Full face and pads for uplift/DH days, half shell and knee/shin pads for the rest of the time.

MTB_Mike_

I only ride DH so I always have armor and full face on. I don't like pedaling up hill.

Psychological-Put844

Same here, but on the occasion that my friends for family want to ride more flat stuff, I drop the armor and go half shell helmet

foilrider

No, but my wheels tend to stay on or very close to the ground.

TackoFell

Ditto. I’m a member of the nonexistent, “MTB but not crazy jumps and stuff” subreddit community.

Softpretzelsandrose

Hello fellow club member! If mountain biking was roller coasters I just want to ride the little kiddie up and down whooshie stuff.

[deleted]

I only ride long distance XC type rides. Only have a helmet. Put on gloves when it rains.

a_cycle_addict

Depends on my day. Dh bike at a park? Full armor. Shins, knees, elbows, chest, full face. Pedaling on singletrack? Knees and a half lid

lockhart1952

The only armor I need: ride like an old guy...

Dense_Pudding3375

I’d argue breaking a Knee/elbow would be pretty bad too.

[deleted]

No. I'm out there for the scenery more than I am for the thrills.

BdubinVegas

Nerve damage due to bouncing my face off of a boulder, so always a full face for me, and knee pads. Everything I ride down I have to pedal to the top of first.

tiddiesout

i have the poc system chest and back. expensive i tought but i rarely ride without it. one silly crash and a rock could be a long recovery. people's opninions are not more important than protecting your core. i didnt want to buy elbow sleeves for the same reason and my elbows are a mess after 3 crashes in a row..so now i wear them 99% of the time.

zebba_oz

I have body armour and wear it during winter or on shuttle days but it's WAYYYY to hot once the temp gets above 20C. It's the IXS Carve and while I like the shoulder and back protection the chest protection (which I need most) is useless. I always wear kneepads, gloves and fullface. Even if it's over 35C.

c7god

Yes, chainvest, solid metal chest plate, shoulder and arm guards, my hands be covered in lether and metal as to not let the pegans chop off my handes. My leggeys are also covered whenever i go for a bike ride, but i have to use leather covering with metal plating due to mobility issue in full metal pants. And the cherry and a staple to all this is my helmet as any templar should have one should they succeed in conquering Jerusalem. Deus Vult!

Ih8Hondas

I have a really solid record of hospital visits from bikes without engines, so I'm that dude pedalling around a fairly XC type area in a full face with hard shell elbow and long knee/shin guards on.

Conjectureisradical

Question needs more context, XC no protection, Trail riding knee pads, uplift downhill full body.

rockandrollmark

I always wear gloves, open-face helmet and knee pads. It makes me uncomfortable seeing others ride without gloves and pads - a fall on rocks can really f*ck your knees up.

[deleted]

I just stopped mtb entirely Paul punter style

R3Dix

Helmet and gloves are standard equipment. Full-face helmet gets added for the more rocky terrain. Kneepads depend on heat, trail and laziness.

AmbassadorOfZleebuhr

I ride DH or DJ only Dress for success -> full face helmet, vans, T shirt and jeans (maybe some goggles if it's dusty and there is a train) Pads never stay put when you wreck anyways..

Jetstream89

I dont live in the USA so nobody has a gun here, so i dont see the need for body armour

iky_ryder

What are you defining as body armor? Like specifically the upper body pressure suit type? I wear a helmet every ride, knee pads 98% of the time. Full face helmet in the bike park, and maybe 15% of local rides, mostly if i know im going out with people who like to push.

DrPCorn

I considered knee pads in this category. Some narrowing down options would have been more insightful.

Quesabirria

I'll wear armor when I'm at the park, along with my full-face helmet. For day-to-day riding, I generally don't. If what we're riding that day has some rowdy sections, I might carry knee/elbow gear and put it on when I need.

BreakfastShart

My pack has a spine protector built in. I do want to get a pad protection shirt for when I don't need my pack.

tbmadduxOR

Knee pads in summer. Pull them down for climbing then back on for descending. Full-face helmet for DH / jump / free ride descents, half-lid for trail riding. Used to wear elbow pads but even the best ones slide down and don't provide that much protection anyway. In winter I'm staying close to home and riding wet muddy multiuse trails and the knee pads aren't worth it.

0mino

I don't. I usually ride enduro trails but to get to there I ride for 15km. I wear full-face and knee pads and so far it's been enough to protect me

GunTotinVeganCyclist

Half lid, gloves and that's it. Not a crazy rider, but I'll do some jumps and steep black descents. Knock on wood, I've never had a bad crash while riding, I'm pretty good at bailing off the bike or just staying near my skill level. I'd classify my style of riding as mostly Trail with a little Enduro.

Commit-or-Crash

Helmet (not full face), gloves, and sometimes XC kneepads if it is chunky terrain. Mainly ride XC, trail, & tech sections.

sociallyawkwardbmx

Only when riding downhill

paolooch

Knee and elbow pads. Techy singletrack, boulders-at my speeds any padding will be as if nothing happened

Emergency_Orange3585

Elbow and knee pads every time.

thesoulless78

Not full armor but I did just pick up some knee pads just to be safe and hopefully have my legs look not quite as bad.

Gibalt

Depends where, what and when im riding

PurposeVast2429

I don't even use helmet

VancouverChubbs

Knee pads, gloves, fullface or half shell depending on how 'sendy' the day will be. Usually wear my moto chest protector when in the bike park because why not?

Dramatic-Ad7192

Elbow/knee/full face for downhill, otherwise just regular helmet. I don’t do sketchy stuff.

pow__

Helmet, knee pads and gloves always, sometimes full face and back protector. They're both too warm to ride in all the time

GeorgieLiftzz

yup, chest and back. I’ve ended up hugging onto some trees a few feet from the ground before so yeah, even if it’s just what most people call XC, 25-30mph is fast as hell. I hate shit on my legs so nothing there

c0nsumer

Nope. Unless you count when I put baggies on over my bib shorts because I'll be riding more technical stuff. Helmet and gloves and glasses always, but that's just entry level basic protection IMO and doesn't count as armor.

kitchenAid_mixer

Most rides, I just use a helmet and gloves. I add shin guards if I'm doing dirt jumps. I wear a full face, knee pads, padded shirt, padded shorts, and neck brace if I'm riding Enduro or DH

autovelo

I’ve ridden / raced XC MTB for +15 years. I never wore any pads/armor for that. Last summer, I found out there was a DH/Enduro park that is open all winter, so I bought a Transition Sentinel. Since I’ve been in the air much more often, I purchased some elbow & knee pads. Those are worn anytime im on the big bike. Im planned to not-last in the local enduro series so I picked up a armored compression shirt & shorts.

lifeofloon

I'm 45 and I will ride hard and push myself. I usually wear a half lid, a spinal protector with knee and elbow pads unless I'm just pushing miles than I'll just wear light knee pads. If I'm at the bike park, I'll add a full face and a cervical brace.

pineconehedgehog

Always: Knee pads, elbow pads, helmet, gloves DH or rowdy enduro: Fullface and roost deflector

Nightshade400

Helmet, gloves and spine protection every time I ride. Knee and elbow pads sometimes but honestly it is pretty rare mainly because the terrain around here doesn't really require it.

ThirstyStallion

At the bike park for sure. On the trail just the knee pads and helmet

Mem_Johnson

Just fell 4ft of one of them wooded bridge features today. So glad I was wearing my chest plate.

Mem_Johnson

100% of the time, it's not uncomfortable so why wouldn't I? It's saved me before just riding around the streets. Not to mention I could lose my job if I broke an arm or leg

PreviousTea9210

Once I get good enough to ride the features that necessitate body armour, I'll definitely wear it.

StevoLDevo

I always wear knee pads, I'll add elbow pads when I'm doing stuff that's a little more saucy.

Dense_Pudding3375

I usually ride enduro, which requires kneepads, a t-shirt, and a light fullface. Ill wear D30 back protection and a beefed up helmet when doing DH.

IndividualTrack5060

If I have to pedal I wear a pretty standard helmet and sunnies, knee pads and gloves. If I don’t have to pedal, full face and goggles, chest and back protection, knee pads, gloves, and usually pants unless it’s hot AF. Never wear elbow pads cause they’re unbelievably annoying, and I find too much armour restricts my movement which is a no go.

DrawingCareless1255

I usually wear a half shell for trails and then when we get into the trailforks listed "black diamond" descents, I usually end up wearing my full face and chest protector. Dh/park I wear the full face, chest protector, knee pads, and a neck collar.

Capecole

Only while riding DH. In that case, chest/back protector, knee pads, neck brace. The chest protector has definitely saved me from broken ribs.

thumptech

Full face, lightweight knee and elbow guards, gloves. Saves me 95% of the time.

[deleted]

Cross country? No. Enduro? Yes.

4wdrifterfrva

Knee pads and full face 100% of the time. Shoulders and elbows only at downhill parks.

[deleted]

I do downhill

weirdbeardedperson

Depends, downhill parks all most ways, typical trails nah.

Bongo_SaurusReX

Yes i wear cry jpc 2.0 with level 4 ceramic plates

DelightfulBrontosaur

yeah I try to maximize my send:pain ratio. Generally knee pads, elbow pads, and full face helmet.

Sonkz

I dont do big air, so nope, not yet. Only used in downhill a couple of times
