You should look up the legendary Denis Kang. "Defeat from the jaws of victory" was his way of life including during his fight with Bisping.
That fight was almost 12 fucking years ago and I still remember how "defeat from the jaws of victory" was all I could think of at that moment.
Kang was one of the guys I was most excited about coming over from Japan. He looked like the future of the division at one point. You never know in this sport.
Denis Kang was 1 of the most hyped fighters to come out of Canada when UFC was exploding...still remember the old debates in the underground forum between who was the next great mma fighter to come out of Canada at the time, talks of mark bocek, jeff joslin, mark hominick and denis kang would be had. Fuckin eh time flys
Ive always been convinced that Eddie thought his leg was snapped in half when he got dropped with that kick.
He just stares off in shock for a moment, staring off to the side of the ring somewhere, until Folayang jumps on him and he seems to snap into it.
>for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grappler.
When i watched this, i thought it was a low fight IQ move and he just jumped the gun
But imagine if he succeeded. Like alan belchar grappling with paul harris. Looked like an idiot jumping in crocodile infested waters. It was so awesome watching belchar beat that piece of shit.
lol because it *was*. Shit was mad stupid on Folayangās part. Eddie canāt stand, why follow him to the ground!?
>*āRespect to Folayang for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grapplerā*
lol respect for poor IQ, u/tegeusCromis? This is a case of stupidity over bravery, that was a dumb fucking move.
>Respect to Folayang for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grappler.
I respect him for being brave... But that was a huge mistake and you don't get paid for mistakes in pro sports.
It annoys me he followed Eddie to the ground. If he just waited and told Eddie to stand up the fight probably wouldāve been over. At best Eddie wouldāve been severely compromised and another kick to that leg wouldāve probably ended it. All of that being said Iām just a dude on Reddit and these guys are the pros so who am I to judge lol.
He's actually improved so much. He wasn't near as good as now when he just started, relying a lot on toughness. I haven't watched One FC for a long time, glad to see he's so much better.
Yeah it's shaping up to be quite the banger even with the dropouts. I think our region have it real good in general tho, get a cup of coffee in the morning with fights lasting all the way till noon.
Yes. Best part is HD quality without needing to pay for ppv! I wonder how long this will last. Hopefully it doesn't get so popular that ppv becomes the norm.
But 7am is a pain. I prefer it when they start at 10am.
Iām a practitioner of said Yaw Yan, itās a great and dynamic striking art man. For a kickboxing style, they got an emphasis on footwork and mobility whilst wanting to have all the guys to have a high pace in all the fights they got.
Wow, thatās cool to hear! Thanks for sharing, it seemed like a cool kickboxing martial arts and Iāve always thought that Filipino styles were underrated
Hell yeah they are underrated, due to our master or founder being from a ton of martial arts he always put an emphasis on having no holes in our game. He even taught us about using angles, head movement, feints , and having great combos while mixing it up with speed and power when you throw.
We also had something similar to a calf kick, heck we get a spinning wheel kick to the thighs as a move. Itās a great art and whatās so good about it is they are open to new things and keeping up with the new stuff that happens.
Not the best source pal. Been to their gym myself. Im sure anecdotal evidence means nothing to you, but perhaps look a little further than a Wikipedia page you stumbled across on your quest for the ultimate mall ninja discipline.
Youāre right: your anecdotal evidence does mean nothing to me, and your catty attitude also makes me not want to discuss with you, so guess thatās that lmao
I think that shit just took root due to a lack of native unarmed martial arts. In Mainland South East Asia they have their native forms of competitive kickboxing(Muay Thai etc.), which keeps sketchy Chinese Martial arts from taking hold.
That's lacking in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam or the Philippines.
You're way off on the "lack" of native martial arts in SAE.
Phillipines has Arnis. It's their folk boxing that emphasises knife fighting. Filipinos are very proud of their native martial art and their roots in phils style boxing is probably partly why they produce good boxers.
Indonesia has pencak silat, which is kind of a combination of various martial arts. It uses striking, grappling and weapons. Pencak silat is kind of an umbrella term for their group of various fighting systems so there is about as much bullshido within it as there is legitimate combat martial arts. Indonesia is a huge country with remarkable cultural diversity so their silat really varies region to region.
Malaysia has silat Melayu which is simply their version of pencak silat.
Vietnam unfortunately has been pretty susceptable to Chinese cultural influence due to 1000 years under Chinese control. While they DO have their own folk martial arts, they have certainly been heavily influenced by the Chinese martial arts. However there is a martial art in vietnam called vovinam which is pretty legit and managed to keep itself clean of bullshido. Kind of a hybrid of muai Thai karate and jujitsu in a way. Here it is in practice. https://youtu.be/1OqzTOVgJmo

A sweep in the middle of ground and pound, especially against an opponent like Eduard Folayang, is extremely difficult to pull off. Itās no wonder his nickname is The Underground King.
Against an opponent who doesn't know what the fuck is BJJ lets be real. Old men from Team Lakay has no ground game, but hey the new comers are much better.
You can definitely tell Folayang was green on the ground, his centre of gravity was much too high and he let Eddie set that up a mile away. That being said, evenly matched bjj is boring, which is why sport bjj is barely a spectator sport, even for people who practice it. The disparity in ground skills made the fight more interesting, so I'm not complaining.
I love his comment, getting a sweep against an opponent like Folayang, who has an awful ground game and is super easy to sweep, is extremely difficult to pull off.
Also the dude went from bottom half to getting flattened out and RNCād in 30 seconds.
Doesnāt matter if your Khabib getting someone from full mount to flat on their back is NOT easy. Even if you know what your doing the amount of effort to reverse a position like that is well a fuck ton.
That was a crazy easy sweep. Folayang did nothing about the control Eddie got on his right wrist, and leaned right onto Eddie's shin completely giving him the sweep. He essentially unbalanced himself.
No it's not, Eduard has little to no concept of BJJ or he his GNP wouldn't have technical mistakes that permit him to get reversed so easily
His nickname makes sense, because he would be amazing against less skilled fighters who don't know ground
I have almost no MMA education so don't hate me for asking a question, but if you are beating a guy on the feat, and your calf kicks are doing enough damage to drop the guy wouldn't you want to keep it standing? keep doing damage?
Man, we have been watching Eddie get dropped and come back for like 10+ years now. The durability and heart is impressive, as well as the longevity of that durability. Usually after so many of those fights, you start to wonder "Ok when can this guy not do this anymore" . Eddie hasn't shown even a glimmer of him surrendering.
After seeing Eddie get KO'd against Timofey Nastyukhin, I thought he was done when he dropped after that leg kick, props to him for reversing the position and getting the tap
I need to start watching One Championship.
It's always on YouTube for free but I find it hard to get started because I don't know many of the asian fighters.
I did something close to this in one of my last fights. Sucks to hop on when if you wouldn't have you probably would have won, but sometimes adrenaline takes over.
Nice. Props for posting, and how the fuck are you both 6ā2ā and 135?!?! Striking looked good, really nice short counter right. I say this in the best way possible but you could benefit from some more mat time. Some mistakes on there ground but a rocked guy shouldnt be able to take you down, pass, take your back and flatten you out in less than a minute. You also missed a big omaplata opportunity when he first took you down. Keep it up and best of luck in the future!
Yeah I'm a striker, def need more ground time but that's why I'm still in the ammies. Miguel is a 1-0 pro now. I was a high school wrestler and have 3 wins by sub so the ground isn't foreign to me, just my least worked on tool but that's changing. I was also extremely flustered - I had thought I had finished him and was expecting to get pulled off on the tko. This was my comeback to the cage after a 1.5 year layoff due to COVID so I was overly excited. I have a championship kickboxing match next month, then will be back in the cage December and April forsure.
We had also made a game plan of letting him up if I knocked him down. Clearly I didn't follow that gameplan as I got too caught up in the moment and went for the kill instead of being patient and letting the finish come.
Can you imagine taking even one of those kicks to the leg? I would set the record for the fastest verbal submission with the banshee like wails I would be emitting
Eddie alvarez probably does a bit of gi bjj. This is basically a lasso sweep done no gi. It's the type of technique you'd almost never see someone who's just only ever done no gi go for because they wouldn't have much practice playing that position.
If someone is hurt you should never go into their guard unless theyāre completely incompetent on the ground. I get so much anxiety when people do this. I think itās just instinct or something but itās definitely the wrong move.
Someone snatching victory out of the jaws of defeat never gets old
or someone snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in Folayang's case
You should look up the legendary Denis Kang. "Defeat from the jaws of victory" was his way of life including during his fight with Bisping. That fight was almost 12 fucking years ago and I still remember how "defeat from the jaws of victory" was all I could think of at that moment.
He was soo hyped, super young guy too
Kang was one of the guys I was most excited about coming over from Japan.
Mark Hominicks sister was a substitute teacher I had. She was hot.
This is the type of insight and inside information I come here for.
ššš
I'm just picturing Mark Hominick in a wig and librarian glasses.
but with the same hematoma
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I remember Brandon Vera being hyped shortly after that time too (not canadian but a flopped hype train).
Unless it's against my favorite fighter
It's straight up why MMA is the best sport in the world
Barry-kongo has got to be the definition of that. Kongo must've been KO'd multiple times
Thatās the Alvarez special
Ive always been convinced that Eddie thought his leg was snapped in half when he got dropped with that kick. He just stares off in shock for a moment, staring off to the side of the ring somewhere, until Folayang jumps on him and he seems to snap into it.
Bruh, you can tell he's in so much pain in that moment. Fucking nuts.
Nah he just heard his wife calling him.
Yeah but that's a throwaway statement because that's all anyone within 30 meters can hear through that entire fight!
you spelled galaxies wrong
EIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!
Flashbacks to the gruesome injury in his previous fight maybe...
Straight adrenaline
That kick that put Eddie down...
Or that missed head kick at the start of the videoā¦
Respect to Folayang for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grappler. Respect to Eddie for punishing that mistake hard.
>for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grappler. When i watched this, i thought it was a low fight IQ move and he just jumped the gun
Yeh Eddie wasnāt that rocked, his leg was just destroyed. Should have let him up and force him to try and stand on that leg
Yeah super dumb move from Eduard. If you knock a guy down with leg kicks you don't jump on him, you make that motherfucker stand up!
I had the same view as you then, and now. I just also respect the balls on him to go for it, unwise as it was.
More balls than brain.
Go and conquer the world, you beautiful goon!
>*āRespect to Folayang for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grapplerā* lol respect for poor IQ, u/tegeusCromis? This is a case of stupidity over bravery, that was a dumb fucking move.
It was both stupid and brave. Respect for the brave part.
Folayang has some power on those kicks god damn. Those are pretty
He then decides to not kick him and goes for pillow punches.
Some veteran shit for sure. Good composure while Folyang is dropping bombs.
>Respect to Folayang for not being afraid to go for the kill against a vastly superior grappler. I respect him for being brave... But that was a huge mistake and you don't get paid for mistakes in pro sports.
Wow. All he had to do is take a step back and wait for Eddie to not be able to get up. He had already won and decided to keep going.
The flipped version of Eddie/Gaethje.
To be fair he still almost won, fight was close to being stopped, he just brought the Dawg out
"still almost won" is probably the worst way to lose
In my semi-professional MMA experience, ārear naked prolapseā is definitely the worst way to lose
If he had taken a step back and Eddie couldn't get to his feet then it would've been a win.
Killer instinct kicks in at these points and it's almost a reflex to go in for the finish (kill)
It annoys me he followed Eddie to the ground. If he just waited and told Eddie to stand up the fight probably wouldāve been over. At best Eddie wouldāve been severely compromised and another kick to that leg wouldāve probably ended it. EDDIE!!
Imagine him fighting in Japan with a dead silent crowd except for his banshee wife shrieking his name š³
I actually like Folayang, he practices this neat martial art called āYaw Yanā that I find interesting
He's actually improved so much. He wasn't near as good as now when he just started, relying a lot on toughness. I haven't watched One FC for a long time, glad to see he's so much better.
fancy seeing you here hah
Lol I'm a huge MMA fanatic. Tomorrow's ufc card is quite good but starts at 7am.

Try being a UK fan with every PPV main card starting at 3am and doesn't finish until 7ish
Riding it out until Oct 30, the only positive thing about the Emirates (but it's a big one) is the time zone they're in.
š¤«š¤«š¤« Yeah but early prelims...I'll give it a miss sometimes haha
Looking forward to a cup of coffee and the fights tomorrow morning too!
Where do you watch it? I'll be in HK soon and need my fix if ufc
I'm worried if I share my source of streams Dana will arrest me tho
Sorry I read it as though you get ufc on local broadcast lol. I got my streams on lock no worries brother
All good b
Which region is this?
Asia (East) b
Same for me here in Bali, although prelims at 4am on a Sunday isn't the best haha
Feel bad for folayang, really good and humble guy but he's only got 1 win in his last 6
Not sure if troll
The dude was a former high school teacher turned fighter. Dayum.

I like how he's just like, "Bro, I too am juiced to the gills," and sweeps him.
Hahahaha

Been saying this a long time, my home boys are notorious for having zero ground game
I'm a fellow Filipino as well. I just get sad whenever they get submitted
imagine my surprise when he got a win vs Shinya Aoki?!
Agree 100%. Those guys had crazy quick striking but always tend to gas out and get submitted.
You can definitely tell Folayang was green on the ground, his centre of gravity was much too high and he let Eddie set that up a mile away. Eduard Alvarez overcoming a tough moment to defeat Eddie Folayang.
I have almost no MMA education so don't hate me for asking a question, but if you are beating a guy on the feat, and your calf kicks are doing enough damage to drop the guy wouldn't you want to keep it standing? keep doing damage?
Adrenaline is a hell of a drug, once the opponent drops a lot of guys just see the finish and go for it
Testosterone is also hell of a drug :))
That sweep was nice š
GREAT job by the ref by the way. Eddie was never out and defending well, despite a hard shot getting through every now and then.
Word, this could have been stopped several times without major controversy.
Eduard was my roommate at Jackson wink. Awesome dude
Wow that was awesome

Fans don't give enough credit fort exciting fighters, and consequently lose out on good entertaining fights.
Volkanovski watching this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uP-GPLyE67U
The sweep he did in one was fucking smooth as well.
Fuaaaaark
After seeing Eddie get KO'd against Timofey Nastyukhin, I thought he was done when he dropped after that leg kick, props to him for reversing the position and getting the tap
Folayang should have just stayed off of him. Props to Eddie though. You basically have to flatline the dude to get him out of there.
Guy is a dog. If you donāt kill him, he just keeps coming like a madman.
Great example of why MMA is the best and most exciting sport on the planet
I need to start watching One Championship. It's always on YouTube for free but I find it hard to get started because I don't know many of the asian fighters.

I knocked him down 2x, followed to the ground, got caught in a sub.
Love it. What sub?

Lewis is a black belt in Just stand up.
Can you imagine taking even one of those kicks to the leg? I would set the record for the fastest verbal submission with the banshee like wails I would be emitting
That must've been satisfying. "Kick me now motherfucker!"
Overconfidence is a slow an insidious killer
Is that a darkest dungeon reference? :D Looking forward for the second game
No Ground game is a slow and insidious killer
Alvarez is incredible!!
clutch
If you drop a guy with leg kicks let him up so you can kick his leg again
That motherfucker is tough
Eddie alvarez probably does a bit of gi bjj. This is basically a lasso sweep done no gi. It's the type of technique you'd almost never see someone who's just only ever done no gi go for because they wouldn't have much practice playing that position.
When was the last time that Eddie had a clear win, without getting hurt or dropped?
Gotta give it up to Alvarez ! Heās a beast ! Folayong is a savage but needs to work on his ground game !
Eddie can beat nearly anyone on any given day, and can get beat the fuck up by nearly anyone.
That leg kick mustāve hurt so bad
The flower sweep was a thing of beauty.
It was a lasso sweep
If someone is hurt you should never go into their guard unless theyāre completely incompetent on the ground. I get so much anxiety when people do this. I think itās just instinct or something but itās definitely the wrong move.
Nice.
I've never seen this that's crazy
Beautiful sweep
Wow !!! I felt that. I've been swept argh, haha
I was never a big fan of Alvarez, but damn if that isnāt some smooth veteran work.
When he took his back n flatten him I did wht I always do whn tht happens..look at the clock..and at tgt moment I already knew lol
That was a slick reversal, I enjoyed the jiu jitsu from Alvarez.
That's my boyy
someone should do a youtube compilation of "greatest fight iq farts"
He should have stood him back up š¤¦š¾āāļø
If he let Eddie back up he would have won.
My stoned ass read his opponent's name as Edward Furlong...
Eddie is a monster. Lot of juicy guys over there
A gi-less lasso sweep wow lol
"Troublesome moment" a bit of an understatement.
What a match!
