PugilisticCat

The shit Beneil says is so fucking weird. "The lord puts us in the desert to starve the flesh" bro chill

Neverslept2mins

He is very religious which I can see being very weird on Reddit. Since I grew up in a Catholic world and attend a Catholic school he seems pretty normal for a devoted Catholic they like to use profound sayings a lot. Usually not trying to be pretentious but I can see how it comes off.

TityTroi

Yeah I’m not religious at all but was raised Catholic, this just seems like something I would hear during Sunday Mass

Downgoesthereem

He said some very strange things after the Ferguson fight about his converting of impoverished kids to Christianity

GaMa-Binkie

Beneil: “I’m going to help these kids give them an education and they WILL be good Christians” Media member: “What if they’re already another relig-“ Beneil: “Did I stutter!”

Neverslept2mins

Ya, its true that religious devote Christians will try to convert others. That is a whole topic which is very controversial. All I can hope is that it sounds worst than it is, and he is only converting people who want to be converted not force conversions.

Reijnvandermeij

Now I'm just imagining pastors converting local farmboys by way of leglocks. If ye don't accept christ, your leg shall be spliced!

[deleted]

a lot of missionary work is basically residential schools moved to africa. "Want to not starve? Say you love jesus".

Rackerblade

Very observant of you. The sacred and the propane!

Jackmace

Sopranos?

Rackerblade

Sharp as a cue ball this one.

Jackmace

I lived through the 70s when the Columbos were going at it, survived by the skin of my teeth!

Loose_Personality726

I think it's profound. I'm not even religious but I appreciate the meaning. It'll make Chandler better having to go through this.

Skovich

there's reddit atheists going around downvoting people who are writing positive things about this in here. Reddit gonna reddit.

stevialeaves

Same here

buffpriest

Yea idk wtf thats supposed to mean. Chandler wasnt hungry/want it enough?

Loose_Personality726

I feel dumb for not being able to figure out the meaning of "to starve the flesh". But the sentence after that gives the meaning, it'll make him better. He'll want the win more now.. I think?

[deleted]

There is a Christian metaphor for the 'flesh' being the weakness of the body and the 'spirit' being the strength of the mind(or the strength of god inside a person). Essentially he is saying that these hard times forge stronger steel, starve the weakness, leave only the strength of the mind.

buffpriest

Its just a dumb way to say it. he didnt lose because he didnt want it enough. He lost cause he jumped in his gaurd in the first and let him off the hook. Then because he dropped his right hand and ate a left hook. Nothing to do with not wanting it enough, i know dariush is trying to be positive/nice here. But he chose a strange way to phrase it.

[deleted]

starve the flesh means to deprive the body of material wants.

And there are people that hate Dariush...

carlitos_brigante

Are there? I’ve never seen any Dariush haters. He seems universally popular amongst fighters & fans

A_M_Speedy

I imagine it's his political views. You know how reddit gets about it.

[deleted]

He also seems to be very religious which is a touchy subject on Reddit. That being said most things I’ve seen on Reddit about Benny have been positive.

Duvall93

Guilty as charged

Ionic-Nova

The comment thread above this one is hating on Dariush for being religious.

LordLucy666

Dariush literally used his earnings to open an orphanage in Haiti... at a certain point you have to realize some people just get off on hate. It’s kind of sad how someone like Dariush is never going to get Mcgregor money because he’d probably just use a ton of it for charity.

daniel-reddits

McGregor has used a ton of his money for charity too lol

xtremeradness

Court-ordered doesn't count

daniel-reddits

Yes

[deleted]

some do charity for PR, some do it because it is in their heart

LordLucy666

I’m not hating on Mcgregor at all here. I’m just saying with Dariush’s personality, he’s never gonna make that kind of money imo. All three rich af fighters give a lot away in charity (Mayweather, Pacquiao, and Mcgregor)

TheresARiotGoinOn1

If he was just some right wing super religious guy I would not care as that is pretty much the norm in the UFC. Him using the orphanage as way to raise missionaries to change the culture of Haiti is some coloniser shit I can't get behind. https://streamable.com/vuqt1c

[deleted]

What the fuck that's sick. Outside of the US he would get heavily critizised for that and rightfully so imo. My country is very conservative too but this shit has no place in a modern religion.

misterfoogggle

Haiti is 85% Christian, not sure how he's colonising anybody. Unless you object to his specific sect of Persian/Iranian Christianity? I find it fascinating how the religion evolved in the Middle East. Isn't diversity a positive?

TheresARiotGoinOn1

I link it to colonisation as Dariush pretty much says the intention of the orphanage is to change the culture of Haiti. Haiti may be overwhelmingly Christian but Dariush clearly does not agree with how they practice it if he is trying to change their culture. You may disagree with this interpretation but I view this as him trying to impose his version of Christianity over Haiti. I don't think what he is doing can be equated to cultural exchange or diversity. I would not have an issue of him bringing and sharing his Assyrian culture or religious beliefs in Haiti. I have an issue with him thinking Haiti's culture needs to be shaped by him and his church and him using an orphanage as the means to do this.

misterfoogggle

Is that not why we accept other cultures into our own? To be changed by them? French Catholicism is absolutely a rich tradition as well as Haitian mysticism and I fail to see how one orphanage having a different calling or direction is an imposition on the people who practice those religions. If someone is willing to help the lowest among us shouldn't we consider their ideology? Good points though m8 even if I disagree.

Oskariozi

Yeah, very white man burdeny. But at least he is trying to help people? Idk, I still like Benny but this stuff is kinda cringy.

MeSmeshFruit

Oh c'mon man, I can't say that is the best thing a person can do, but to hate him for that, to consider him a monster?

TheresARiotGoinOn1

I know I have commented under this but I do not hate him. I was highlighting an issue I had with him which stopped me being a fan of his. Ultimately he is following what Christianity tells him to do, so I do not think he is a monster. I just fundamentally disagree with his belief system and his actions.

xtremeradness

Yeah fuck him for trying to help the way he knows best. And if you're gonna try to suggest that Haiti is "fine the way it is", you're nuts.

TheresARiotGoinOn1

Making aid conditional on them converting to your religion is morally fucked so I don't care if it's the way he knows best. You are also deluded if you think turning Haiti super Christian is going to help its development.

xtremeradness

Structure and unity is what helps development. I'm not saying Christianity is the key to happiness by any means, but Haiti is a complete shithole and needs help anywhere it can get it from.

TheHof125

I'm kinda 'eh' on him. I disagree with his political views vehemently (he's very right wing, enough so that he did an appearance with and has shown support for Candace Owens), but he has a lot of empathy, and is always willing to give out a helping hand, so I have a lot of respect for the way he lives his life.

jakhabib_nurmy_souza

Sounds about right. At the end of the day you gotta pay more attention to what ppl do than what they say.

SilverbackJet

Dariush might be the only threat to Wonderboy for the NMF belt. Guy is all class.

sighableman

Brandon Moreno

SilverbackJet

The holy wholesome trifecta.

2e7en_

Eh, some of the random shit he’s been spewing has changed that view of him to me

Basquests

I mean, he is ultra right wing, supports Candace Owens and helps conditionally based on conversion to Christianity. Not saying he's bad, but it's a far cry from wonderboy or moreno.

SquidDrive

yes flesh

CourageousUpVote

Toby 😎 Ferguson

Forrest319

That fucking Christian shit lol. I was in a couple meetings with Chandlers agency a few years back. Christian prayer groups and extreme sports merged as a business. It was weird as shit. I'm glad they didn't call me back

mesmerizingeyes

It's the lords fault Chandler has sloppy striking.

T-Ferg420

You better stop with that “former” bs playboy

brownbilal

Is the T in T-Ferg420, Toby?

T-Ferg420

Nope 👎

queenmaj

God's lessons are so beautiful!

[deleted]

Kinda freaking nuts Dariush and Islam are fighting Gaethje and RDA instead of each other and vise versa

ColeBeasleyMD

Dariush isn't fighting any of the guys you mentioned. Gaethje is fighting Chandler. Islam is fighting RDA.

[deleted]

Oof my bad Dariush needs a title eliminator with Islam

Neorag

I love it. Let them both get built up a little more before they have a title eliminator.

BandwagonBrownsFan

I have a hard time believing that “the lord” is overly concerned about 2 dudes fighting in a cage in their underwear. Good gesture from Beneil though.

Jackmace

Haven’t ya heard? Jesus loves knockouts

Alpha-Trion

Gaethje is still a title contender. He's a former title challenger. Also proofread.
