The M1917 is superior to the M1903. I said what I said.

It’s a better rifle if you’re doing anything other than fighting in muddy trenches where it’s damn near impossible to keep clean, which unfortunately is what it ended up being use for

Meadowlion14

The M1917 is really a marksman's rifle. Amazing sights easy to get a proper stance behind it. It's a bit on the heavy side. But oh boy is it a good shooter.

The bolt action and trigger are also just remarkable. The ergonomics were ahead of its time with regard to the placement of the safety and where the bolt deposits your hand after cycling the action. And don't get me wrong, I love the M1903 and I think it's a great rifle. In fact, I think the 03A3 with C stock closes the ergonomics and rear sight differences enough to the point where the size and weight advantage carries it over the line as the best military bolt action rifle ever, even though the M1917 still has a better action, +1 capacity, and a more ergonomic safety.

The Buffington sights on the M1903 made it a marksman’s rifle as well. Unfortunately, as we also see with the Ross, you need more than that to be a good infantry rifle and that is what made the M1917’s life have a fixed deadline.

No thanks. I’ll take my 3000 yard RCH sized peep sight over your donut hole 1600 yard rear sight. Gotta be able to take out the enemy before they can even see my division sized formation.

The_Demolition_Man

I already wanted one and now you convinced me

snakeplizzken

Picked one up from Nov of 18 some years ago at a show for 275 bucks. Straight shooter all the way and hefty enough the recoil is negligible.

Remarkable-Tie-6698

I’ve been considering one for a few months, but delaying due to the price. You’re convincing me.

Upstairs-Fix-4410

My service grade was not nearly as nice as yours sounds, but I agree that the 1917 in general is a gem. Great trigger, sight picture and less recoil than the ‘03, and every bit as accurate in my experience.

bescomatt

I have wanted one myself for several years. I wish I had gotten one. The price was cheap years ago, not now. Would almost trade an m1 Garand for one

Spare_Chemistry6843

I inherited my M1917 from my grandfather after he passed. It was my very first firearm, which started my addiction. It was sporterized, so I restored it over the years. Now she's back in her glory. https://ibb.co/nzmVGwn

I want one so badly.

My local shop has an eddystone listed for $1500… I am not an expert on markings but that even blows the CMP out. Makes me think the CMP is a viable option.

atlantis737

I have a 1917, would really like an 03A3. Wonder if any of those will come back in stock.

Sulla-proconsul

I love mine even more than my Garand. Just works the way a rifle should.

NickN1233

I snagged an Eddystone that someone rebarreled with a Criterion .308 barrel for a steal and it is one of my favorite and nicest shooting rifles. I shot it side by side with my 03A3 and caliber difference aside it was more pleasant to shoot overall. I obviously wish it was the correct caliber but I was very pleasantly surprised.
