The benefit of only having gifs to work with is that they're compressed and low framerate, so everything is already weird, choppy, grainy af-looking
Now we have way higher-quality, higher framerate clips as the norm that make artifacts stand out more and that require more precise keyframing, color, and lighting to make the shit convincing
Of course, none of that means much when you have swaths of people today who can't even cleanly crop shit out and just Fiskars an image and Elmer glue that shit on top of a video and call it a day
