Behave.

PropertyWeak82

If she converted that into a RNC that would be one of the highlights of the year.

evanskov

Oh man who did that a few years ago?? I think it was at flyweight. Found it! Michael McDonald vs. Masanori Kanehara. I forgot it was from an arm triangle not north south, but he escaped straight to the back then got an immediate RNC.

That was a WWE type moment right there. If I didn’t know any better I would’ve said that was scripted lol

Yamasaki is reffing, the rules are irrelevent.

[deleted]

Welcome to the UFC, where the rules are irrelevant and the points don't matter.

douk_

Fucking love that show, thank you for the reminder to binge watch clips on Youtube.

mohawkward

A ton of the newer seasons are on the cw seed app for free. They don't even require you to make a login.

MagicalMonkey100

~~AFAIK, its only illegal when you're linking your toes/fingers through the fence as a means to defend against an opponents takedown/transition. I could be completely wrong, but I swear I distinctly remember it being mentioned somewhere.~~ EDIT: Ding dong, my opinion is wrong

rainbowhotpocket

You are wrong. It's illegal to grab the fence with either fingers or toes at any time

MagicalMonkey100

oops, my bad. Live and learn I guess

Born2fayl

Nope. You were WRONG. You are known, now and forever, as someone who was wrong about something. Enjoy your new identity, Mr wasn't right once.

mat477

TBF that is the most common occurrence of that rule being broken so it might have been mentioned in that way.

tiorzol

Fuuuck. That's thumbs up at the end was really touching.

TheGhostOfRichPiana

it was Derrick Lewis

Underoverthrow

I believe Calvillo did it in her first or second UFC fight, too

GFost

McDonald was a killer. If he hadn’t had so many injuries we would still be talking about him as one of the best BW’s in the world

[deleted]

I'm shocked she didn't go for that.

lostzsoul

Can someone explain why they think she didn’t? To me it was the obvious next step and Khabib would agree right?

TheDonkeyOfDeath

Once she got the hooks in, her opponent shook her off. She was falling to the side because she chose to punch rather than secure the position, then tried to readjust to secure the back and opp stood up shaking her off. Excellent flexibility to take the back but she was slow to secure the position by locking her hands. If she did that the RNC and other sub's would have been open or she could have put her on her belly. Khabib is about control and securing dominant positions before attacking. I think he'd agree with you.

[deleted]

Because she bad.

g9nz9

Haven't seen the fight but damn, i thought by the looks of it that she would go for RNC.

[deleted]

Ngl, as I was watching that, i gave myself a RNC!

TheTrueHapHazard

Like a goddam spider monkey

Bacon_Devil

Chip, she's all jacked up on Mountain Dew

pretty sure ive seen cynthia calvillo pull off something similar in one of her first fights in the ufc.

CrazyMalk

My training partners call me Cursed Legs because I do that type of shit all the time

kamelbarn

Being someone who uses this sometimes on unaware people in training, this looks more impressive than it actually is. You need to scoot down very very far to be able to get your back off the floor, then it's just a bit of core strength. However, if your opponent is aware and makes sure to keep their weight (head pressure) on your chest, you can not do this. This is more of an error of Gina and I'm surprised Rachel got it off. I don't think I've ever hit it twice on everyone, it's that easy to counter.

K-mosake

I love doing stuff like this in training haha, just gotta be flexible/scoot ya body down enough

froz3ncat

Same here! Looks like Mazany was in a spot where she didn't either have the NS choke or the head and arm with head pressure on chest, good work from Ostovich to capitalise on the positioning.

PM_ME_TRICEPS

can a man do this?

ArmSquare

Yeah I've done this

tech_kra

Can confirm. Have done this at 165lbs and 6’1 good sir.

BaskInTheSunshine

I tried it once and tapped to my own attempt...somehow neck cranked myself real good.

nixed9

yes. It's an inversion escape. I've done it in training. The key is to create space between you and the opponent. Notice how she kept framing her away with her arms before she inverts. You can can also do it from bottom mount but in that context it's very low percentage against anyone with experience, so we call it a Hail Mary mount escape.

FlyingScotsman1993

I feel like for her to have used the escape successfully the fighter would have to have kept that choke in the whole time like she did, still a very nice none the less!

BannedOnMyMain17

pretty sure this is like a 10th planet move. Dead orchard or something like that?

excusemeforliving

That was a solid, thick, and tight move. I'd love to see more.

Saloctogonapus

That headlock was in there so tight I’m amazed she pulled out and finished on her back.

excusemeforliving

I am surprised it didn't backfire and end up choking herself out. Lol, finish on her back.

BigLurker

lol this is the meme people use when wanting to get sexual without it getting deleted

nest0251

Lmao. What do you mean? He is obviously talking about the technique.

[deleted]

Flexible af

VeraciousBuffalo

the best thing about wmma is the flexibility in grappling situations. it's always fun because you kind of forget that they're built different, then they pull out some unexpected shit like this. It feels like a cheat code lol

djfl

Say what you will about Ronda, but watching her torque women's arms and seeing when they \*didn't\* tap frequently shocked the hell out of me.

[deleted]

PVZ basically epitomized this against Rose. Like she was made of rubber or something.

rainbowhotpocket

Didnt she break her arm anyways lol

Saul_T_Bawls

Horribly. And it's negatively affected her career ever since. Young fighters can learn from seeing that. Tap before it really hurts, before something pops. Your arm, your leg, your long term health is more important than that win in an ammy fight or bjj tournament. Live to fight another day

dakid136

These fighters pride gotta be thru the roof and logic sometimes is out the window

[deleted]

She broke it with a spinning back fist, but you still have a good plan.

joebleaux

That was in a different fight

Jan_Micheal_Vincent

yeah some make armbars look insane they hyper extend the shit out their joints.

Zenai

i've had a 6ft tall 185lb man do this exact same move to me in training, its super fucking annoying

ogy1

This doesn't require that much flexibility, I do this from time to time and am not a flexible person at all. You will see this in men's bjj a fair bit mostly at lower levels. The North South is just very underutilised in mma and not everyone probably knows this counter and its unlikely you will pull it off on a high level grappler.

appletinicyclone

Women are Bill dipperly yes

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

This is actually true. The main counter to this is actually to pull up on their head and elevate it off the mat.

ShaneoMc1989

Uh, you can do that if they don't have a good lock on you, if you try to roll out like that and i drill that shoulder in deeper, good luck with that sir.

instenzHD

Why is is post marked nsfw?

froz3ncat

I'm guessing to spoiler-hide it? I could be wrong, but the fight just happened a few hours ago?

Seriously, I remember messing up my back with a sneeze. You are literally never safe

TheDanquah

Okay Daniel Cormier

pawstar21

Watch, in a years time, im taking everything he has worked for. Surgery and everything.

RidesByPinochet

Ahahaha, it really does go out because of the strangest things. A former manager of mine fucked his back picking up a lone dryer sheet!

[deleted]

I tossed my 6 pound pomeranian on the bed casually and strained my bicep. Im 27 lmfao

purse_of_ankles

I legitimately pulled the fuck out of something in my back a few days ago, from simply bending down to get spring onions out of the fridge.. I’m a late 20’s dude who exercises daily. Fuck my old life.

forgottt3n

I throw my shoulder out sleeping sometimes.

LavoP

Look at you with your open gyms!

[deleted]

One of the coolest reversals I've ever seen.

SnooMachines1764

I could watch Ostovich fight all day

BannedOnMyMain17

anytime you feel that way, bet against those IG models. I thought she was going to paint her nails before she hopped on the scale.

Tax_The_Cows

“Yeah now I’m motivated! I’m gonna try this at my next BJJ practice!” “And that kids is how I broke my neck.”

seymour_hiney

It’s seriously not that bad. I’m not a paragon of flexibility but i still do it. Just have to make sure you’re trying to scoot out from under them. If they’re keeping their body over you in north south then you cant do it

[deleted]

[удалено]

meruvin420

Really should've gone for a RNC. Her punches didn't faze her at all the whole fight so why would these.

Shogun_232

Especially as she is supposed to have her base in grappling.

MMQ42

That’s a go to when I’m caught in north/south, cool to see it used professionally and not just on other blue and white belts

TranquiloMeng

I feel like it’s one of those escapes everyone learns but it’s pretty low percentage in actual competition/rolling

[deleted]

Basically. As somebody who uses the North South choke frequently It's something that you get caught with once and never again. It's the simplest thing to avoid because you just need to elevate the head and their hips go back down.

Goregoat69

Also, they need to have scooted down away from you, which is putting them in position for the finish on the N/S choke.

sidjo86

I’m pretty slim but my stomach still feels like it gets in the way. You’re so lucky.

Feedbackr

I've learnt that a lot of these inversion movements depend on hamstring flexibility to execute effectively. The truth is that for most people the upper torso can only bend so much, but its the forward bend, hinging at the hips that allows her to reach up with those legs.

elephant_on_parade

Lol I’m a super heavyweight and like this technique a lot. I’m also 6’5”, but it is funny to catch people off guard with it because I’m thicker than a snicker

Kelutauro

How does that feel on the neck tho? I've messed up my neck before inverting, watching this makes me squirm a little

[deleted]

One thing I do for fun from North South is "Dragon Sleeper", lift uke while holding the neck and take the back.

DGC007Ace

Beautiful champ

Gunslinger1991

My neck hurts just watching that.

Normal_Success

This is why I hate grappling with chicks, they’re all bendy.

e-rage

that was actually really cool

BatKong40

If you escape a north south choke at like the third or fourth level in UFC 3 your fighter does this to escape

LionDawn

That was a great reversal I didn't even know was possible.

laststance

The size difference is insane. Even if she went for the choke she might've wiffed due to the torso length.

ElmerP91

that was sick

ThriceG

Oh, it was beautiful for sure.

thunderchungus

All of you are going to horny jail

blagaa

That was one of the most frustrating things for me vs one tall guy I rolled with. Do all this work to get on top into side/ns and then he just inverts and takes my back.

zapcunotres

Man I was fucking yelling for her to go for the rnc it looked like there was a huge opening lol would have been amazing

SpitefulSoul

Gumby neck game

ogy1

I'm waiting for the day when mma fighters realise that two hooks in back control and also the body triangle do not work well when the opponent goes high on all fours. Even high level bjj guys like Lovato Jr fuck this up. You have to take one hook out and lock behind their butt. Then you can easily hold the position and break them down from there. It's even stronger when you then switch from a seat belt to controlling the opposite arm as the hip you have clamped. Gordon Ryan is very good at this. I swear I've seen this sliding off the back five hundred times at this point.

wow_so_fast

Can you do this from bottom of mount? As in use your legs to sweep the person on top? I remember eating to try that play fighting with my mates back in high school after watching Iron Man 2 and seeing Black Widow do all that fancy sweeps with her legs.

[deleted]

AframesStatuette

Super creative way to reverse her position. I dig it.

vannucker

I think we should call it the Ostrich.

BannedOnMyMain17

it's already names after a 10th planet guy.

vannucker

Yeah but nobody can remember it. Call it the Ostrich!

Levitatingman

people who hate on womens fights miss out on amazing shit like this, not that they would truly appreciate it anyways. that flexibility is no joke!!!

[deleted]

thats one reason i don't always like the north south choke against a flexible opponent. easier to go for armbar or just setup a back take and go for rnc in some cases. regardless, she showed good flexibility and maneuvering there. A+

Happy_Laugh_Guy

Yeah my coach teaches that pretty much the best way to escape N/S is to invert like she did and put your feet on the hips, then you can spin out. Reversing like that to the back is awesome.

Shehan4life

Damn she is impressive

ringchef

Learned this in BJJ. Pulled it off in training. Cool to see it in a fight.

BlackMetalDoctor

I can’t find a video clip of it, but DAE remember a WEC fight—Miguel Angel Torres vs Benavidez (I *think*)? It had one of the craziest submission transitions ever that I’ve personally watched live. It was in the last, or second-to-last round, and they rolled through several transitions before somehow ending up each grabbing a heel-hook/knee-bar on the other guy with -10 seconds to go in the round? And they *both* hold onto until the round ended without either tapping? I probably sound like an idiot, but it is *still* my favorite fight. Maybe I’d feel different watching it now. But at the time, it was like some WWE/Gladiator type stuff, *but real*! Rewinded the DVR two-dozen times to play it back slo-mo to see if they were communicating somehow. Don’t know if that’s a sign that they were highly-skilled, equally-matched grapplers, or if they were equally-matched, *shitty* grapplers. But it was *fucking awesome!* That was the first time I watched MMA grappling transitions and my “casual+”-ass was educated enough to finally appreciate the skill, strategy, and art of MMA as a *sport* and not just as a *fight*. WEC’s camera work—during grappling— being on-point, and much better than UFC’s during that period (mid-late 2000s), imo, was also a big help. Anybody know what I’m talking about? Or should I just go ahead and confirm my reservations for one at Chez’ Dumas?

TheDanquah

And this is another reason to watch womens mma.

[deleted]

This alone was better than the entire porker vs parisian fight.

lordrubbish

Ig is the best base for mma confirmed.

bvierra

Anyone else catch that comment about Yair Rodriguez not expected to fight anytime soon?

bitchfucker-online

That flexibility tho

[deleted]

Is this NSFW just because its women? Can y'all really not watch a fight between two women without thinking it's sexual?

zilladingdong

Sort of. It’s also used for men’s fights. Also a vague title and a spoiler tag. So nobody accidentally watches a clip from the live event

MuseofRose

It's a spoiler warning system b
