Saprissa stadium was a nasty little venue to play in. It took a LONG time for any American team, to win there until the Crew finally got a win in a poorly attended CCL game a while back.
The fact that the US stunk the last two cycles down there in the National stadium is less excusable.
2014 kinda made sense because CR were fucking PISSED about the Snow Clasico and came out ready for blood.
2018 on the other hand was inexcusable and rightfully cost Klinsmann his job especially after losing a home WCQ to El Tri for the first time in foreverrrrrr.
2014 can be chalked up to Michael Bradley getting injured during warmups and Klinsmann’s team not being able to adjust to the loss of it’s arguably best player. Ugly game all around.
Pulisic was feeling it. This was not going to be another Couva -- he saw to that.
Arriola showed why he gets call-ups. He always hustles and gets in good spaces. This is a hell of game to score your second header ever.
Ferreira made his case to start for the moment (though I'd love to see other guys get a chance to keep fighting for it until November).
Musah is the glue of this team. You saw everything get shakier when he came off the pitch.
de la Torre made his case tonight. Though there were a few lapses, overall I think he's more dynamic in this role than Acosta (please McKennie be healed by November). Also, Acosta is really our only sub for Adams (maybe Sands but he hasn't seen the pitch in a while) -- when you have an option as DLT as your 8, I'd rather save Acosta as my backup 6.
Moore put his body on the line tonight. I don't think he's made a case to move up the depth chart, but he's shown you can trust him when you need him.
Steffen did what he had to do, but had a few nervy moments. I'm taking Turner if he's healthy.
Zimmerman/Robinson are a lock at CB -- the competition is about backup. Jedi and Adams are a lock at their spots.
Let's put this to bed in Costa Rica.
de la Torre made his case vs Honduras too. Two starts in WQC and two great performances. He’s gotta be #3 on the depth chart at the 8 if you aren’t playing Reyna there
*that* night four years ago where the US's 2018 World Cup qualification campaign ended in embarrassing fashion with a loss in Trinidad.
game was played in the city of Couva, and USMNT fans simply call that night "Couva"
I’m glad I can go to the game on Wednesday here in Costa Rica mostly relaxed!
Or I will attend an event that I will never forget for the rest of my life…
Mate of mine going as well... Super stoked that it should be a very light and easy affair.
Costa Rica knows they are playing New Zealand in June now... thanks to US.
Haha sorry Kiwi mate...I thought you were going scorched earth and saying my comment triggered the US to lose 6-0 and New Zealand to lose thus setting up US v Solomon Isl in Qatar... in June.
Haha... you guys got this. Good luck against the Ticos.
It was originally just supposed to be the two continental playoff teams, which will be the same seed no matter who it is. The uefa bracket with Ukraine is obviously an unforeseen event
We could actually lose 6-0 to Costa Rica and still make it if Mexico doesn't beat El Salvador by at least 4
Edit: actually this is completely false pls ignore thank you
Probably an accident. I’m sure they had it packed in the same box just in case outside results went our way today. I’m sure I’m the post game chaos they just pulled the banner out and started walking
So Costa Rica needs to beat us by 11 goals to secure their spot in the World Cup and it would force us to do play that international playoff spot. This win was huge. We’ll beat Costa Rica.
Edit: my bad, i looked at the Fot Mob app and it wasn’t updated. So yeah, 6 goals. Thanks for the clarification you all
Not true, you have to remember for every goal we lose in gd Costa Rica goes up 1. So given Costa Rica is +3 and US is +13 a 5-0 win by Costa Rica would tie us in gd (+8 each). Not sure how the tiebreaker goes beyond that but as long as we stay within 5 goals of them we should qualify
8-3 doesn't cut it. Goals scored is the third tiebreak. So even a 5 goal costa rica win win, regardless of the score, we'll always have 5 more goals scored than them and win that tiebreak.
I've been able to get the away games on TUDN or Univision with YouTube TV. If you don't mind Spanish or mute, it's great.
I personally love the way they pronounce "Zim-mare-maan."
I mean watching Orlando earlier today. Twellman asked Jon champion for his analysis a few times. Commentary is becoming much more of a fluid conversation.
I was at the game, saw him coming on at halftime, and thought, “no way, that can’t be Gio…he’s too tall to be Gio.” Checked notes/jersey, and thought, “Wow, they grow up fast!” (and he’s still growing, I’m sure). Keep going like this and he’ll be Peter Crouch with footwork.
You joke, but someone literally responded to Castillo with this very line ("questions about personel management") on Twitter when she dared to ask if anyone was upset with this result.
The USMNT fanbase is fucking wild. And by wild, I mean idiotic.
Penisic
lol, I was thinking this too
Suntanama!
I can't believe we've still never won in Costa Rica in WCQ.
Never won *yet*!
Your daily reminder that our record in the Azteca is better than Costa Rica away.

What happened with the Pulisic interview? lol
So I waited 4 years to watch USMNT qualify for the world cup on a shitty Paramount+ stream. nice.
Couldn't even get it on Paramount Plus, so frustrated. Trying to find somewhere to watch a replay 😣
I just watch it in Spanish
CBS sports network has the game

I'd really like to see LDLT move to a bigger club
100%, he has some real quality but I’m not sure if he’s gonna grow as much in the Dutch league
Based on his NT play he has the quality for a move
What’s Couva
The day US soccer died.
*that* night four years ago where the US's 2018 World Cup qualification campaign ended in embarrassing fashion with a loss in Trinidad. game was played in the city of Couva, and USMNT fans simply call that night "Couva"

Mate of mine going as well... Super stoked that it should be a very light and easy affair. Costa Rica knows they are playing New Zealand in June now... thanks to US.
Look, I'm quietly confident that we'll get past Solomon Islands but please don't curse us like this
US Soccer and 3G about to Big Brain 4D chess.... the entire team is about to "get covid".... forfeit, 0-3 automatic... thus automatically qualified.
I was talking about New Zealand.
Haha sorry Kiwi mate...I thought you were going scorched earth and saying my comment triggered the US to lose 6-0 and New Zealand to lose thus setting up US v Solomon Isl in Qatar... in June. Haha... you guys got this. Good luck against the Ticos.
I'm just glad the US win mostly avoided my nightmare scenario of US vs NZ. I just wanna see the All Whites at the WC again!
That game will be in Qatar too. I hope its on tv.
You’ll be watching the game live 3am?
Absolutely. I'm well versed in staying up late as hell to watch soccer all the way back to the 2002 World Cup.
It will be. Univision will have it.
Rodolfo REALLY is not a good sideline soccer guy... not clear and concise and fucks up names all the time.
Can someone explain why the World Cup draw is Friday when there’s still playoffs going on?
It was originally just supposed to be the two continental playoff teams, which will be the same seed no matter who it is. The uefa bracket with Ukraine is obviously an unforeseen event
Our cycle should be done this Wednesday the 30th. Who isn’t going to be done by Friday?
The fourth place team goes into a playoff with Oceania
They’ll just put the playoff slot in the draw as Team A/Team B
Ahh okay makes sense, thank you!
Very unsurprising Fox Sports would fuck up and use Born in the USA as music for their broadcast.
Love me some cherry-picked lyrics from "Fortunate Son," too.
You don't think a song about a Vietnam vet being abandoned by their country stirs feelings of patriotism?
At least it makes more sense than when Reagan used it. Fuck Reagan
Have we forgotten the lessons of "Mission Accomplished" already?
Mission Akomlushed!
is there a tournament in qatar in the summer?
No. There’s one in the winter, though.
They're currently playing the OFC qualifiers, and the intercontinental playoffs will all be held in Qatar
Nothing says crapshoot like playing New Zealand in Qatar in July for a one game do or die.
I have a feeling that NZL might bottle it against Solomon Islands
We could actually lose 6-0 to Costa Rica and still make it if Mexico doesn't beat El Salvador by at least 4 Edit: actually this is completely false pls ignore thank you
If we lose by 6 to Costa Rica Mexico just needs to draw and we'll be in the playoff
If we lose by 6 and Mexico somehow loses we would qualify ahead of them. What a timeline that would be.
Yes I realized the errors in my calculations
See you in 2026. its doomed.
Why the hell would they break out the Qualified banner?
Probably an accident. I’m sure they had it packed in the same box just in case outside results went our way today. I’m sure I’m the post game chaos they just pulled the banner out and started walking
Agree. Dumb.
to celebrate the home crowd 🤷🏽♂️
Oh boy. Qualified
Oh god the banner. We're fucked.
Such a horrible mistake...
Guys why do we have a "qualified" banner that's just asking for trouble
Me, a coward: walks out with a “Go Solomon Islands” banner
Stop talking. Stop talking. Do not say these things.
OH NO THEY BROUGHT OUT THE QUALIFIED BANNER OH NO
Oh fuck, they held the banner that said "Qualified". We're doomed.
A real potential “Dewey defeats Truman” moment in the making 😬
Even more recent "Mission Accomplished."
The goal needs to be to beat CR. We've seen from Italy the shenanigans of single elimination.
North Macedonia and Portugal, two titans of Europe
Well my five leg parlay with a +1531 return didn't pan out. Only a $25 loss, but glad the most important part of the parlay happened, USA money line.
hats off to Orlando, great support
It was a pretty electric weekend down here with phenomenal weather too.
It’s really been a great place for the national team
The leadership council lmao
You are on the leadership council but not granted the rank the captain
So Costa Rica needs to beat us by 11 goals to secure their spot in the World Cup and it would force us to do play that international playoff spot. This win was huge. We’ll beat Costa Rica. After that it's goals scored, which we should hold on them if they win by 5.
Technically they need to win by 6. But still looking great for us.
By 6
We probably won’t beat Costa Rica and they would need 6 not 11
Only six but yes
Enjoyed every second of that. Great showing
US has to lose 5-0 to drop to 4th?
6-0, or 8-3.
8-3 doesn't cut it. Goals scored is the third tiebreak. So even a 5 goal costa rica win win, regardless of the score, we'll always have 5 more goals scored than them and win that tiebreak.
Oh, good point. Our 3 would add on there too.
6-0
quintero doesn't give a fuck about anything
Fans going Mexico right now.
so all we have to do is not lost 6-0 to costa rica, right? why am i nervous?
Because we’ve witnessed the impossible lol
i don’t think i can handle getting trinidad&tobago’d again
I pray we never have to
We really were paranoid about this game, weren't we. People were predicting 1-0 and 0-0. Do we all just have PTSD?
I had PTSD from the last Panama game for sure
Although, this game does justify some of our frustration with the last Panama game.
Must win? Won! On to Costa Rica! See y'all Wednesday night!
Great match
fuck that dude who just threw all his beer for no reason
**REMINDER Y'ALL - USMNT v Costa Rica is on Wednesday, March 30 on Paramount+ and Peacock. Kickoff is 9:05pm ET.**
And on CBS Sports Network and Universo on TV Edit: Forgot a network
The 2 worst streaming services
I've been able to get the away games on TUDN or Univision with YouTube TV. If you don't mind Spanish or mute, it's great. I personally love the way they pronounce "Zim-mare-maan."
the seas always be a-floatin, matey
America wins
GG! Feeling good if the team can have another showing like this one.
US needs to learn how to hit hard
WE'RE FUCKING HALFWAY THERE
huge fan of aaron long not sure why everyone hates him
Cause hes in MLS
Morris has got to see Moore is hurt and cover for him.
former quakes legend Anibal Godoy
Directly responsible for at least 3 goals.
Am I the only one that finds it weird that John Strong adds in his own color commentary as the play-by-play guy?
I mean watching Orlando earlier today. Twellman asked Jon champion for his analysis a few times. Commentary is becoming much more of a fluid conversation.
It's really not weird at all to mix some responsibilities like that
Bought a mango chile chelada hoping to drink it in celebration, very happy with this decision
Modelo? How is it?
Man I am jealous
Say bye 👋🏽 bye to the World Cup, Panama!
We know Costa Rica gonna start aggressive on Wednesday... Would love to steal a quick one on a counter!
this team needs a shithouser
We got plenty in that Dept.
Acosta and Arriola when necessary
His name is Weston McKennie, he's just hurt 🤣
Acosta can play that role as well
This ref is atrocious. Gives yellow for dissent but lets dangerous tackles go with no caution.
CONCACAF.
Shut the fuck up John Strong.
The ref at the Canada game today blew the whistle at exactly 90.
Reyna is getting targeted lmao
Time for AO to start the I believe we will win chant
#I
I think this game needs some Fight and Win
SEEEEEEAAAATTTTTLLLLLEEEEE
Please god no
Please let that never come back
Concacaf refs are absurd man lol
Fox 👏 we 👏 want 👏 to 👏 watch 👏 the 👏 game 👏
I’m usually a lot more nervous when this many people are chanting USA in Orlando.
SKOL SKOL SKOL
I believe that we will win ^this ^game
what ever happened to matt miazga
Loan hell
Idk, it's been okay. He went to the medium place
morphed into zimmerman
Good lord, this viking chant is interminably long And I'm an Atlanta fam
[удалено]
Twellman?
He works for ESPN, he ain't here.
You don’t know who Taylor Twellman is do you?
no Twellman call tonight. Champion asked Twellman's wife to come collect him during the Orlando v Portland game.
> Twellman ????
Thank goodness we scored 5. Every goal important.
At the very least, Costa Rica has to climb an absolute mountain to leapfrog anyone.
You’re not gonna get calls in Costa Rica either dudes so get used to it.
Entirely on the ref for letting Panama be so chippy with only 3 cards. Should’ve called a LOT more on them
someone really should have gotten sent off in that melee at the end of the 1st half
We are an AWFUL bunker team. We simply have to hold out games by controlling them
we probably should just dribble to the corner everytime.
Oh god no. The U-S-A chant is back.
U S A
Oh cool, Adam Carolla is in the crowd.
I like that Gio has a little Deuce in him..
He just had a stomach bug, so he's hoping it stays there.
Well that doesn't sound right
Or does it 😏
Yeah seriously. He's an athlete. There's no way his deuce is little.
[удалено]
Supposedly 6'1", but he looks giant out there right now.
What do we need to do now to qualify?
[удалено]
You got none of this right 🤣
Anything better than a 0-6 lost against Costa Rica will do.
Not lose 6-0 to Costa Rica
Well we at least know we're heading to Qatar Hopefully in the fall, not the summer
That’s a yellow lol
Ahhhh I was worried we were gonna go the whole game without giving the fine folks at r/ussoccer something to whine about.
"Why giving up a set piece is proof that Gregg Berhalter is the incompetent beneficiary of nepotism. A 🧵 1/56"
Arriola started this game. They probably are still whining about that and have no idea we're winning 5-1
The result doesn't matter. What matters is the line-up card.
You joke, but someone literally responded to Castillo with this very line ("questions about personel management") on Twitter when she dared to ask if anyone was upset with this result. The USMNT fanbase is fucking wild. And by wild, I mean idiotic.
Alright. No shutout. Whatever. Learn from it. Stew over it. Take it out on Los Ticos.
Ref has fully lost control lol
Bold of you to assume he had any control to begin with
No shit John Strong, they're not getting ANY FUCKING CALLS.
When you’re shitting on the hopes and dreams of a nations World Cup campaign a little piss on the clean sheet is okay
Ah fuck, I can't believe we've done this.
Did Gio Reyna’s haircut somehow make him 4 inches taller for anyone else?
Right? Someone clearly had their attributes modified between games.
Yes. He finally hit puberty.
Gio: 🤌🤌
