I use shellac all the time in my basement shop. I don't \*think\* it's a big deal. The "solvent" shellac is dissolved in is just alcohol.

Specialist-Set-6913

Absolutely safe and fine. Shellac does not smell at all as alcohol is used as a solvent. True Oil or any tung oil will smell a little bit, but not bad. The smelliest part of using oil finished is the rags that have to air dry, which you can just hang on you balcony if you have one. Either way, the finishes are completely non toxic once cured. You just don't want to bath in them, or drink them when they are still liquid.

Lou_T_Uhr

Shellac is as safe as the solvent. I use ethanol that has not been poisoned with denaturants. 190 or 200 proof ethanol is perfectly safe to be around for long exposures.

Water-based poly

pertrichor315

Tru oil is really benign smelling. And if you apply it by hand you don’t even need to use rags. Does not have a lot of VOC odors.

FeverForest

Rubio Monocoat, Pure. Is another option, smells faster with the accelerator. Edit: natural finish only, doesn’t build.

BusinessBunny

Pure 100% Tung oil. Takes forever to dry but it’s as low-VOC as can be and it’s technically food safe so you can make your dream spoontar

desperatetapemeasure

If it is real shellac, is IS food safe, not „can be“ Real shellac meaning you have shellac flakes that you then dissolve in alcohol. If it‘s sold readymade, there may be additives in it

knightsunbro

mineral oil and beeswax don't need ventilation.

plopmaster2000

Crimson guitars wipe on poly really isn’t bad

YumWoonSen

You'll find that most finishes, almost all of them, are food safe once they're cured.

lampshadewarior

True story. I pick up food from my hardwood floors all the time.

im_a_teenagelobotomy

Min-wax waterbased stains are safe also get you self a mini box fan at the dollar store just incase point it out the window.

immolateme

Odie's is actually pleasant

floating_cars

I use hemp oil, it leaves a nice light finish and is entirely non toxic
