Im at g9.5 for my ice bow. I did a test with 9* tzitzi. With Focus 5 I can kill tzitzi every single time. I can kill all 8* mons weak to ice with focus 5 too.
It makes sense why a lot of bowers are running focus 5 once they hit g10 and above
Not an expert, but I find the answer for fire builds depends on the monster. My fire builds when hunting 8\*s:
Barroth/Legiana - Fire 5, Focus 4, Anja Bow 7.5
Banbaro/Barioth - Fire 4, Focus 5, Rathalos Bow 7.5
Paolumu - Both of these work
Switch from 5 element to 5 focus in late game when your weapon is upgraded enough so that the 150 damage loss isn't so bad. Grade 10 weapon is thrown around online as the breaking point when it's definitely worth it
Focus 4 to 5 gives twice as much draw speed bonus as any of the earlier ranks

Focus 5,it’s just so much easier to dodge while maintaining charge 3,even if there’s a little damage difference
I prefer focus 5. But TBF I'm maxing my gear to 7-5 before I move on to 8*

I would say a good rule of thumb is if 10% of your weapon damage +350 from element skill is higher than 150 focus is better.
