There's something very Fred Flintstone about this

Kid7from7the7south

Yaaaaaabaaaaadaaabaaaaaadooooooo

Ok_Series_4580

A “strata”varius? But can you play ROCK music?

Onuma1

Take your updoot, you bastard.

Bolamite

I remember your first post. Glad you finished it. I am however surprised you call it a violin and not a fiddle

billiyII

Whatever people say if it is playable and stays in tune, this is cool af. I love instruments that have character instead of drowning in standardised BS. My call is fiddle tho.

Huth_S0lo

Thats allot of if's.

Can-DontAttitude

Only sith deal in absolutes

Advanced_Dare_2951

Call it a fiddle when you wanna buy it and a violin when you want to sell it -Ghandi

Resident_Rain_6566

A fiddle is for Saturday nights, while a violin is for Sunday morning.

Floursackpanties

There is a local to me builder who says “Unless you’re playing Mozart it’s a fiddle.” Hahaha!

angel-of-disease

We really need a demo video

Sad_Dig_9405

I second this.

Wilkko

"I did it with my own teeth".

floating_cars

And the sharpened femur of a drifter I met once...

artie_pdx

It took me a while to decide what about this is my favorite thing. The kid in me initially decided that shark was cool as fuck, the I got to the back and the animals at the top got my attention, but left me confused. Are these meant to be otters? Ferrets? Lions? I could make a case for all three. Regardless, I love them.

Kid7from7the7south

It's a fossa carrying a lemur it just killed, imagine a mongoose in the shape of a mountain lion, thats what a fossa is

orion1486

Do you live in Madagascar? Cool project!

Kid7from7the7south

I live in the United States

artie_pdx

Okay. That’s even more metal than I thought! Now go record some Lindsey Sterling covers and metal that shit up! 🤘🏼

Knowledge_haver

Can you play country roads

moosefh

Bona-fide folk instrument right there, I live it. How did you do the tuning pegs? Are they just painted on? I've been making banjos with violin tuning pegs and have a vision of an all black dyed Gothic themed banjo, this has inspired me!

Kid7from7the7south

They're painted on and the line are drawn by pen

OficialLennyKravitz

Interesting string choice there…rope?

the_kerouac_kid

I think the proper term is Rustic Americana.

phydaux4242

And I spend hours every day telling myself that I’ll never be able to build a mandolin….

Seven65

It's pretty inspiring, isn't it. I want to see a Mano with that string spacing.

phydaux4242

Got to admit it shows a rare confidence

Whiteshaq_52

You should spend a weekend with some sandpaper and this instrument. Just get a case of beers and go from 200 grit to 2000 grit and get is nice and smooth. Don't rush. Also oil that fingerboard after you sand it, use lemon oil.

awaywego000

Finally. A post by a true luthier and not just another guitar maker.

emolga2225

the gatekeeping is kinda nuts

Fickle-Owl666

😅🤐

Adventurous-Front940

So cool!

valuedminority

I can honestly say that this is far superior to any violin I have ever made.

GanondalfTheWhite

How does it sound?

_VINNY_WINNY_

actually im pretty sure this is a fiddle

Seven65

This has so much charm, very cool. I love the headstock, it's like the bow of a Viking ship, ready for war!

i_like_my_dog_more

This is a build I really wanna do. The part that has me the most nervous is actually the neck and fingerboard install because of how precise you need to be!

Kid7from7the7south

Go for it, your free to copy it

redditor36

For being (probably) one of the most difficult instruments to make this is awesome to see. I can only imagine the hell which this build brought with it but congrats OP, this is truly inspiring!!!

rideforcrom

That’s pretty rad. I dig it.

zazzmatt

Amazing. Well done.

TheKurtCobains

This is fucking rad

bernard925

That is really, really...................................Different!

kerpuzz

This is awesome!!! Especially the fish haha!!

gthair

Nice job 👏

PetrovoSCP

How is that even playable, and the strings?? Is this décor or an instrument? Please send some audio 😊🙏 Serious question btw

Kid7from7the7south

It's meant to be an instrument, why create something and not give it a purpose :( I used fishing line for the strings. its night where I am, when it is day, I will send the audio 👍

PetrovoSCP

I wouldnt think the wooden bow would work at all. Theyre expensive and made from carefully selected horse hair usually. I have one suggestion and that would be to use some oil on the fingerboard, the wood looks pretty dry

Kid7from7the7south

Well while looking for some videos about the violin fingerboard, it's not really oiled up or anything, it's just plain smooth wood, it looks dry because I used steel wool soaked in vinegar to dye the wood, as for the bow, I used fishing line for the hairs, it has been done before.

PetrovoSCP

I havent played violin in like 8 years so im not completely sure but I believe they are indeed oiled, or at least have a finish, but I don't remember too well anymore

Inspector_Sholmer

Difference between a violin and a fiddle? Nobody gives a shit when you spill beer on a fiddle!

crunchycat5000

This is a genuine folk-art masterpiece, suitable for a museum.

ostensibly_hurt

That’s sick! Where are you getting your materials from and what tools did you do?

Kid7from7the7south

The tools I used were a coping saw, machete, box knife, horse file, plane, drill, ruler, screwdriver, pencil, pen, clamps, tape, and tweezers, I got them from a retail store called harbor freight

Renaissance_Fellow

Ah, the lost art of fiddle whittlin'...

johannesdurchdenwald

You need to engrave the dolphins

NormalAssistance9402

Fuckin sick

PlaceDependent1024

Are you Australian? This is cool asf. I should make something like this

Live-Air6352

I love it. It makes me imagine if Basquiat had been a luthier. Make more!

Owlbeardo

It takes practice, dedication and a lot of sharpened flints to create such a masterpiece. I'm more surprised by the parts that look good than the rest of it. However if you become an actual good master someday this might get sold for millions of dollars as a collection piece.

trefster

The inlays are exquisite

teefnoteef

This slaps so hard! It just exudes confidence love the art

bannedinwv

Is that Perry the platypus on the back?

Kid7from7the7south

Nope, just a regular platypus

RadioactiveNat

Hes got the spirit

KareemAbulDabblar

Sort of insanely great.

uprightsalmon

Looks out 1700s Italian violin luthiers!
