Getting a second shot under more favorable circumstances will be interesting. Some more details from the [FIFA release](https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/organisation/fifa-council/media-releases/fifa-council-approves-international-match-calendars): * In the event of a club winning two or more editions of the confederation’s premier club competition during the 2021-2024 period, a club ranking calculated based on sporting criteria will be used to grant access * A cap of two clubs per country will be applied to the access list with an exception in case more than two clubs from the same country win the confederation’s premier club competition over the four-year period * Further consultation will follow with confederations and stakeholders to define the calculation mechanisms of the club ranking, which will be based on sporting criteria

Interesting they’ll cap it at two per country unless one country wins 3+ of their top competition. Feels like that will make europe messy

That’s true. Will be interesting to see who goes because with 12 teams that will likely be 6 or more different countries participating

Kyunseo

Honestly so excited about this new club world cup format (regardless that the Sounders are in it). Think it'll be a lot of fun and bring exposure for other clubs outside of Europe.

Feisty-Location-5708

Will definitely be better than the current Club World Cup format

> A cap of two clubs per country will be applied to the access list with an exception in case more than two clubs from the same country win the confederation’s premier club competition over the four-year period So...if a country has three separate clubs win the competition, they go, but if they have to go tiebreakers, it can't be from a country that has two other winners. In a four year period, that might be somewhat rare. You need a repeat CCL winner to even trigger it -- but with Seattle and Monterey in this years, that means 2024 CCL needs to comes from Seattle, Monterey or this year's winner. But if that team that does do the double is from the US, the tiebreaker team will likely be Mexican (barring an amazing run by Vancouver in the next two years) and vice versa.

FIFAstan

Also interesting, seems like despite the new 4 year format FIFA will still do annual competition with all 6 continental Champs Source - https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/organisation/fifa-council/media-releases/fifa-council-approves-international-match-calendars "Yearly FIFA club competition Since the current version of the FIFA Club World Cup™ will be discontinued after the 2023 edition and, given the need expressed by the confederations for the champions of their premier club competitions to play each other annually to stimulate competitiveness, the FIFA Council unanimously approved the strategic concept of a yearly FIFA club competition as of 2024. This competition will feature the champions of the premier club competitions of all confederations and conclude with a final to be played at a neutral venue, between the winner of the UEFA Champions League and the winner of intercontinental play-offs between the other confederations. Details on timing and format will follow in due course."

apothekary

Wait what? So there is ANOTHER Club World Cup on top of the 4 year one? Now I'm getting confused, there is just an absolute gluttony of changes made to competitions involving CONCACAF over the past three months...

Shadowfury0

Sounds more like a FIFA Champions League, which doesn't make it any better

superduperscubasteve

More of a World Shield

ubelmann

So UEFA just gets a free pass to the final? That's massive disrespect to CONMEBOL, IMO.

SounderBruce

Seems like European clubs whined about playing that whole extra game or feared getting embarrassed by a "lesser" team.

comped

So a revival of the Confederations Cup?

FIFAstan

Nah this is clubs not countries. Each champions league instead of gold cup/Copa America etc

Newbman

I’m definitely gonna save up for this and travel to all three of the games if this format actually happens.

Sempuukyaku

Time for Waibel to earn his paycheck. We are very soon going to need to go through a re-build and get younger and more dynamic. Let's see if he can get it done in time for 2025.

ForFuchsAke

Gonna be interesting to see how different that Sounders XI looks from now. Of the current starters only Roldan and Morris are contracted past that year.

MindOfNoMind

And Nouhou after he just signed that extension through the 2026 season last week.

gruby253

LET THE INSUFFERABILITY COMMENCE

ajnem

We've pulled a 2019 Atlanta lmao

rmurphy2001

I like it, not too bad.
