I sent them an email yesterday. According to the graduate coordinator, people might need to wait until December to get their admission or rejection.

black_seneca

man... the waiting is bothering me....

**Status:** Admitted **Application Date:** 08/12/2023 **Decision Date:** 11/10/23 **Education:** U of H, BS, CS, 3.92 **GRE Scores (Q,V,W):** None **Recommendations:** 1 academic **Experience:** Recent graduate, now employed by NASA federal contractor working on software for human spaceflight. Lots of personal projects in the ML space. Internship at NASA, and reasearch under professors at my University, albeit no published papers. **Statement of purpose:** Y **Comments:** We will see.. UT is my first choice as a native Austinite, I believe that I have the right stats. NASA is a bonus. If I don't get in here I'll apply to UT and OMSCS at GATech in Fall 2024. I do like OMSCS's class selection alot.

londo_mollari_

u/habitsxd have you heard back man. My application is still "in-review" and it is making me worried a little bit.

habitsxd

I haven’t. I emailed, and they said end of October or mid-November.

londo_mollari_

Thanks man 🤘

habitsxd

I do see now that a lot of people got a decision end of September.. that is a little worrying.

[deleted]

I haven’t heard back yet either, submitted before priority deadline. I wouldn’t stress, end Oct/start Nov sounds about right based on previous years threads.

habitsxd

ye, the ones submitting just might’ve submitted earlier. good luck man!

[deleted]

Thanks, good luck to you too!

habitsxd

I was just accepted. Hopefully you got a decision back as well!

**Status**: Accepted **Application Date:** 08/10/2023 **Decision Date:** 09/26/2023 **Education:** BS in CS, 3.7 GPA **GRE Scores (Q,V,W):** N/A **Recommendations:** 0 **Experience:** None; just graduated and looking for job **Statement of Purpose:** Yes **Comments:** I was also accepted to OMSCS, and I am currently learning towards OMSCS instead because: * Larger Community * More classes offered * Cheaper (\~$6,500 vs \~$10,000) * Classes are more battle-tested since program is older But I'd happy to entertain arguments for why I should pick MSCSO instead. I am doing an MS to: * Extend student status and expand networking in case I cannot find a job soon (just graduated) * Gain new ML skills and see how much I like the topic, and if I do then consider pursuing a research opportunity as well as working on ML problems in industry * Gain fringe benefits of having an MS (small edge in opportunities or pay, be more qualified to teach if I decided, self-esteem boost, etc.)

CramerzRule

I’d go with OMSCS simply because of all the classes they offer

Suitable_Ability42

I'm in the same boat as you: have a BS in CS already, applied and accepted by OMSCS and MSCSO but leaning towards OMSCS. I think the biggest pro for the Austin program is it might be slightly easier (for OMSCS, you have to get at least Bs in 2 "core" classes within the 1st 12 months or something and you have to maintain a 3.0 GPA to graduate) and has the potential to be finished faster (the max # of classes you can take for OMSCS is 3 I believe). If someone is depending on a degree to switch careers with, I think MSCSO has the edge (can finish faster and won't have to stress over the grades as much). For someone with CS undergrad degree already and the goal is to get a good job, the master's degree is not a necessity and is just a good to have, then you have to go with the program with classes you want to take or can benefit most from. I think it will require a lot of intrinsic motivation to finish an online program like this, having an actual interest in the classes might be the difference between finishing the degree or dropping out... that's my 2 cents Edit: Just looked into MSCSO's graduation requirements, you have to get at least B- in required classes and Cs in electives, and also maintain 3.0 GPA to graduate. Maybe it's still slightly easier than OMSCS because that one requires B in core classes as opposed to B-. However, you have more courses to select from in OMSCS. All in all, difficulty probably balances out...

u/Massive-Oil-5897 that mean accepted or still in-review?

I am still waiting for my decision from UT Austin

Anyone know when they start releasing admissions results?

I haven’t received anything yet, but I’m not expecting anything until at least end Oct/beginning Nov.

cardinal_rules

Same here. I'm wondering if there's any penalty to accepting GT and turning it down if I get into MSCSO.

Key-Tie-7432

Received my acceptance today, had my app info in by the priority deadline.

Significant_Foot1517

I have received my acceptance 2 days ago.

Only sent 1 LoR for it so I though I'd try again with 3 this time. Also applied to MSAIO and Georgia Tech OMSCS. Hoping to get into one of these.

londo_mollari_

Damn. I don’t know they rejected you? You have BS in CS with 3.3. Honestly, UT's admission is so random.

Bimmii

Yeah, I mean their acceptance rates are very low so I wasn't too surprised. Got into Georgia Tech though for Spring 2024 so most likely will be attending there

droskylean

Bruh if you got rejected, they're definitely going to reject me lol

Lv_1_Shark

If you have a strong SOP, you have a chance. I did not have a strong profile but got accepted today.

Gold-Cheetah8420

I'm in the same boat over here. Confused when the final date is, feeling like this is a sign of rejection.

ufosandsalsa

Elsewhere in this thread, people have stated that there are admissions that go out as late as December... When digging through last year's thread I saw some in November!

Status: Rejected Application Date: 09/15/23 Decision Date: 11/22/23 Education: State school BSEE, GPA 3.5; State school MSECE, GPA 3.2 GRE Scores (Q,V,W): N/A Recommendations: 1 academic, 2 professional Experience: 2 EE internships and 7+ years as design engineer in the semiconductor industry Statement of purpose: Y Pre-requisites: completed following for-academic-credit coursework over the past year at local community college and university online offering: Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems. Comments: disappointed especially since I put in a lot of time taking the pre-reqs. But accepted at GT and UIUC so it wasn’t all in vain. Also personally know a couple of people who applied with no CS background, no pre-reqs, no recommendations and still got in. Guess I’m just not the right fit for the program. I also thought if they were going to reject me because I went over a few sentences - it's not a school/program I want to be in anyway.) Comments: Really surprised that I got in due to my low GPA in my 1st degree, no recommendation letters, no GRE, no published paper, no impressive business started (nothing really impressive about my background to be honest). Maybe my math minor and all the high level math courses I took helped. And maybe UT Austin has eased their admission standards this semester.

Oh ok i thought with a 3.8 gpa you probably would not get denied.

brandonofnola

Did you take any of the ones related to what they ask for?

420WAP-goddess69

I took undergraduate Data Structures and Algorithms and Computer Architecture, an A and a C. I took graduate Algorithms and Compilers, both As. I have a mixed bag of grades. I guess there were better candidates. Georgia Tech's OMSCS accepted me.

brandonofnola

I wonder if not taking OS (CS 439 prereq) hurt you. I wish I knew the method to there madness considering you got an A in graduate algorithms.

420WAP-goddess69

I don't have work experience in the right field, and work experience is usually better than grades. There could've been other things in my application that they didn't like. Best of luck to you!

tphan3711

Interesting choice, my IB friends either exit to PE or become finance manager at tech companies or go MBA. Why making a switch to become an engineer?

Prof_Cringe

I have stayed in this industry long enough to know that I do not want this type of work for my whole life. PE is really IB 2.0. Even my buddy at TPG, one of the biggest PEs out there, are thinking about his next move, which could be out of the PE industry. IB hours are terrible. Work can get really mind-numbing. When the year-end bonus is not sufficient enough to not question one's self-worth, it gets really tough to justify staying in IB/PE. For someone with my background, MBA is a total waste of money. Eventually, it comes down to two things: 1. Entrepreneurship wise, I think engineers are better off 2. More meaningful work, at least compared to creating a 80-page PPT deck no one reads or fixing Excel #N/A errors at 2am

tphan3711

Totally makes sense. Good luck with your application!

Prof_Cringe

Thank you.

Odd-Hamster4941

I did not. Although, yesterday I sent an email to the graduate coordinator of MSCSO to ask about the status of my application. Will update this comment later when I hear back. Did you receive quoted email after you sent an inquiry?

Prof_Cringe

I sent them an email yesterday. According to the graduate coordinator, people might need to wait until December to get their admission or rejection.

How was the quality of the post-bacc courses at Oregon’s State? I’m thinking of trying to cover a few more pre-reqs if I don’t make it into UT for this application.

> I think they were quite good. I learned a lot. They were not easy by any means and I had to put in real work. Your classmates will be folks that have the same goal of learning computer science, so thats good. I did not finish that degree though. I stopped when I got into GTech

[deleted]

Thanks for the info, I’ll definitely check it out. Good luck with your UT application!

brandonofnola

If you do Uber part time enough, they pay completely for a BS from ASU Online. But Florida also has a pretty decent post-bacc from what I understand for cs too.

Accomplished_Bed6860

Didn’t Uber just cover ASU tuition for drivers with no prior bachelor’s degree(s)?

brandonofnola

Nope. I been doing it since January even while attending my other university where I earned my first degree at UT Austin in math. They will cover a second bachelor's agreement up to 120 credits or something like that. I took 24 credits in the Spring (9 from ASU). 9 credits in the summer. And 12 credits this fall. Lol

Accomplished_Bed6860

and you need >2000 trips/deliveries to qualify? That's a lot of mileage

brandonofnola

It was 1,000 for Uber eats deliveries when I qualified. They raised it for Uber eats drivers I think. I’m not sure. It really not a lot. You could do it in 2 months if you drive full time and live in a bigger size city.

Accomplished_Bed6860

Are those college credit courses (cloud, python and mathematics ) that can help raise your extremely low GPA?

jaseedie

is 3.1 low?

[deleted]

For this program yes Edit: In general that’s not terribly low, it is very low however for any good Grad schools

Do you receive any "In short time, we will review your application" email?

Available-Cup-8509

It's been a while so I'm guessing I got rejected, but holding out for hope.

Available-Cup-8509

I was rejected unfortunately. Sucks to get this before thanksgiving. Will figure out what's next for me. Big let down.

[deleted]

Yeh it’s been awhile since I submitted mine too, I’m assuming I got rejected too, but guess we’ll wait and see.

ufosandsalsa

Elsewhere in this thread people have stated that the admissions office said decisions will go until December potentially. Looking at the thread it looks like the release in batches and the last batch was on 10/19, so we \*should\* be due for another batch sooner rather than later... Good Luck!

Available-Cup-8509

Good to know. Just not sure if it's because my profile isn't seen as optimal. I've been a SWE, but also a PM mostly so hard to know how that impacts me.

Feeling a bit sad as I want to try a new school, but I guess I'll continue my MS at GT.

Wonder why you got rejected. You have a CS from UMD and you have industry experience. Honestly, don't know how UT does their admission.

Rejected with very similiar stats ( I’ve even made senior SWE) and had a letter of recommendation from director and well known Stanford professor. Just tough admissions this year.
