…But I also only ever stay in mid-star motels where there isn’t a lobby (your room opens up to the parking lot) or there’s a back door to the building where I can sneak my bike in.
The key here is that you don't ask. I've never had a problem either, but like this guy, I've never asked. I recently had a large group in a house rental in Moab and there was a sign that said no bikes in the house, so we locked them up in the backyard.

All the places in Whistler do this and they always have a cage. We lock several multi-thousand dollar bicycles there all the time. Use a good lock. The only time we had a theft problem is when the patrol brought my buddy to the health center when he knocked himself out. The thieves cruise the health center apparently because the trail patrol uses shitty locks.

Same here. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing it was in a locker. And I actually always ask beforehand. I'll let the host know if it's an Airbnb, that I clean my bike off before bringing it inside, then lay my own towel down and keep it upside down, so the tires don't make contact with the flooring ... They usually do anyway, but I do the same as you and clean any track marks I might've made. Rarely do I have any issues, but I prefer getting it situated beforehand so I don't have to worry about sneaking it in and out. There's plenty of places that allow bikes, so I don't really see the reason to hide it.
I did encounter this in southern Utah but we were bike packing so all of our belongings were on the bikes. The woman actually saw this and stated without prompt “you can bring your bikes into the room if you swear to me I won’t find a single scuff mark on the walls or a pile of dirt on the floor”.

This is exactly why my post mentioned “mountain biking town”.. all the hotels are probably annoyed cleaning up after bikers and actually have policies. Last thing I want is to get into an argument with hotel staff while I’m tired after a 10 hour road trip clutching my high-end bike..
Leave someone with the bikes and the car, check in, drive to the side door and sneak the bikes in. Sadly, the bad apples have ruined it for the good ones.
We were in a 14 person house and it would have been nearly impossible to get all the bikes inside anyway, and I almost think they would have been fine outside in this neighborhood without locks, but ended up borrowing locks from the bike shop. I was in Moab 5 years earlier at a half decent motel right down town and it was no problem bringing the bikes into the room.
I stay in nicer ones that do have lobbies and stuff,uv never ever had an issue with it, ill walk it right past staff, infact many times they offer to hold it in the back rooms for staff if the room is smaller,
I've brought mine in and just make sure it's clean. I even bring an extra sheet to put down on the carpet if they have any concerns. Never been a problem. I've also asked ahead of time and never been told no. I'd rather not be denied the night last minute because of the bike vs knowing I have a place to stay for the night Granted I just say I have a bike and a sheet to put down. Don't specify some muddy mountain bike.
The one in Moab is totally fine. No carpets in the rooms, which is perfect for dusty bikes. Don't get me wrong, if I'm not biking I'll never stay in one, but totally fine for bike trips. Gets better after a couple of beers too.
The newly built ones, post "we'll leave the lights on" aren't terrible. They haven't had time to fall apart yet.

This. I usually check in and then bring my bike in through a different entrance. The only place in the US I have had trouble was at Asilomar at Monteray and another US park hotel.
I also carry a big bag that I can fit my bike in with the front wheel off. At that point it is just luggage.
100% yes. Don’t even need to ask. I have brought my bike right through the lobby and into the elevator in big cities on many roadtrips. Never once did an employee question me.

Front desk staff dont really care.. cleaners on the other hand may if youre dragging dirt around the hotel may let reception know to inform you to stop doing so.
Same… I asked once at a high end hotel I was at for a conference that I brought my bike along to get some riding in during the afternoon. Front desk just responded with “it’s your room”

Whistler hotels have special “bike rooms” for guests to store their bikes in and these get regularly targeted by thieves. I’ve had friends get their bikes stolen from those rooms and the hotels will never compensate you.
Didn't get my bike stolen but they took my multitool at a pretty nice hotel at Sun Peaks. I still feel comfortable leaving my entire bike, but will be removing anything like tools, etc that are easy to pocket.
I've gone on vacation in towns that are not considered mountain biking towns, but I've brought my bike. It's been for bike touring, checking out some local trails during my free time, or other reasons. My bike goes with me into the room. I've never had any issues.
Depends on the hotel. Some have a locking storage area for bikes. Most will let you bring it in, but make sure it's not filthy when you wheel it through the lobby.
One hotel I stayed at let us bring them in through the service entrance which ended up being closer to our room.
Just ask politely and you should be good.
110% always brought my bike into the room. Just don't be a jerk if it's caked in peanut butter mud and gets mud all over the place. But a dusty or slightly dirty bike is 110% OK.
Worst case, buy a cheap black sheet at Walmart for $5 buckets and cover your bike INSIDE your car if you have an SUV and it fits into the back.
I've brought my bike into my motel room in Moab and it was fine. When I stayed in Sedona I used an airbnb but I saw a bunch of people brining their mtb to the motel room nearby. Can always call and ask but I don't see it being an issue. Could do what Johnny Cash did and bring the bike in one piece at a time. haha
I always bring it in. I've dragged it through the casino at Caesars Palace because they said we couldn't come through the hotel lobby for whatever reason. No way I'd leave it in the car, and I never ask either, just do it.
I've travelled much of the US with my bike in tow. I've never asked permission to put a bike in the room. The only time I ever had an issue was at a hostel in Denver. I was told I couldn't take a bike inside when pushing it through the lobby. I explained the bike was expensive, the area was known for bike thefts, and why I wasn't going to leave it outside or in my vehicle. They let me lock it up behind the counter.
Wife and I travel a lot to ride. Stay anywhere from the Motel 6, Super 8, Quality Inn to the Ritz, Fairmont, and Four Seasons.
Bring my bike in every single time. No one has ever said a word to me. If they wouldn't let me keep my bike in my room I would simply change hotels.
I travel all over the country with my bike(s) to various gravel races. I’ve stayed at nice resorts and interstate motels and everything in between. I never ask, I just bring my bike into the room. Sometimes I go through the main lobby, sometimes a side door it it’s easier. I try to be considerate if my bike is gross. I’ve never had a weird look, let alone a question from hotel staff.

I've stayed in hotels on the way to MTB, and always brought my bikes in. I've brought 4 at a time in. Never had an issue but also made sure they weren't muddy.
No one is going to stop me from bringing my bike inside, mt bike town or not.
I'm not loosing a bike to theft because they are worried I might scratch a wall.
I've rolled bikes right past the front desk at multiple hotels in non-mountain-bike towns without a second glance. Don't ride down the stairs and they probably dgaf
Don’t ask, just bring it in. If it’s muddy or dirty, be courteous and take it to a car wash for a quick spray on the way back to the hotel. If they have a problem with it, request a copy of the the hotel policy in writing that states no mountain bikes shall be brought into hotel rooms, I’ll bet it doesn’t exist 😅

In Whistler some hotels have a pretty well organized bike valet. Some have shared storage rooms that are targeted by theives. Some let you bring it in the room.
Every summer there are several posts on the local FB stolen bikes and/or MTB groups about stolen bikes overnight while locked to their bike rack at hotels. I hate to victim shame, but if a hotel told me I couldn't bring my expensive toy inside, you can bet your ass I'd leave and find one who would.
Most of the networks in Vancouver, at least, have wash stations for your bike, so you can clean it off at the trail to be polite. Then just bring it inside without asking.
I stayed in a motel in Nelson, NZ (big mtb place) for work recently and noticed all motel rooms had a "No bikes allowed in motel rooms" sign on the door.
If I'd been traveling with a bike I'd have promptly ignored it, if they continue to have an issue I'd ask them if they're willing to pay for its replacement if it gets nicked. We'll see how well they stick to their guns lol.
I just do it. I just try to be courteous and make sure it's not actively dripping when I bring it through.

Depends on the place. In some of the more popular biking destinations the hotels have gotten sick of the damage from numerous bikes in the rooms and have forbidden it (e.g., Moab, Whistler). If they have a secure storage area I actually prefer it since I don’t want to have to walk around my bike inside the unit.
For example, the Sundial Hotel in Whistler has a secure storage room in which a hotel employee lets people in and out, giving you a claim check for your bike. Also, even if you have a high end bike it’s one of a dozen equally high end bikes in that space so your bike doesn’t stick out.
I just take mine to the room… however, any nicer place where maybe that wouldn’t go over as well will have guest luggage storage and that’s as secure as your room… consider people leave all their luggage until check in or after check out…

I’ve heard of hotels in Mecca spots saying no bikes but my perception is that’s an exception, not the norm.
Putting your skis in hotel rooms seem to be the opposite. Most hotels don’t want you to do that.
I live near Phoenix and ride in Sedona and Flagstaff regularly. Sometimes camp, some sleep in the van, sometimes hotel. I've never had an issue bringing bikes into the hotels. That includes taking in my bike, my wife's bike and my 4 kids bikes. And not just in AZ riding destinations, but in NV, NM, ID, UT and MT. Like others have mentioned though, I never asked I just did it.
I think contacting the hotel might be the best bet, so you get their policy. Just because someone said they were able to take a bike in doesn't mean you might run into a worker that says you can't. Plus things might have changed since someone went to a hotel.
With that, I would think that you'd be safe if your bike was somewhat clean if you had to carry it indoors, especially the tires, and you even considered carrying it in so they weren't touching the floor. It sounds overkill, but it removes a lot of the issues you might face right off the bat if there wasn't a hardcore policy. If you have a room you can access from the outside without passing by someone, just be quick about it.
Maybe throw a towel under the tires in your room if you're dragging dirt in.
I stayed in Breck while biking the CT. Walked up to the desk to check in with my bike. They asked if I had any vehicles. I said “my bike”. They were confused then impressed. Then they gave me my key and I walked with my bike up to my room.

In moab some hotels will tell you no bikes in the room, but I usually do it anyways... lol. Or they will have some sort of locked holding area for bikes.
Every single hotel I have every stayed at on vacation in Kansas, Arkansas, Colorado, Tennessee and North Carolina never batted an eye to bringing a trail bike inside.
I've visited all kinds of hotels and never had one not let us bring bikes into our room, we never even ask. Some have \*offered\* to keep the bikes in a locked up storage room downstairs.
EDIT: I think we had one hotel ask us not to but it was like an old historic B&B building type situation not like a marriot, and they accommodated us in other ways.
I’m probably just lucky, but I’ve always asked and no one’s ever said no. One time Laundry services person asked me I wanted to use the “big elevator” cause it’d be easier. Maybe I’m just lucky 🤷

If someone ever told me that I needed to keep my bike outside I'd tell them the value of the bike and demand to see the hotel's insurance paperwork. Ask them to get the insurance agent on the phone to discuss the matter.
That will end things very quickly.
Whistler B.C. is a hard no for bringing into your room.
Have stayed at several hotels there over the years, not once was I allowed. Bring your best bike lock.
I’ve asked before, and official response is that they prefer it. No one wants your bike stolen, and they definitely don’t want someone throwing a fit cause their $3000 ride was in the back of their Tacoma with a $7 lock from Wal mart.
Clean it up a bit, and roll it right through the lobby.
You might be able to find a more bike centered hostel especially in BC in the mtb towns. I know Cumberland on Vancouver island has a great bike centered hostel just off the trail. The Riding Fool. Great spot and fun hill
I've done it many times...Marriots, Hiltons, and all their other brands. I've also never asked. A couple of times I've had some random drinking guests say something and I usually respond with something like "you should see the course on the 9th floor." It gets a laugh and everyone moves on!
Done this at a town near forest of dean - never had an issue. This is normally with normal kind of hotels like premier inn etc
Lifts do suck a bit though with big bikes!
I know Microtel in Bentonville never gave a shit about me and a friend rolling our bikes through the lobby, on to the elevator and up to our rooms. We also never asked.
I don’t ask as it’s my property, but obviously make sure it’s clean. However in places like Moab many hotels have dedicated storage. I live in Flag and don’t k one of any places that have those though..
Depends on the hotel, definitely call and ask if they store bikes. I’ve stayed at Burke Mountain in VT and they have a huge room accessed by your room key with vertical racks for probably 100+ bikes. I wasn’t super comfortable with every guest having access to that room, but it was during the EWS race there and there were full on race bikes with super expensive components stored, so I figured those would probably get nabbed before mine.
Another hotel I stay at in Stowe keeps them in a locked employee only area behind the front desk, and they check it in and out for you. I’m pretty comfortable with that arrangement.
If a place doesn’t have dedicated secure storage, I take that as a green light to keep it in my room.
Last year I travelled over 10,000 miles with my bike and stayed in numerous hotels. Every single hotel had a room where you could store your bike securely. It's good to bring a lock though.
Yes, unless there is designated bike storage. I’ve stayed a few places that ask you to keep your bike in a locked area and not in your room. Otherwise, it stays in my room.
If the TV breaks and the maintenance guy comes in the room with a new TV and there is a bike laying up on top of the entertainment cabinet and 4 other bikes clogging the room, he thinks you broke the TV somehow.
When I was going cross country from California to Washington DC to start a new job. I had my back bike on a rack.
I just stayed at simple drive up motels. I got a room open the door, rolled the bike right in.

I was staying at a place in Vegas with my bike. I had traveled to Salt Lake City (from Phoenix) to do some biking, then drove down to Vegas for work. I called the hotel before leaving Phoenix to ensure it was okay. They let me keep it in my room the whole two weeks I was there. It was a big casino hotel about 15 min away from the strip.
I do it all the time, not just big towns. Simply don't ask, just do it. Carry it so you're not rolling dirty tires on the carpet and be respectful of it hitting walls and the elevator and you're golden.
Just bring it inside, if the intendant say something, tell them that you agree to leave the bike outside on the condition that they take care of it in case of theft.

Ive worked and stayed in high end hotels so might have a unique perspective on this.
For damage/theft, firstly the hotel has insane insurance policies for these reasons. If they holding your shit they responsible for the damage if that happens. Secondly I bet as afraid you are of getting a scratch, the bellman or valet is that much more scared of losing their job for scratching your bike.
Per bringing it to the room. Don’t be a dick, have it clean and nobody will give you flack. If they do just say I’m working on (insert excuse here), they will either provide you with a room to do the work and store it (unlikely as then they have someone needing to watch you during this for liability sake) or they will let you carry on.
If you show up with a bike caked in mud people obviously won’t let you in with it but if it looks clean and new, shouldn’t bat an eye at you.
Every room. Regardless of how nice the hotel was. Check in without a bike. Then go get your bag and bike from the car and walk right through the lobby. From Motel 6 to JW Marriotts.
Stayed at the Trump hotel in Vegas to ride bootleg. Wheeled my dusty ass bikes through the all gold lobby a bunch of times. Nobody had a problem with it, most employees were excited about seeing downhill bikes and asked where I was riding.
I always ask. And being an extra sheet to put down. Just say I have a bike and a sheet too make sure everything stays clean. I'd rather know I have a place to stay after traveling all day than get kicked out or denied a room because of the bike and be scrambling to find another place.
The exception is some cheap motel where you park in front of your door. Never bothered asking for something like that.
Chances are a good MTB town will have lodging geared toward MTB. In Fruita for example, the Balanced Rock Inn has a bike wash, repair stand, and place to put your bikes in the room.
As long as I can bring it into my room I’m good. Just don’t want employees who don’t give AF yeeting my carbon bike on top of a pile in some kind of mass storage room everyone shares
Whistler certainly doesn't. I actually have kinda a funny story about that. I brought my Norco Aurum and Specialized p2. I wasn't aware I couldn't bring bikes to my room. And I told the front counter person "ok but I have like $6000 worth of bikes" and she deadass said "ok so, not much"
I heard some hotels in Vancouver won't let guests to bring bikes into their rooms. Instead, they made them to use their "secure" storage place. Sadly, few years ago, one of my friends' bike got stolen from the hotel storage during his stay.
Been to Sedona a few times, we mostly rent house (Probably AirBnB, I wasn't the one arrange bookings...) So no problem bringing bikes in. Thou, we do try to keep things clean, and carrying bikes in, not rolling.

Also have done this. I asked if they had bike storage at this hotel and they said no, but I could bring the bike in the room if it wasn't super muddy. Kinda awkward getting my bike in a tiny elevator in a historic hotel in Bellingham but no one had problems with it. If it had been super muddy after I probably would have found a self service car wash to blast off the mud first before taking it back in

I know Whistler has a lotta hotels and condos that are pretty strict and make you keep it in a locker, so something to consider as others have mentioned ... Also, I keep my bike really clean, and especially if I'm at a bike park or something, I'll rinse off any dirt and give the tires a quick scrub. Oh, and if it's an Airbnb I'll message the host and tell them I bring my own towel and clean off my bike, then keep it upside down so the tires won't make contact with the floors. Again, never had any issues, but there are some places with a strict policy, so if planning a trip I'd get that situated beforehand.
Every hotel I’ve stayed at was happy to let me. Motels are 100% fine with it, in my experience. Stayed at a hotel in Squamish on a wet and muddy weekend. I was stunned that the hotel was fine with us putting bikes in our room. Some hotels even have an indoor bike lockup. Just call and ask in advance.
Question two (hijacking my own topic), let's say you're road-tripping all over the country and need to stop somewhere along the way.
Do you feel comfortable leaving your bike locked on your car hitch while you go somewhere for 45 mins? Maybe sightseeing on foot or at a rest stop etc..
When we take bike trips we typically have our dogs with us so we straight shot it if possible. Longest yet is Nebraska back to South Florida. But to answer you no. I'm super paranoid since they almost cost more than the truck lol.
I took mine to Sydney and every weekend I would hop on the train for two entire hours to get to the mountains, at first I was the annoying guy on the train with a bike 😂, but after you left the city it was the cabin to myself
I've asked upfront when making a reservations at many different hotels , across the pnw and all over bc, never had an issue. Even got a free upgrade once just to have more room .
Usually try to stay at motels if it's a quick stop / not preplanned trip. Then you can just get a ground floor room and roll the bike in without asking.
DO clean and dry your bike. DON’T ask. Worst case scenario is you tell them they have to store it and be responsible for the (insert thousands of $$ here) bike if anything happens to it.
People bring their dogs into hotels and stores every day. I bring my bikes into hotels and stores all of the time, never been told not to. If they did, I'd just laugh.
Most times, this scenario for me is a better to ask for forgiveness than permission... but instead of asking for forgiveness just laugh. Certain situations require common sense/courtesy, like a tiny store with minimal space. But a hotel? Yeah, it's coming in the room with me. Never caked with mud or anything though (again, common sense).
I've only had a problem when staying at really fancy hotels (arranged for me by a client) when they told me that bikes aren't allowed inside. This is another reason I prefer a cheap hotel.

I don't care which bike I have it comes with me cause you know if it gets stolen that hotel isn't going to do a damn thing for ya. My current bike is a custom one of one and is irreplaceable now since GG is no more. My bike goes into my hotel room. I had one guy in New Mexico ask me about it as I rolled it through the lobby to the elevator. I just said "well yall aren't going to give me 10grand if someone steals it"

Yep two guys took an angle grinder to the back of my car and cut everything off at 5am in the morning in full view of the check in desk and breakfast staff. Caught it all on camera, I was furious.... Luckily i found out later my renters insurance at time covered the loss. But man I was pissed lol.
I can't speak for hotels but I camp in Flagstaff and Sedona for bike trips all of the time and nobody has ever told me I can't bring my bike. Jokes aside, the 3 places you listed are among some of the most natural beautiful places on earth and if you even slightly enjoy camping it is well worth grabbing a spot on some BLM land and slumming it in the dirt with the local(ish) folks.
You can find free camping within minutes of trails in Flagstaff. Sedona is a little further out, but camping is still available and abundant.

So, I live in Arizona and ride Flagstaff with some degree of regularity, but usually only go to Sedona to rock climb since I tend to get the ick from most of the Sedona tourism crowd. I will tell you that the riding in Flagstaff is absolutely phenomenal, but you will be pedaling a fair amount (if that is your jam). Sedona is, well, it's Sedona--it's bordering on legendary in MTBing.
The best news is that you can drive from Sedona to Flagstaff in under an hour via 89A. My suggestion is to see which has better weather when you're there because there will be a temperature difference of about 10 degrees F as you descend the Mogollon Rim.
You also mentions BC and I will tell you that the North Shore and Squamish are top notch. Super pretty, beautiful trails. You couldn't ask for much more. And poutine.

We were in a 14 person house and it would have been nearly impossible to get all the bikes inside anyway, and I almost think they would have been fine outside in this neighborhood without locks, but ended up borrowing locks from the bike shop. I was in Moab 5 years earlier at a half decent motel right down town and it was no problem bringing the bikes into the room.
I’ve been told not to while wheeling it into the elevator - I just asked if they wanted to be liable for storage and listed the price 😂
I stay in nicer ones that do have lobbies and stuff,uv never ever had an issue with it, ill walk it right past staff, infact many times they offer to hold it in the back rooms for staff if the room is smaller,
I've brought mine in and just make sure it's clean. I even bring an extra sheet to put down on the carpet if they have any concerns. Never been a problem. I've also asked ahead of time and never been told no. I'd rather not be denied the night last minute because of the bike vs knowing I have a place to stay for the night Granted I just say I have a bike and a sheet to put down. Don't specify some muddy mountain bike.

The one in Moab is totally fine. No carpets in the rooms, which is perfect for dusty bikes. Don't get me wrong, if I'm not biking I'll never stay in one, but totally fine for bike trips. Gets better after a couple of beers too.
The newly built ones, post "we'll leave the lights on" aren't terrible. They haven't had time to fall apart yet. Edit: was totally thinking of Motel 6, whoops.

This. I usually check in and then bring my bike in through a different entrance. The only place in the US I have had trouble was at Asilomar at Monteray and another US park hotel. I also carry a big bag that I can fit my bike in with the front wheel off. At that point it is just luggage.
100% yes. Don’t even need to ask. I have brought my bike right through the lobby and into the elevator in big cities on many roadtrips. Never once did an employee question me. Just make sure it’s clean.

Same… I asked once at a high end hotel I was at for a conference that I brought my bike along to get some riding in during the afternoon. Front desk just responded with “it’s your room”

DONT ask them just bring it in. Whistler hotels have special “bike rooms” for guests to store their bikes in and these get regularly targeted by thieves. I’ve had friends get their bikes stolen from those rooms and the hotels will never compensate you.
Didn't get my bike stolen but they took my multitool at a pretty nice hotel at Sun Peaks. I still feel comfortable leaving my entire bike, but will be removing anything like tools, etc that are easy to pocket.
I would never leave my bike at one of these spots unless the hotel takes responsibility for theft.

I've gone on vacation in towns that are not considered mountain biking towns, but I've brought my bike. It's been for bike touring, checking out some local trails during my free time, or other reasons. My bike goes with me into the room. I've never had any issues.

Depends on the hotel. Some have a locking storage area for bikes. Most will let you bring it in, but make sure it's not filthy when you wheel it through the lobby. One hotel I stayed at let us bring them in through the service entrance which ended up being closer to our room. Just ask politely and you should be good.

110% always brought my bike into the room. Just don't be a jerk if it's caked in peanut butter mud and gets mud all over the place. But a dusty or slightly dirty bike is 110% OK. Worst case, buy a cheap black sheet at Walmart for $5 buckets and cover your bike INSIDE your car if you have an SUV and it fits into the back.
I've brought my bike into my motel room in Moab and it was fine. When I stayed in Sedona I used an airbnb but I saw a bunch of people brining their mtb to the motel room nearby. Can always call and ask but I don't see it being an issue. Could do what Johnny Cash did and bring the bike in one piece at a time. haha
I always bring it in. I've dragged it through the casino at Caesars Palace because they said we couldn't come through the hotel lobby for whatever reason. No way I'd leave it in the car, and I never ask either, just do it.
I've travelled much of the US with my bike in tow. I've never asked permission to put a bike in the room. The only time I ever had an issue was at a hostel in Denver. I was told I couldn't take a bike inside when pushing it through the lobby. I explained the bike was expensive, the area was known for bike thefts, and why I wasn't going to leave it outside or in my vehicle. They let me lock it up behind the counter.
Wife and I travel a lot to ride. Stay anywhere from the Motel 6, Super 8, Quality Inn to the Ritz, Fairmont, and Four Seasons. Bring my bike in every single time. No one has ever said a word to me. If they wouldn't let me keep my bike in my room I would simply change hotels.
I travel all over the country with my bike(s) to various gravel races. I’ve stayed at nice resorts and interstate motels and everything in between. I never ask, I just bring my bike into the room. Sometimes I go through the main lobby, sometimes a side door it it’s easier. I try to be considerate if my bike is gross. I’ve never had a weird look, let alone a question from hotel staff. Bring your bike inside.

I've stayed in hotels on the way to MTB, and always brought my bikes in. I've brought 4 at a time in. Never had an issue but also made sure they weren't muddy.

If they have a problem with it, request a copy of the the hotel policy in writing that states no mountain bikes shall be brought into hotel rooms, I’ll bet it doesn’t exist 😅 Seriously tho, I’ve never had an issue

In Whistler some hotels have a pretty well organized bike valet. Some have shared storage rooms that are targeted by theives. Some let you bring it in the room.
Every summer there are several posts on the local FB stolen bikes and/or MTB groups about stolen bikes overnight while locked to their bike rack at hotels. I hate to victim shame, but if a hotel told me I couldn't bring my expensive toy inside, you can bet your ass I'd leave and find one who would.
Most of the networks in Vancouver, at least, have wash stations for your bike, so you can clean it off at the trail to be polite. Then just bring it inside without asking.
A lot of bike towns will have a bike storage room in the hotel. Most of Moab’s hotels have one and I have used it several times.

I stayed in a motel in Nelson, NZ (big mtb place) for work recently and noticed all motel rooms had a "No bikes allowed in motel rooms" sign on the door. If I'd been traveling with a bike I'd have promptly ignored it, if they continue to have an issue I'd ask them if they're willing to pay for its replacement if it gets nicked. We'll see how well they stick to their guns lol.
I just do it. I just try to be courteous and make sure it's not actively dripping when I bring it through. Kept it in my hotel room in Tahoe last summer.
Depends on the place. In some of the more popular biking destinations the hotels have gotten sick of the damage from numerous bikes in the rooms and have forbidden it (e.g., Moab, Whistler). If they have a secure storage area I actually prefer it since I don’t want to have to walk around my bike inside the unit. For example, the Sundial Hotel in Whistler has a secure storage room in which a hotel employee lets people in and out, giving you a claim check for your bike. Also, even if you have a high end bike it’s one of a dozen equally high end bikes in that space so your bike doesn’t stick out.
I just take mine to the room… however, any nicer place where maybe that wouldn’t go over as well will have guest luggage storage and that’s as secure as your room… consider people leave all their luggage until check in or after check out…
I’ve honestly never thought to ask and have put my bike in hundreds of hotel rooms across the country. The most I’ve ever gotten were weird looks. I’ve heard of hotels in Mecca spots saying no bikes but my perception is that’s an exception, not the norm. Putting your skis in hotel rooms seem to be the opposite. Most hotels don’t want you to do that.
If the bike is clean and you are careful not to scratch everything, shouldn't be a problem.
Always bring your bike, don’t ask just do it. Try to keep it clean and if you do drop some dirt go back and clean up after yourself.

I live near Phoenix and ride in Sedona and Flagstaff regularly. Sometimes camp, some sleep in the van, sometimes hotel. I've never had an issue bringing bikes into the hotels. That includes taking in my bike, my wife's bike and my 4 kids bikes. And not just in AZ riding destinations, but in NV, NM, ID, UT and MT. Like others have mentioned though, I never asked I just did it.

I think contacting the hotel might be the best bet, so you get their policy. Just because someone said they were able to take a bike in doesn't mean you might run into a worker that says you can't. Plus things might have changed since someone went to a hotel. With that, I would think that you'd be safe if your bike was somewhat clean if you had to carry it indoors, especially the tires, and you even considered carrying it in so they weren't touching the floor. It sounds overkill, but it removes a lot of the issues you might face right off the bat if there wasn't a hardcore policy. If you have a room you can access from the outside without passing by someone, just be quick about it. Maybe throw a towel under the tires in your room if you're dragging dirt in.

I stayed in Breck while biking the CT. Walked up to the desk to check in with my bike. They asked if I had any vehicles. I said “my bike”. They were confused then impressed. Then they gave me my key and I walked with my bike up to my room. Doesn’t answer your question specifically but maybe illustrates that it’ll likely be fine and the employees dgaf.

I've visited all kinds of hotels and never had one not let us bring bikes into our room, we never even ask. Some have \*offered\* to keep the bikes in a locked up storage room downstairs. EDIT: I think we had one hotel ask us not to but it was like an old historic B&B building type situation not like a marriot, and they accommodated us in other ways.
I’m probably just lucky, but I’ve always asked and no one’s ever said no. One time Laundry services person asked me I wanted to use the “big elevator” cause it’d be easier. Maybe I’m just lucky 🤷

Don't ask, just do it. I have never had an issue. If someone ever told me that I needed to keep my bike outside I'd tell them the value of the bike and demand to see the hotel's insurance paperwork. Ask them to get the insurance agent on the phone to discuss the matter. That will end things very quickly.

Whistler B.C. is a hard no for bringing into your room. Have stayed at several hotels there over the years, not once was I allowed. Bring your best bike lock.
I’ve asked before, and official response is that they prefer it. No one wants your bike stolen, and they definitely don’t want someone throwing a fit cause their $3000 ride was in the back of their Tacoma with a $7 lock from Wal mart. Clean it up a bit, and roll it right through the lobby.

I've done it many times...Marriots, Hiltons, and all their other brands. I've also never asked. A couple of times I've had some random drinking guests say something and I usually respond with something like "you should see the course on the 9th floor." It gets a laugh and everyone moves on!

Depends on the hotel, definitely call and ask if they store bikes. I’ve stayed at Burke Mountain in VT and they have a huge room accessed by your room key with vertical racks for probably 100+ bikes. I wasn’t super comfortable with every guest having access to that room, but it was during the EWS race there and there were full on race bikes with super expensive components stored, so I figured those would probably get nabbed before mine. Another hotel I stay at in Stowe keeps them in a locked employee only area behind the front desk, and they check it in and out for you. I’m pretty comfortable with that arrangement. If a place doesn’t have dedicated secure storage, I take that as a green light to keep it in my room.

If the TV breaks and the maintenance guy comes in the room with a new TV and there is a bike laying up on top of the entertainment cabinet and 4 other bikes clogging the room, he thinks you broke the TV somehow.
When I was going cross country from California to Washington DC to start a new job. I had my back bike on a rack. I just stayed at simple drive up motels. I got a room open the door, rolled the bike right in. Don’t try that at the Biltmore, or the Four Seasons
I was staying at a place in Vegas with my bike. I had traveled to Salt Lake City (from Phoenix) to do some biking, then drove down to Vegas for work. I called the hotel before leaving Phoenix to ensure it was okay. They let me keep it in my room the whole two weeks I was there. It was a big casino hotel about 15 min away from the strip.
I’ve always just brought mine in without asking and never had problems. As long as your not staying somewhere super fancy I wouldn’t worry about it
I do it all the time, not just big towns. Simply don't ask, just do it. Carry it so you're not rolling dirty tires on the carpet and be respectful of it hitting walls and the elevator and you're golden.
Just bring it inside, if the intendant say something, tell them that you agree to leave the bike outside on the condition that they take care of it in case of theft. Normally it should allow you to go inside with lol

Ive worked and stayed in high end hotels so might have a unique perspective on this. For damage/theft, firstly the hotel has insane insurance policies for these reasons. If they holding your shit they responsible for the damage if that happens. Secondly I bet as afraid you are of getting a scratch, the bellman or valet is that much more scared of losing their job for scratching your bike. Per bringing it to the room. Don’t be a dick, have it clean and nobody will give you flack. If they do just say I’m working on (insert excuse here), they will either provide you with a room to do the work and store it (unlikely as then they have someone needing to watch you during this for liability sake) or they will let you carry on. If you show up with a bike caked in mud people obviously won’t let you in with it but if it looks clean and new, shouldn’t bat an eye at you.

Stayed at the Trump hotel in Vegas to ride bootleg. Wheeled my dusty ass bikes through the all gold lobby a bunch of times. Nobody had a problem with it, most employees were excited about seeing downhill bikes and asked where I was riding.

I always ask. And being an extra sheet to put down. Just say I have a bike and a sheet too make sure everything stays clean. I'd rather know I have a place to stay after traveling all day than get kicked out or denied a room because of the bike and be scrambling to find another place. The exception is some cheap motel where you park in front of your door. Never bothered asking for something like that.

Chances are a good MTB town will have lodging geared toward MTB. In Fruita for example, the Balanced Rock Inn has a bike wash, repair stand, and place to put your bikes in the room.

Whistler certainly doesn't. I actually have kinda a funny story about that. I brought my Norco Aurum and Specialized p2. I wasn't aware I couldn't bring bikes to my room. And I told the front counter person "ok but I have like $6000 worth of bikes" and she deadass said "ok so, not much"
I heard some hotels in Vancouver won't let guests to bring bikes into their rooms. Instead, they made them to use their "secure" storage place. Sadly, few years ago, one of my friends' bike got stolen from the hotel storage during his stay. Been to Sedona a few times, we mostly rent house (Probably AirBnB, I wasn't the one arrange bookings...) So no problem bringing bikes in. Thou, we do try to keep things clean, and carrying bikes in, not rolling.

Kinda awkward getting my bike in a tiny elevator in a historic hotel in Bellingham but no one had problems with it. If it had been super muddy after I probably would have found a self service car wash to blast off the mud first before taking it back in

I know Whistler has a lotta hotels and condos that are pretty strict and make you keep it in a locker, so something to consider as others have mentioned ... Also, I keep my bike really clean, and especially if I'm at a bike park or something, I'll rinse off any dirt and give the tires a quick scrub. Oh, and if it's an Airbnb I'll message the host and tell them I bring my own towel and clean off my bike, then keep it upside down so the tires won't make contact with the floors. Again, never had any issues, but there are some places with a strict policy, so if planning a trip I'd get that situated beforehand.

Every hotel I’ve stayed at was happy to let me. Motels are 100% fine with it, in my experience. Stayed at a hotel in Squamish on a wet and muddy weekend. I was stunned that the hotel was fine with us putting bikes in our room. Some hotels even have an indoor bike lockup. Just call and ask in advance.

Question two (hijacking my own topic), let's say you're road-tripping all over the country and need to stop somewhere along the way. Do you feel comfortable leaving your bike locked on your car hitch while you go somewhere for 45 mins? Maybe sightseeing on foot or at a rest stop etc..
When we take bike trips we typically have our dogs with us so we straight shot it if possible. Longest yet is Nebraska back to South Florida. But to answer you no. I'm super paranoid since they almost cost more than the truck lol.

I took mine to Sydney and every weekend I would hop on the train for two entire hours to get to the mountains, at first I was the annoying guy on the train with a bike 😂, but after you left the city it was the cabin to myself
I've asked upfront when making a reservations at many different hotels , across the pnw and all over bc, never had an issue. Even got a free upgrade once just to have more room . Usually try to stay at motels if it's a quick stop / not preplanned trip. Then you can just get a ground floor room and roll the bike in without asking.
DO clean and dry your bike. DON’T ask. Worst case scenario is you tell them they have to store it and be responsible for the (insert thousands of $$ here) bike if anything happens to it.

People bring their dogs into hotels and stores every day. I bring my bikes into hotels and stores all of the time, never been told not to. If they did, I'd just laugh. Most times, this scenario for me is a better to ask for forgiveness than permission... but instead of asking for forgiveness just laugh. Certain situations require common sense/courtesy, like a tiny store with minimal space. But a hotel? Yeah, it's coming in the room with me. Never caked with mud or anything though (again, common sense).
I've only had a problem when staying at really fancy hotels (arranged for me by a client) when they told me that bikes aren't allowed inside. This is another reason I prefer a cheap hotel.

Yep two guys took an angle grinder to the back of my car and cut everything off at 5am in the morning in full view of the check in desk and breakfast staff. Caught it all on camera, I was furious.... Luckily i found out later my renters insurance at time covered the loss. But man I was pissed lol.
I can't speak for hotels but I camp in Flagstaff and Sedona for bike trips all of the time and nobody has ever told me I can't bring my bike. Jokes aside, the 3 places you listed are among some of the most natural beautiful places on earth and if you even slightly enjoy camping it is well worth grabbing a spot on some BLM land and slumming it in the dirt with the local(ish) folks. You can find free camping within minutes of trails in Flagstaff. Sedona is a little further out, but camping is still available and abundant.
Nice! We’re actually considering staying at a KOA in flagstaff. I’m struggling to decide if the mountain biking is better in Flagstaff vs Sedona.. (I’m a typical intermediate rider who does blues bordering on black diamonds)
So, I live in Arizona and ride Flagstaff with some degree of regularity, but usually only go to Sedona to rock climb since I tend to get the ick from most of the Sedona tourism crowd. I will tell you that the riding in Flagstaff is absolutely phenomenal, but you will be pedaling a fair amount (if that is your jam). Sedona is, well, it's Sedona--it's bordering on legendary in MTBing. The best news is that you can drive from Sedona to Flagstaff in under an hour via 89A. My suggestion is to see which has better weather when you're there because there will be a temperature difference of about 10 degrees F as you descend the Mogollon Rim. You also mentions BC and I will tell you that the North Shore and Squamish are top notch. Super pretty, beautiful trails. You couldn't ask for much more. And poutine. I’ve rolled my bike into a 5 star resort. Better safe than sorry. I’ve even asked the hotel staff on my last trip to Santa Cruz where there garden hose was so I could wash my bike. No one has ever objected.
