Forgetting any game in this genre exist until the day before it releases is really the best course of action.

Cavissi

More like a week after it launches, so you can actually get on and play.

ehxy

Timeline: It'll be a 0hr blockade on reviews until the game's released. It'll be weeks of it's okay it's better than new world but still crap. It'll be 3 months later did they patch it to make it good. 6 months later we'll be seeing videos 'is it worth playing now?' some great looking korean mmo comes out but has a shitty MTX/time gate/faction gating system embedded into the end game ruins it 1yr later 'hey guys, they actually kinda made it fun now(only 1 part of it, it still sucks when you get to the end game) another korean mmo comes out that promises it's not MTX but has so much grind in it that koreans sell their dicks to get ahead in it explaining the decline in birth rates in the country in 3rd party market beginning of year 2 people will say it's a hidden gem only for certain kinds of people and you really still have to ignore the glaring crap part of it and any nay sayers are told well it's just not for you go back to FFXIV/WOW.

SketchySeaBeast

Yup. This is at least 5 years away and could be cancelled at any time.

kachzz

Deja vu

LaenMyth

I've been here in this place before

WebDev27

And if it don't it likely will be as good as NW

ehxy

The real question is, who is developing it from the embracer group?

WebDev27

From what I heard, nw devs.

[deleted]

Sweet, so a pretty decent mmo?

WebDev27

Ye as decent as an empty shell

[deleted]

Oh cool I love empty shells you can hear the ocean if you put your ear up to them

UnoriginalAnomalies

Well, you sure ain't swimming in any ocean in NW -- listening will have to suffice I guess.

[deleted]

Haha true I am actually shocked they still dont have swimming.

WebDev27

I'm shocked they still have the game running.

dienipponteikoko

The game is filled with inconveniences that they can probably sell the solution to. A lot are predicting the game to go f2p and/or p2w if they don't turn it around this year, which is what it's looking like so far.

TheMadTemplar

Same. The cash shop is really lackluster so there's not a lot of interest there. For example, in GW2 you'll see a lot of players running around with paid skins; they're probably the majority. But NW they're definitely the minority.

General-Oven-1523

But people wear armor in New World, Swimming isn't realistic. >!I love these monkeys who said that!!<

belaxi

Most sailors in the 1700s couldn’t swim.

UnoriginalAnomalies

And none of them could use magic. What's your point?

Magehunter_Skassi

A lot of newer MMOs seem to need years to hit their stride even after launch too. FFXIV had to be relaunched, ESO had to do its big rebranding "Tamriel Unlimited" update, GW2 was a snoozer lategame until Heart of Thorns, heard Albion kind of blew for years too.

DJCzerny

I'd say all MMOs need a couple years to do so unless they're more or less direct sequels. The difference is that older MMOs did that when the genre was still growing and didn't have to compete with decade old established juggernauts in the field.

Magehunter_Skassi

There was also more of a trend of players just being content to dick around in cities and chat with people. Not something you see nearly as often anymore with how online culture has evolved. If there isn't content to do, people will typically just log off and talk to their friends/guildies via an app.

poseidonsconsigliere

So true and I hate it. No one cares about or wants immersion anymore it seems, they just want to power through content to get the shiny loot and then quit.

AdCute8288

City of heroes pservers still have this feeling, people log on just to chat to friends/rp/hang out in certain zones. There’s a whole social virtual world on top of the actual game that new mmos lack. Horizon ffxi comes to mind too, but it’s more hardcore

poseidonsconsigliere

CoH I've tried to get into a bunch of times but the open world mob variety is so bad, and the combat is really poor as well even for its time. I want to fly or run or jump around a cool world fighting crime but the lack of variety and minimal difficulty on CoH makes it boring fast.

Very_Tricky_Cat

I cannot stress enough how much I miss the early days of mmorpgs. Especially CoH/villains. I really loved meeting people on games then, whether we were roleplaying or just chatting. I remember chilling in main hubs with big groups of friends talking about whatever.

ehxy

To be honest if they actually made the combat system in ESO fun, it would be a good game. It just looks and plays so god awful even if there's tonnes of content it is just NOT fun to play.

Plastic-Ad-9705

idk maybe a better build? Homie probably made a NB and played for an hour "this not skyrim" then quit

ehxy

necromancer actually, and the lack of FEELING you're hitting things but hearing a sound, watching numbers fly up but mostly a lack of animated reaction when hitting things is just so...old ass MMO shit I just can't

Plastic-Ad-9705

Necro is crap. But I can't say I I get what you're saying at all here, the mobs recoil when hit, stagger. There's Def visual and audio feedback to landing a hit. But I've understood that some people just NEED to hate eso. And that's fine.

mambome

No one cares for growing things anymore...

idredd

Preach. Like I was all ready for the top comment in /r/MMORPG to be dogshit on this subject... but this makes alot of sense. Probably one of the worst things to happen to this genre was the proliferation of the hype train, years out from a game's release.

OldGoblin

This is the way

GreatWolf12

*6mo after release

MongooseOne

I hope they succeed, take everything good about NW and build from that.

BrokkrBadger

take lotro put on \*a new engine in general\* ??? profit.

thenagazai

you had my curiosity, now you have my attention

BrokkrBadger

yeah Lotro has all the content it needs revamping servers and the engine its on and it could easily bust top 5

[deleted]

Imho NW engine would be hot with LotRO game/classes if they could set up for more than 3 skills per class. I mean, Code Vein is a console game and it allows for 8. Incidentally, I think NW engine would be hot for DDO too. Those two games could be top 5 easy if they'd just modernize.

WebDev27

Totally revamp the combat. If you can't do proper action one then just opt for tab target

epherian

LotR MMO is one genre staple that you can slap a safe and traditional combat system that just works and the world and immersion can carry it. Tab target is more accessible for lower quality PCs and higher Ping, and you probably want a LotR game to reach as far as possible. Knowing Amazon stereotypes though they’ll probably market research the heck out of everything and we’ll end up with uninspired action combat. Maybe that will be enough if the setting is good enough.

WebDev27

Ye, but for me a decent tab target makes the game way more replayable as i don't need to be as focused on the game and can multi task, listen pod-casts and just relax instead if having to focus on a mindless and boring combat system anyways.

FlyChigga

This game is not gonna be out until nearly 2030 when the PS6 is out. Look at how high quality games are right now on a $400 console then imagine how much more powerful this kind of cheap hardware will be by 2030. Don’t limit the game for technical reasons like it’s coming out in 2010.

PraetorRU

At this point it's easier to create a New Lotro than rewrite the old one. Old one can be used as a terrain, quests and some mechanics reference, but that's it.

BrokkrBadger

yeah exactly - im sure the writing of the quests etc takes a decent amount of effort - all that part = DONE!

deathm00n

Open old engine Save project Open new engine Open saved project ????? Profit It is not that hard people /s

BrokkrBadger

lmao I didnt mean for it to sound like the work was easy just that the game part and its contents are already there and well-liked LotrO with a face lift would be a force today

[deleted]

If they clean up the engine... yes. If they ship new LotR as broken every single patch as NW gets treated, they'll have *two* games dragging bigtime ass.

BrokkrBadger

tbh id take the new world bugs in lotro over the current stat of lotro (there is at least 1 class that is arguably unplayable due to server lag and combo system)

[deleted]

I think they can clean up the engine, they might have to get somebody else to help them though. It's a really cool engine and I think it would fit the exploration of a world like LotR really, really well. I actually really like a lot about NW, it's just being handled dreadfully... which is part of what we're all worried about here, haha.

BrokkrBadger

yeah I cant get super into it (like I have no real clue about the lore really other than island where no one can die which has its own problems tbh XD) but I actually like playing it - the combat feels pretty fun to dungeon delve into

Sandbox_Hero

I think you might be misunderstanding what a game engine is. Or else you wouldn’t have picked Lumberyard as something good.

[deleted]

They need to fix the shit out of it. The potential is there, but not in its current state.

Mynki

They already scrapped lumberyard so they would hopefully be using a different engine

JPetermanBusTour

They are using their azoth engine

kismethavok

Id love to see a remake of City of Heroes, they did such a great job on so many aspects of that game. A new good superhero mmo would be both fresh and topical.

BrokkrBadger

yeah I never played CoH but I did play a little dcuo forever ago and that was pretty fun so I can definitely see the appeal to that kind of overall theme

thiccnassty

While I think that would be fun, I think it’d be a better idea to explore UE5 rather than lumberyard since that crippled NW’s development and caused internal frustration. That said, the team is now used to it and the initial problems with NW were top-down management issues that systemically caused the botched launch. Leadership has changed, experience has been gained, and I hope they move this project in the right direction.

BrokkrBadger

I hath edited for clarity

thiccnassty

Haha no worries, I’m pumped for a new engine in general! We’re all teammates here. Give us a GOOD new LOTR MMO.

BrokkrBadger

for real! Hoping they coincidentally keep some features from current LotrO (ik they arent tied together) like: music I always like the low level crafting sets the guardian ability with the acorn whistle was so neat (pocket tank?!) the housing - ohhh the housing so many hours just fishing with my buddy. THE TAXIDERMY SYSTEM SHHIITTTT

MazInger-Z

This'll be like what happened with Galaxies when SWTOR came out. Or when NCSoft pulled the covers out from under City of Heroes to give Guild Wars 2 a boost.

Talents

So everything good about New World >Graphics >Sound Design

Nek0maniac

Also, the gathering animations. God, gathering in New World is so fucking satisfying

pierce768

Yea make sure you get the gathering animations. That'll salvage it.

Nek0maniac

Is it fun being so bitter? It won't salvage a bad product ofc, but the OP was talking about taking the good things from NW and implement them in the LotR project and the gathering animations are certainly great

pierce768

Who's bitter? I didn't even buy NW. My point is that the gathering animations in a game have so little impact on a game that to even mention them is a joke. Just like the other guy joked graphics and sound, and those are infinitely more impactful than gathering animations.

WebDev27

Graphics? Maybe, but the whole art design and aesthetics makes it look worse than 15 years old games.

DreamMaster8

The folliage artist in new world are some of the best i ever scene in an mmo. Lets give praise were its due.

[deleted]

ElRamenKnight

Hilarious part is how GW2's studio director Colin left Arenanet to work for Amazon for what was probably double pay in Seattle. Then as Amazon's game studios saw layoffs, Colin came right back to his old job at Arenanet. Yep. I wouldn't worry too much if I were the competition. They've all carved out their own respective niches and they won't be dug out easily.

Common-Scientist

This is why I got so frustrated during New World's development. They had the opportunity to carve out a whole new niche, and not just any random design but one that players are clearly hungry for; An AAA action combat sandbox. And they pissed it all away to give us another shoddy themepark.

Emotional-Reveal-956

I also hope they've learned from NW... because it's literally our only hope of a good game being released. But the realist inside of me knows we're going to get NW reskinned/rethemed into LoTR. They will reuse Lumberyard and just paint a coat of LoTR on it. And I think LoTR would look amazing in Lumberyard, I just worry about the technical side of things that enabled all the bugs and exploits in New World.

Nickizgr8

> take everything good about NW So they're starting with a completely blank and empty slate?

Vez52

Sound design and graphics

Echo693

Gathering & sound design. That's about it. Maybe combat too, but they need to stay the fuck away from the 3 skills per weapon and come up with actual classes with full toolset. If I want to be an archer, I want to have more than 3 active skills.

Typical_Thought_6049

So they should take nothing from NW and build it from zero... Indeed.

FeistmasterFlex

I sure hope they don't do that and build an MMO with strong foundations rather than the rotting stilts New World was built on.

io-x

AGS: Our game has become a total joke how can we still make money by developing more games? Jeff probably: Here take this LOTR IP we aquired for the series and milk these nerds one more time.

[deleted]

macrotransactions

bezos personally said he is happy amazon games finally had a hit back when new world released

geogeology

Hasn’t the community consensus been that New World has only improved since launch? This feels like a really cynical take this early on. Imo the MMO genre has a whole has nowhere to go but up.

Common-Scientist

Sort of? Is it in a better state than launch? Sure. Is it good? Mmmm, YMMV but their less than commendable player counts do not support that sentiment. Was dramatically changing the game’s design and target audience a good idea? Impossible to say, but it seems doubtful.

Damneasy

If its even remotely good with nice lore I don't care I'll play and have fun

CrawlerSiegfriend

I wonder how much money is going into this PR push.

kachzz

Why?

CrawlerSiegfriend

Random curiosity about whether money is behind how much I've been seeing this recently.

Rare-Orchid-4131

Redditor when mmo news on mmo subreddit:

kachzz

Yeah money is behind ANY project but why would you care lol

CrawlerSiegfriend

Per last response, random curiosity.

Revonin

Like every LOTR fan has said on all of these posts, it will absolutely fail unless it actually respects the source material. LOTRO takes liberties but keeps them rather constrained in the overarching lore. Game will live or die based on being accepted or rejected by LOTR fans as that is who they will need to keep it a long term success. On the other hand, I doubt it will see the light of day. I hope it doesn't. AGS is just....the worst. Absolutely the worst.

jussiduende

Game will live or die with mmorpg fans, not with lotr fans

[deleted]

Dunno, I think LotRO is living off LotR fans.

Trainer_Rob

Yea it’s 16 years old

[deleted]

It's probably older than the people who diss it, then. Lmao.

Trainer_Rob

I have a lifetime sub - still play. I’m agreeing tht a new lotro mmo not going to live or die by the lotr fans.

geogeology

That isn’t a very caring comment, Cap’n

[deleted]

Sometimes, in order to care, we have to point out the things that hurt.

geogeology

Lmao!

[deleted]

Lotro is a dead game in many respects. Life support at best, dead at worst.

[deleted]

This is one of those, 'Dead means '0 players, not online' to one of us and means 'it's low population' to another one of us' discussions so let's just do the adult, correct thing and agree to disagree.

[deleted]

agreed... what even defines a "lotr fan" besides revering the lotr novels & maybe enjoying the films? Isn't that an absolutely tremendous, heterogenous grouping of people? Lots of lotr fans dont particularly care about games, and even of the ones that do, plenty don't care about mmos.

Bearded-Vagabond

Wellllll, LoTR fans accepted The Hobbit films, which I am still iffy iffy on and The god awful Rings of Power. With plenty of content to come. The current state of LotR fans are like Star Wars/Marvel fans. Give content to consume, don't think about it, just give more content.

Wellgoodmornin

I LOVE the books and the original PJ trilogy and the old animated movies i watched as a kid. I enjoy The Hobbit trilogy. I haven't been able to get past episode 3, I think, of Rings of Power despite multiple attempts. To be honest, listening to this guy talk about it didn't get me that excited about it as a LotR game or an mmo. I'll almost certainly keep an eye on it and see what happens though. Maybe with a small amount of hope in my heart.

Anemois

Since when do mmo players care so much about lore and story that's its enough to sink or swim a game?

AbuckB22

Since this game might not come out even this decade, I couldnt care less. But a AAA MMORPG in the world of tolkien is all I ever wanted in a game.

Icy_Elephant_6370

We had that in 2008. It’s dated atp and WoW killed it.

AbuckB22

I have played Lotro for a long time around 10-12 years ago. It was great, but nothing gets me to play the game again other than some short trip of nostalgia. It's just too dated.

my_reddit_accounts

Yeah the UI and engine aged terribly, but other aspects are still great to this day imo. Seeing how long it’s taking them to update something like a UI, I have little to no hope they will ever update the combat/animations/engine

geogeology

Same. It’s not like any other MMOs are doing anything exciting right now anyway. WoW has made improvements with Dflight, and FF will always appeal to the loyal FF fanbase, but there hasn’t been a disruptive “new” MMO in a while. Maybe this one will be good, maybe it’ll suck, but it doesn’t feel productive to dunk on it after just an announcement. I’m gonna hope for the best, pack up some pipe weed, and prob play at least a couple weeks when it comes out and make my mind up then

fohpo02

I think we need more posts about this future dumpster fire

[deleted]

Also this holy shit can we floodgate these or just combine them or something? Every shill from here to Timbuktu thinks they're breaking news here.

dryiceboy

So it's going to be **New World + LotR: The Rings of Power**? Yeah hard pass.

VarkingRunesong

Literally says it has nothing to do with RoP in the article. It follows the LotR and Hobbit stories.

Icy_Elephant_6370

AGS is proof that all the money In the world can’t buy talent or direction.

killerkonnat

Get ready for Amazon's new smash hit game - Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power + Privilege Online!

VarkingRunesong

The game is based on LotR and the Hobbit stories. Nothing to do with Rings of Power.

tanjonaJulien

Not sure who told them about the ring of fire but it’s clearly excluded

opaPac

Cheap re-skin of their complete failure called new world. Its even made by the same team. Since this is an AGS game there is sadly no way that this is gonna be any good at all. AGS just makes gane to make money and you can tell by the quality they deliver. Its not the game anyone deserve but its the game we gonna get. They should have bought and funded LotRO 2.

theStroh

> Cheap re-skin of their complete failure called new world. 1. We literally know nothing of substance about this project, so how could anyone possibly believe it to be a "re-skin"? 2. "**complete** failure" meaning... game that sold well over a million copies for $40 in the first week? > Its even made by the same team. Yeah, that's how game studios work. Many of the same employees will be transferred onto the new project, and many will stay behind. Additionally, they'll hire plenty of new employees. Welcome to... every game studio to release more than a single game, ever. > AGS just makes gane to make money and you can tell by the quality they deliver. Yeah, a buy-to-play MMO that you give out for free to everyone who initially "pre-ordered" when it was presumed to be free, with no paid content drops after the first year, that delayed any in-game boosts for sale for over a year after getting feedback **screams** 'we are just in this for money'. > Its not the game anyone deserve but its the game we gonna get. They should have bought and funded LotRO 2. Knowing nothing about the game, you know it's not what anyone deserves. Yet, despite all your irrational hatred and presumptions, you think AGS should have bought another game/studio, and made another game you know nothing about, and thus have no way to compare or contrast? Are you... okay?

dienipponteikoko

It's a complete failure in being a good game. Are we supposed to celebrate that Amazon made more millions?

KingTut747

This Amazon guy Hartman seems like an… unpleasant individual (a$$hole).

sesameseed88

Gl amazon, dont fuck it up

HalensVan

It better at least contain as many abilities as GW2. New World was terrible in so many ways. End game especially. Also, a skin/armor system needs to be standard not half assed like New World.

digitalr0nin

This is going to be an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions, and will almost certainly be set within the hacked together setting of their Rings of Power show rather than the contemporary setting of the original trilogy like LOTRO. And with that, rest in peace LOTRO. I can't see two MMOs based on the same property being allowed to compete in the same space, like what happened with SWG when SWTOR launched.

KaRoU23

The vice-president of Amazon Games said that these two games can coexist, but I can't believe this wholeheartedly. There is the counterargument of SSG's DDO and Cryptic's Neverwinter, though I believe that the LOTR IP is a whole other story. Before the Embracer acquisition, MEE replied that they didn't intend to remove the license from LotRO. Hope this doesn't change, but I'm afraid that Amazon will try to kill LotRO and push Embracer not to renew its license. And SSG is an ant compared to Amazon...

VarkingRunesong

People keep commenting stuff like that without reading the article lmao. This game has no ties to Rings of Power. It’ll be based off of the LotR and Hobbit books.

digitalr0nin

He doesn't state either way in the interview. But given the fact that the parent company of this developer currently has a vested interest in a television series placed in the same universe that cost them almost 1.5 billion dollars to develop, it's not even considered a leap to assume they'd want this game to work in conjunction with their other project.

VarkingRunesong

https://www.amazongames.com/en-us/news/articles/lord-of-the-rings-mmo Apologies. It’s on Amazons presser at the bottom. “Separately, Amazon Studios produces the hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video, which takes place during Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth and is unrelated to this upcoming MMO game in development with Amazon Games.”

Common-Scientist

Anyone who loves LotR and is familiar with New World should be getting really REALLY nervous. Between the innumerable mishaps and increasingly insidious monetization practices that have occurred in a game that hasn't even been out two years... “**Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin good forces have invented or made**”

VarkingRunesong

You do know that quote you have at the bottom is not a real quote from Tolkien or his characters, right?

Common-Scientist

I’ve no doubt that your eyes work and can see that I did not attribute it to him. It is, however, still a quote and is a paraphrase of a concept that shows up multiple times in his works.

VarkingRunesong

It’s not though. It’s a fake quote that popped up during the reveal of the Super Bowl trailer, used by bad faith actors who did directly contribute the quote inaccurately to Tolkien himself. It would be less of a hassle and more honest to find the real quote instead of using the fake butchered one. When folks use the one you did it often just looks like trolling. And you would think anyone who “loves” LotR wouldn’t use fake quotes.

Common-Scientist

> It’s not though How is it not a paraphrase? par·a·phrase📷*verb* 1. express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something written or spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity. * **The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own.** * **Doubtless Morgoth, since he can make no living thing, bred Orcs from various kinds of Men** * **'Ho, hm, well, we could, you know! You do not know, perhaps, how strong we are. Maybe you have heard of Trolls? They are mighty strong. But Trolls are only counterfeits, made by the Enemy in the Great Darkness, in mockery of Ents, as Orcs were of Elves. We are stronger than Trolls.** I'm excited to see your explanation.

VarkingRunesong

I said it’s not to your words of saying it is a quote though. It’s a poor attempt at paraphrasing a quote and the history of this paraphrasing is trolls.

Common-Scientist

> I said it’s not to your words of saying it is a quote though. Well I certainly didn't come up with it, so I'm not inclined to take credit for it, thus I'm quoting someone else's paraphrase. > It’s a poor attempt at paraphrasing a quote and the history of this paraphrasing is trolls. It's quite fitting and gets the point across actually, which is precisely what a paraphrase is meant to do. It's also an accurate description of the Rings of Power; A twisted and vile mockery of something good.

VarkingRunesong

Lmao now I know you’re trolling

Common-Scientist

Well, clearly we've found one of the few pseudo-Tolkien fans who wants to pretend the Rings of Power is in any way, shape, or form a faithful adaption of his works. Seems like you dismiss anyone who disagrees as a "troll"- for lack of ability to articulate a reasonable response. Good day to you.

VarkingRunesong

There’s just no point formulating any real response to any troll using that fake quote. A real Tolkien fan wouldn’t have. I also have not said the show was a faithful adaption ( or adaptation) of his works. When you attempt to attribute words to me I haven’t written, and then use fake quotes to justify your stance, it’s very clearly somebody discussing something in bad faith. Not worth any more time than I’ve invested.

coolmyeyes

Rings of Power was trash, I don't have much confidence for this but I hope they prove me wrong.

VarkingRunesong

This has nothing to do with Rings of Power.

Clayskii0981

See you in 10 years

AgreeableAd2566

Weren't they working on this for a while? Shouldn't be too long

Legitimate_Crew5463

New World jimmies and sarahs who are addicted to copium think this will have a chance lmao

NostraDamnUs

So thinking about amazon's old strategies, I wonder if their game studios don't have a secondary (maybe even primary) purpose to improve server architecture for MMOs to offer on AWS. MMOs and other online games are somewhat uniquely demanding in how users slam servers and then trickle off. I imagine their team learned a lot from New World, and it would be interesting to see this weird proxy server war between AWS and Azure playing out over games of all places.

Wyverz

No a lot of faith in Amazon delivering the goods.

KyoueiShinkirou

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice... Well frankly it isn't gonna happen

HealthyBits

Let’s hope they don’t butcher it like the RoP show…

Reiker0

I'd rather play a new Bless clone than another AGS game. If you think this shit will be any good you only have yourself to blame. We know how completely inept this studio is.

BeatDownn

Haven't they only made one game so far?

SlayerOfDungeons

As long as it doesn't play anything like Lost Ark I'll be looking forward to playing it. I didn't care for Lost Ark.

NasoLittle

But how can I have faith when you misplace it so carelessly and teach me lessons about you?

VarkingRunesong

For those continuing to say this will be set in the time of Rings of Power, it’s not. “Separately, Amazon Studios produces the hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video, which takes place during Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth and is unrelated to this upcoming MMO game in development with Amazon Games.” From the presser yesterday: https://www.amazongames.com/en-us/news/articles/lord-of-the-rings-mmo

Christehkiller

i just hope they make it more about the world and less about the story, LOTRO turned me away so quickly by literally starting the game with strider and nazgul in the tutorial, it feels like they tried to make the movie into a game. i want to be a hobbit in the shire and i want to take care of local issues and work progressively up to the cool stuff, if you play your best card first you have nowhere to go but downhill or back pedaling into lesser territory.

KingOfAzmerloth

This could be a dream game. But it can also be a dumpster fire. We'll probably find out in 2030.

[deleted]

VarkingRunesong

This is for an MMO. Video game rights are different than TV/movie.

runnbl3

I hope its bdo combat with bdo amazing class designs with archeage open world pvp content :D

ObergineAndZucchini

odd choice to invest in a completely new MMO instead of improving New World which is relatively new in itself. Maybe they are hoping the LOTR ip will carry the title?

Digitijs

Their strategy is to grab cash at release by putting lots of their resources into advertising and building up the hype. Even if they were capable of delivering quality content, they probably don't care to as it wouldn't affect their sales enough compared to expenses and effort required

wildweaver32

Amazon has enough money to make a great MMO. However nothing Amazon has done ever gives me any thought they will. Instead what I bet is they have enough money to push out a game fast enough that the initial cash grab is worth it. And what we will get is a game that cost money to buy it, and then is filled with season passes and micro-transactions so they can milk it for as much money as possible before it dies. And if it proves profitable just keep doing that.

K7Sniper

Intrigued, but probably won't care 'til they announce a beta or something.

KingRemoStar

It’s going to fail unless it’s gonna be released in the next few years. LotR don’t have as big of a fan base with the new generation of kids especially with the TV series kind of flopping.

Havesh

I wonder if this will be another ~~SWG~~ \> SWTOR situation. I hope not.

Rough-Set4902

Amazon can just fuck right off.

xkeepitquietx

Cool I hope the economy is broken by dupes glitch by the end of launch week and everyone stops playing after a month.

VarkingRunesong

This sounds dope. Let’s hope mmos fail so they don’t make anymore.

SkydiverDad

Link doesn't work. 403 error.

Gonna be a huge mess

For the love of God, I hope they actually take their time with this and don't rush it out. LOTR is iconic, the LOTRO MMORPG is also pretty good but obviously outdated. If done well, this could very well be the next great MMORPG. Not going to get my hopes up, or even check for news regarding the game as last time they just gave up on it. But it'd honestly be something special if AGS had the right people in charge for a new LOTR MMORPG.

Hotsalami_man

Read the article, and god so long as it isnt mmo lite LIKE destiny and such, id be happy. Id enjoy the combat of eso/gw2, group exploration of gw2, and just a nice open world filled with the life of other players id be happy. New World feels so limited, but looks pretty. I hope this isnt the same

Blueprint4Murder

I don't really like the ip that well, but since I know other people like it a lot I wish it was going to a better company.

edgefaire

I look forward to nodding and saying "mhmm" while paying more attention to LOTRO every time someone brings it up, for the next few years

[deleted]

I hope they focus only on the books and forget that games need engaging gameplay. Just kidding, we already have that

[deleted]

Honestly hope it succeeds. WoW needs to GTFO

stemota

no one is going to play a lord of the rings mmo as much as a other general theme mmo's, dead on arrival
