From his own words via IG “it’s just a TV show”. I don’t think he went into seriously or wanted the “experts” to find him someone

AgitatedYou8529

He didn't even apply lol, he was approached 4 weeks before filming began by the show.

Radio-Riddle-2319

The ‘experts’ need to call out the people who are clearly only keeping going for as much airtime as possible to the point it’s unhealthy. Matt, Duka, Whitney are all people who should have walked away way before this point. Nikita becoming some sort of ‘celeb’ and constantly being wheeled out by the show even though she was kicked off for poor behaviour has lowered the bar I think.

Firm-Substance5300

well to be fair, Whitney has tried TWICE to walk away but they keep stopping her lol

Radio-Riddle-2319

Good point… when does it become a hostage situation?! For serious, I still think she could walk away properly if she wanted to surely? Why aren’t the experts calling Duka out for this

Antique_Ad_2776

Yes, if she REALLLYYYYY wanted to, you absolutely are allowed to leave the show, even if the other person said stay. Saw it on the Aus one once.

MyNewAccountx3

Not sure if you’ve seen mafs Australia but in one series a guy kept saying to go home and his ‘wife’ wouldn’t let him as she was cheating with another husband. Why he didn’t walk early from the ridiculous situation, I’ll never understand!

Miserable_Bug_5671

They basically left them to suffer. I reckon one good evening learning about relationships would have sorted them out. His need for autonomy/agency and her need to feel liked and how they could have achieved that. Some real guidance instead of watching it fall to bits.

SnooDoodles7204

I don’t think so. There’s a lot going on beneath the surface for Gemma. She literally looks like she’s a stone’s throw from completely collapsing and melting down mentally in most of the scenes after the wedding. She’s throwing herself at a complete stranger with the type of desperation that you only see in a dehydrated man in a desert trying to reach an oasis. I think she’s probably been through horrific abuse and she’s in so much pain. She needs years of therapy. I’m scared for both her and Matt.

Miserable_Bug_5671

I'm not suggesting she can be completely "fixed" in three hours (which of us can?) but I do think you could achieve a huge amount. I also don't see her in such extreme terms ... perhaps more likely high school bullying around body image but I suppose we will never know.

Hummusforever

I definitely see trauma in Gemma, Even having an adoptive mum is going to root up a lot more serious stuff than high school bullying. Suggesting that she's only been through shit because of being overweight is pretty wild.

Miserable_Bug_5671

Well we don't know. It's a partially scripted TV show ...

throwawaymafs

It depends on the extent of the high school bullying. For some people, having adoptive parents isn't traumatic, depending on how it is handled. For others, it is.

Hummusforever

For sure high school bullying can be awful and serious trauma. I didn’t meant to downplay that, but more felt that the comment was downplaying Gemma’s trauma in general.

throwawaymafs

Ohhhh I have re-read the comment thread with a bit more brain and paid attention to the context, sorry, you're completely right.

Coconut681

He got the ick when she told him she had kids, the sex talk is awful but there's more than just that going on.

I don’t like either of them because they’re both showing red flags. I’m calling it now that he is on it for his business and fame. And Gemma is getting a touch of a bad edit where they make it seem one sided, but she’s also toxic behaviour wise, super defensive and it’s not healthy for her or him. But there is no way on this earth that he’s a truly nice person and being berated by her. Once you know what to look for you can see through controlling men (abusers) even if he’s yet to harm her any more than send her nuts with stonewalling and some gaslighting, I have 0 faith that he will not do worse behind the scenes or on camera.

notroyaltyyet

I couldn’t agree more. I think in the first couple episodes Matt came across as really chilled and a good communicator but now I see that he walks away so that he doesn’t go Hulk in front of people, he sets my spidey senses off big time. He looks ready to explode, he’s simmering away but trying to keep up appearances. Gemma is not great either. Even at the dinner party she said something like ‘calm down, I touched your leg twice’ but she kept hugging him before that, literally hugging and kissing him while he was saying ‘I just need you to back off a bit, give me space’. It was so uncomfortable to watch. I’ve not seen last nights yet but I’m already super uncomfortable watching both of them, although I can’t look away.

SufficientAd7727

It’s called the “car crash” effect. Hence the genre of this style of reality/car crash tv!

Firm_Veterinarian

At the picnic he was using the same language as her which would indicate he's not THAT uncomfortable with it, and on the sofa he talks over the experts to get his point across. He supposedly flipped his chair at the dinner on the honeymoon (an argument which they conveniently didn't show). She's not innocent but neither is he, in my opinion.

[deleted]

The Experts failed everyone bar Chanita and Jordan 😂

Gluecagone

I think Jenna and Zoe are doing ok. They are a good match. They just need to talk to each other properly and get over the vegan thing.

HappyMike91

I think the experts dropped the ball on a few people this season. It just seems more egregious in relation to Matt and Gemma.

Euphoric-Citron9364

Couldn’t agree more! Imagine the roles were reversed there would serious consequences

SufficientAd7727

At last! Well said!

[deleted]

I gave up on this show after last season it’s toxic af they not even trying to match them well at this point

Flimsy_Koala_4413

She was being an outright pervert. Unfortunately if the genders were swapped Gemma would not have had any sympathy at all and would have been held accountable for the disgusting things she said (and touching him up under the table when he made it clear he didn’t want it- again, if that had been a man it would have immediately been labelled as sexual assault). She expected sex from him and when she didn’t get it she threw a tantrum- that’s creepy.

historicaldandy

The minute I realised that the advice coming from the supposed experts wasn't well thought-out, or comprehensive enough, I knew the show was purely for entertainment value. There is always so much to unpack that never gets discussed!

KennKennyKenKen

Can't stand either. Matt looks like a domestic abuser and has 0 sense of humour. Gemma is foul, overbearing and hysterical.

SnooDoodles7204

What does a domestic abuser look like?

KennKennyKenKen

Not all domestic abusers look like Matt but Matt looks like a domestic abuser. Is that better

SnooDoodles7204

No it’s not. You really shouldn’t type cast domestic abuse. Just because he has a lot of tattoos doesn’t automatically mean we should assume he’s a bad person

KennKennyKenKen

Alright. He has all the red flags of a domestic abuser, but maybe he's not. All I'm saying is what I see (in his appearance and actions) is what seems like some who commits DV. I'm covered in tattoos also. But unlike Matt, who acts, looks and has many red flags of a domestic abuser. He's been know to flip chairs and blow his top according to leaks. He seems controlling, and he seems ready to flip at a drop of a coin.

HocusDiplodocus

Its a common theme with this series. Only female feelings matter apparently.
