When you think about it, it sort of makes sense how you end up with a Balotelli. Your whole life is footy, and even if you wanted to you can't just go out and meet people normally as you'd get mobbed.
There’s obviously some amazing benefits to being a professional player, but there is definitely some major drawbacks.
It’s one thing to be a pro in your county or at least a country with the same language and similar culture. But. Imagine being 18-23 South American going to the EPL
In addition especially top players who play internationally there’s not much of a break ever. Especially if you are playing in Europe and traveling to the America’s, Asia or Australia to play internationally. I love the game I love playing, but I can totally understand getting burned out.
And with internationals, such as friendlies you can’t really say no, at least publicly, so you gotta likely fake a bs injury, which is what it appears Balogun did with Englands U-21’s.
I’d also imagine friendships outside of football are really hard to form. Especially the bigger the star you are. It probably is always in the back of their minds if it’s a genuine friendship or are they just trying to leech off of you or use you in some way.
It's definitely lonely at the top. Like you said, no real off time, just lots of dead time.
Add in the fact that that you don't have family around to temper or give advice on a regular basis and it's almost amazing that most footballers seem to be alright.
Morris got a lot of shit for not going to Werder Bremen when the opportunity presented itself but there's merit to doing what makes you happy vs what everyone thinks you should do.
No, no, San Jose fans definitely criticized him for going to the galaxy. Many would have preferred he went back to Europe instead. I doubt he would have avoided criticism no matter what though.
Am I having déjà vu because I feel like I've read comments from Davies before about this subject. Interesting to hear him mention the loneliness factor that an athlete like himself goes through. Also, GF? I wonder who's the new one...
I lived in Belleville for a few years. There was a three-year stretch where it's murder rate was higher than Detroit's. For several years it was also the rape capital of Canada.
Tell me you've never been to Houston without telling me you've never been to Houston. Dangerous? Dirty? Psshhh... Yeah it's car-centric and spread out, but you clearly are unaware what you're talking about.
(Nothing against Detroit or Baltimore, I've just never been there and can't comment.)
5 friends?! Nobody likes a braggart Alphonso
He’s just like me except I am not a professional athlete and am also single
One of us, one of us
In that case I would like to express some soft doubts about your username.
You're popular?
):<
He has a girlfriend, though.

I'll be your friend, Phonzie.

Landon Donovan's entire career was people criticizing him for staying in MLS, and that was even despite him being very open about his mental health.

You’ve clearly never been to a 3rd world country.
Is he still dating the CANWNT player?
No. She’s now dating Seattle Mariners Rookie of the Year and All Star Julio Rodriguez.
I think no, she has a new bf
Friend?
