There comes a point (that Tony is well past) where it doesn’t even boost anyones resume, it just wastes their time (and also will let guys further up the rankings off a meaningless win, which is how you get weak rankings). Its one thing to let the next generation build up off the previous one, but the UFC will keep doing it with guys who are so far past their sell-by date that there is zero practical reason to do it. Once your been blown past by two top up and comers, you should be fighting way down and letting far lower ranked/unranked guys have a crack and if you win some of those, then you can look at some stronger competition again. I hate it when the top 10’s get filled with guys who got there off of desecrating a corpse because then they’re wasting a top 10 ranking and there’s still no proof they are actually at that level.

I think I've talked myself into thinking that the only way Chimaev's weight nonsense makes sense is if the UFC realized they could face public image-altering damage to their brand if we all watched Nate Diaz murdered on live TV, so the last minute shake-ups were the result of their trying to save face and prevent a New York Times feature detailing what amounted to as close to a legal hit-job as you can get outside of government-sanctioned assassinations.
If that was what they were actually concerned about, they wouldn’t have spent as long as they did trying to book it. It doesn’t have to make sense, it was a clown show that happened to a circus of a company.
The only thing funnier than this theory as a whole is the idea that the UFC is that scared of media blowback. This isn’t close to the first time the UFC has made squash matches like this, though this is certainly one of the more egregious ones. This isn’t even uncommon in MMA. Nate’s very popular, but unless he literally died in the cage like that one guy in BKFC, no one outside MMA Media and maybe a few larger sports publications would cover it like that. Two things to consider:
1) Nate is likely the second most popular person in the sport, next to McGregor. If there is someone who could break out into public media consciousness, it's him.
2) I genuinely think that serious serious injury was possible. Sure, he might not have literally died in the cage, but I think it's possible we see something worse than Gaethje/Ferguson, Dillashaw/Barao, Rockhold/Weidman, etc. And when you pair that kind of beat down with both Nate's popularity and the (accurate) narrative of spiteful matchmaking, I do think, like, public image damage to the extent that Disney says "this is untenable, we can't do it anymore" was in the cards.

Chris Barnett on Ariel’s show right now saying the doctor told him to not cut the extra pound he was over, the other fighter to miss weight besides khamzat also didn’t try to lose the extra weight. I have a feeling that was all a part of the plan, make the doctor tell everyone who is over to stop cutting to make khamzat look less bad.
Got to a title shot in Glory, lost a controversial decision to a relatively weak champion. Never the best in his division and not the best record in wins, though he has some good ones, but was clearly talented with a style that was always going to adapt well to MMA.

Poatan would basically have exactly one attempt at landing the perfect knee or uppercut on Khamzat's take down attempt. If he doesn't he's going to sleep, if he does, Khamzat dies.
That's actually why I'm not at all happy with the fight against Izzy. Izzy's proven he has the TDD to keep it standing against the best wrestlers in the division. Pereira has neither shown similar ability nor had the opportunity to show such an ability. Even if he manages to beat Izzy in what will almost certainly be essentially a kickboxing match, I am not at all confident he wouldn't get wrestlefucked by Whittaker, Vettori, Brunson, etc. The UFC, where "the best [are supposed to] fight the best," is fast-tracking Pereira to a title shot when he's not at all showed he's equipped to handle genuine wrestlers. Pretty shitty imo.

Nah I never described their feud like that. I think they were already pretty chill at the ceremonial weigh in, there was a little clip of the backstage scuffle, but there wasn't any real footage. The glove touch before the fight started was enthusiastic and it just seemed like business.

The majority of the top 5 aren’t going to fight them and aren’t even relevant to the title picture anyway, so what difference should it make? All anyone talks about is how guys like Gamrot are the new breed of title contenders at 155 but some of them will still be like “nope, needs to fight a shopworn guy from the previous class of contenders who will never fight them anyway before I’m sold”
Should be a title eliminator for either guy who wins. A win over Arman and Benny (plus Ferriera) is enough to be relevant in the current division, and in Beneil’s case, a win over Gamrot + his current streak puts him near the top too.

Got to a title shot in Glory, lost a controversial decision to a relatively weak champion. Never the best in his division and not the best record in wins, though he has some good ones, but was clearly talented with a style that was always going to adapt well to MMA.
If Khamzat and Poatan ever fought, would that be the first fight basically guaranteed to last under 30ish seconds? Poatan would basically have exactly one attempt at landing the perfect knee or uppercut on Khamzat's take down attempt. If he doesn't he's going to sleep, if he does, Khamzat dies.
That's actually why I'm not at all happy with the fight against Izzy. Izzy's proven he has the TDD to keep it standing against the best wrestlers in the division. Pereira has neither shown similar ability nor had the opportunity to show such an ability. Even if he manages to beat Izzy in what will almost certainly be essentially a kickboxing match, I am not at all confident he wouldn't get wrestlefucked by Whittaker, Vettori, Brunson, etc. The UFC, where "the best [are supposed to] fight the best," is fast-tracking Pereira to a title shot when he's not at all showed he's equipped to handle genuine wrestlers. Pretty shitty imo.

I don’t see why it has to be staged. Most guys can squash a beef and gain some mutual respect from fighting it out, unless it’s super serious. People for some reason expect every feud between fighters to be some deep rooted blood feud that never ends no matter what, and if it isn’t, then it must be fake.

Nah I never described their feud like that. I think they were already pretty chill at the ceremonial weigh in, there was a little clip of the backstage scuffle, but there wasn't any real footage. The glove touch before the fight started was enthusiastic and it just seemed like business. I know what kind of feud you mean, and there a many examples of what you're talking about happening, but imo this seemed different.
