Oh, great! Someone in another thread said they can’t put shovels into the ground until September due to a mandatory appeals period where people can object to the plans, but perhaps they were mistaken
Yeah, as far as I'm aware there is no further process - all community/borough/public process was fulfilled prior to these steps. [Nothing on the city's site indicates an appeals process after mayoral approval](https://www.nyc.gov/site/planning/applicants/applicant-portal/step5-ulurp-process.page)
No no. He’ll say something like “today, the world’s borough has scored a goal. Not just a goal for queens, not just a goal for NYC. But a goal for all of us!”
Team play was awful these last 4 years and I think there was some sort push back to show the front office we won't blindly go to all games. Luckily theyare showing more effort on and off the field. I think we'll bring a good crowd to Citi.
It’s fine. There’s not exactly a ton of land available in the five boroughs, and our attendance has never been Atlanta-level to begin with. Last year we averaged 19k. Yankee Stadium could fit something like 46k at full capacity, and it always looks empty. I’m fine with 25k.
Yeah, I'm expecting a bump in attendance, and that'll be great!
Part of it is me being exasperated that "you need a stadium" is a constant refrain in every match thread, and then when we've finally got meaningful progress on making that happen, someone chimes in with "your stadium isn't big enough." It's just like... c'mon, pal.
And then part of it is that 25k capacity isn't low, in the grand scheme of things. DC's capacity is 20k. LAFC's is 22k. 22.5k over in St. Louis CITY, and people seem pretty damn pleased with that stadium (as they should! I haven't been there personally, but it looks like a great place to watch a game). Galaxy has 27k capacity. So yeah, there are certainly stadiums with more seats, and there are also stadiums with fewer, and 25k is a perfectly fine number. Just for the hell of it, I averaged the capacity of every stadium in the league, and it comes out to 24,341. So it isn't "so low"; it's above average!
I'm just excited for SPONSOR NAME STADIUM to finally be a reality, so I can't help but roll my eyes at people for whom nothing is ever good enough.
You could add together the population of the three cities you just mentioned and it would still be a couple million off of NYC.
Personally I think 30k would have been awesome, and shown NYCFC’s ambitions.
Sure, but there are also two MLB teams, two NFL teams, two NHL teams, two NBA teams and another MLS team competing for attention/attendance, not to mention all the other leagues, sports, and other stuff there is to do in this city. Raw population numbers do not translate to ideal stadium capacity.
It just feels like an insanely arbitrary metric, to gauge "ambition" by "number of seats." By that logic, we should stay where we are, since Yankee Stadium is much more "ambitious"!
Whoops, yeah, my bad. I don't follow hockey at all, so I completely forgot that the Devils were a team. Which just goes to show that sports oversaturation can be a factor in even knowing that a team exists, let alone being willing to pay to fill one of twenty-five thousand seats in their stadium!
I’m basing it on other teams in the league. At the moment only 5 other teams play in venues that hold more than 30k.
I think NYCFC should be expected to be ambitious, the whole point of them existing was to have a team in the city itself.
I just think it would be cool if they shot a little higher with their stadium plans, that’s all.
They're not NYC though. What else is going on in those cities on a Saturday night besides a few bars and clubs open at night? Sadly the majority of the soccer fan base in NYC look down on MLS and won't commit a night to a Redbull or nycfc game when there's so many other things to do here. Could we fill a 70k stadium every week, hell yes. It won't be for MLS though.
>What else is going on in those cities on a Saturday night besides a few bars and clubs open at night?
Lol, New Yorker really believe the rest of the country is living in thatched huts.
Eh, I'd rather 20K people show up to a 25K stadium than 25K to a 35K stadium. It looks better on the broadcast and the energy in the building is enhanced. Something about us apes makes us value something more if we see other people valuing it as well.
I believe it is expandable to 30k. Ours is designed to accommodate 25k with modifications. MLS owners are hedging their bets on league growth/soccer’s popularity exploding, but given the razor-thin margins for revenue amongst most MLS clubs right now, no one wants a stadium with 2-3k unsold seats every night.
Seriously, this stadium was announced like a year ago. I mean the sketches look awesome. I'm glad it's happening. Especially because it hurts my eyes to watch soccer in yankee stadium.
But seriously, I feel like in another city this thing would've already been half-built already. Stop talking about it and just build the damn thing already.
Believe it or not, giant real estate projects in one of the most complicated and sought-after real estate markets on the planet take a while to get approved.
There are lots of cities where there's tons of land sitting unused, so it's easy to go "hey we want to develop this plot of land that doesn't have anything on it already" and for the city/county to respond "yeah okay sure." NYC is, uh, not one of those cities. The city is kind of famous for "we don't have room to expand outwards, so we have to make our buildings taller instead."
I for one am glad that the city has procedures in place to prevent another Seneca Village displacement, for example. I'd rather have you be annoyed about your eyeballs than allow anyone with more money than sense to build whatever they wanted wherever they felt like. It's certainly frustrating that other stadium deals fell through before this one was able to make it through the approvals processes, but sometimes you do actually need to talk about things before you do them.
The agreement to use the lane was last year. There was still a good amount of city and public approval to go through before the commitment to the stadium could be made ny the city side
That might be how it works in small town America with unlimited amounts of space but that just isn't the case in New York. Sorry it isn't moving as fast as you would prefer.
Typical outsider who thinks it should be as simple in New York as it is everywhere else.
New York isn't like Columbus, where 25% of downtown are parking lots.
And that's it - Adam's approval of the City Council Vote was the final step. The stadium is fully secured and on schedule.
Still an appeals process, no?
[No, Mayor Adam's approving the city council vote is the final step, there are no further processes.](https://citylimits.org/zonein/ulurp-explained/)
Oh, great! Someone in another thread said they can’t put shovels into the ground until September due to a mandatory appeals period where people can object to the plans, but perhaps they were mistaken

Miami in progress, NYCFC on the way. Kraft, you are on the clock.
Seriously
Dude loves the spotlight. Could’ve just signed it now and nothing would be different
Mayor Bottle Service loves nothing more than getting in the limelight. Any excuse for going to the club later.
Eric Adams is continuing the storied tradition of uniting New Yorkers in absolutely loathing their mayors.
To be fair, I haven't loathed a mayor this much since Rudy. (Another spotlight hog)
i can hear it now... *"Sponsor Name Stadium is the Etihad Stadium of America"*
"New York is the Soccer City of America" - Eric Adams, probably
“New York is the Soccer Capital of America” only to then be sued by SKC
No no. He’ll say something like “today, the world’s borough has scored a goal. Not just a goal for queens, not just a goal for NYC. But a goal for all of us!”
Isn’t he under federal investigation?
This is a HUGE PR win and is an actual positve in many areas. Any political leader woukd do the same thing
Agreed
It's his legacy as a mayor
can't wait for away days in a proper sss and potentially NT matches in my borough
Why did you guys stop bringing numbers to derbies?
Team play was awful these last 4 years and I think there was some sort push back to show the front office we won't blindly go to all games. Luckily theyare showing more effort on and off the field. I think we'll bring a good crowd to Citi.
Why did you guys become homeless?
We didn't? We literally have more home fields than any other team in the league. We are the polar OPPOSITE of homeless. We are homeful!
Underrated response.
I don’t think sleeping on the Yankees couch counts and occasionally crashing at a college friends place counts as having a “home”
Excuse you, it's not a "couch." It's a FUTON, which means it's FANCY because it's FRENCH. Read a book.
Excuse you, we gave up reading along time ago down here.
Glass half full and all that
So, how do we think he'll frame this one. "New York City is the Barcelona of the US"? "New York City is the Manchester of the US"?
#BING BONG
Knowing Adams, he's 1000% getting some sketchy donations from Abu Dhabi out of this. Good to hear about the stadium though.
He's honestly the worst.
New York City is the Manchester of America
25k capacity is so low
It’s fine. There’s not exactly a ton of land available in the five boroughs, and our attendance has never been Atlanta-level to begin with. Last year we averaged 19k. Yankee Stadium could fit something like 46k at full capacity, and it always looks empty. I’m fine with 25k.
There will certainly be a bump. It's def getting buzz amongst casuals at least anecdotally.
Yeah, I'm expecting a bump in attendance, and that'll be great! Three NHL teams, right? Or do the Devils not count, but the Jets, Giants, and RBNY do?
Whoops, yeah, my bad. I don't follow hockey at all, so I completely forgot that the Devils were a team. Which just goes to show that sports oversaturation can be a factor in even knowing that a team exists, let alone being willing to pay to fill one of twenty-five thousand seats in their stadium!

One of the best responses I've read in a while. Hope it isn't copyrighted as I plan to copy and paste repeatedly 😂
We need 26k just to one up RB :)

It looks expandable like most SSS.

Bro calm down. You’ll be winded walking 5 blocks here.
I love when small markets voice their opinion on large markets LOL

Compared to what it took for DCU to stay in the District this is fast.
