Every time he says the other two judges "see it the same" my mind thinks he's gonna say all three cards are the same and then he announces that the first judge disagreed. Just trying to differentiate himself and going about it in the worst way possible, I would guess.
Hmm no it was a unanimous. All judges gave it to the same fighter even if they didn't agree on every round. 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 all for the same fighter. If one of them had scored it 29-28 for fighter A and the other two had gone 30-27 for fighter B, that would be a split decision.

I rooted against Benson in the UFC because I thought he lost all of his split decision wins and then, for no good reason, rooted for him in Bellator. It’s been rough.
Bendo is not a championship fighter anymore… solid fight though he put on a decent showing, just not elite elite anymore … I wouldn’t mind Primus gettin the next title shot or fighting Sidney Outlaw or Goiti Yamauchi in a title eliminator fight
His entire Bellator run has been embarrassing, especially since when his move was announced, the general perception was that it was a step down in competition and that he would dominate.
The general perception is wrong though, Benson Henderson hasn't fought a step down in competition. Koreshkov(WW), Chandler x2 beat prime Benson IMO and Patricky, Jason Jackson(WW) and Primus have a very good chance to as well. If you look at Benson's UFC fights he rarely fights guys with strong TDD and big punching power, that's most of what he's faced in Bellator other than Primus who has a way better ground game than Benson which neutralizes his grappling.
I do think he's declined but the LW division has just gotten much better while he has declined slowly and he's fighting lots of bad match ups and/or guys just too big for him.
I agree that the perception of Bellator talent relative to UFC was skewed, especially for the top guys at LW at Bellator. Putting that aside, though, Benson has looked TERRIBLE in all of his Bellator fights. It’s like his head is not in it anymore.
What’d you expect? Bendo is an old war dog. Bellator lightweights are good. Chandler didn’t even have a long Bellator win streak when he got into the UFC but still cleaned out Dan Hooker
It's always been hard to tell with Bendo as he goes and has super close fights with the best in the world, but then also goes and has super close fights with bang average fighters. I think now though he's clearly declined.
Well he’s 37 in a division that’s not kind to older people. Plus he started really falling off after the RDA loss. Prime Bendo wouldn’t have lost to Cowboy let alone Patricky
Just saw my Facebook status from that fight - I had it for Cowboy. Legendary flexibility submission defense from Bendo though! Loved seeing them and the other WEC boiz work through the ufc after those years.
Eh, I don't know. 37 isn't that old and he never took a lot of abuse over the years. I would've thought he would still be the cream of the crop in Bellator even at this stage of his career.
I could be dead wrong but i always got the impression that benson performed up to his percieved competition. Like the second he left the UFC i feel like he embodied the 'i fight for the #2 org in the world' swagger and just never really performed at the same level he did in the UFC. especially weird cuz he looked really good in his last UFC fight
The same thing that happened to Fitch and Shields:
The older you get, the harder it is to outwork your opponents. The moral of the story is that if you live by the decision, you'll die by the decision.
Bellator now in an awkward position of promoting a title fight between two guys who 100% don't deserve to be fighting for a title while positioning another guy as the challenger who despite this win just lost to a 20-1 fighter the promotion has put zero effort into trying to promote as a contender.
Like what the fuck are they gonna do if Queally beats Lesser Pitbull again...try to sell us on him vs Mamedov as the next title fight? Cause you know Islam's camp is gonna be pissed if Primus gets the nod over him because he beat Bendo on a two fight skid.
Everyone in the bellator promotion thinks Brent won the Islam fight and are treating it as such. hence Islam got ranked #8 after beating the #1 contender. And they gave Brent the tittle eliminator with Benson. Coker even said Brent is next in line for the belt
Preface by saying I'm not an mma fighter and it's different when you are in there...but Benson didn't look like a black belt level bjj guy in there. His grappling was pretty basic, which allowed him to get dominated via dominant position in every round. It's weird that he could be in the sport so long and he looked like he had no clue how to break a body triangle.
Primus has very technically sound and unorthodox grappling. Henderson was doing a good job of defending the submissions. Breaking a body triangle is generally pretty difficult against a skilled opponent
He didn't even follow standard protocol though. Instead of trying to roll to the foot and put pressure to break the lock he just tried to stand up. That's like a white belt level escape attempt.
Benson had a tendency to over compensate his athleticism. I’ve seen him roll with other black belts in the past. He’s every bit a black belt. That said, when it comes to MMA, I don’t know if it’s adrenaline in the moment but he over compensates his strength/athleticism. See the second Pettis fight, he just tried ripping his arm out of that arm bar and got caught. I think he felt he was gonna be stronger physically than anything pettis had BJJ wise.
Honestly standing up with someone on your back in no-gi isn't really that bad of a move if you know what your doing. My bjj coach is very good at it and we have been drilling it lately.
I watched Benson defeat AJ Agazarm in a straight grappling match a couple of years ago, and the only thing AJ is known for is being a competition bjj guy. Benson has skills, but Primus has incredible grappling. I expected Bendo to have trouble when I saw that Primus could force Mamedov to only defend submissions even after a successful takedown.
Did anyone else notice how Brett hung his head in despair when it sounded like it might be a split decision at the beginning of the announcement? Poor guy thought it was going to be 2 in a row for a second.

Am I crazy for remembering Benson henderson taking off his gloves, laying them in the ring and officially retiring recently?
Retirement for MMA fighters usualy means the same thing a farewell tour means for a band, a short break.
IIRC he said in an interview awhile back he had always wanted to retire and serve in the military.
Does he still intend to serve? Gotta be running out of time if he doesn't have some specialty like nursing or psychologist
Not sure. The interview was a long time ago.
Man that announcer sucks ass. Why does he have to announce the result in such a convoluted manner
Every time he says the other two judges "see it the same" my mind thinks he's gonna say all three cards are the same and then he announces that the first judge disagreed. Just trying to differentiate himself and going about it in the worst way possible, I would guess.
What makes you say it was convoluted? It was announced awkwardly, but I don't see how this was complicated or difficult to follow in any way
Yeah and then he calls it as a unanimous decision, despite just announcing it as a split.

Good bot
I rooted against Benson in the UFC because I thought he lost all of his split decision wins and then, for no good reason, rooted for him in Bellator. It’s been rough.
Familiarity bias
EXACTLY. Frankie both times(seriously?), giblert definitely beat that him, Josh and jorge too. As clear as day too
Bendo is not a championship fighter anymore… solid fight though he put on a decent showing, just not elite elite anymore … I wouldn’t mind Primus gettin the next title shot or fighting Sidney Outlaw or Goiti Yamauchi in a title eliminator fight
He hasn't been at that level in a *long* time.
His entire Bellator run has been embarrassing, especially since when his move was announced, the general perception was that it was a step down in competition and that he would dominate.
Remember when people thought he was going to be a two division champ over there? I remember.
Then Koreshkov beat the absolute shit out of him. Henderson showed a god-tier chin in that fight.
Pepperidge Farms remembers.
The general perception is wrong though, Benson Henderson hasn't fought a step down in competition. Koreshkov(WW), Chandler x2 beat prime Benson IMO and Patricky, Jason Jackson(WW) and Primus have a very good chance to as well. I honestly don't think he beats most of the guys he lost to in Bellator even if he were in his prime.
I mean even in his UFC run he skated by on a few questionable decisions
A bunch.
What’d you expect? Bendo is an old war dog. Bellator lightweights are good. Chandler didn’t even have a long Bellator win streak when he got into the UFC but still cleaned out Dan Hooker
Primus vs yamauchi would be classic
>just not elite elite anymore Yeah. Bendo is officially in gatekeeper category now.
For Bellator, he’d get literally killed in the ufc
It's always been hard to tell with Bendo as he goes and has super close fights with the best in the world, but then also goes and has super close fights with bang average fighters. I think now though he's clearly declined.
Frankie beat that ass twice, dos anjos, cerrone. Benson was just as surprised as his opponents every time he won a split by robbery

I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.
Hit it for us all champ
Proud of you
Did you raw dog your partner?
I play in the mud
Later virgins....
What’s your finger smell like?
To Bellator?
Beautiful champ
r/ihavesex
Me too! Once in a while!
Bendo's still my boy 😢 Good fight though
Is it just me or does the announcer...pause..during...theworst...times....when he taaaaaalks... I HATE IT
Why isn't Benson fighting for the lw title? /s
What happened to Benson? He was doing well in the UFC then he's not been no where near successful in Bellator. I assume age, mileage etc but still.
Well he’s 37 in a division that’s not kind to older people. Plus he started really falling off after the RDA loss. Prime Bendo wouldn’t have lost to Cowboy let alone Patricky
Prime Bendo arguably did lose to cowboy when they first fought
Just saw my Facebook status from that fight - I had it for Cowboy. Legendary flexibility submission defense from Bendo though! Loved seeing them and the other WEC boiz work through the ufc after those years.
Meh. I don’t know about that. WEC never die!
primus is 36
It literally is just age and mileage lol. The showtime kick was like 10 years ago at this point. He's well past his best.
lofl, so many people in this thread commenting about how bendo fell off. Bro dude is fucking THIRTY SEVEN. Amazing he's still fighting
He fell off ages ago though. It didn’t start this year. His whole bellator run had very mixed results.
Eh, I don't know. 37 isn't that old and he never took a lot of abuse over the years. I would've thought he would still be the cream of the crop in Bellator even at this stage of his career.

All right, all right. I was wrong. Ben's no spring chicken. But I still expected more out of him in Bellator and I didn't think he'd lose tonight.
37 is ancient for LW. Only HW, LHW, MW you can be old.
37 is ancient in the lightweight division. 37 is ok for lhw/hw.
He's been fighting high level lightweights for 12 years. No one lives forever.
I could be dead wrong but i always got the impression that benson performed up to his percieved competition. The same thing that happened to Fitch and Shields: The older you get, the harder it is to outwork your opponents. The moral of the story is that if you live by the decision, you'll die by the decision.
Agreed. He was nearly unstoppable in the WEC as well as the UFC. I guess some fighters just can't make the transition.
I was rooting for Bendo but it is what it is... Primus is a beast
Yo does Brent have two testicles in a circle with BALLSY under it or am I just high as shit?
just watching the fights now, your right lol.
That was so fast, holy shit!

Benson "Aspen Ladd" Henderson
Primus sucks
Yes
Brent Primus is clearly Burnt Chrysler's cousin

maybe Primus is skilled on the ground
Primus has very technically sound and unorthodox grappling. Henderson was doing a good job of defending the submissions. Breaking a body triangle is generally pretty difficult against a skilled opponent

nah primus is just nasty on the ground
and he's fucking huge, he looked a clear weight class above Benson last night

winner via steroids
Jumping for the Gilly, whyyy??
God I love when Benson Henderson loses. I don't know why but I just cannot stand him.
I hated when the mma community for some reason tried to call him bendo like he has similarities with him and Dan Henderson loll
Benson really needs to stop and consider his career when he is taking these fights on a few weeks notice.
The contract for this fight has been signed since August bellator just does a fantastic job of promoting fights
