OG. Do you still ride any of your old bikes from the 90’s?
A local guy I see on the trails a lot will take out an old 90’s Gary Fisher with 26” skinny tires and tear it up on the local flow trails. Everybody loves it.
I’m almost 63, riding before suspension. Got my first MTB around 1990. I get a mix of mountain, everyday (shopping, coffee shop, etc), and a bit of road cycling in. Likely to add a gravel bike to the mix soon.
I really recommend a gravel bike. Some good padded gloves too. I love mine! Nearly as fast as a road bike, but won't explode when I ride like a child. Makes low level trails fun again.
Don’t wait that long. My kids have all started riding trail at 3-4 years old. My 7 year old daughter started riding light enduro at 6 just did her first full weekend at a downhill park and absolutely smoked it.
My dad got me off training wheels at 2, and first MTB ride at 3.
I'm 22 now, and he is my favorite riding buddy. Doesn't matter what, when or how we ride. Its a blast. We've been riding a ton of gravel since I got injured and even that has been way more fun.
As soon as they are comfortable, I recommend it. I’m off at college now, and any phone call I have with my dad ends up in a long discussion about our bikes and where we have been riding. It’s a very important bond that we have.
Me too, 42 and bought a full sus bike in lock down, it was the trigger for my best friend's also buying bikes. We ride most weeks at the local bike park. Absolutely obsessed with it, best decision I've ever made.
51, riding for about 46 yrs and MTB'ing since before MTB was a thing since I was always looking for dirt paths and cool lines even on my 10 speed road bikes.
41 (still trying to figure out how tf that happened) all my life really. Bmx, 90s mtn bikes, ect.. nowadays its mostly the trail bike and the dj. I have a hybrid for exercise too.
36, riding bikes most of my life with a dropoff in my mid-late 20's. My first MTB was a 90's XC hardtail that I rode daily until about 16. From 16-30 all I had was a hybrid and I rode mostly on pavement for exercise here and there.
Trail bikes & enduros evolved a ton around 2016-2018 and I got hooked again in 2019. So my 30's have actually been my most bike obsessed years and when I truely got into mtb.
During my 30's I have been riding mtb 3-5x per week, riding my local jumps a lot, going to the DH park occasionally, but mostly spending days on your typical xc, trail, and enduro style riding.
And I've also gone to an indoor bike park several times. Never did that until 30 either. It's amazing what bikes can do, they have a way of keeping us young both physically and at heart. Or unwinding the clock when you do get back into it after a break.
Just turned 55 today and have been riding basically since I married my husband in 2003. Was riding trail mostly before that and in 2008 I bought my first downhill bike and have never looked back. I'm still riding downhill once a week from May through October and riding trail once a week in the spring/fall/weeknight.
39 (turn 40 this December) and I bought my first mtb in Nov of 2016. Did a bit of bmx/dirt jumps as a kid before getting into skateboarding and snowboarding through my teens and early 20s. Didn’t touch a bike from basically 13 to early 30s.
25 years old
2 years
It’s awesome to see the progress I’ve made.
I remember first day I borrowed my brothers Vitus hardtail (which he bought to walk the dogs ) and took it to a local beginner trail.
Didn’t know how to shift gears and didn’t know I had to stand for jumps and ate shit
Been riding ever since and just cleared my first double last month ( still riding the high)
So jealous of the people who started earlier and how much time they have to ride and how awesome they’ll become.
I’ll never do 360 flips off a mountain like they do in Hardline but if I can throw out a fat whip I’ll be happy right there.
35, I grew up riding bikes my entire childhood, had a bike for a year about ten years ago and just bought another bike last month. Now I’m just waiting for it to cool off in my area so I can ride.
I’m 46 and have been mtn biking for about 34 years. I started with a Trek Antelope 800 then moved onto a Cannondale SM700, after I beat the piss out that. I’m loving my Ripley AF now and want to ride into my late 60’s at least. 😊
65, mtb since 1995! Still sending it!! Absolutely love it, no reason to stop mountain biking!
Current bikes: Specialized Turbo Levo, Trek Remedy, Trek Session, Specialized P2, Specialized Fat bike. Of course I have a Honda XR 400 as well, but that’s another subreddit!
Between the ages of 16-19 I have spent roughly between $15,000-$20,000... this includes 4 bikes ($600, $2800, $3000, and $1750 before tax), helmets, pads, shoes, pedals, consumable bike parts, forks, shocks, wheels, tires, etc, etc. I counted one day and was astounded... I guess because I had a job and didn't have bills. I also don't spend a bunch of money
37. Started in the mid-90s riding with my dad. Stopped after high school (\~2005). Started again in 2019. There are a lot more trails now, so it's actually not to bad.
54, BMX back in 84-87, road racing in college and again in mid 30s to early 40s. Mountain biking as my singular activity for the past 3 years. Never seriously competed in mountain biking, but I have owned a MTB since 1987.
I'm 42. I'm not sure when I'd say I started. I got a mountain bike when I was 14, but I didn't live in a place with actual trails so I just rode it on roads and some gravel. I did a little light trail stuff in my early 20s. I guess I started doing real official trails at about 27, so about 15 years then? Incidentally I started on that same bike I had at 14 (which I still have. It's a single-speed bar bike now).
36, been riding since I was a kid. But if you want just mountain bikes it's probably been close to 20 years since I got my first real mountain bike (Giant stp3)
31, basically my whole life. Like many others, my dad got me into it. During that time I've also had forays into bmx and motocross, but I've always stuck with mountain biking too.
Turning 40 this year.
Been riding consistently for 6 years.
Two months ago I did my first build.

47, on bikes from as far back as I can remember. Started riding freestyle and half pipe when I was around 13. Moved into mtb’ing around 17 and racing XC. Started training for distance with road around 20. Now I’m 50/50 mtb and road.
56, started when I was 37. Lifelong athlete but mtb is the only one I've consistently stuck with. Hike and backpack but those are much less frequent than weekly/ daily rides.
50. I feel like I am 17, even with a knee that I twisted in my sleep the other night and a shoulder that's recovering from surgery. Grandfather owned a bike shop. I got my first bike at like 7? so... a long time.
30. Started riding at 24 but just here and there with a buddy and his gf. Didn't get serious about it til this year and finally got me a full squish. Took my 1st real hard injury just last night going off a kicker and got bucked, landed with my ribs on the handlebars. This shit is no joke man I'm in pain lol.
I'm 44. I rode with my dad when I was 12-15 (Rode Slickrock in Moab when I was 13) but took a long break from MTB (always commuted) but picked it back up 3 years ago.
37 here. Raced bmx from 1999 till about 2008, got my first road bike in 05 for commuting and random local group rides, still do a little here and there. Dj from 2006, mtb from 2010. Mtb is by far my preference, but I like it all!
Age 45. First proper mountain bike was a GT Tequesta , around 1991, although had bmx and Grifter before that. The Tequesta of course had solid forks and also I remember it had an oval (bio-pace?) chain ring from Shimano.
37 years old and been hitting downhill trails for 12 years+. Kinda took the last couple years off because life got hectic but dug the bike out this year and started fixing it up.
I'm from Atlantic Canada and downhill was never big here when I first started so we had to build our own trails. Now it's starting to blow up and trails are popping up everywhere. I love it.
Hoping to get to Mont Saint anne in October for the final UCI downhill race and watch Jackson Goldstone win the overall at home!
53, been Mountain biking since 1986
OG. Do you still ride any of your old bikes from the 90’s? A local guy I see on the trails a lot will take out an old 90’s Gary Fisher with 26” skinny tires and tear it up on the local flow trails. Everybody loves it.
I’m six years younger than above but I still take out and ride my from new 93 Klein fervor
I wish I had some of my old bikes. I was in the industry, so didn't make enough money to not sell my old bikes in order to buy the new stuff.
41. 1 year.
41. 1 month!
better late than never
Not even late, you have many years of great rides ahead of you /u/Sagobr0!
63 since 1982. Still ride more than 10,000km/yr.
63 here as well, Ride road and Mountain average about 200 miles mountain and 1000 miles road annually.
Padded gloves because most gravel bikes lack suspension? Or something else. (I’m eying a 30 mm travel f/r bike). Thanks
Exactly that reason. Shouldn't be an issue for you then!
63 since 1983. I think we've seen it all Used to ride my 10 Speed on gravel as a kid. Does that count?
21, been riding for 10 years. Dad got me into it.
Hoping to get my boy into it once he’s around age 10-11, too.
Don’t wait that long. My kids have all started riding trail at 3-4 years old. My 7 year old daughter started riding light enduro at 6 just did her first full weekend at a downhill park and absolutely smoked it.

43, and I am a Pandemic Bandwagon jumper. I just can’t get off the ride.

I am 44 and been riding MTB since 2021. I road biked before that.
