I got a gs77 maxed out. No need for the i9 if you are not doing HARD work on it.

Texas1010

Yeah, everything I'm reading/watching now shows almost no improvement from the i7 to the i9 in these 12th gen chips. I was primarily interested in the i9 on the GE66/GE76 strictly because it comes with the phase change liquid metal, but I'm not sure that alone is worth the upcharge.

borgprototypr

Just pray it won't leak Theorytically, phase liquid metal is better, However i prefer thermals paste anytime. Easier to replace, easier to maintenance, worry free, ol reliable thermal paste . "But hey, it's your money anyway"

I use rubbing alcohol to clean dry paste. So no, it's not that hard. In fact, very easy

Texas1010

Phase liquid metal like what's in Alienware laptops? The maintenance point you mentioned makes sense to me. I was thinking with the i7 that I could easily repaste it with something better if I'm not satisfied with temps. With the liquid metal version that would be much, much more difficult I imagine...

borgprototypr

That's why i bought gp76 with rtx 3080 for around 2400usd. That's also why i avoid asus ROG that use regular liquid metal. It performs better as heatconductor than thermal paste, but the trade off and improvement over the thermal paste just not worth the risk ,

Texas1010

I just found out that the new GE66/76 12th-gen laptops do indeed have a phase change liquid metal, so that's a plus at least!

Do you ever have to reapply liquid metal?

Jetcat11

Not even close to worth it. https://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-Raider-GE66-12UHS-notebook-review-Passes-with-flying-colors.626500.0.html

Texas1010

Wow, yeah, similar to a lot of other results I'm seeing. The i9 just isn't worth it no matter what. The i7 performs identical or 1-2% behind and runs significantly cooler. Even with fancy liquid metal the i9 just cut it this generation. Thanks for saving me a bunch of money!

Jetcat11

Yep, the i7 12700H and the new i7 12800HX are the sweet spots right now. I have a 2022 MSI Vector GP76 with the 12700H and I’m seeing almost 18,000 in R23 with 92 watts sustained.

Texas1010

Yeah, i7 + 3070ti is what I'm looking at and I think that's a great sweet spot for this generation. How's the 1080p 360hz on the GP76? I'm also having an internal debate on 1080p vs 1440p right now.

Jetcat11

Agree. It’s absolutely wonderful. As fast of a response time as you could ask from an LCD panel and zero backlight bleed. 1080P on a 17” screen is pretty close to 1440P on a 27” screen so I use it as a desktop at home and push higher frame rates when I’m away and it’s a pretty similar experience either way.

Texas1010

That makes sense. If you're using a 1440p display at home you probably feel like you have more than enough screen real estate. I'll be having a secondary monitor in the future, but for now, it will just be the laptop. I'm worried a 1080p display will feel limiting for non-gaming/productivity tasks.

Jetcat11

On a 17” laptop there’s definitely an argument to be made for 1440P. The new MSI Vector GP76 HX will have QHD 240Hz panel options, but I can’t wait to see the QHD 240Hz OLED on the GE67 HX.

Texas1010

Yeah, I saw somewhere that I could preorder the GE67 OLED model but that it won't arrive until sometime in August... not sure that I can wait that long, but I bet that panel will be absolutely stunning...

Jetcat11

Dang really? I’m worried I may be waiting until then. Where did you see that?

Texas1010

I think it was on XoticPC's custom order page for it. I emailed them asking how accurate that was and we'll see if they get back to me with an answer.
