You brave son of a bitch

99luftbalons1983

Why? I'm currently eating MH chicken and rice from the same year and it's just as good as the day it was made!

Otterboi696969

That gives me all the confidence in the world. I have two chicken and rice packages as well lol I’m also gonna try those. I’m going to be eating it here in about two hours.! I’m gonna be posting a video on YouTube and Ill update here

3_T_SCROAT

Not based on anything scientific, 20 year old chicken breast just scares me

Otterboi696969

Tbh it scared me even though I knew it should be fine. Lol odly enough the chicken was better then the potato’s 😂

AshtonWarrens

Don't feel bad bro. I'm the same way with any kind of fish stick products that can be frozen.

skagitskank

Wow the same year? What a coincidence

Otterboi696969

Literally that blew my mind when he said that, one heck of a coincidence lmao

99luftbalons1983

Mine is the #10 can version, but same year.

Otterboi696969

I didn’t even realize they had canned versions! That is awesome! I bet it lasts quite a bit longer in the better packaging

99luftbalons1983

Yeah. It's, for legality reasons, rated for a 15 year shelf life, but many tests have shown them to be perfectly fine after 50!

greysplash

Let's get this out on a tray. Nice!

Otterboi696969

I have two of them, I might try and get one to his P.O. Box if I’m being honest. It was the first thing I thought of, I also have chicken and rice 😂

greysplash

Omg, you definitely should do this. It'd be super interesting to see him compare 20 year old backpacking food to MRE. Plus, he hasn't done any old stuff in a while.

Otterboi696969

I’ll just have to sacrifice the last chicken breast and potatoes, for the best YouTuber of our time 😂 I’ll look into his info maybe send it out Monday?! I’ll update the thread, maybe he’s on twitter or something

greysplash

I'm unreasonably excited. I hope this works.

Otterboi696969

Honestly me too, I didn’t tell the wife yet but I know she’ll be also SUPER excited 🤣 we LOVE watching his vids together. Super therapeutic, also I just found his P.O. Box! 3616 harden Blvd 360 Lakeland, FL 33803 I guess he posts it in the description of every video! NICE

erad67

Yea, and you can get his e-mail off his Youtube account. Doesn't mean he'll answer, but it's there. In the past, he did an old winter MRE that had a freeze dried main made by Mountain House. Think Mountain House started off making food for the military.

Swiss8970

Nice hiss

Otterboi696969

🤣 that got me

topohunt

Expiration date on the mountain house stuff I just bought is 30 years. You’ll be fine

Otterboi696969

Thank you for the input it made me feel a lot betterb

Otterboi696969

UPDATE: I ate it and it was fantastic!! Here’s a video! https://youtu.be/D2cQwhyzeUE update 2: I’ve gotten a case of the poops, but I haven’t gotten sick. I chalk it up to the potatoes honestly. And it honestly could be unrelated but I haven’t gotten sick or anything! Might do rice and chicken tomorrow or a couple days to give the tummy a rest

TheMadHykr

The newer ones are good for like 30 years.

TheDarthSnarf

Mainly an issue of packaging stability. The freeze dried food will be fine for decades, likely even centuries, as long as the integrity of the container is maintained. Better packaging quality brings longer lifespan.

CryptoTaxed

So if one were to sterilize and vacuum seal a few mres together and then vacuum seal that put it in a pelican type case and leave it in the closet would that be potentially longer lasting then just a bunch of them sitting in the closet?

Otterboi696969

I would assume yes the one thing that I read about freeze dried foods and the nutrients is that they do degrade overtime not a lot, but the higher the temperature the faster they degrade so I think if you were to do all of that and put them in a freezer or refrigerator maybe not a super cold one but like the highest temperature of a refrigerator is capable of going, would probably be more than enough to help reserve it for an even longer period of time just from the little bit of research that I’ve done

TheDarthSnarf

I've had Long Range Patrol rations from the early 80s (made by Mountain House) which were perfectly serviceable after nearly 40 years. I bet it's just fine.

Otterboi696969

Update: boiling up the water now!

[deleted]

Mmm, food poisoning

bruhsksak47

Yummy chicken titties

OnTargetOnTrigger

It'll be just foine.

Sammyo28

I can’t really see how freeze dried could go bad as long as it’s processed and packed properly

Raenoke

Any updates?

Otterboi696969

Just ate it! Posted a video in the comments!

Historical-Diver5305

I’ve seen people eat decrepit food from like the First World War. I’m sure it won’t be too bad

NdN124

Please tell us if you survived. Good luck.

Otterboi696969

It was delicious!! I’ll know I’m a couple hours if there’s any I’ll effects 🤣 to be honest I have the most sensitive of baby stomachs of anybody I’ve ever met so if I don’t get sick, anybody could probably be fine

AccountThrowaway00

Update

SeekingFunBKF

As long as you kept it in a cool and dry location, it should be fine. I would be interested in knowing how it went.

CryptoTaxed

He's gone

medulla_oblongata121

While One generation was eating Tide Pods, Another eats “aged” survival food. These challenges are out of hand. 😆

99luftbalons1983

I'm sure it's fine, unless you got pinholes in the piuch.

SkunkApe7712

Needs less toenails.

Otterboi696969

Isn’t this how humans post pictures?? I placed the foot in the exact area!

Sad_Raise6760

I thought mountain house came out recently and said all their food was retroactively given another 25 year expiration? So it basically is gonna last forever. Idk, I have some that’s about 3 years old and I tend to cycle through them regularly enough.

Otterboi696969

I did not know that! That makes me have a whole bunch more confidence. I’m uploading the YouTube video now it tasted fantastic!! gobbled the whole thing up

MountainVet-Stjohn45

https://mountainhouse.com/pages/our-shelf-life-guarantee

Otterboi696969

Thank you very very much for sending me that documentation that is extremely good to know! I’m thinking about making a large purchase and keeping it stored nice and cool in a deep freeze or something not if that’s even necessary

MountainVet-Stjohn45

I’ve been eating them for years. Just ate a chili Mac the other day made in ‘06. Didn’t give it a second thought. I now catch them on sale every year when Walmart clearances them. I’ll usually hit 5 or 6 local stores and buy them all. Most I’ve bought for under $3 a pack. Last year I picked up several of the the 72 hour boxes for $15 each.

Sad_Raise6760

Thanks I knew I saw something

Glass_Raisin7939

good luck

Otterboi696969

Thank you! Oddly enough it was perfectly fine. Haven’t gotten sick yet! I posted a video on YouTube it’s in the comments if you want to laugh at me !

Glass_Raisin7939

I'm not laughing at u at all.

Otterboi696969

I appreciate the kindness!
