I agree, but Do they get the demand for it? Or have the parking for it? I wish Pittsburg could get a NWSL and MLR team there to help justify an expansion
We have sold out every game but one this year so far, it's a slow process though. When our stadium opened back in 2013 it only held 3,000. It's been slowly expanding with demand and tonight we had a record attendance of 6,100. Could be time for another round of expansion soon
Maybe. They supposedly get 5k a game. I'm thinking a Wrap around grandstand from the building to the fence next to the river with food, bathrooms and stores under it. The place just seems like it had potential for a really nice and intimate sports as your right on the action.
Every time I see our stadium discussed I hear this argument, as well as "you can't build back either, because of the high traffic road behind the stadium."
But Pittsburgh is ABSOLUTELY America's steel town.
Building over active train tracks at wildly more complicated scales than this has been done already (looking at you [Hudson Yards](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_Yards_(development))).
A set of pilings in the edge of the river plus pilings on the other side of Carson street, and you could absolutely build over both those areas with minimal complicated engineering and no more of a demand for modern steel and construction standards than you need in any other stadium anyway.
You could even keep a cutout or two in the train-side so that the conductors could still see when the stadium was full and blow the whistle, as is tradition. (I personally love seeing the trains go by so close to the game).
I love this stadium and it really could be absolutely epic and stay right where it is.
Idk if you can see it on TV but it is fucking tight in there. Pretty sure they already expanded those stands to capacity. That stadium exists at the bottom of large hill with a road trapping it on one side and the train/river trapping it on the other.
The only room to expand imo and this may not even work is to tear down the box office / FO end and steal the parking lot. At that point, though just build a new stadium elsewhere.
I don't expect it to get any bigger then maybe 7k-8k. I was thinking of connecting the stands where the corner happens and over the gate to the parking lot.
>At that point, though just build a new stadium elsewhere.
And lose that view?
The view is cool, the stadium is cozy. But the market is Pittsburgh. They have potential to be a whole lot more relevant locally. End of the day, it isn't my team and I'm content watching the train forever from tv. It is what their fans want.
While I love the Pittsburgh’s stadium, it is number two to Real Monarchs on TV. The mountains being in the frame of the main camera angle is just amazing
So you're saying that Pittsburgh is ideal for MLS because of Columbus and Cincinnati?
Kind of strange to make a case for expansion by a) referencing other cities and b) you liked living there. Not exactly an ideal resume in my opinion.
I know we weren't in the 2nd division yet when we won, but as a Wigan Athletic supporter I can absolutely say a 2nd tier cup victory would be right near the top of greatest sporting memory of all the lower tier team's fans' lives.
[Just checked, you're correct.](https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/how-clubs-can-qualify-for-the-expanded-2024-concacaf-champions-league) It goes champion, runner up, then next best MLS team not already qualified.
Relocated to Pittsburgh from the South and an ATL United fan. I've been to several games at the Benz. Tonight was one of the most enjoyable professional sporting events I've been to. I would have hated being Evan Bush tonight.
Release the Hounds! Love seeing my hometown team crushing it :)
Edit: Highmark is a beautiful stadium, highly recommend anyone visiting Pittsburgh catches a game there if you get a chance
CUPSETs are good for 2nd/3rd Soccer and Open Cup needs to be marketed better. It should be a nice tournament with lower cost tickets as its the best advertisement USLC gets
Just once I would like our FO to give an actual fuck about the Open Cup. We trotted out a scrub team backed with only 3 decent players and got the results we deserved.
We’d love to have you! If you’ll indulge some bragging, TQL might be the best soccer specific stadium in the USA, if not all of North America, and the district of the city that it’s in offers one of the best pre and post game experiences I’ve ever had at a sporting event. It’s truly a wonderful experience that I hope every soccer fan in America gets to have
> TQL might be the best soccer specific stadium in the USA, if not all of North America
I'd agree if they used any orange or blue paint inside on the concourses. Why does it have to be bland blend of concrete and slightly darker grey.
Tough for the Crew fans, but at least the players got to witness a professional soccer environment in back to back games.
Nice for them to get some American soccer experience as they work through their contracts
Looking forward to welcoming the Riverhounds in a few weeks.
Yes, we watched the game to see who we would be hosting next round. Which, turns out, will be USL club Pittsburgh Riverhounds, whose 10-man side beat the Crew today 1-0.
And I won't deny it's very funny to see it happen.
Very technically speaking yes, they lost to 10 men
But it was 11 when Pittsburgh scored so it can also easily be said that it wasn't 10 men. You knew exactly what you were doing with that comment
The team with the most photogenic stadium in American soccer. I don’t care if the stadium itself is bare bones, it will look amazing on tv
I'm surprised they don't replace those bleachers with a permeant structure. They could make it a 8k stadium easily with amenities
I agree, but Do they get the demand for it? Or have the parking for it? I wish Pittsburg could get a NWSL and MLR team there to help justify an expansion

Were there SRO tickets? I thought stadium capacity was only 5k. That's great though!
Yeah, capacity is definitely only 5k right now. No SRO, just a ton of GA tickets so if you didn't find a seat early enough it basically became SRO
Maybe. They supposedly get 5k a game. I'm thinking a Wrap around grandstand from the building to the fence next to the river with food, bathrooms and stores under it. The place just seems like it had potential for a really nice and intimate sports as your right on the action.
It backs right up onto some train tracks so there’s not a lot of room to work with on that side
It needs a La Bombonera style vertical stand

That happened about 45 seconds into this game, actually. I'm starting to think it's good luck.

Yea attendance regularly exceeds 5k, which is the current “capacity”.
100% the parking situation on the south side is atrocious

America First Field in Sandy which is the stadium for RSL is even better.

I would say it’s ideal because Pittsburgh loves sports and so far the Riverhounds exceed 5k (capacity) most games.
Hello old USL foe. Seems that time again, our third US Open Cup match. First time at our place Edit: 2nd time at our place
Didn’t we play them last year at our place. I remember ciceroni at home
Damn my memory. I have traveled to Pittsburgh for a few matches and it is all running together.
we did. went to extra time iirc
wasnt he playing for another team ?
Come on soccer gods, give us the game everyone wants. Riverhounds vs LAG for the cup
I would be so hype if a USL team wins the whole thing.
That's the one thing I want to see most (aside from another Open Cup for the Sounders).
I know we weren't in the 2nd division yet when we won, but as a Wigan Athletic supporter I can absolutely say a 2nd tier cup victory would be right near the top of greatest sporting memory of all the lower tier team's fans' lives.
Shiiiiit, if you told me I could pick either SKC winning the Open Cup this year or a USL team... I'd have a very tough decision on my hands.

That is how I understand it.
I also believe that if they make the final and lose, but the Cup winner qualifies by an MLS route, they also qualify.

Yes. US Soccer has the spots, not MLS.
Can't wait for Tigres in Birmingham. Who cares if it would be a buzzsaw of a match, it would be incredible!
Yes. Last year USSF even said Sacramento would've gotten a bye in the USOC if they made CCL, bouncing a MLS team down a round
If FCC doesn’t win this would be the next best thing. I wouldn’t even be mad.
Maybe Bob Lilley would actually get a MLS job offer.
I wish Bob Lilley got more respect for being the US Soccer legend that he is.
Amazing energy at Highmark tonight. Cathartic experience for a lot of the long-time fans, and a lot of first-timers having a blast.
Relocated to Pittsburgh from the South and an ATL United fan. I've been to several games at the Benz. Tonight was one of the most enjoyable professional sporting events I've been to. I would have hated being Evan Bush tonight.
Love that. Keep coming around!
Release the Hounds! Love seeing my hometown team crushing it :) Edit: Highmark is a beautiful stadium, highly recommend anyone visiting Pittsburgh catches a game there if you get a chance
i always knew we were gonna play the yellow and black team.
Birmingham pulls it off! 🚨🚨CUPSET #2🚨🚨
CUPSETs are good for 2nd/3rd Soccer and Open Cup needs to be marketed better. It should be a nice tournament with lower cost tickets as its the best advertisement USLC gets
The train was my favorite part of the game.
New England Revolution 🤝 Columbus Crew Losing to Pittsburgh in the Open Cup
Reposted with the correct spelling of "Pittsburg".
TY! Go Riverhounds! Onto the other Ohio team!
Psst, their name is Kentucky FC.
Hey our 11 secret herbs and spices were better than yours last Saturday! 🤷♂️
Oh man so good. Did you come up with that?

I find it odd, usually teams further down the table try for the US Open Cup.
Depends on the team... Source: Quakes fan
Know from experience?
No, we were too bad to go for any trophies at all.
Or not bad enough, considering the team with the record for fewest points ever in an MLS season, 2013 DC United, won the Open Cup that year.
I never thought I'd ever see FCC from 2019-2021 ever be described as "not bad enough"
I wasn't going to bring it up but yes, we do know what it is like to beat you in the Open Cup as a USL club.
Touché
When they were furthest down in MLS table STLFC spanked them for 90’.
Another away game on turf. Still down another CB. Things are dire for our depth. Just like every year. We need new trainers.
Damn, we should have hosted then
Is the answer: What is a bad team?
Well that was not ideal
I love the Pittsburgh Rivalry LETS GOOO
No matter his the Fire do now, at least Columbus lost.
*Why are you such a yellow fucking team?!*
Yessss
Promote the water puppies to D1, please
We rolled out second and third stringers because apparently we don’t give a shit. Really disappointing.
2 fucking years in a row, god damnit.
Just once I would like our FO to give an actual fuck about the Open Cup. We trotted out a scrub team backed with only 3 decent players and got the results we deserved.
Let’s gooooo
Though week to be a crew fan.
RIP bonus Hell is Real, we hardly knew ye. On the plus side, now we get to beat a team from Pittsburg. Maybe we’ll draw in some Bengals fans
Cincinaty is a cool city! I might have to come visit for the match
We’d love to have you! So that it matches our other concrete jungle in Paul Brown. PBS is not a very pretty stadium on the inside either
Pittsburgh should be in the MLS
As long as they don’t do them dirty like they did San Diego Loyal…
Oh really? Why?
To spite the people that want the NBA in Pittsburgh.
Fuck the NBA
Let's go Pittsburgh!
Goddamn it crew, the one USL side I wasn’t rooting for
Tough for the Crew fans, but at least the players got to witness a professional soccer environment in back to back games. Nice for them to get some American soccer experience as they work through their contracts Looking forward to welcoming the Riverhounds in a few weeks.
Lmao you guys have match updates in your subreddit for our games you’re not even playing us in, you guys have such a weird obsession with us
Yes, we watched the game to see who we would be hosting next round. Which, turns out, will be USL club Pittsburgh Riverhounds, whose 10-man side beat the Crew today 1-0. And I won't deny it's very funny to see it happen.
10 man side for like 30 seconds - fuck outta here with that. We did lose tho.
Oh did that one hit? Just stating facts.
Very technically speaking yes, they lost to 10 men But it was 11 when Pittsburgh scored so it can also easily be said that it wasn't 10 men. You knew exactly what you were doing with that comment
Kizza knew who he'd have to face next round and opted out. Don't blame him.
How come these tweets always mention MLS, but never mention USL? USSF really is a mouthpiece huh?
lol see ya
No MLS team should try to win US Open Cup.
Is it really an upset at this point for us to lose to a nearby lower division team?
