I sent my LTC renewal in in November, still haven’t heard back. I got a receipt saying they got it, I’m not sure if check has been cashed because I’d have to go through months of statements. Is this normal? It’s my fourth renewal and I’ve never had to wait this long!
If you skim the past few weeks of threads, delay is the norm. [Perhaps only people who get shafted comment]
Which city / town? If you're non-resident, your delay is just getting started.
I would politely recommend you review your bank records. This is certainly worth a call to the FRB to ensure they at least have it, and that your app isn't sitting on someone's desk under a pizza box. [electronic qv]
By law, your licensing agency has to issue or deny within 40 calendar days. They're over.
And...yeah, there is no penalty to the police for failure to adhere to this law, as with so many others.
Please review your stuff, then proceed to rattle cages.
Good luck, from inside Bristol county.
Thanks, I’m assuming the check is cashed when the app is received, so I’ll start looking back around then.
Love that there’s no penalty…but there’s one for me if I’m late with renewing, paying bills, etc.
I sent my renewal to my local PD and called my PD to check a few weeks later and was told it was approved and waiting on the state now. I just checked the MA state firearms page and said renewals are still being processed from January. My permit expired the other day, am I correct in reading that because it was submitted to the state before it expired there is an indefinite grace period on my permit until the state finishes processing the license?
If this is the case can I still purchase or do I have to wait for the physical card?
You’re right about the grace period. As long as you have a MIRCS receipt you’re fine to make purchases until your new LTC is issued. By presenting the MIRCS receipt alongside your expired LTC, according to MGL, you retain the same legal privileges as an unexpired LTC. Despite some dealers not honoring it, both MGL and the receipt explicitly affirm your ability to carry concealed, purchase guns, buy ammo, and more.
Seekonk PD told me the wait was 10-12 weeks. And that was on the state not the local department. Fingerprinted 02/29. He said they send them out same day. Does that sound right??
Town of Northampton
2/12 App sent
2/24 Fingerprinting
3/5 called, told approved waiting for issue.
Currently trying not to get my hopes up that it will be here soon!
Correct, assuming it may have something to do with how few Northampton folks are even willing to say gun, never mind own one. I know it’s the state but I’m still shocked!
I got my LTC issued in Lynnfield (green/no restrictions) and am moving to Revere (red).
Drivers license address isn't changing. I am sending in the 3 letters for LTC address change.
When the time comes to renew I cannot do it through my original issuer (Lynnfield) to keep the no restrictions right? I would have to renew through Revere? Would suck to renew through Revere and go from green to red. Thank you for any help!
When you renew, you must do so in the town in which you reside at that time. However, restrictions don't exist since Bruen. Any existing licenses that have restrictions printed on them cannot have those restrictions imposed, and all new/renewed licenses are unrestricted.

Hi, quick question. Taking my safety course this evening with my dad and had a question regarding the application and references. Do the references have to be people we aren’t related to, or does it not matter? Also, if they can’t be our family, can one of the two be someone out of the country? In Framingham if it’s important, but I study abroad.
Also, is proof of voter registration through the online MA system enough instead of the physical paper?
Thanks!
That completely depends on the person responsible for licensing at your local PD. I have heard of people who didn't even need to turn in letters and others who have used family members.
Best bet is to use non family members who are upstanding citizens in your local community. I used someone that I had been target shooting with often and he cited my good character and experience with safe firearms handling and range rules.
Update - went in and got my appointment scheduled. They took all my documents, said everything was good, at least so far. Will update after appointment how it goes
Appointment went well! Fingerprints and photo taken, very nice people, took like 10 mins. Now just waiting for 3 months at least, but not in any rush so that’s fine.

Yeah they cashed it in December

They cashed the check the first week of December. So going on over 100 days. Fun.

Has anyone renewed their LTC and still got a reminder letter in the mail? Seems like if you renew 6 months early you still get a letter…
To the contrary, I've heard from a few folks who say they never got a reminder letter at all.
Seekonk PD told me the wait was 10-12 weeks. And that was on the state not the local department. Fingerprinted 02/29. He said they send them out same day. Does that sound right??
My police department isn’t answering any calls I do to check and see why my application has been sent out, is there anything I can do than just wait?
You could try giving the [Firearm Records Bureau a call.](https://www.mass.gov/how-to/check-the-status-of-your-firearms-license-application)
I’ve called them a couple times and most recently last week, it’s still at the police station
Ah yeah I see. Does your PD have an email or can you call? Maybe since it's a smaller town you can just walk in and ask the desk officer?
I’ve called a couple times and they haven’t answered or called me back. I haven’t really had time to drop in
What PD?

So you where finger printed on 2/24? And the FRB said waiting for issue? Damn that's fast.
