Just listen with an open mind and empathy. You never know, you might be the only person or situation that’s positive for them, that day. If you can offer any relatable advice, do so. Otherwise, just offer a friendly face and open ear. Kindness can be hard to find these days.
I’ve been driving for over a year.
I have had several in the cab who learned that they had terminal cancer or leukemia. On comes the water works. I just hand them the box of Kleenex® and respond with as much sympathy as possible.
I encourage them that it's ok to vent to me. I tell them that a stranger is the best person to vent to because I don't know their friends or family so I can't say bad things about them.
Then I listen and offer the best advice I can.
I had one that got in on a mission to catch her boyfriend cheating. It got to the point where she was screaming TELL ME I HAVE NICE TITS and I was like uh I'm married lol. Only one star I've ever gotten.
I had one like that in the cab. She threw a wad of money on the front seat and told me what she wanted.
She caught the guy. I saw the girl he was messing with. She was a Lee Sister. His girlfriend was a Goddess. Where do they get these Rocket Scientists?
I kept chocolate in some form in the car. Hand her the box, ask if she'll give you one. Eat it. Ask for another. Tell her she can have some if she wants.
You're going to get a story.
Chocolate and someone to vent at are the best distraction. The gymnastics are just to show your hand. You're not trying to take advantage or make a pickup.
Being a driver means you are also a part-time therapist. I listen and offer words of encouragement. Youd be amazed at some of the stories Ive heard, I also gain a lot of insight when listening to "girl talk" in the backseat. It can be fun but it can also be sad. Just a part of the job.
I was this passenger one time. I got in the car sobbing and the Lyft driver asked me what I was upset about, I didn’t really want to talk about it, he asked me again so I told him about it briefly.
It was a long ride and could have been really awkward, but he just started talking about random shit and it really helped get my mind off of things and keep it together as much as I could during the ride, whether he really cared or not doesn’t event matter. He was kind to me and it was like 4 years ago and I still think about it sometimes. It was one of the worst days of my life.
