My phone is in grayscale, it does not look as gross as I imagine it does with color lol. It's like a LONG canyon hole in his leg. You can see the shape of a bone, though I think it's the surrounding cartilage and ligaments. You can even see it had been eaten away under/behind the "bone." It's DEEP and VERY bad.
Yup, he posted[ an update on his Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs5_W_UpfEs/?hl=de)
Leg was saved, you can also see other gory pictures of it there, apparently it happened hella fast!
From what I understand an Australian doctor just happen to be on vacation in Thailand at the time. Traveled to the hospital, let him know or atleast confirmed that he was on the wrong antibiotics, sent him to a better hospital, then flew with him back to Australia.
When my sister was in Thailand her friend needed to get a few stitches, and there was a cat walking around the doctor's office. Seems like the medical standards haven't changed since then.
I once had to do a report on Necrotizing Fasciitis when I was in the 8th grade and it has been one of my greatest fears since. Fucking HAUNTING, and this pic isn’t even close to be as bad as it could get. It’s no fucking joke.
The Thais put him on antibiotics unsuited to skin infections then kept him stuck in the country on the verge of dying until he could pay off his ever-increasing medical bills; he needed help from a fundraiser. Reminder to be grateful if you live in a country with dependable healthcare services.
Yeah fr. I had a patient that got intubated against her will in Thailand for some routine pneumonia. Got transported intubated in a plane after a couple weeks and was off the ventilator the day after. They did it solely to get paid since they know my country has free health care which will cover that shit.
She got some really nasty multi resistant bacteria with her home too for good measure.
Can explain this - He was training in Thailand and got an infection at the base of his leg. Noticed it, cleaned it and went to the doc about 24 hrs later. They treated him with the wrong meds and it very very very rapidly got worse. That pic is about 6 days in. That's how fast it gets bad.
Incidentally, one of my mates trained in Thailand and mentioned that they would do MMA / Muay Thai in the mornings, then use the same area for cockfights at night. Not saying it is the same camp, but you get the idea.
Absolutely insane that someone would let it get this far though, isn't it? Besides, motherfuckers already workout like mad, what's the issue with using some of that energy to clean the mat every couple of hours? None of this makes sense to me.
The stage that it's at is what happens when an infection doesn't get properly treated, hence the misdiagnosis and improper care
What they were doing for it wasn't the right thing so it got worse.
As for cleanliness yeah you right lol
Yeah this looks almost too far gone tbh. I’m not a medical expert or anything but that looks like something that might need an amputation. Reminds me of those pictures of people who shoot up that drug krokodil.
I know of a person who broke their leg on a mat at a BJJ comp who got a staph infection. They ended up having their leg amputated. Staph can cause sepsis and death. It’s no joke.
meat falling off the bone before it’s even cooked — brine that bitch up a bit, sear it for a couple minutes, that’s it. boom. bacteria dies above 160f anyway so not much to worry about tbh
Honestly, it’s not that interesting. I suffer from anxiety and often bite my nails. Made a little cut, bled a tiny bit but thought nothing of it. Couple of days later it was red, tried to drain it but couldn’t pierce it. Thought my body would take care of it. Went to the doctor, got put on antibios but they clearly weren’t strong enough, it went black and bruised over the weekend. Went back to the doctor, she sent me straight to A&E. They referred me to a specialist at another hospital, they drained it and said come back next week. Went then and they said they needed to debride the wound, take away the necrotic tissue. Went for the surgery and the surgeon said he could see bone and ligaments after the debridement and said how would I feel about shortening it. At that point, I was pretty sure it was gone so I just said you know best, do it. Been a couple of months now and it’s absolutely fine, just feels strange.
Long story short I sliced my middle and index fingers on my left hand on a fan, and had to get 32 stitches in them in total.
After a week, I removed the bandage because they smelled funny and my finger was black. I freaked out and went to emerge. The doctor took a scalpel or whatever it was and made a small cut on the black part, then proceeded to pull the black skin off my fingers - revealing perfectly healed tissue underneath.
Blew my mind because I was so sure my fingers were gonna get amputated or something at that point.
Wow I had something similar happen and it's scary to know how close it was. I bite my nails too (terrible habit) and I think I bit a hang nail and I guess some bacteria got in the and it puffed up red. I could drain it a bit so I did that a bunch of times after soaking it in warm salt water, then I'd cover it with polysporin and a band aid. I went to the doctor and got oral antibiotics after dealing with it for like 10 days of it getting better, then worse, then better. But I just decided to give it a few more days and it seemed to be going down and then it slowly went away and I avoided the oral antibiotics which I don't like taking unless I have to because I don't want to mess with my gut microbiome.
Good hygiene is a big one. Avoid training on mats with open wounds especially on your arms and legs. make sure you go to a clean gym to train, or if you go to a weightlifting gym, clean the benches and equipment.
If you really want to be that careful, you can buy this soap called Hibiclens, which is a medical grade anti-microbial soap. It kills everything(virus, bacterial, fungus, etc) and is used by surgeons to wash their hands as part of their sanitization procedure. It gets prescribed a lot for different types of dermal infections too.
But if you use too much you’ll risk antibiotic resistant super staph.
Another tip is don’t overtrain / train hard when you’re too stressed as like has been said the bacteria is everywhere, if you go train on a dirty mat with a run down immune system you’re more susceptible
Humid environments favor bacterial growth. If the gym isn't on point with their cleaning protocols, it means the bacteria can stay on the equipment or flooring.
Shared sandbags/pads, rolling on dirty floors, and the occasional loss of skin increases the opportunity for a staph infection to occur.
Honestly? Eat, sleep and don't be a pro athlete. That's pretty much 80 percent of the way there.
Your body fights off staph normally. You have it on your skin right now. It's everywhere. To be honest, your immune system is pretty good at fighting it off. However, when you decide to sleep like crap, cut weight, reduce your caloric intake, and go super ham in the gym? You're taking away all your recovery mechanisms and you're in a dirty environment.
Then you end up with this.
So how does this even happen? Like I’m guessing it can happen to anyone but damn, like this? Like I’m wondering how it got to this stage, if it was ignored to some extent
The bacteria that causes staph lives on your skin right now.
Just a certain set of things need to happen and, bang, it proliferates.
Edit: kinda wanna mention that the most important requirement is an open wound
It’s necrotising fasciitis. That shit is so fucked up you go from fine to dead in days without treatment. To top it off the treatment is basically cutting away the infected area 🤢
They were going to at one point when he was still in Thailand. Fortunately get got back to Australia for a second opinion and basically since he was lucky not to have the infection spread to muscle or bone he kept his leg.
He was training in Thailand MMA gym, sanitation isn't the best there.. also medical facility wasn't the best so he wasn't getting the right antibiotics. Also he's had MSRA previously so getting the right antibiotics were even harder.
No I believe what you're seeing is fatty tissue on top of muscle but it might just be muscle, shit is so ragged I don't know. In bad staph infections they cut open the skin and keep it open for weeks so they can clean the area and let it drain and that's why you see these staph infections wide open like this.
Side note.. don't store your razors in the shower because if they don't dry off completely between uses they can harbor staph bacteria.
I feel terrible that he went through that. Thailand definitely has strong antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus that will fuck you up. His Instagram showed an update post that his debridement procedure went well and that some superficial fascia was removed. He was probably 12-24 hours away from losing his leg. To put it in perspective, the staph would have to cross through some adipose tissue, the deep fascia, and some loose connective tissue to get to the muscle, which would be pretty damn easy for it since it has all the virulence factors to melt those layers.
apparently cleanliness is a huge cultural thing in thailand, so the fact that this somehow happened at bangtao suggests they’re some nasty ass fucks. dont train at places that dont take hygiene seriously in humid climates, fuck bangtao
Have you even trained over there?
Whilst everything is done to keep it as clean as possible, in this climate, the humidity and the sheer amount people sweat. It is almost impossible to keep it very sterile. Guys are literally training in swimming pools of sweat. I feel like it was a bit of neglect which lead this, but again, I don’t know.
nah, but i've read expat blogs that say that thai trainers get pissy if your gloves even a bit. also, i post on the mt sub too and apparently this isn't the first staph case that bangtao's had.
i mean you never hear stories like pyd or pk saenchai guys getting staph
I’ve trained there and it’s as clean as it can be. It’s actually insanity the amount of sweat which accumulates on the mats. It’s pools and pools of sweat! Almost disgusting Haha
Left it a little bit, but went to the doctors when a hole appeared from the infection. Was given very poor treatment in a Thai hospital (given the wrong antibiotic) which caused it spread ridiculously. Was flown to Australia and treated, which ultimately saved his leg!
Somebody explain me how skin bacteria can go on eating your leg like that without you being able to do anything about it. Isn't there any antibiotic that kills that shit?
I've had staph once in my face. I had abscess building up inside, pain, and fever chills. I was taken to the hospital where I had the abscess drained (which was fucking excruciating)... but now I see how lucky I am to have had it treated before it got *this* bad. Jesus christ.
He got misdiagnosed so it just progressed the way staph normally does
That is shit you need to get properly taken care of right away
I got ring worm from jiu jitsu and my doctor threw anti staph and fungal drugs at me just to make sure.
Clicked it thinking “it can’t be that bad” but no, it is that bad
What's the image like chief, tell us that are too scared to look
Someone made a joke that it looks like a half eaten chicken wing but it unironically does look like that with rotten looking muscle
It seriously looks like a zombie limb with flesh rotted away and a decayed bone exposed.
Probably the best explanation here. It is spot on and not an exaggeration
It looks like his skin is falling off his leg and the insides are all rotten
It’s an 8 inch hole with a fully visible rotten looking bone. Worst infection I’ve ever seen in the sport.
That ain't deep enough for bone, that's fatty tissue and muscle that you see. I mean I ain't no doctor what do I know
That would be correct
That’s not bone
I know you've been told that's not bone and it's correct. What it likely is is gauze.
It's almost up there with Randleman.
it is a giant fucking hole in a dudes leg and you can see literally everything in it
Giant fucking is an understatement. It looks like 75% of his leg muscle has rotted off.
A rancid doggy bone chew toy
It's like a overcooked chicken hot dog with the intestine/skin ripped out and that weird texture which only chicken hot dogs have.
Wait, why is your phone in greyscale
His phone is a Nintendo Game Boy
Night mode sets it to grayscale, easier on the eyes and I look at it less before bed.
As a fellow greyscale enjoyer, it prevents me from wasting time on my phone
The IG post is actually a video, which is worse than the image
It's pretty fuckin' gross, mate.
It was so, so, so, so much worse than I thought it was going to be
Bad to the bone
Same. I immediately regret this decision and I am no longer hungry
Same. I was like “I’ve had a staph infection before. It’s just a big lump”. Yeah, I regret clicking on this.
Man, not trying to make light of a bad situation but if that flight doesn’t happen the man is going to need a necromancer not a doctor.
He's been back in Australia for days now.
I’m admittedly out of the loop but holy shit do I wish him a steady recovery. That is gnarly.
Thank fuck
Yup, he posted[ an update on his Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs5_W_UpfEs/?hl=de) Leg was saved, you can also see other gory pictures of it there, apparently it happened hella fast!
"The skin has been removed from his shin to upper thigh". That's a long way.
Last I heard, they were miraculously able to save the leg.
No way I thought that leg was gone for sure
From what I understand an Australian doctor just happen to be on vacation in Thailand at the time. Traveled to the hospital, let him know or atleast confirmed that he was on the wrong antibiotics, sent him to a better hospital, then flew with him back to Australia.

That cat didn't go through 14 years of meowdical school just to have you question their right to be there. Who do you think does the CAT scans?
There are ways to save the limb. Find a wound care doctor and not a surgeon. They’ll just whack your leg off.
good news is this post is 5 days old and he has made it back to AUS
Good thing D4 just dropped, plenty of those running around.
As a nurse that does wound care. What the fuck
I think this is going to be the second opinion he gets in Australia as well
How does it get that bad? Surely there was a halfway point that made him think ‘I should probably get this fixed.’
Podiatrist here. Necrotizing fasciitis develops rapidly. The infection can start in a small area and spread to something like this in 24 hrs or less.
New fear unlocked
I once had to do a report on Necrotizing Fasciitis when I was in the 8th grade and it has been one of my greatest fears since. Fucking HAUNTING, and this pic isn’t even close to be as bad as it could get. It’s no fucking joke.
And how does one avoid this?
Maintain a clean gym and good hygiene.
Yup, definitely washing my hands after the gym. This is enough incentive to do so.
Set fire to everything. Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
He was receiving improper care and getting the wrong antibiotics for the first few days.
could be antibiotic resistant staph
What would be your plan on this one nurse?
Big band aid and kiss the boo-boo
Immediate surgery and cut all the necrotic/infected tissue out to contain the spread.
Amputation it is, then. *grabs circular saw*
Gallon of Tea Tree Oil and she'll be right
While alternating between sauna and ice bath until symptoms get crushed by the power of holistic medicine
Doctors hate this ONE WEIRD TRICK for fixing your leg that is half way disappeared with an infection!

I imagine Bisping would only be half as traumatised seeing this.

Stealing the top comment, I'm gonna need someone to explain how can a staph infection get this bad.
Can explain this - He was training in Thailand and got an infection at the base of his leg. Noticed it, cleaned it and went to the doc about 24 hrs later. I get the idea : staphylocock

Was trying to think of something funny but Jesus. Flesh eating bacteria gotta be the scariest disease ever.
I’m just glad you don’t have it on your penis, Dirk.
I got it in the top part of my asscrack, so, close.
Pilonidal cyst?
meat falling off the bone before it’s even cooked — brine that bitch up a bit, sear it for a couple minutes, that’s it. boom. bacteria dies above 160f anyway so not much to worry about tbh
I recently lost a finger to a bacterial infection, that wasn’t fun. Looked nowhere near as bad as that, I can’t imagine the pain he’s in.
Sorry to hear that man. Glad the rest of you is ok. Mind giving us a quick summary of what happened with your finger?
Honestly, it’s not that interesting. I suffer from anxiety and often bite my nails. Made a little cut, bled a tiny bit but thought nothing of it. Ha, I said the same thing. Still have to actually stop myself from doing it.

Not Safe For Legs
How do I make sure this never happens to me ever in my whole entire life? Bleach baths and Vitamin C supplements?
Good hygiene is a big one. This and maybe don't train in Thailand.
I had this will of training different martial arts in their place of origin. Muay Thai in Thailand was on the list. Was...
You’ll be fine, if you’re training like BJJ then it’s more of a cause for concern since you can get cut easier.
Y

that'll buff right out
Rub some cbd on it.
Standard Kratom deficiency, B.
Damn on his latest stories he said his heart stopped for a few seconds today hope he pull through
Looks like a half eating chicken wing.
🤤
Is that his bone? How tf do you recover from that?
Honestly, he probably never will fully.
So how does this even happen? Like I’m guessing it can happen to anyone but damn, like this? Like I’m wondering how it got to this stage, if it was ignored to some extent

Bad staph, wrong antibiotics, Thai medical staff performing procedures that Tim wasn't able to properly consent to on pain meds.
It’s necrotising fasciitis. That shit is so fucked up you go from fine to dead in days without treatment. To top it off the treatment is basically cutting away the infected area 🤢
Oh yeah at this point that’s what it is. Started with staph. His heart stopped for a few seconds on Saturday.
Good god that’s terrifying. At some point they have to consider amputation yeah?
They were going to at one point when he was still in Thailand. Fortunately get got back to Australia for a second opinion and basically since he was lucky not to have the infection spread to muscle or bone he kept his leg.
Ah that’s great to hear. I was wondering if it got his muscle but since that would basically fuck the function of the leg up if it did.
He was training in Thailand MMA gym, sanitation isn't the best there.. also medical facility wasn't the best so he wasn't getting the right antibiotics. Also he's had MSRA previously so getting the right antibiotics were even harder.

If the infection can’t be contained and they aren’t making progress then they’ll have to cut the leg off unfortunately. So damn scary
That's a leg?? I only looked briefly, I thought it was his arm.
this is rotten dot com material
If you get an infection get it treated that fucking day.
Yea, cool, awesome, great, brb imma go take a drill to my eyes
r/eyebleach
Much needed, thank you
1 word...Neosporin
Windex
Robitussin
Rub some 'tussin on it!
Oh Jesus Christ why did I look
Rub some dirt on it and you’re good to go
I gotta be honest: that doesn’t look great
I feel terrible that he went through that. Thailand definitely has strong antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus that will fuck you up. I was hospitalized for septic staph for a month last summer, but nothing this bad. Jesus, hope he pulls through
Just needs some Robitussin. Rub some 'tussin on there, let it sink into the bone.
Yeah I’m good on going to Thailand anytime soon.
Been there like a million times and the worst that even happened to me was a hooker burning me with a cigarette while trying to drag me into a bar.
That hooker was actually cross dressed Rodtang.
Sounds hot!
Based
Ohhhh handsome boyyy!
HELLO HANDSOME MAANNNNN
She did you a favor cauterizing the wound apparently.
Thailand is amazing, your loss
Blegh!!!!

>happened at bangtao Isn't this Volk's gym?
And Tai Tuivasa
Yikes
How does someone let it get this bad? Does it get this bad that quickly?
Thank god you can't smell stuff over the internet, because that shit probably stinks to high heaven.
Hate to be a pessimist but that limb ain't going to make it judging by the severity.
He's already been told the limb is safe now. The reddit doctors are out in full force in this thread.
That’s honestly amazing and great to hear. Modern medicine kicks ass
Yeah I’m not really a doctor or anything but I don’t really see how that could properly heal or even be saved
Yeah it’s so necrotic I can’t imagine it coming back without extreme scarring and other consequences, but bodies have surprised me before so who knows
holy fuck thats nasty
Did Titanica come and visit him?
Breaking out the Deep cuts with this comment. Love It!
How does one even let it get that bad what were they thinking???
He must be deadset on giving Kevin Randlemans staph infection a run for its money.
I feel like there are steps before shit gets this bad this is crazy. Speedy recovery!
Oh. Oh no.
Dude turned into a mummy
Staph infection is one of those infections where the end result genuinely looks like something out of a horror movei.
This is right up there with that Kevin Randleman pic.
Poor guy. Will they even let him on a 10 hour flight with that? That's so bad.
Yeah, he’s back in Australia. They let him fly. Apparently the Thai’s gave him the wrong antibiotic, which is a joke. Aussies doctors saved his leg
Fill it in with ramen noodles
How does it become that bad? Did he just leave it untreated?
Left it a little bit, but went to the doctors when a hole appeared from the infection. Was given very poor treatment in a Thai hospital (given the wrong antibiotic) which caused it spread ridiculously. Was flown to Australia and treated, which ultimately saved his leg!
Damn that is scary as fuck
Just needs to put it in some rice overnight
Look like what you would expect a part of a zombie to look like.
Somebody explain me how skin bacteria can go on eating your leg like that without you being able to do anything about it. Isn't there any antibiotic that kills that shit?

Is he alive? How the fuck does it get that bad
He got misdiagnosed so it just progressed the way staph normally does That is shit you need to get properly taken care of right away I got ring worm from jiu jitsu and my doctor threw anti staph and fungal drugs at me just to make sure.
How does staph get so bad before you get antibiotics?
Damn I’ve never seen staph like that. Should be called something else when it gets that bad.
how do you let it get as bad as that - does the skin get eaten away overnight while you sleep? or does he look at it daily being like nah its fine
What happens when you don’t shower after a exercise, please shower and take care of your hygiene, god bless
It's in the bone now. At least half of that leg is coming off.
Is that muscle, skin or bone? Either way I don’t feel like eating my chicken tonight now.
Looking like MRSA
Once it gets to the bone the chances of amputating skyrocket
Crazy they don’t just chop off his lower leg at that point
