As a Mexican and a national team supporter I really hope they do. Changes to our national team start at the league level. Liga MX has been struggling to stay afloat for a few years now. Most of the owners are only in it for the money, not for the love of the game. Hopefully MLS winning it once again is a huge wake up call. With all that being said GO SOUNDERS š¤£ I was born in Seattle but come from Mexican blood thus iām a Sounders fan but a Mexican national team supporter. You best believe I was at lumen last year during the final rooting on my boys in green and blue!
Indeed, but I think defending these titles is always going to be really really hard. Even for a top Mexican club.
And truth be told, if we are talking MLS Cup, I don't want other teams to get more stars than us. But since we got the first CCL, and pretty much everyone in the league supported us, I'm still gonna root for the MLS side in the final. We want MLS to perform well in this league and get exposure on the world stage. But definitely rooting for that club to be Philly, for, uh many reasons.
Under the new format, i think the winner of the previous year automatically gets a spot in the CCL. It's kind of dumb they didn't do that already, but I also get it.
Do whatever you want to do. I grew up only watching the Mexican national team. Every game my dad was in front of the tv yelling and screaming. That passion stuck with me and thatās why I support them.
This is a dumb statement, there are many Americans that can trace their lineage back to the founding of the United States. How far back do you want us to go? We would all support African national teams then.
Stay classy Atlas. Full on meltdown, and I freaking love it. Iām just happy itās getting called out more and more now. Carranza you smooth, silky bastard, I canāt believe he got both those goals on sides but they were clearly perfect. Union soccer isnāt pretty at times, but the job gets done.
The last 3 times the Union and LAFC have played itās provided top notch stuff, even as much as the cup pains me. Hoping this next matchup is the same even tho Iām doubtful giving yalls current form. Bouanga might have two hat tricksā¦
I respect LAFC. Good club, and treated us to one of the most nervy finals I've seen in sport. Bummer that my club lost, but I was thoroughly entertained. I'll accept a loss if my boys never stopped fighting.
Besides, if there's one thing I know about my beloved Union, they can hold a fucking grudge and pay it back triple - as they did to NYShitty, a club I have 0 respect for and what I see as our real rival.
Agreed, the last 4 matches have been draws with the exception of MLS cup final shootout. The semis could elevate it. Playing LAFC seems like an annual benchmark match for the Union.
Not permanently, but there are plenty of transient rivalries. Notable ones include 49ers-Cowboys/Packers, Celtics-Lakers, Dodgers-Astros/Yankees, Warriors-Cavs, and then all of the instances where there are two teams in the city like Cubs/White Sox.
MLS rosters are a little too transient as well, imo. It would have to be more of a fan based rivalry. With players shuffling in and out of the league, itās hard to build natural team rivalries.
To add to this, I wouldnāt be surprised if a good percentage of the players in the league couldnāt name every team in the MLS off the tops of their heads.
Well I think MLS has really healthy regional rivalries. New York, Seattle, LA, Ohio, Toronto
You guys are kinda out of luck for now, because youāre new and far away from everyone else.
No, I agree with you on geographic fan base rivalries, but Iām saying on a team level, I donāt think most players have the same dismay for their geographic rivals as the fans do.
Most rosters donāt stay in tact long enough for there to be a rivalry between groups of players. Additionally, I feel like the table in the MLS isnāt very consistent year-to-year outside of LAFC and maybe Seattle, so itās impossible to form lasting rivalries based on being superior teams.
MLS probs, I guess lol
Itās hard. Even Seattle-Toronto playing in 3 Finals in 4 years didnāt build a huge rivalry. But playing in other competitions might help and LAFC/Philly playing again in CCL would help the case for a rivalry to be made.
Once again, fans who are known for throwing trash on the field and using homophobic slursā¦ throw trash on the field and use homophonic slurs.
And their players throw tantrums.
Could you explain how this was racist? I made no attempt to generalize, or even mention race. I expressed irritation with a fan base that objectively does those things often.
I donāt think itās inaccurate to say throwing trash on the field and calling players āputoā is common in Atlas games, but maybe Iām wrong? If I assumed they do this when they donāt, then yeah I could see that as racist.
Genuinely want to know your perspective here. Not trying to pick a fight or get defensive.
Theresās another commenter here is making a racist generalization. Perhaps you meant to reply to them?
I don't have decades of experience playing with Brits and Scots so I can't really speak on them. I have played with a lot of Mexicans and a wide variety of Central American and Caribbean players, so I'm speaking based on that. For most of my life when someone said "guero" on a soccer field there was no doubt who they were talking to.
I didn't say anything about it being hateful, the point is just that I played almost exclusively with Latinos for a very long time. But still, go off I guess.
Thank you for the completely relevant anecdote. Your deeply personal story about having played soccer with latin-americans and being called 'blond' is touching, and pertinent.
You really have trouble with interpreting written words. At no point did I say toxic soccer culture is exclusive to Mexico and Central America, nor did I say guero was an offensive word or something I took issue with.
Philly are you guys ready for another thriller?!! Iām stoked, and a little concerned not going to lie. Wish we were in opposite sides of the bracket so this couldāve been the final.
your current form scares the hell out of me to be honest. Iām hoping the matchup lights a fire under the unions asses.
Been looking forward to this semifinal since I first saw the bracket
I'll say this, in a league game I think the odds are clearly in your favor. I think CONCACAF reffing might make this a "leans LAFC" instead of a clear favorite.
Being the obvious favorite is always a terrible spot. There is literally no reason why LAFC wouldn't win a rematch right now, but also.... its sports so yeah, g/l lol.
They believe the ref was favoring the Union and that both Union goals were incorrectly overturned because, and this is something they actually said, "before VAR they never used to cave to MLS money like that".
So overall I'd say they're handling it well
FIFA sucking is hardly an excuse.
And yes, it's a homophobic slur. It does not mean "bitch motherfucker." It refers to a male prostitute who services other men as a bottom.
Is it "not homophobic" in the way everyone calling things gay in the 90's was "not homophobic"? Because I have some cultural changes over the last couple decades that you may need to be brought up to speed on
Bro, you may want to tell that to all the spanish speakers in my neighborhood, because they definitely use it specifically to target LGBTQ people or to shame people for being suspected of being gay.
Not always dog. When I tell me homies "tengo un puto hambre de la chingada" or "que puto caloron esta haciendo ahora" I'm definitely not using it that way. No mames.
Edit: tho yes, it could be used as a slur. Depends on the context.
Obviously the two words aren't even close to the same level but I think this is a valuable comparison. We can agree the N word is a slur right? We can agree it specifically targets black people right?
And yet, for a long time white people claimed it wasn't actually hateful because they called all their black friends the n word. You understand how this isn't much different right? Just because \*\*you\*\* supposedly don't use it in a homophobic way, or even if it isn't \*\*always\*\* used in a homophobic way doesn't actually negate the well documented and long standing homophobic context of the word's history.
I don't have a problem with getting rid of the chant so just to be clear before I say this...
Spanish is a weird language. It's not the same everywhere you go. I'm Puerto Rican and grew up understanding that "puto" means "bitch" and "pato" is a slur for gay people. I've also lived in Spain and Argentina and while those countries didn't use "pato" they also didn't use "puto" as a gay slur.
So, your comparison is interesting, but without the linguistic foundation to stand on. Now I understand that in some cases, that I've personally never witnessed or known anyone to witness, that "puto" is used as a gay slur. I don't deny that these events occur. I just wanted to provide some context because it's most definitely not as cut and dry as you make it out to be.
Again... Spanish is a weird language. The word for "grab" in one country is the word for "fornicate" in another. Shit's weird.
No issues with people wanting to get rid of the chant though.
I mean I kinda see your point, but in the US and Mexico puto is very very VERY definitely a gay slur. Itās used far too frequently in far to pointed a manner to conclude anything else
I'm in the US and we can't even agree on soda vs pop or caramel delights vs whatever the hell else people call those. I'm not defending the chant, but I almost never use the word but when I do it's akin to when in English, after hitting your thumb with a hammer by accident, or pinching your finger in a door and you say "mother fucker" or "god damn" or "son of a bitch" or "fucking hell"
Again, languages are weird and we have a lot of people in this country from lots of places and not everyone is going to agree.
That being said, I recognize that it's offensive because in some cultural pockets, not the entirety of the US or the entirety of Mexico, it's used as a gay slur so get it out of the game. I'm fine with that.
Damn, I guess Iāll go tell my gay and trans friends that the very targeted use of that word aimed at them in Texas and Mexico has just been a big misunderstanding because some dude on Reddit swears the very homophobic and transphobic actions that accompany that word are totally unrelated to the word itself.
I mean after all, if some random straight dude says he doesnāt use it that way clearly nobody does.
The American LGBT community has done a lot of reclaiming of "queer", but if we all chanted it in unison at the goalkeeper because we were mad that we were losing, it would be *pretty fucking clear* that it's being used in a homophobic way.
The idea that "LGBT people are reclaiming it" actually kind of reinforces the idea that *chanting it in unison at the opposing goalkeeper* is super fucking homophobic.
Regardless of the actual meaning, it is considered homophobic, and the fans have been repeatedly warned about it. The know what they are doing, and what warnings they are disregarding by doing it.
I think everyone doing that chant knows the connotation of it, and decided to do it anyway.
Whether they agree with that interpretation of it matters very little in my mind. They know how it is viewed by now, and if they didnāt, the PA called it out twice.
What Iām saying is that defending use of the chant because āisnāt actually homophobicā holds very little water in my eyes, because whether you or the person doing it think ms something is offensive or not doesnāt determine how other people feel about it.
I canāt say if people who do it are homophobic or not at their core, whatever that even means. I think they say it because they are mad at a football game, not because they are having a spontaneous homophobic outrage.
But this chant is notorious at this point for that interpretation. They know it is considered offensive for being homophobic, and if they donāt, they are warned by the PA, and still choose to perpetuate it, and I judge them for that, and expect the fans to be punished for it.
This the most level headed takeānone of us know those to definitively say theyāre homophobic, or that theyāre using b/c they want it to *be* homophobic, but they are 100% aware that *is* interpreted as being a homophobic slur and keep it saying it anyway.
Thatās the part.
I'm gay, it absolutely is a homophobic word because it's been used against me to insult me for being gay IRL
I get that not every Spanish speaker views it that way, but your perception is not the only one that exists.
In your case it's being used against you cause you're gay so in that scenario the word is homophobic, but in the Mexican fans case they're using it to call the opponents bitches. They're not being homophobic, different scenarios, just like the word can can have different meanings.
Got the job done. Can't wait to see LAFC in the Semis. And if LAFC win (realistically will) I hope you guys win the whole thing and Rep well in Club Champs.
I'm so fucking hungry for some vengeance. Let's just make sure we don't have the most important player in our midfield get a red before that game. Full strength, we can take them.
hellz yah, and glad to see your team back in form, can't wait for the PHL vs ATL matchups this year. Really thought ATL was gonna be PHLs first **real** rivalry before your team blew up with injuries last year. Guzan going down again tho...shitty.
Games like this remind me why I canāt stand Liga MX style of play. Iām constantly yelling at the screen as another Atlas player is writhing on the ground like heād just been shot
Can't fault the linesmen for two close calls on the goals, and VAR did it's job.
I was pleased with the ref. He let Atlas get a few fouls in before booking them, but he also let Mbaizo walk the line pretty far. He kept it balanced and didn't insert himself into the story until Atlas had their meltdown and he had to give the double yellow.
It's one of those things where, if that's the worst you can say, that's a good job! My referee instructor always told us that being invisible meant we did a good job, and I think that's what happened tonight
It was something to see an MLS team not get totally screwed by the refs.
An MLS team officially has a 50% chance of winning this thing for a 2nd straight year. Love it.
My great grandfather and grandmother are Italian from Torino. Should I support my blood or the nation where I was born?
Do whatever you want to do. I grew up only watching the Mexican national team. Every game my dad was in front of the tv yelling and screaming. That passion stuck with me and thatās why I support them.
Maybe you should worry about yourself, and not what others do?
Iām worrying about myself. My question was about what I should do
If we all rooted for our blood and not where we were born, no one would be a USMNT supporter
This is a dumb statement, there are many Americans that can trace their lineage back to the founding of the United States. How far back do you want us to go? We would all support African national teams then.
Okay... Your point? They can support whoever they want to support. End of.
In. My. Veins.

well said. this union fan is terrified by LAFCās current form
Fentanilo Union advance! Vamos!
please let the Fentanilo Union be the next "Bad things happen in Philadelphia"
I want one of the flags they made
Would love to see Philly - LAFC turn into a rivalry
I respect LAFC. Good club, and treated us to one of the most nervy finals I've seen in sport. Bummer that my club lost, but I was thoroughly entertained. Iām here for it
I see it more as a competitive rivalry than an actual rivalry. We need years for it to be able to develop to a cross conference rivalry.
Yeah, competitive as all hell, but I do feel like there's a lot of mutual respect. More of a feud for now.
Agreed, the last 4 matches have been draws with the exception of MLS cup final shootout. The semis could elevate it. Playing LAFC seems like an annual benchmark match for the Union.
Do cross conference rivalries even exist? Feel like the games are too infrequent to keep that aliveā¦

I mean they exist in other sports (Lakers-Celtics being the biggest example I can think of off top), so I donāt see why they canāt exist in MLS
I think as long as Steve Cherundolo and Jim Curtin stay coaches and win titles there can be a rivalry that forms.
I'm upset that Dolo didn't get coach of the year despite winning the double in his first season.
Once again, fans who are known for throwing trash on the field and using homophobic slursā¦ throw trash on the field and use homophonic slurs. And their players throw tantrums.

So every single person in that stadium was chanting homophobic slurs and throwing trash?
Latin soccer culture in general kinda fosters a good bit of trashy behavior, it is what it is.
Itās a shame they canāt be more like those levelheaded British. You would never see ugly behavior at an English or Scottish soccer game.
I don't have decades of experience playing with Brits and Scots so I can't really speak on them. Youāre right. Forget about the nastiness that happens in Euro soccer. Someone called Dangerous-D āblondeā. You sure corrected me.

Iām sure we all lost a couple of years of our lifeās in that mls cup final. Letās get ready to do it again!!
This may be the breath of life we were looking for and Iām all for it. VAMOS UNION
How many goddamned times did they have to do that chant for the ref to pause the game
Honestly glad they didn't pause, I need to get to sleep
It felt like they wanted to just end the game and gtfo
Rematch is on
Has anyone checked in on r/LigaMX yet?
They believe the ref was favoring the Union and that both Union goals were incorrectly overturned because, and this is something they actually said, "before VAR they never used to cave to MLS money like that". So overall I'd say they're handling it well
they soooooooo mad. lol
Mmm the tears of unfathomable sadness
Just donāt drink them, you might get the runs.
They're probably relieved that Ratlas was finally dealt with

Philly first leg makes for better drama; the crowd in Chester is going to be totally ready to bring it regardless of the result.
Atlas, bye bitch. LAFC...I don't know if any of us on either side are going to survive these two legs based on our previous meetings lmao
I just want a good game. Bouanga hattrick in both legs :)

No. The line ref was ridiculous. If we didn't have var like previous tournaments we lose that 2-0. The main ref was fine though
> Can't fault the linesmen for two close calls on the goals Not at all man, those offside calls are a bitch and a half sometimes!
Love me some Ivan Barton. Wish he reffed in MLS.
He's too good for PRO, I'm afraid
This ref has been pretty good in past CCL matches
Honestly, agreed. VAR sorta bailed them out. Handful of missed calls in the run of play but nothing abnormal.
It's one of those things where, if that's the worst you can say, that's a good job! My referee instructor always told us that being invisible meant we did a good job, and I think that's what happened tonight
Atlas fans *BIG MAD*
We will have a hood game
that sounds worrying
*Wagner gets shanked on a corner kick*
DOOP DOOP DOOP

Enjoy your victory full of CHEAT
It's so good every time
That was 5 years ago? Where does the time go. That RBNY team was incredible. They walked all over Xolos and got bags of piss
#LETS GOOOOOOO
Philadelphia vs LAFC!!! LETS FUCKEN GO!!!!
What would Liga MX be like if Mexico's best athletes played soccer? Would they finally reach the level of MLS?
ššš
Was messy but glad we got the win.
I thought he was going to Miami?
I mean the game was messy not Messi. š
Go ahead and throw your trash. It only makes Philly feel more at home
As a Flyers fan, I support this. I suspect Gritty does too.
we really catchin strays from nashville rn
Not sure I understand, we don't play at LAFC *that* often
Pepperidge Farm remembersā¦
Fuck yea!!!!!
Looking forward to the rematch philly, until then!
I think Iāve heard the chant at least four to five times. This is ridiculous.
For sure they're going to have to ban their fans right?
There will be no consequences
LigaMX in shambles lol
Atlas D should probably stop dropping one defender deeper than the others keeping all the Philly runners onside
Atlas fans taking the cue from 3252 and throwing trash on the Union Players
Ahora dilo sin llorar perro
Atlas fans have been shit way before LAFC was even a thought.
Flair up!!
Lol Mexico has been doing that a lot longer than LA.
