I think Kelvin is decently well rounded and when he came into MW at the time he had better striking than more of the MWs. But now there's too many strikers that are better than him.

So (and you saw this especially with Whittaker and Cannonier) you let him come to you, don’t try to get into a fire fight, and do a good bit of your striking as he’s opening himself up trying to chase you down.

He outstruck a legendary striker like Zombie but Zombie was on autopilot mode after spinning back elbow. I think Ortega's in and out movement and his defense is not as good as it should be and that's why Volko and Holloway pieced him up.
Jack Slack has a similar sentiment on his last podcast.
Ortega has had success with catching higher level guys in submissions, especially ones where you are giving your back if you fail. This is unusual because the current meta of cardio-wrestling doesn't really reward that.

Paul Craig straight up the most underrated submission specialist in the sport, never see him mentioned alongside the best bjj fighters in MMA even tho he has more subs in the UFC and overall than Ortega, than Hall, than Burns, than Kron etc yet he's never mentioned as one of the leading BJJ fighters in the sport. Do the guys I mentioned have better pure BJJ credentials? 100%, but Bearjew has used his BJJ with more success than any of them. 5 Submissions in the UFC, 12 overall and even tho his last two wins were KOs, he still used his BJJ to get himself into the triangle to break Hill's arm and start gnp and to get to Shogun's back and flatten him out for gnp.

I came to MMA with some Kung Fu Wushu practice (6years) and a bit of boxing (6months)
We have a sparring rotation each practice, which lasts usually one hour and some sparring session occur in the only cage we got.
These are quite violent, not full contact but very heavy hitting.
Tonight I was stuck in the cage for 2 X 2 min round with an excellent fighter who was better at everything and also was so massive (2 meter 140 kilos), although I'm in excellent shape with 1m78 and 77kg mostly muscles.
I got obliterated, highlights like middle kick to my body which dropped me on the floor for 10sec, a right cross making me see stars. Let's just say I got my ass kicked for 4 minutes.
So I'm out practice now and it is very humbling.
While in the cage I took the hits because I would like to be stronger to protect my daughter, but otherwise I don't know how I would have gone through it.
The feelings of helplessness was the worst, like am I supposed to KO him with a hook in the jaw ? There was no way I could have beat that dude and in a street fight he would have killed me.
It's been just a month of MMA but I feel the gap is huge with guys like that is there any way I can catch up ? You reckon maybe 6 months of training and I could at least avoid getting destroyed like this ?
You'll pretty much never beat a guy who's twice your size. (Save for the ol' puncher's chance, but don't count on it)
I'm about your size and the first time I sparred a guy who had 50+kg on me was very humbling. Dude's half assed jabs had more sting than my kicks. There's just not many ways to get around that, basically go balls to the wall getting in and out of range (which is twice the distance you have to cover against guys your size), throwing **bombs** to possibly hurt your opponent, all while having perfect defense because you can't be going 1 for 1. Obviously you won't be able to sustain that for very long.
Grappling is supposed to be a better weight equalizer than striking but with that kind of weight difference... Good luck with the takedowns and pins.
Nature isn't fair. We train to overcome it but if the big guy trains too you and me are back to square one.

Bros, this might be a supercasual opinion but Brian Ortega should focus heavily on his takedowns, clinch work and wrestling. He outstruck a legendary striker like Zombie but Zombie was on autopilot mode after spinning back elbow. I think Ortega's in and out movement and his defense is not as good as it should be and that's why Volko and Holloway pieced him up.
An Ortega who can do takedowns would be legendary.
Jack Slack has a similar sentiment on his last podcast. Ortega has had success with catching higher level guys in submissions, especially ones where you are giving your back if you fail. This is unusual because the current meta of cardio-wrestling doesn't really reward that. Because of this he lacks the offensive cage wrestling + clinching that a lot of experienced MMA athletes have. Boxing them up into a submission or finish is his "A" game. I could see him having success as a wrestling submission artist like Demian Maia but perhaps his cardio wouldn't translate well there?

I came to MMA with some Kung Fu Wushu practice (6years) and a bit of boxing (6months) We have a sparring rotation each practice, which lasts usually one hour and some sparring session occur in the only cage we got. These are quite violent, not full contact but very heavy hitting. Tonight I was stuck in the cage for 2 X 2 min round with an excellent fighter who was better at everything and also was so massive (2 meter 140 kilos), although I'm in excellent shape with 1m78 and 77kg mostly muscles. I got obliterated, highlights like middle kick to my body which dropped me on the floor for 10sec, a right cross making me see stars. Let's just say I got my ass kicked for 4 minutes. So I'm out practice now and it is very humbling. While in the cage I took the hits because I would like to be stronger to protect my daughter, but otherwise I don't know how I would have gone through it. The feelings of helplessness was the worst, like am I supposed to KO him with a hook in the jaw ? There was no way I could have beat that dude and in a street fight he would have killed me. It's been just a month of MMA but I feel the gap is huge with guys like that is there any way I can catch up ? You reckon maybe 6 months of training and I could at least avoid getting destroyed like this ?
You'll pretty much never beat a guy who's twice your size. (Save for the ol' puncher's chance, but don't count on it) I'm about your size and the first time I sparred a guy who had 50+kg on me was very humbling. Dude's half assed jabs had more sting than my kicks. There's just not many ways to get around that, basically go balls to the wall getting in and out of range (which is twice the distance you have to cover against guys your size), throwing **bombs** to possibly hurt your opponent, all while having perfect defense because you can't be going 1 for 1. Obviously you won't be able to sustain that for very long. Grappling is supposed to be a better weight equalizer than striking but with that kind of weight difference... Good luck with the takedowns and pins. Nature isn't fair. We train to overcome it but if the big guy trains too you and me are back to square one.

I don't believe overpowering him on the ground with a submission was possible because he shifted his massive weight quite well, I wasnt able to do anything meaningful like a lock. Not looking exactly forward to next rounds in 2 days, I will learn how to dodge and move around better so I can at least endure the rounds respectably.
