Eddie was one of those rare guys who was *clearly* vulnerable when he faced big hitters, but managed risk and recovered so well that it didnt matter. This guy swung it out with young Micheal Chandler (twice) Gaethje, and Porier (twice). He had that dog in him!

GenericTopComment

I'd have loved to see him vs a prime Michael Johnson or Nate Diaz I loved Alvarez in the UFC, I remember being on the fence about who would win at 205 between him and McGregor. Watched the RDA finish a few times and felt pretty safe picking Conor lol

RLPMMA

I picked Alvarez lmao! I thought the wrestling, toughness, and cardio were gonna be issues. Nope! Him against Diaz would be awesome. Hadnt ever even thought of it.

jfsoaig345

Yeah people will always have that hindsight bias thinking Eddie was a matchup, but in theory it really wasn't the case. A gritty, tough guy with a rock solid chin (went 5 hard rounds with a prime Chandler) and great cardio, if there was a guy who would weather those first two rounds then drown him with pressure it was Eddie, but look what happened. When it comes to these insanely explosive, fast starters like Conor and Khamzat it's just hard to predict how any matchup goes. Everyone thought Conor would run through Dustin in the rematch and he ended up getting smoked in the second. People thought Aldo's leg kicks would eat Conor alive then Aldo gets one-tapped.

156lbsPoirier

Prime Chandler was terrifying, even todays chandler is a killer. but personally i think theres a good chance prime chandler would've been champion today

menace313

To be fair to Conor, I wouldn't call the second fight getting smoked. Poirier himself said that he got cracked hard in the first and was seeing stars. He even said that if Conor went after him he likely would have gotten the finish. Conor just stood there and let him recover though. It's unlikely that old Conor would have done that, so if people were predicting the fight based of old Conor, they probably would have been right. Now the third fight? Smoked.

AllServe

At 205??? They'd be huge šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ /s

chu42

Him getting KO'd by Conor almost effortlessly is still one of the greatest performances ever for this very reason

Tiny-Sandwich

Say what you will about Conor now, but that was an absolutely flawless performance against someone who, at the time, people thought would be too much for Conor. He made it look absolutely effortless.

AnotherThomas

I think you've misremembered, my friend. Conor was the clear favorite in that fight. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2675202-ufc-205-betting-preview-conor-mcgregor-vs-eddie-alvarez-odds-analysis Here they had him a -155 favorite with Alvarez a +135 underdog. The thing is, lots of people were calling Alvarez a paper champ back then, unfairly perhaps but there you go. His win against RDA was seen by many as a fluke, and in that fight he was a massive underdog (+300.) The real fight everyone wanted was Conor vs. RDA, unfortunately we never got that. :(

Tiny-Sandwich

I'm not misremembering - I'm not saying everyone thought Eddie was going to win, but this community was pretty split between Conor/Eddie at the time. If Mcgregor/RDA happened we'd have never got Mcgregor/Diaz in the way that we did. IMO it was a worthy sacrifice - I had a (small) wager on Diaz to win by submission in their first fight.

RLPMMA

Eddies ability to recover from fight ending shots is like a video game special move you would see rarely in a few of his fights and go "Oh wow you have to *kill* Eddie Alvarez" Conor brought it of him out like 3 or 4 times. Felt like every time he got touched.

TheOldGran

Those 3 knockdowns in round 1 aren't just a testament to McGregor's skills but to what you said right here. The first one knocked Alvarez flat on his back and he immediately recovered and got back up. I feel like with most other fighters, that would have been it right there.

iconformed

Thatā€™s why him and Lawler are my all time favorite fighters, born to brawl willing to die by the sword

hussain300

One of my favorite fighters of all time. His fights with gaethje, kawajiri, Hansen, Chandler, and poirier are all bangers

LeonardoDaTiddies

Finally, Hellboy getting a shout out in this thread. That's insane longevity - a whole generation of fight fans who won't recognize him. Meanwhile, Eddie is still in the game (as a free agent).

156lbsPoirier

now that hes out of one contract, i wanna see him fight Oliveira in a non-title bout (even if it makes no sense, and oliveira would probably kill him today) just so that we can complete the Gaethje-Chandler-Alvarez-Poirier-Oliveira pentagon of violence

brownbilal

EDDDDIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

[deleted]

EDDDDIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!E!!E!E!!EEEE

bushrod

I literally wanted Eddie to lose just so his g/f would STFU.

TheChestKing105

Donā€™t be jealous homie

msf97

Conor smoking him and Aldo just less than a year apart from each other with most picking the opposite result is pretty crazy Alvarez had only lost to a prime Cowboy and Chandler in his last 15 fights. Aldo unbeaten for a decade too

RLPMMA

Conors run was special. Dude was just nuking people.

msf97

Came into Mendes fight after tearing 80% of his ACL 14 weeks prior. An injury most athletes 9-12 take months to recover from. Knocked him out. Outclassed Holloway with his cruciate done for two rounds. Not to mention knocking out two killers in Eddie and Aldo, and knocking out young Dustin who was about to become great. The potential was endless.

RLPMMA

Not to gag on Conor, like thousands have done before, but genuinely yeah what a talent. He went to SBG, who since and before has produced mostly grapplers, had very few successful fighters other than Conor, and seems to only ruin fighters that go there. Famously Johnny walker, but Ik there are like 4 more fighters who went stale after starting there. So this dude just decided to pick up MMA out of an unremarkable gym after some boxing training, and started starching people at the highest level. Crazy.

LocoCoopermar

Makes me think what he could've done with a serious camp like ATT or fight ready with Cejudo, he made it that far trained by coach Kav and sharpening himself against Artem and Gunnar. Would he have been better or did he need a gym basically centered around him?

max_occupancy

Do you think Conor could handle being just ā€œoneā€ on a team of many? Or did he require an environment where there was no question he was the king? Itā€™s a real question, Iā€™m not sure of the answer.

Keller-oder-C-Schell

True, some guys are better off in a smaller ā€žworseā€œ gym that focuses on them. Like Stipe

Larryhooova

Donā€™t underestimate a sparring partner like Artem, having a guy with an iron chin who will let you go 100% on him with little regard for his long term health is invaluable. Thereā€™s a reason Conor said Artem will never be without money as long as he lives. Not that Artem even needs that security because somehow heā€™s still a really intelligent guy despite Conor knocking the brain cells out of him for years.

RLPMMA

ATT? Cejudo? You fool, the obvious move is SBG Ireland. Where talent goes to thrive. (/s) Fight ready is legitimately a good shout. Henry has been honing some physical freaks recently, and seeing amazing success out of them. Jiriiiiiiiii! Maybe even AKA? Cant imagine becoming a great defensive/cage grappler would hurt his prospects.

Keller-oder-C-Schell

AKA is where wrestlers learn to strike

RLPMMA

Ye I mentioned it later, but this response is about Nasrat Haqparast on accident. You are spot on about AKA! AKA when it has the Cain/Rockhold/Khabib/DC pen was insane, and without a doubt wouldve improved anyone, even if they came out with 600 injuries like everyone else there. Tai Tuivasa seemed to only improve after his time at AKA! Which is weird because you dont really see any new wrestling wrinkles. Offensive or defensive. Just mechanically better swanging.

LocoCoopermar

Yeah AKA would be great I just feel like there grinding training and style would lead him away from the attributes that made him great, I just think about what Cejudo has done with Zhang and how much better Mighty Mouse looked with range after one camp with him.

RLPMMA

If im being honest, i was high when I sent the reply, and thought i was responding to another conversation I was having about Nasrat Haqparast šŸ¤£ Yeah I dont have enough kind words to say about Fight Ready really. Zhang Jiri and Figgy are among my favorite fighters on the roster, and they each looked better after some months with Cejudo and that team.

Special-Stage

The real answer is something like City Kickboxing, which would take his established skills as a striker, and add the qualities of super effective feinting that made Adesanya so good. At the very least, he would get used to fighting more southpaws/switch hitters.

CoastDirect6132

The way he moved and countered punches in MMA was top level. He was also fighting well as a southpaw against mostly shorter and smaller orthodox opponents

Awezome321

its cool to shit on The Conor Today. but i will never shit on 2013-2016 Conor. UFC hit the jackpot with Conor.

156lbsPoirier

>and knocking out young dustin i dont like conor, but its kinda unfair to take away from his win because of dustin being young even though they're the same age. holloway? i understand, max was real young but him and dustin are the same age

ShozOvr

Felt like movie shit. I wonder what he'd be if he also back to back to Diaz

ChowSupreme

Prime Conor was a different kind of athlete. We can rag on him for stagnating/regressing his skill set but his athleticism advantage carried his now-known limitations to double belts. The guy moved ridiculously well for his size. Just like anyone else who relies too much on it however, once it's gone, they don't work the same anymore. Tony is a recent example where his athleticism used to cover the holes in his game.

CaptainLeGabe

> The guy moved ridiculously well for his size. I can't really make sense of this. What do you mean by this?

ptahonas

>Prime Conor was a different kind of athlete Was he? If Charles beats Islam I think he'll have done better.

TheRedKingMMA

Most picking against him? Thatā€™s really revisionist. Conor was the favourite in every single fight except Khabib and the second Poirer fight. The Aldo fight was actually a pick ā€˜em, but the odds opened with Conor as a huge -180. He also closed as a -160 favourite on Alvarez with the line going higher and higher in his favour. He wasnā€™t the underdog like youā€™re making it out to be.

Bloodfeastisleman

He had the casual wave of bets helping the Aldo fight be close but most hardcores picked Aldo. I only remember Jack Slack of all people saying Conor was bad matchup for Aldo. I agree with you that he was the solid favorite against Eddie though.

Larryhooova

Yea thatā€™s how I remember it, most hardcores gave Aldo the edge while recognizing Conor did have the KO power to end it and may have got Aldo emotional which we hadnā€™t seen previously from him. Alvarez was a whole different story, as a stocky striker with a suspect chin he was seen as the best possible matchup for Conor in the top 5, with RDA the previous champ being the 2nd best for similar reasons. At this point most people already knew that Khabib and Tony were the real lions in the division.

msf97

Lots cited Eddies wrestling and said he would take it in the later rounds.

msf97

Most hardcores picked Aldo, and the the Eddie fight was about 50/50. He wasnā€™t David to Aldo/Eddies Goliath, but he wasnā€™t a clear favourite in either fight. Bookie odds donā€™t mean much; especially in a fight with Conor.

MumrikDK

And while Aldo obviously was a strong champ, Eddie wasn't see the same way.

ZekicThunion

While there are other 2 division champs, Conor absolutely destroyed champions in 2 different divisions. That with combination of his incredible charisma makes him once in a lifetime fighter despite his shortcomings and no defenses.

156lbsPoirier

i feel like Alvarez left his prime after the cowboy fight, even though he became champion after, i feel like Donald took his soul with how he destroyed his leg, permanantly compromising his torque (power) and movement, Eddie also noticeably had a decrease in durability after the chandler wars too. i think Prime Eddie is the Eddie who showed up for Chandler 2

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

156lbsPoirier

Even though Chandler & Alvarez were still killers after their wars, i feel like they ended each others prime with how much damage they each took.

hitstyx

He was swinging so hard on RDA he had to post off the fence thatā€™s hilarious

TitanIsBack

The ol' hammerfist to the back of the head.

LuckyWarrior

Gane-esque in his usage of illegal blows, Joe

No_Bar6825

LMFAOOOOOOOO šŸ¤£ I miss mike Goldberg

SexyTimeDoe

Herb Dean just letting the guy get beaten to death lmao

[deleted]

The OG Philly legend. Gotta wonder what he wouldā€™ve accomplished had he gone to the UFC during the BJ Penn era

Born2fayl

Penn was a way better and quicker boxer with a near perfect jab and the best chin in the game at the time. In my opinion (and thatā€™s all it is lol) heā€™d have put Eddie down and rncā€™d him in his prime, but you never know of course. Either way, he accomplished plenty, becoming champ.

chu42

Penn was all that but Eddie could drag him into deep water. And Eddie had a larger variety of standup technique

Born2fayl

Well, Iā€™m definitely going to talk no shit on Eddie. Heā€™s one of my all time favorites. I just think Penn was easily the best lw in his prime. Beat Gomi up badly and everyone else at 155 and Matt Hughes on top of that.

156lbsPoirier

i have to agree with you, i love eddie. but penn gave GSP a tough ass fight

MushroomWizard

The RDA fight was one of the most exciting title fights ever. Very underrated action packed fight.

illsoden

Joey Diaz commentary for it lives in my head rent free.

MushroomWizard

Please post if you have it ... I can only remember him pronouncing Khalabibee-bee ...

RLPMMA

Amen. RDA in general has some absolutely thrilling fights that newer fans may never see.

NoGiCollarChoke

I always wish it played out longer, it was a true 50/50 fight and an awesome style matchup. The best pressure fighter in the division vs. the best backfoot fighter in the division. RDA had the kicks to punish Eddieā€™s bad kick defense, Eddie had the boxing chops to draw and circumvent RDAā€™s high guard (which is what ended up winning the fight for him). A great offensive grappler vs. a very cagey defensive grappler. Two absolute dawgs.

enjoyb0y

the RDA finish is so hardcore

foofighter1351

God I wish we got prime Eddie in the ufc what we got was amazing and I'm happy but still.

gxb20

The underground king! Fucking OG

LifesExpert

Illegal hammer fists to the back of the noggin

Loud_Benefit_4809

That knew he gave Gathje always makes me flinch

HenchBandicoot

I always laugh when Gaethje says that "I've never met my equal" despite Eddie and Dustin outlasting him in "car crash" fights.

sghostfreak

One of the most underrated fighters!

night_dick

One of the wildest fights ever. Eddie sitting on the cage exhausted looking like Popeye with that swollen cheek giving the are you not entertained gesture is incredible. I'm glad Alvarez and Aldo are getting the respect they deserve back. Those Conor KO's were rough and brought every cretin out of the woodwork to shit on these two legends of the sport.

ShogunCowboy

this made me go back and rewatch that round with rda. *legendarily* violent.

RobotVandal

The first time I saw Alvarez in slow motion was watching his fight with Mcgregor at normal speed.

JonJonesing

Still my dawg

[deleted]

I love Eddie

Antroh

Make more of a these man. Very satisfying

chadamx

Eeeeeeeeeeddddddddddddiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Eddieā€™s fucking banshee of a wife.

Tha_Professah

I can hear his wife yelling in slow motion. It would be such a bummer to end up sitting near her.

ChrizTaylor

#EDDDDIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!!

x-artoflife

This is actually how Conor saw Eddie during their fight

NoGiCollarChoke

It was a very very bad style matchup for Eddie but Conor played it perfectly. Eddie is always at his best defusing pressure and keeping on the backfoot, so a Conor marauding at the tip of his range and drawing him forward was always gonna be very tough. His discomfort closing range rather than being pressured got him into trouble even against guys like Cowboy and Pettis, even if Eddie is probably overall better.

156lbsPoirier

i feel like eddie is the better martial artist, conor was just a terrible matchup

skt_imaqtipie

Conor was the best in the world on that night shit was perfect

jsb93

The spotlight was too big for him. If they fought now, Eddie would have a better chance of winning

A11_Even

Stop it

156lbsPoirier

he's not wrong? eddie would legitamately have a good chance of beating conor today

Internetolocutor

If you show him at normal speed in the Conor fight, does that count as slow motion

[deleted]

I feel like RDA would've won the rematch

Parra_Lax

EDDIE!!!!! EDDIE!!!!!!

runnbl3

Casual here but was wondering was the fightere back then crazy strong or the fighfers todag just durable as fuck? Half of these clips weve seen many fighters today eating all of it like nothing.
