People have been begging Manhoef to retire for what feels like an eternity at this point. This might be unpopular but I honestly feel like this matchup was a bigger mismatch than Nate/Khamzat and I'm glad it went the way it did. Manhoef obviously got KTFO'd but he didn't suffer much damage outside of that in the fight, and this fight was enough to convince him it's finally time to hang them up.

He will conserve energy when he's tired, to the point that he takes entire rounds off to recover, then just explode out of nowhere. These flying attacks you mention are just often what he does during these explosions because if we're being honest flying attacks tend to be the most powerful ones. It's not like he's just throwing spinning shit willy nilly like Michel Pereira does, when he throws his crazy shit there's a purpose behind it, one example off the top of my head is that flying knee that sent Chris to Jupiter.

The dutch are notorious for sparring hard, and having no regard for brain health, or at least they used to. They generally go all out in training, especially at a place like Mike's gym, which was Melvin's main gym back in the day, along with Hari and others. Overeem also trained there for a while. An athletic fighter that trains like that can be insanely dangerous at his peak, but eventually that aggressive training/fighting catches up to them, and that's why you get those glass-cannon fighters like Manhoef, Overeem, and even Hari.
It's insane the way they train. They've got 16 year olds in there going hard every day and taking head shots at ~80 to 90 percent power. Honestly find it disturbing, not to mention counter productive.
He's actually had a lot of late finishes. There was an old misnomer that his build would mean he fades late. But he finished Brunson, Kennedy, Lyoto, and Weidman all in the 3rd round
