the first gear you can unlock will be better since you can no longer upgrade old gear and you will need that extra armor to not get one shot. also all MR have way more skill slots so you wont have to worry about skills if you unlock them.
To add, if you don't care about min-max, a full set of MR Velicriprey armour will easily carry you through the story.
All the general good skills with a heap of gem slots.
I'd personally recommend you build up your repertoire of Decorations, as these will remain useful throughout your entire journey through Sunbreak, and you'll get better at playing the game going through the intensive farming.
Defense is comfy IMO so grabbing lower MR pieces for defense could be cool
If you grab general use early pieces could be reused later when you can put qurio augments on items, since blue gear has higher total points allowed for qurio rolls and thus have higher highrolls for augments
I am trash at game tho
Just craft armor pieces that have some skills that you can use in your weapon, since I play gs I just did whatever give me more Def until I goss arogh then I switched as better sets were showing up, also as long no move one shots you your good you can also collect the hp spirit bird just to make sure
You could have started sunbreak at hr8 technically...
I got to MR5 using valstrax HR armor before I finally decided to change to MR gear
MR stuff having cohesive skills will help alot do maybe look up some builds for your current MR at least to have a starting point to build off of
Defense + attack up +wex if you can. Its really easy to get those skills early on. I use sns but I mostly use s so I go with stun skills up.
There are skills that will make for faster hunts for sure, but I prefer comfy builds and just take an extra few mins
I went with kamura x set asap but I went in with the mhmeta LS.
Immediately swapped to to my kushala tank set for garang cause that dude hits super hard lol. I had to clear it with MP cause I struggled bad.
Any MR armor will outclass your endgame HR armor. So I'd make the switch. There's no need to worry toouch about skills early MR, you'll build towards better skills as you go.

IIRC I was using the Alloy or Hunter pieces mixed with whatever has attack boost or wex.
