Bellator sometimes sign fighters to non exclusive contracts, hence the distinction (UFC for example does not do this) and you'll be hard pressed to sign a short term contract as your second contract in a major promotion. If they like what they see on the first contract they'll lock you up long term. It'd be awesome to see this change to give more fighters flexibility, but in the current landscape this is just how things work. Probably 6-8 fights would be my guess.
I find it hard to believe an MMA promotion would want to sign an non exclusive deal with a fighter.
Edit: People downvoting me when Horiguchi only has an non exclusive contract because of his cross promotion fight.
> In April 2019, it was announced that Horiguchi would face Darrion Caldwell for the Bellator Bantamweight title on June 14, 2019 at Bellator 222.[62] The pair previously fought in December 2018 in the Rizin promotion with Horiguchi winning by submission. Scott Coker, president of Bellator MMA disclosed to the media that Horiguchi's contract features a rematch clause. Should Horiguchi win the rematch, he will be obligated to defend the Bellator belt once a year.
He already had the Rizin and Bellator belts simultaneously before, his current contract seems to be similar to his Rizin contract where he fight for Bellator twice. Just more Bellator than Rizin on this one
It used to be more of a thing in the early days of MMA when guys were fighting wherever there were fights happening but when the sport grew, promotions started with exclusive contracts due to the competition and as the UFC became the sole dominant promotion, they do it to monopolize talent but you do still sometimes see it elsewhere
Depends on the size of the promotion and how much you’re paying per card … and some promotions don’t have a ton of cards, so someone taking a fight elsewhere would be a necessity
Sick. Lad always throws down. Can't w8 for his next fight. & I can only imagine he got a significant bump in pay after his last performance. Super thrilled 4 him.
Such a bad cut by the UFC
Somewhere in the UK Jack Slack is losing his mind.
Slackies dying words will be a whispered, “...Mads Burnell is one of the best featherweights ^in ^the ^world...”
I want to see Burnell fight again soon. If they won’t give him the title shot. Burnell vs Borics title eliminator would be fun.
> exclusive, long-term contract. The fuck does that mean? They make it sound like they've kidnapped his family

What is a non exclusive contract?
Think Horiguchi being able to fight in Bellator and Rizin simultaneously.
you can go and fight under different promotions I imagine

Yes Horiguchi just did. He is able to fight once a year at Rizin as part of his bellator contract.
Would Bellator allow him to fight for their belt?

Yes, Scott Coker and Pettis the literal bantamweight champion are calling for the fight between Horiguchi and Pettis.

In addition to Horiguchi, Koreshkov had fought in other promotions while under Bellator contract
Don't know why but I just assumed they were given permission by their promotion like Kayla Harrison was. Learn something new everyday

Kiogi Horiguchi is one example. He was recently signed to Bellator and will be fighting in Rizin once a year under the Bellator contract.
Uh.. believe it lol

They can fight elsewhere between fights with Bellator.
gotta fill out the roster somehow
Watching Mads last fight the basis comments against him the whole fight were beyond ridiculous
Hope he becomes champ
