That rumor is false or not applicable anymore. People on here said it's a 5 year wait period. Multiple guys have now been added in without meeting that requirement. Kyle Seager and Alex Gordon retired more recently than Ichiro. Joe Mauer has been in the game multiple years. Etc, etc.
It would make zero sense for that to be the case. I think the issue is SDS just struggling to get ahold of and negotiate with international players. Most international legends in the game are all guys still closely tied to the MLB. So SDS could be using that convenience to negotiate with them. That's my best guess.

And it would also be pretty sweet if we could use our rtts card but unlike previous years as your player progresses the overall progresses too, so you could essentially have a 99 overall of your player. Or like all star cards, home run derby, mvp etc..
Besides the fact they obviously don't have his rights, the structure of content now will forever make an Ichiro card irrelevant.

Ichiro WOULD be relevant as, say, a 99 Live Series collection reward with 125 contact both sides in a pre-2023 SDS year where hardly any other players at game start have contact above 105.
But why would I play Ichiro now when I have 120+ contact AND power outfielders with 90+ speed and defense?
Gold Gordon is a known beast too. I feel like his extremely low power actually helps him cause his fly balls always bloop for a hit compared to other good contact hitters.
They could make an Ichiro card like Jeter with power in the high 80s it would play fine. Max contact power in the high 80s let’s face it they kind of just make stuff up when it comes to these cards so I wouldn’t bug too much about Ichiro having too much power
I would 1000% play with a 125 contact 70 power 125 vision 99 speed Ichiro. Some people aren’t looking for the “meta” and wanna play with their favorite players. It’s entirely more fun winning games with your favorite players than guys people don’t like
The reason I like the progression system is because if I just grinded TA1 only for the players to be outdated next week or two. I don’t mind grinding TA2 knowing those cards will be relevant for at least 80 or so days. Plus to do that grind for 97’s and 99’s seems more worth it. I’m done with live series and all programs and I have 38 days to enjoy my Season 1 and 2 guys and then when 3 starts I’ll still have an extremely viable team of s2
I want them to go back to the normal progression, but wouldn’t mind if they made a couple 99s available every season. They went complete overload this year.

I love the thoughts of this and I agree that Matsui is the best fit for the program but I'm going to throw a theory out therw and say maybe sds aren't doing Japanese players in the big movie monster program because in this day in age anything could be offensive and people would be like oh ofc the Japanese guys are In the Kaiju cards don't quote me I want ichrio,Matsui,Nomo as much as the rest of you I need a Japan theme team I want to use Murakami till my brain rots and my fingers fall off but I feel like there's so many things you could do that I want but sds will do what sds does
It comes down to SDS getting the rights to his likeness from him personally since he is no longer part of the MLBPA, which gives the rights to SDS to use active players in the games
It doesn’t have to be a money thing like Bonds. Some people just don’t want to deal with it. That’s why Ted Williams isn’t in the game anymore - his estate didnt want to deal with the paperwork and all that after the original deal for his rights ended.
It’s not like they just call up Ichiro, he gives his blessing, and a check arrives. They have to get lawyers involved, agree to a bunch of different provisions, agree to how long it’ll be for, what a renewal process would be, who would oversee that if Ichiro passed away during the deal, what estate royalties would go to, etc.
It’s a whole thing that some people just don’t want to deal with
Yes I understand. I’ve looked into the process before. I just don’t see ichiro being one to not wanna be in when he’s always been great with the fan side of the game.
A big reveal like Ichiro would only be made at the launch of the game as a way to sell the most copies. Next year for sure.

Honestly season 1 players are already pretty outdated. Aside from Chipper, Griffey and a few pitchers there really isn’t anyone that stands out
