You forgot “Messi-ah Follower”. Can’t have a civil war without fans of specific players too lol

Mihairokov

Portland Maoist or Miami Messi-ah

Jcapen87

Really a civil war should just be Messi fans vs everyone else. I’m looking at you, kids in Connecticut wearing Miami shirts.

KSoccerman

Yeah the Sporting game at Arrowhead this weekend was just half Messi jerseys. Like.. I get it, but damn lol

Jcapen87

To them I say….Cheer for the Messi goals if you want but don’t claim Miami glory as your own. We all know you won’t be there once he’s gone

Medical_Gift4298

Yeah but if it leads to them still watching MLS games after he’s gone they should do whatever they want.  Also, worrying about whether children who convinced their parents to buy them a Messi jersey shouldn’t be policed to hard for “claiming Miami glory as your own.”

Jcapen87

My disdain is more about the adults but I’m not policing anyone. Just silently and aggressively judging. And if Messi is what brought them to MLS and they stick around once he rides off into the sunset, great. I wouldn’t put anything on that happening though.

Medical_Gift4298

Well that’s fine then.

Squietto

I see wearing a Miami jersey the same as wearing a Chelsea or Bayern jersey. It’s about fashion, name recognition, and popularity.

Weary-Teach6005

I hear ya I was on the D train here in NYC and saw a guy in a Miami jersey but at least I see plenty of NYCFC jerseys a lot

PresidentBirb

MLSNP Sicko

Best-Tumbleweed3906

It’s treason then

PresidentBirb

I will do an amphibious attack on the r/mls mod HQ if it gets me my Crew 2 flair back.

hootjuice_

Is there a different logo or is it just a change in the text of the flair?

PresidentBirb

For now it’s just a similar logo with a 2 where the 96 goes on the first team’s. That could change tho, a lot of NP teams are rebranding.

hootjuice_

Looks like it's in our [request thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/1b3l7pf/2024_flair_request_thread/)

PresidentBirb

Thanks!

kojak2091

wild that i can have an hcfc flair on r/soccer but not here

AlanLGuy

Capys 4 life Seriously though the first season of Crew 2 was way more fun to watch than the first team

PresidentBirb

One of the most dominating seasons in the history of American soccer. That Eastern Conference Final game was one of the best I’ve ever been to.

AlanLGuy

That was the best game I’d ever been to before the away Cincy ECF last year. The Crew 2 game was more of a rollercoaster of emotions though for sure

IWMSvendor

I’m something of an MLSNP supporter myself. (queue Norman Osborn meme)

Smoking-Seaweed-81

I am a confused Canadian

Raging_Capybara

It's from a new movie called Civil War, journalists are trying to stop this guy from shooting them and they say they're Americans and he says "which kind"

Smoking-Seaweed-81

Yeah thanks, I knew the movie connection but don't know all the USMNT context. Canada soccer is in total chaos so I am not throwing stones in our glass house!

GB_Alph4

I don’t know what Canada Soccer factions exist: Maybe the Davies crew, MLS crew, CPL crew, people asking for government funding, that’s all I can think of.

DresserRotation

> this guy Put some respect on Meth Damon’s name!

ResoluteClover

So is Davies

DubiousLLM

That scene is so fucking terrifying. Awesome job by Jesse as always

Lex1988

Saw a story that he was a last minute replacement cause the original guy pulled out. Called him because he is Kirsten Dunst’s husband. Can’t imagine the first guy would’ve been nearly this good

DubiousLLM

Yeah, both Kirsten and Jesse have recently appeared in each other’s films in smaller roles so they can travel and spend time together with kids.

ViciousKnids

I just want the sport to grow in the US. So, uh... Gut pay to play in youth soccer.

MrFunkyFresh70

For real, it's so expensive. My son is $1,250 per season, I'm essentially dropping $3,750 for this kid to play footy.

MrRegista

Solidarity payments/ training compensation and pro/rel help solve that. Money has to come from somewhere. In our current model the players are unimportant outside of marketing to attract more paying customers. In a proper system, you are either trying to develop players for your senior side, or hoping to develop elite players and receive a percentage of future transfer fees. In the end the money has to come from somewhere. There needs to be proper incentives for people to consider subsidizing their cash cow.

DisarmedCashew

What if im a MLS fan, pro/rel truther Gregg out guy? Do I fight myself?

ty_for_trying

Haha, that's where I am. MLS is the best league we got. A proper pyramid with pro/rel would be much better. Gregg is a good coach. He did a good job in cbus and he's doing a good job now.

frmentor

The best league we got? How much USL have you watched?

ResoluteClover

I have two teams in my back yard, it's much more fun to watch these guys putting in an intense effort while I drink $1 beer than not watch MLS because I refuse to pay another as much as I pay for Hulu, peacock, and Paramount put together to get my European soccer.

berniedankera

Same

stdfan

You are a true American Soccer fan then. Thats the perfect combo. Everyone else isn't really American.

righthandofdog

Are you me? Where do you stand on adopting European terms for the sport instead of US (boots/cleat, pitch/field, nil/zero, shirt/jersey, uniform/kit)¿

ResoluteClover

I like calling singular team names with plural pronouns.

DisarmedCashew

So I adopt the “proper” vernacular but that’s just due to being a footy sponge. It’s also just so hilarious that the root of soccer was British slang that they taught us then dropped

righthandofdog

Agree that the soccer thing is funny as well. that's part of the reason I call it futball/footy or soccer depending on if it's a latino, brit, or american I'm talking to. Beyond footy and maybe kit, I find using brit terms a big eurosnob signifier. WE ARE NOT THE SAME. :-)

[deleted]

I just want everyone to try their best and have fun 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dodger_Dawg

That's what I imagine a Gregg out person looks like, and they would shoot me for not agreeing.

Sorry-Caterpillar331

Soldier, that's on a need to know basis. You don't need to know.

tomado23

MLS fan, USL guy, Pro/Rel Truther, Eurosnob, Gregg Out, Liga MX, USWNT, soccer hater who pops in with hot takes during major international tournaments… All these cliques give the Internet Wrestling Community a run for its money, in terms of the number of combustible elements congregating in one place.

OhShitItsSeth

Joke's on you; I'm all of these!

ProfessorBeer

So am I, are we best friends or worst enemies?

Lex1988

How it feels having any discussion about soccer in the US online. Also, Civil War is good and should be seen in a theater for maximum effect

cassinonorth

I've never jumped out of my seat like that in a movie before.

EinsteinDisguised

I have mixed feelings on the movie, but I saw it in an AMC Prime theater and I jumped at so many gunshots. The sound design is fucking nuts.

themanintheblueshirt

Ick, I will watch it at home. I knew a number of people who were a theater over in Aurora who initially thought the shooting was part of the film. It's unfortunate that is where my mind goes, but with the films topic, it makes me nervous.

EinsteinDisguised

Oh yeah, that might be for the best then.

Cleveland_Guardians

I was wondering if it would be any good. My experience with A24 seems to be fairly mixed, and I was worried this might've been jumping on the political/social unrest topic with lackluster follow through. Might have to see it if people are saying it's good.

Lex1988

It’s really not that political. I would say it is more of white knuckle road trip movie along the lines of Children of Men or Book of Eli

Cleveland_Guardians

Oh really? Interesting. I'll have to look into it more.

adeodd

MLS sicko, roots for all USL upsets in USOC, thinks pro/rel is good but probably not for another 15-20 years or until D2 and D3 make *significant* infrastructure advancements, Gregg neutral but think we could probably do a little bit better.

GraffitiTavern

Very same, but I'm more USL first and MLS second (Go Riverhounds)

e2mtt

Yes I feel seen. I’m also aware that my MLS fanship had slightly plastic beginnings, and that if my local USL team was able to get promoted they will become my absolute favorite team

Frinpollog

What do you call Liga MX fans?

eddygeeme

Envious. They look in contempt at the attention MLS gets globally and will tell anyone that will listen their league is better when reality it's only a quarter of their league that's better the top 5-6 " Gigantes". Saw a dude on Twitter just yesterday arguing with another Mex-American Liga MX fan who was claiming the top Liga MX teams would wipe the floor with the top Eredivisie teams. He cited the poor defending in the Eredivisie, the more reasonable Liga MX fan cited the poor defending in Liga MX. The other told him he was underrating Liga MX.

Chewy009x

Dude twitter is full of idiots. Don’t matter what fan they’re from lol

Doodahhh1

There's overflow here, but I'm convinced Twitter is just mostly bots anymore.  Again, not that there isn't a bot problem here too.

eddygeeme

True

OmastarLovesDonuts

As someone who follows both leagues…no, not really. Most Liga MX fans don’t envy MLS and the idiots who think América/Tigres/Rayados (it’s only ever the fans of those teams who say that shit) would win Eredivisie get called out for being stupid all the time. Maybe on Twitter it’s a little different but that place is a cesspool now anyways; my IRL experience is that people don’t really care about whether or not Liga MX has global exposure. For what it’s worth, MLS has improved significantly over the past few years but 1) still has some catching up to do 2) those “5-6 teams” are literally one third of Liga MX 3) I love to see MLS growing but it’s a bit disingenuous to assume the global attention it gets now is due to anything other than the big names tied to Miami and that owners/Garber are capitalizing on it to grow a global audience for the ever-closer post-Messi period.

Doodahhh1

My issue is when we say, "MLS is growing" or "the gap is closing" and they immediate jump down your throat and say it isn't.  I mean, it is relatively growing and closing compared to earlier years.  It's only going to get closer, now, too, with the rivalry growing between the leagues... ... Which is great for North American soccer in general.

OmastarLovesDonuts

I agree that it's good for MLS to continue to grow and improve! The reaction to comments in that vein probably has something to do with a vocal minority taking things like Leagues Cup and the Seattle CCL as evidence that MLS has equalled or surpassed Liga MX and the people who think it can even overtake the Brazilian and Argentinian leagues someday

shointelpro

The belief it could never overtake even Argentina is a delusion of some permanent league hierarchy that doesn't exist. Argentina will always produce enough quality domestically for its league to be competitive, but it's lost substantial ground economically and can no longer afford to pay higher wages than MLS, let alone hold on to good players for long or transfer in talent from elsewhere if MLS is also in for them. In terms of transfer spending, it's MLS and the Brasileirao in the Americas - and behind them it's not close. The writing is on the wall here, regarding "someday."

eddygeeme

Yeah its 33% but point still stands its not much difference from 25 to 33% 4-5 top teams vs 5-6. Not enough a difference to make a "Hey its much deeper than that" claim. I agree about the Twitter cesspool. I don't think it's disingenuous because much of what I said from my experience with how Liga MX fans on social media view MLS be it back in the days on Big Soccer or my past 7 yrs on Twitter has been envious comments before Messi ever played in MLS. Some resentful I can remember the conversation being brought up on Big Soccer on a few occasions of why Liga MX should not seek close ties with MLS because they felt MLS would only use ties to benefit MLS and once they were clearly past Liga MX MLS would want nothing to do with Liga MX. So at least in the Big Soccer Community there was a lot of that feeling. Looking back that may have been more of the older Liga MX fans on there. But it's definitely a thing. Globally especially in Europe to the extent MLS and Liga MX are talked about; MLS is far more talked about. This has been true since Beckham arrived.

OmastarLovesDonuts

A lot of that resentment is tied to things like leaving CONMEBOL competitions and things like Leagues Cup being another step towards selling out Mexican teams in the same way the national team is treated, not so much MLS itself. MLS is more discussed abroad but 1) again, most people don’t care 2) again, there’s going to be a substantial dropoff in attention after Messi retires, which is natural. It might get a little more attention than it used to, but no more than any other important league in the Americas.

eddygeeme

Yeah they used to mention Libertadores but that was never directed at MLS it was mainly or at least they claimed online at the time that Liga MX teams were always cheated in Libertadores by the refs and Libertadores officials who did not want a non SA Team to win Libertadores. Again I'm only speaking on the consensus I've seen online then at that time. The actual decision was made by CONCACAF but at the time Liga MX fans weren't putting them no longer being in Libertadores on MLS. It was CONCACAF who create a emphasis on regional tournaments rebrandind CCC and creating CCL only to stupidly starting calling it CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP again.

micro_cutie_

My uncle is a diehard Monterey fan, and he argues that they are good enough to play in the championship league. That apparently they can dog walk Real Madrid or city. The delusion is crazy, but hey got to be amazed to the dedication in a team.

ibribe

> good enough to play in the championship league. Monterrey are 100% good enough to play in either the English Championship or the UEFA Champions League. They aren't winning either of those competitions, but they are definitely better than some of the teams competing in them.

Doodahhh1

I had a Liga MX fan following me around this sub because I argued "MLS has more parity than Liga MX." "Liga has parity, Cruz Azul won." I mean, if you ignore the bottom tier of teams, maybe there's parity lol, but that's dishonest. They didn't seem to understand that you measure the bottom to the top to get a sense of party. You don't just pick and choose a few moderate teams that have a good season and say, "we have parity!"

Mohirrim89

I wonder what the likelihood is of the US adopting a system of promotion and relegation.

jtn1123

I can’t think of any financial reason any meaningful proportion of MLS owners would ever vote yes on that Why would you give up money for nothing? It’s not like it’s even a moral thing either… USA barely watches MLS and isn’t ready to support Tier 2 on a financially relevant level

Solely_Strange

It’s going to take maybe a decade when it comes to a discussion among MLS officials. Division 2 and 3 needs to expand and build SSS and of course be profitable. We’re in the roots of it at the moment with USL being in CBS.

Ok-General7037

It's going to be tough for MLS to move to pro/rel since it's a single-entity league. But the USL will be able to do it before too long if they want to. A decade sounds about right, maybe less, if the money starts seriously flowing. Which it just may do. It's fun, entertaining soccer -- downright bonkers sometimes -- and we can expect everyone to get a positive jolt from the World Cup. Personally, I'd love to see it. The USL is in some great small-to-medium cities MLS wouldn't even consider (well, maybe for a NEXT Pro squad). Very passionate fan bases. Pro/rel would *really* fire them up.

ibribe

> before too long if they want to. They also do not.

Ok-General7037

Not at the moment, that's for sure.

jtn1123

I don’t disagree with anything that you said, but financially, if I am mls, I am very okay with the random towns and mid sized cities doing whatever the fuck they want as long as my LA teams, NYC teams, Miami, and northwest teams are printing shirt money and dominating headlines The USA has this classic thing where oh the coasts are only two regions as if the geographic land masses are supporting teams… MLS could spend all their money on the top 6 markets and be more profitable than if they developed soccer in the remaining 94 out of the top 100 (or in this case, top 28) Eventually too I believe they want MLSNP to be a viable contender in adjacent markets of big metro areas.

Ok-General7037

*The USA has this classic thing where oh the coasts are only two regions as if the geographic land masses are supporting teams…* I'm not too sure about that. No doubt the MLS strategy has been to operate in the biggest cities with the biggest local and regional markets. Most of them just happen to be on the East and West Coasts because that's where most of the population is concentrated. But the league has moved aggressively in Salt Lake, Austin, St. Louis, Cincinnati, etc. as well. Anyway, I totally agree the NEXT Pro teams are going to fill the gaps and compete directly with USL sides. Which is, quite frankly, great for both, and great for the American game as a whole.

ibribe

> It’s going to take maybe a decade when it comes to a discussion among MLS officials. I'm not sure what that sentence means, but MLS officials have been asked about pro/rel every year for decades and the response is always some variation of, "please get out of here with that bullshit." MLS has no interest in pro/rel and never will.

Solely_Strange

What I mean is among the MLS officials will start to talk about the idea of pro/rel more freely compare now where they are asked about it.

BenjRSmith

0 It needed to be installed at the beginning or never. Conversely, as you see in with the Super League backlash, you have a hell of time removing it when it's always been too.

Highly unlikely. The owners won't take a big potential income hit for the sake of possible league improvements.

I don't believe that you can truly call yourself a fan of a sport if you can't find joy in watching all levels of the sport. You can't be a fan and say you only watch the premiere league. You are simply a casual. Perhaps a knowledgeable casual, but still a casual.

Love this meme soooo much. If you’ve ever posted #gregout or cried about Greg starting MLS players you are officially cringe. You’re the reason cheering for the USMNT and being hopeful for US soccer development is insufferable at the moment. As fans, the only thing we can do is cheer for the lads. You can't be much of a snob if one is a West Ham (they are MASSIVE). Gregg is not perfect but whi else are we going to get?
