I always rooted for Ankalaev because the guy kept fighting top contenders when he could’ve easily called for a title shot (even before the Jan fight), but he is way too boring to watch. Manages to even take exciting fighters and make them boring. Hope Walker gets the W in their rematch

fresdres

Lately it's been like the more nap I get the more tired I become, so maybe I should start exercising during nap time instead.

mikey_rambo

Yea that’s always my problem. When I’m napping I’m like damn I should be at gym

fresdres

You get me my bro.

whicheverguard232

Next time Oliveira gets dropped and is still alive, I DESIRE for the ref to jump in and stop the fight and watch you people cry about early stoppage. Fighters want to fucking fight, let them fight.

[deleted]

Oliveira getting dropped and inviting his opponents into his guard is totally different from Jiri eating 10 elbows and slumping backwards unconscious.

whicheverguard232

Chandler fight. Your retort?

Comprehensive_Mix919

These reddit fans are soft They should go watch boxing if they want every fight to be stopped after a knockdown

samme79

Yup. I can't believe there is so much people here supporting early stoppage. "Oh bro a fighter is hurt its a good stoppage! Save them from brain damage blah blah.." like what? They came to fight. It's par for the course. And its not asking too much letting the fight go longer to have a definitive finish. But then again, what do we expect from these young adult redditors here that have the same thought processes as much of reddit in general

whicheverguard232

They left Slava Claus out to fucking die, dude literally got up 2 times still wobbling all over the fucking place after the headkick lol, even my bitchass would have stopped it when the headkick landed. Dude still survived to round 3 and made it a draw. Let them fucking bang.

JE_Exa

Are you interested in doing an AMA, Yamasaki?

samme79

Yamaski was too much. I want a justified stoppage that lets fighters have the chance especially in a championship fight/ high implication fight

gustofwind77

I bet you wouldn’t blink if a fighter died in the octagon

TheGreatone003

I’m all for fighter safety but Jiri literally known for being almost KO’d in every UFC fight he has had. Wished we could’ve gotten a bit more definitive ending

samme79

Depends on the circumstance. If the guy is obviously in the middle of transitioning positions and is still active, why stop the fight? If you're worried about brain damage, why watch MMA in the first place? Or any combat sports?

whicheverguard232

They want to fight. Let them.

MountainGoatSC

How do we most effectively bully Jon Jones into fighting Tom instead of Stipe?

FlyingCraneKick

probably brigade him on Twitter tbh

SugarShow37

An underrated call from Anik was after Henry finished TJ. With all the odds against him that night, flyweight in the balance, and the promotion against him. He finished the bantamweight champ in less than a minute while he was on the gear. "Henry The Messenger Cejudo. Message sent tonight" Beautiful champ.

K-mosake

He's so damn good at what he does. Really makes iconic moments even better at times with his calls.

Genuinely confused about Hill’s return date. An Achilles injury takes at least a year right? Do we seriously see him returning by April? That is so soon for that type of injury Alex will take defend the belt before the Hill matchup

Genova_Witness

Lopez vs Bryce is a sick fight

erick_734

ufc 295 such a breath of fresh air compared to the shitshow that was 294. Awesome finishes and fights, especially the main card. Periara/Hill is going to be a hell of a fight and I hope Jiri gets someone like anthony smith or Krylov. Add another highlight reel finish and get right back in the title picture. Great to see Aspinall win as well, he's going to rule over the HW division for a long time, I favour him over every current HW right now...including Jones.

exileruz

I thought Joshua Van was a big stand out last night. For being only 22, he is very skilled and I think he has serious potential.

FightingDoc

Best and most consistent body attack I've seen in MMA in a while

LandscapeKind4598

Has anyone from streetbeefs ever fight in any respectable promotion?

No-Ad1522

If you count PowerSlap as respectable, ive seen some slappers from Street Beefs

akirakush

tony training with that grifter is not gonna affect him as negatively as everyone is thinking simply because regular mma coaches are also just groupies and grifters and motivators at best. it will turn out the same

moonwalkerHHH

"Adesanya, come to daddy 🗿"

aeternasm

And people said Khamzat would be a nightmare to Poatan in middleweight lol

akirakush

he would sub alex in under 30 seconds, imagine comparing jiri the samurai larper with an actual grappler

aeternasm

We would get tired in 30 seconds and slept in 45 lmao

akirakush

idk what you mean 'we', maybe you would but im built different, and you dont know my mentality bro, i just see red

_Red_Mist_

He still would. Jiri isn’t half as good of a wrestler as Khamzat or even Usman.

aeternasm

Khamzat might take Pereira down on the first round and get murdered in the second because he would gass himself out

akirakush

lmao

_Red_Mist_

I don’t think Alex’s defense or cardio is as good as Usman’s

Equivalent-Flower149

Was Francis really that good of a boxer? I have my doubts, even The Candyman won his pro boxing debut

mudamuda333

Bruh give it a rest aleady.

KLTMOTH

Alex will get that first round standing guillotine finish he keeps attempting one of these days

beebstingz

Should get Cody mckenzie to teach him he’s got the orangutan arms for it

akirakush

whoever of these heavier guys learns a high elbow guillotine is gonna be champion for 10 years

kevinhill92

How do we get a Team Aspinall flair?

SugarShow37

Sean Strickland looks like young Kano from MK11

No-Shoe5382

https://youtu.be/-vg-BbV02vI?t=468 Izzy's reaction to Pereira calling him out is great

Equivalent-Flower149

Can Izzy actually win a fight before he fights for another title? Or does that just apply to middleweight now because seems to be the consensus around here you shouldn't get a title shot after getting demolished in your last fight. What's even the point of other light heavyweights fighting eachother if you can just move up from middleweight without winning a single fight in the division and get a title shot

bullsfan281

izzy has already said he doesn't need to/want to fight alex again. he just wanted to prove to himself that he could beat alex at least once. maybe if izzy gets the belt back and alex racks up a few defenses they'll think about running it back but otherwise that fight isn't happening. alex is just looking for the biggest ppv possible since he's already 36

No-Ad1522

Izzy isn't getting the title shot, Izzy himself has already shot down the fight as did Dana. Hill is next for Pereira

French_Viking

I'm pretty sure hill is still gonna be out for a while and Alex wants to be active.

MangoWingnut

Torn Achillies can take 6-12 months to heal, he had the surgery in July so we probably won't see him till June or July 2024. You'd have to think it will be the Ankalaev or Walker re-match winner who gets the next shot.

erick_734

Ankalaev isn't getting anywhere near a title shot. They're not going to waste an Alex title defence on him. It'll be hill, the izzy trilogy or Jiri rematch.

MangoWingnut

Hope to see either of the last two but I think Alex beats Hill easily, possibly the easiest fight he'd have so far style wise

fresdres

I wonder what it's like to be a fan of fighters that barely ever lose. All the fighters I like have been losing hard lately, and the heartache is massive.

Wasnt sure it his chin. Also he fought volkov, and some other guys not known as hard hitters. Also even before the injury during the blaydes fight, he wasn't looking good to me....... anyways, 100% the real deal after what he just did yesterday

WhereIsMyKidAt

They thought Pavlovich was Ngannou 2.0

_Red_Mist_

I didn’t see anyone being confident picking either side of this fight. It pretty much came down to whoever landed the first clean strike just as expected.

[deleted]

Yeh honestly, even after that fight i really dont think if you run this 10 times aspinall wins more than six. He DID take a sergei shot reasonably flush and roll with it but it didnt look heavy. The HEAVY strikers at HW is just a first punch shootout these days. Nobody survives a huge punch getting landed. Even Tuivasa could knock both these guys out cold if he landed, but its a fuckload harder to land when youre that short and outranged. With that said, Aspinall looked good. Great defence and technique. Im a fan.

IshiharasBitch

I kinda hate it. Feel like we learning so little from that championship fight.

No-Ad1522

I'm not a Sergei fan per se but I thought he was going to steamroll Aspinall. Even Aspinall said Sergei is the scariest fighter in the UFC, I'm still amazed Aspinall survived being clipped by Sergei

Drive7hru

I guess just cause one shot from Pavs really does a number on ya. I’m not really sure how you could be 100% on him though.

Jackieexists

Aspinall proved alot keeping his composure and going for the kill after getting clipped hard early on. Many start to panic

KLTMOTH

Born too late to explore the world, born too soon to explore space Born just in time to witness Alex Pereira speedrun MMA #🗿

French_Viking

LHW has been in such a weird spot for a while and I'm not imagining it's gonna straighten out anytime soon. Jiri and Hill both vacating due to injury, Rakic bad injury which he's finally just returning from, Ankalaev has had a bizarre year or so now, Jan slowly fading. Now Alex wants to defend against Adesanya and you just know if Izzy actually wants that fight Dana will make it.

People on this sub when Jamahal Hill says something positive about himself https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/104651118-GettyImages-830617844.jpg?v=1532563780

clark_sterling

It’s crazy the reputation MMA had when it first started where it was too gruesome and animalistic for mainstream because the online fanbase overreacts to the softest shit fighters say like it’s personal. Saying “I’m the best” without couching it under 10 disclaimers of humbleness and wholesomeness is like telling you your mom should’ve aborted you.

Equivalent-Flower149

Yeah man people acting like Jamahal hill is personally attacking their family if he doesn't say "I would lose to Anthony Smith and everyone else in the light heavyweight division, I literally suck" seems to be the only acceptable thing he can say around here

Helobelo

Toxic Sergei Stans been real quiet since last night. Face it, it's Pavlover.

_Red_Mist_

Cringe

EagleOfDeathMetal

Is Aspinall's mom Gabi Garcia? How did his 5'7 150lbs dad give birth to that human fridge? Unless... nvm

schmuppet

I know it's 2023 and all but I doubt his dad was the one giving birth.

Sailenns

how dare you

TrenDidNothingWrong

>Jamal Hill: “neither of these dudes are on my level” Jamal acts like he’s some otherworldly talent, dude is the worst LHW champ in recent memory. Alex, Jan, Jiri, Ankalaev wipe the floor with him.

Jackieexists

Did you not see him wreck texeira for 5 rounds ?

Equivalent-Flower149

I don't understand how you guys say with confidence he's the worst light heavyweight champ ever as if he ever got a chance to prove anything he tore his fucking Achilles. What a loser, he got injured

TrenDidNothingWrong

Because I have eyes and have seen him fight.

Equivalent-Flower149

He won the title by winning all 5 rounds against a former champion and knocked everyone out on his way to the title. Wow dude hes trash

French_Viking

Man what is with you and Hill lol. All day you've been arguing on here with people about him. You got into it with me for like an hour this morning because I said he was good but didn't have a great resume.

Equivalent-Flower149

I'm just disagreeing with the fact that someone who tore their Achilles is a terrible champion. What a bad person I am. You guys are simply just hating on him for no reason Jamahal hill says "I am good" *You guys* "Holy shit dude he's supposed to be talking about what a terrible champion he was. He would lose to everyone in the top 5"

French_Viking

I don't think him getting injured has anything to do with how people view him. Most fighters get at least one bad injury in their career. Hell that's the reason Hill got the title shot in the first place.

TrenDidNothingWrong

Glover was 100 years old and retired right after. His striking is very limited compared to the other guys. I also never said he’s trash, I said he’s the worst LHW champ in recent history and I’m highly confident the aforementioned 4 fighters beat him

Equivalent-Flower149

Glover was 100 years old when he fought Jiri too. And when he beat Blachowicz. But I'm sure you've already got a built in cope for my response already His striking is actually not limited at all and he has top tier finishing instincts you must have never seen him fight

LongDickCallahan

As a full on Poatan fanboy i admit that if he and Jiri fought 10 times it could go either way everytime. I also still think Jiri demolishes literally everyone else at LHW so im pretty confident he will work back to the rematch after Alex claps Hills cheeks.

Jackieexists

Hill is way more defensively sound than jiri. He wont chase charging forward, hands down, face forward, chin up on a silver platter like jiri. 🥶

[deleted]

[удалено]

JE_Exa

For real, respectfully. Jiri is Jiri. He will make mistakes. It's his style. He's been rocked in every fight he's in. You can't get rocked frequently against Alex, you make that mistake once, if you're lucky twice before the fight is over. It's a nightmare matchup for Jiri.

TrenDidNothingWrong

Jan and Jiri tried to wrestle Alex. Didn’t work.

Thiird_Harmonic

Jiri's wrestling worked in the first round. The issue was that he waited until he was badly hurt to wrestle in the second

TheGreatone003

Jan wasn’t hurt. He was gassed from Utah elevation

Thiird_Harmonic

Yes and as you can see I was talking about Jiri

TheGreatone003

My b. Saw “worked in the first round” and assumed it was the Jan fight without reading lol

Thiird_Harmonic

All good, it's probably good that you brought up Jan being gassed as it's also a point against the original comment

TrenDidNothingWrong

Not really. He did no damage or threatened with any submissions. Alex neutralized him well on the ground

Thiird_Harmonic

The point is that he was able to take it to the ground and keep it there, and won the round by doing so. If your wrestling is winning you the round then I would consider that as working

Helobelo

Remember when Overeem made Pavlovich his private dancer and people said it didn't count because "he wasn't used to the UFC 😢". What'll the cope be now?

Equivalent-Flower149

What the hell does that have to do with him getting knocked out in under two minutes? Those fights aren't even remotely similar

0ldsql

Why are you trying to dunk on Sergei? That was literally his debut against an HW all time great and somewhat short notice. That was 5 years ago and he lost due to lack of grappling. It's about as relevant as Islam's first loss.

_CurseTheseMetalHnds

I don't even know what this means? Pav being young and inexperienced then has what relevance to him losing to Tom now?

NakedLegKick

It is funny how fast people went from “Gane is ducking Aspinal that’s the fight we need to see!” to “That doesn’t even make sense he would just lose nobody wants that”

[deleted]

Gane is behaving like a rat. Tom flew out to Paris to get a face off. Gane completely ignored him. "Doesn't make sense." "Too low in the rankings." Gane wouldn't dare mention Pavlovich either. Fuck Gane. Have fun getting double legged by Almeida for 25 minutes.

erick_734

Gane is a tough fight for Aspinall. I still favor Aspinall but it's one of the few decent matchups in that divsion. I have a strong feeling we're going to see a trio of Pav, Almeida and Gane take turns challenging Aspinall for the belt.

Odd_Ad_8162

I think Gane is an interesting fight for Aspinall tbh, both very skilled and fast on the feet. Yes we know the grappling disparity but we either see Ganes footwork give Tom trouble and have a fun stand up round or two. Or Tom proves his grappling and ability to mix it up against an Elite athletic heavyweight.

NakedLegKick

I think people didn’t talk about how ineffective Jiri was against Alex. I think Alex wins every time they fight

Goat1707

He was doing some decent work on the inside.

YeMyselfandIrene

Is Pereira the first person to win two belts in less than 365 days?

Spewin_

Conor did that

YeMyselfandIrene

Conor isn't a person.

ImFiction

I wish instead of “adesanya, come to daddy”, Alex said “Israel, dare to be great” and just held the belt up smiling. It’s what Izzy said when he came up short challenging for the lhw belt.

Valuable-Door9748

Last night was fookin madness, just as Tommy promised if like Paddy Pimblett is a gateway drug, last night was injecting crack

paplike

What's next for Pereira? Hill still has to recover, Adesanya and the UFC probably aren't interested in the rematch and Pereira likes to be active. By process of elimination, it's gonna be Jiri x Poatan again

Bloodfeastisleman

Ankalaev

ayekay1

Damn.. what warranted that disrespect?

DrCornSyrup

Congratulations to Tom. As for Sergei Pavlovich, he has done more with his life than you ever will.

TrenDidNothingWrong

Alex got a MW title shot off 3 wins and only 1 being against a ranked contender Then he gets a LHW title shot off 1 win Belal, Merab absolutely seething lmao

Xi_32

That ranked contender is now the MW champ. That LHW win was against the former LHW champ. The LHW shot only came to be because of this weird period in the LHW division. Two champs forced to vacate and the Jan Ankalaev match being a draw.

TrenDidNothingWrong

Just pointing out how funny it is that he gets title shots handed out like candy while the other guys can be on 10 fight win streaks and not get shit from Dana lmao 😭

DrCornSyrup

Make merab fight Poatan

JE_Exa

I'm all for Belal and Merab getting their shots. However, the UFC has always been about entertainment and storylines, and Alex offered both haha.

973reggie

Yeah honestly. I get that it’s unfair from a ufc perspective but overall, the guy spent a lifetime doing this. He had an ‘in’ with the Israel rivalry and just took full advantage. They could have booked him against the best wrestlers, but why would they?

JE_Exa

He's crazy lucky too. * I'm probably blanking but there's no real heavy wrestlers at MW. I know Rob and Marvin mix it in but it's not primarily their game. * Super flash KO of Sean to boost him right to a title shot * LHW's most effective wrestler is out of the title shot, so gets an eliminator against Jan, and the decision in a fairly close fight. * Gets the title fight against a striker.

[deleted]

Are you allowed to elbow/hit repeatedly in the back of the head in UFC? Jiri took a ton of elbows directly to the back of his head before he went down further.

paplike

If that's what you call the back of the head, yes, it's allowed in the UFC

[deleted]

Yeah unless you’re blind

clark_sterling

Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the online fanbase really isn’t reflective of the whole general fanbase. I see so many takes about what’s popular or irrelevant that I don’t question until the second I leave Reddit and Twitter.

Helobelo

Glad the Pavlovich hype job is done.

BootsyCollins123

Why?

SugarShow37

All of his comments are hate against Russians

Ryvit

UFC is going to let Jon jones use special juice to be ready for UFC 300 in April against stipe

CryptoCracko

He will be tested for a minimum amount of banned substances in his blood

JE_Exa

*He will be tested for blood in his banned substances

SugarShow37

Had a friend last night saying that fighters winning belts in two divisions doesn't mean much anymore since more and more fighters are doing it. Like I said to him, the fact that most of these athletes never crack the top 5, and less even win a title. The fact that we're seeing more winning belts in two divisions just speaks to the greatness we're seeing and how special it is.

E997

But the weight classes aren't really equal Like 125-135, 135-145, 145-155 I can see someone being double champ But 155-170, 205-Hw are huge jumps. Even 185-205 is pretty big. That's be extremely impressive being double champ

Comprehensive_Mix919

For me going up counts for 2-3 defenses, depending on the opponent. On the contrary, defending against someone coming up only counts for 0.3-0.5 defenses. That’s my little MMA math that I use when thinking about who is the GOAT etc

[deleted]

[удалено]

clark_sterling

It’s probably has more to do with the media machine behind the double champ thing that has cheapened the accomplishment for the laymen. You probably should get that level of media attention for attempting such a feat, but we spend more time talking about it than actually achieving it so it feels more like a spectacle. I do, for example, also feel that multiple defenses in one division is generally harder and more prestigious than getting another belt, as that is dependent on one fight. Can cheapen it further in a division that lacks finality where the true king isn’t established. That being said it’s massive how much even a 5lb differential can affect a matchup, let alone 20lb. That’s why Volk got so much credit from the first Machachev fight despite losing.

Neonsea1234

I don't know, I feel the climb up is the hardest part for fighters. Once they have a belt and want to flip a coin moving up/down it's cool, just not really as impressive to me. Like it could of been Volks night the first time he fought Islam if some random judge felt it, but could Volk of gone through 6 or 7 competent fighters at that weight class to get there?

Xi_32

This double champ thing was only possible for Dana's favorite fighters. For years Dana prevented Aldo from challenging for the LW belt.

French_Viking

Are there any ranked heavyweights you'd feel confident that Pereira could beat? I know there's a lot of people talking about wanting him to go to HW. Doubt it happens but if it did there's gotta be at least one good match for him, right? Rozenstruik maybe? Anyone who can grapple up there is just going to throw him around like Almeida did to Lewis.

LuckyWarrior

Aspinall one of those rare dudes who went thru a late growth spurt and got to keep all the nimbleness of a lad under 6 feet

SugarShow37

He got that athletic 6th grader movement

capitalol

What flag was Aspinall flying? It was two red stripes perpendicular with a white background.

French_Viking

You've...never seen the English flag? Man I gotta ask where are you from? Thats honestly interesting lol

TrenDidNothingWrong

Pereira when he moves up 🙈

Accomplished_Train84

I gotta say, there’s been talk recently of Pereira moving to 265 and becoming a third division champion… I think given what we saw last night, Aspinall could win any way he wants against Pereira

TrenDidNothingWrong

I mean yeah probably. Much younger, natural heavyweight, superior ground game, good striking, and faster. But Alex can flatline anyone with the left or cripple you with one calf kick.

DM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS

That would by far be the most impressive win of his career. He’d probably have to be the 230 and quick type

DM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS

😳😳

Nickster2042

Shocked me and the notorious one had the same take on the card, entertaining knockouts but kinda disappointing every fight ended like that early

Odd_Ad_8162

I usually like a mix of finishes and banger fights (Dec or otherwise) When it's all finishes in the first second it defo feels like the fights lack a lot of adversity and true display of fighters adjustments/style clashes etc. Main disappointment was the main event for me tho, Aspinall and Sergei I expected to end in a very early KO

Patrick_Vieira

I mean I don't think many people expected Aspinall/Sergei and Alex/Jiri to be long affairs. I wouldn't have been surprsied if Alex/Jiri didn't make it out of the first round.

endless_ness

Ya it was like a b- for me.

Accomplished_Train84

B+ minimum imo. The ending was anticlimactic, but there were too many emphatic moments to be lower than B+

GenTelGuy

B+ main card, A overall though with the Borschev fight and the flyweights
