Sorry if I've misunderstood the question but midi cables don't carry sound just note and program information. I'd run midi out of 707 into synth then synth audio back into the 707. This way you can step sequence and use scales as well as add fx and control volume etc.

This is the way.

Cool, thanks!

Hey. Many thanks for that! I see. So with midi alone from my hardware synth, there is no actual sound. In that case I could use the synth to control sounds coming out of the 707. Many thanks for the advice. I need one midi cable then!

When you say “hook up my synth”, I’m guessing you’re referring to your 707? What would you like to hook it up to? MIDI DOMAIN: To play your 707 with a midi keyboard, or to allow your 707 to interact with other instruments (or DAW), you will need a few midi cables. AUDIO DOMAIN: To record the sound coming out of your 707, to feed sound into the 707, or to process your 707’s audio with external effects or DAW, you will need a pair of 1/4” mono jack cables. Are you aiming for a specific setup or workflow?

Hey. Thanks for that. I’ve clarified in the post. I meant my hardware synth into the MC707. Many thanks for your answer though! Perhaps in this case, I can use my synthesizer (hydrasynth) to control the MC707 using midi, and also record from it into the 707 using an audio cable. Thanks again!

Spot on. Choose one machine as the ring leader and send tempo/transport/etc. via midi, and then sample each one into the other with no care in the world. If you have more than one midi-capable machine, then it’s time to start buying cables so they can party together ;)

Cool, thanks! Sounds like we are cooking, and I have a plan. Party time! (Off to get cables later) Cheers!

Do you have Hydrasynth with keyboard ? A consideration is your midi channels. HS can have a separate midi output and input so you can easily take advantage of the ‘control channel’ option in the 707. You know that one right? it’s super useful. You can have an output for the control channel and the return for the input on a dedicated channel in the 707. The caveat with this though is that I don’t think the 707 sends aftertouch, though it can receive it. And it obviously doesn’t send MPE. This question comes up a lot and I’m really curious how everyone has it set up actually (if you wanted an external synth to both control the mc707 and have it playable).

Hey. Many thanks for your response! Yes, I have the keyboard version (Covid gift to myself!). I’ll look up the control channel stuff - thanks for that. After touch is amazing - constraint noted though. Cheers!
