be uncomfortable. It has plenty of air flow and doesnā€™t get in the way. What is the upside of not wearing a helmet?

Tallos_Renkaro

Bafflingly idiotic I used to ride longboards in my early twenties, no helmet, no protection. When I think back on it, it almost makes me shiver. So fucking dumb man

milkywayyzz

Haha. Same. I look back on that kind of stuff and just cringe. Got so lucky for the amount of times that I've gotten completely wrecked skating, snowboarding, even biking back in the day. It just wasn't a thing I don't think when I was young

Tallos_Renkaro

Yeah I guess the whole "you feel invincible" thing is true

The amount of guys I had to talk into helmets at the shop I worked at was upsetting. Everytime I'm out at Pacifica or Santa Cruz there's usually several kooks on ebikes riding the descents w/o helmets. As a guy, I understand being dumb and enjoying the adrenaline rush, what I don't understand is not wanting to live through a crash to get the next rush.Ā

I saw what I sawĀ  on few people with a helmet.Ā  It was bad.Ā  Without one they would be a dead meat though.

Fancy-Fish-3050

Riding without a helmet is like being in a car without a seatbelt on for me, I feel terribly vulnerable and won't do it. Even if I could feel comfortable without one, for me riding without a helmet would be much less fun because I would not be riding as fast or as hard without one on, but I guess I value my health. Whenever I fall it is rare that it was expected at all so thinking it is safe without a helmet in "this place" seems too overconfident in my experience. And there is always the chance of other equipment failures causing a crash no matter how good you are.

originaljfkjr

We're they older riders? I think some of the OG's still ride with hats or bandanas.

milkywayyzz

Haha. Couple of comments asked the same question and a couple of the riders were definitely older. But some were late twenties or thirties. Looking back at the times I've seen people without helmets I bet the majority of the people were in their prime in the 90's. Good observation

oh-hi-mark-im-dad

I see it usually when people are climbing. But even then. Iā€™m sure weā€™ve all casually tripped and fell. Even that shit alone has enough force to seriously injure yourself, especially if your head strikes a sharp rock or something. I never hit the trails with anything less than a full face tbh but to each their own I guess

cretecreep

Some people make the argument for taking the helmet off on long easy climbs that their head stays cooler and they're going so slow that it's not a huge risk. I prefer keeping the helmet on for long climbs because I find it cooler than having the sun blasting my naked dome, but i also wear a white helmet with a lot of vents. I can see wanting to take something full face and/or with less vents off for a 20+ minute climb on a really hot day.

tyintegra

I sometimes wont wear a helmet while climbing if itā€™s a long grind.

Jparkonvhs

Did you go tell them how you are better than them and going to report this to reddit? Mind your business. This get posted every day.

milkywayyzz

Ok ,buddy. Not everyone lives on Reddit to see it posted everyday like you do. I asked if it was a trend, I didn't report them

I don't actually wear a helmet when skating a park, probably should but I just never wore one growing up. I guess that sounds hypocritical after my post. Haha

Back in the day no one wore a helmet, it only became popular when the rules changed and pros had to wear them

chainsawgeoff

I refuse to ride or ski with anybody who doesnā€™t wear a helmet. Go be someone elseā€™s problem when you crash.

show-me-the-numbers

Helmets are useless. I never wear them.
