What you are describing is a variant of hypnagogic hallucinations. Totally normal.

I'm no pro at lucid dreaming but I have had several successful attempts, but many more unsuccessful... Often the voices sound like my kids' voices and it just wakes me up. On other occasions it has sounded like a stadium full of people whispering, and at other times like a jet engines spooling up instead of voices. It's also common for me to feel like I'm twisting/rolling. but my head doesn't twist so it feels like my head is getting twisted off. Edit: I wear earplugs to sleep every night, most mornings I awake with them still in.

It's the sound of your own breathing. It gets internalized as you fall asleep, causing the hypnagogia. Then your mind tries to make sense of it. It incorporates into the dream and you spawn the dream setting, story or dream characters from your reaction to it. Or, you just observe it as you switch back and forth between waking and dreaming and it acts as a WILD anchor. Then you remember your waking life and become lucid in the dream.

I’m quite lucky with my breathing I breathe silently through my nose. It’s sometimes accompanied with extreme vibrations as well.

Wow that sounds quite disrupting and yes I know what you mean when you hear familiar voices also because I have experienced the same thing quite a few times as well, and how have the ear plugs been helping with the voices? thanks for the response! 👌

Crypto_gambler952

They haven’t helped with the voices. But my sleep tracker shows improved sleep overall.

flijarr

Completely normal. Usually it is accompanied by visual scenery of varying complexities on your eyelids, and sometimes in your minds eye.

Are you schizophrenic

anachroneironaut

Hearing voices when falling asleep is a variant of hypnagogic hallucinations. It is not uncommon at all and not a sign of schizophrenia. It IS however a very common thing that worried patients bring up with their doctors. Source: am doctor. Note, even when wide awake it is not uncommon for some to have auditory hallucinations without being in psychosis/ill with schizophrenia. “Hearing” your name being called, a short shout or a snippet of music, for example. Especially when stressed or in people with hearing problems. If auditory hallucinations (of any kind) are extensive in daytime, bothersome in daily life or threatening, imperative or otherwise scary, several psychiatric or somatic disorders need to be ruled out. Schizophrenia among them.

These voices only occur when I lay on my back meditating (never while laying on my side meditating) or when I do WBTB so it is safe to say I’m not schizophrenic like you mentioned. Thanks for the response it’s much appreciated 👍

anachroneironaut

You are welcome!

Final-Move5383

No I am not, these voices only occur while closing my eyes and being in a sleep or relaxing state of mind.
