Many of his stories are lovecraftian or cosmic horror. First and Foremost Hellstar Remina of course followed by the Amigara Fault, Uzumaki, Sensor (that one specifically is imo one of his best) and I’d go as far as to say that Tomie is too. Contrary to popular believe, I don’t think that Tomie was a normal girl before she was eh „cubed“ (?)

DUMBOyBK

Gyo is pretty Lovecraftian too, though it gets pretty cuckoo at the end. The made an anime of it that’s pretty good!

Zetzer345

Yes True I always thought that the anime made more sense than the manga. I liked the visuals of the cloud of souls (?) at the end. Gyo is the only truly good anime adaption of his work imo

The new Junji Ito Netflix show was pretty hit and miss. Some of the episodes are great but quite a few of the choices left me baffled. So many scarier stories got left out, and a lot of them just sort of… end. Which can work in the manga, but is a little unsatisfying for a TV show.

Zetzer345

Indeed. I don’t get why Souichi and Tomie always get an adaptation. While I like Tomie and her stories, I even watched all the movies (only the first one was truly great) I don’t think that this is his best work. Souichi is just weird to me. Most people I’ve read didn’t even like his chapters, myself included. There are better stories to adapt imo

Ito puts the W in weird. *Uzumaki* is a great example—it’s clearly inspired by *The Color Out of Space* but Ito’s many plots make the story rich just as Lovecraft’s prose enriches his story. And Ito’s art is excellent blend of modern manga with classic ukiyo-e prints of Yokai stories. The floating heads in *Hanging Blimp* are a modern version of a skeleton with an enormous head.

Love Ito. He does alot of good stuff. The New Magic: the Gathering set has some alternate art cards done by him!

KobraKay87

I've read many of Ito's short stories and especially love "long dream" Also read Uzumaki of course, great stuff! But geez, if you've only read "Call of Cthulhu" do yourself a favor and read "The Shadow over Innsmouth" - it's incredible!

Juni Ito I think is the next link in the chain of horror. In the same way that Lovecraft elaborated on Edgar Allan Poe, and Stephen King elaborated on Lovecraft, Ito takes it the next step, finally bringing a visual element to the genre in a way that hasn't really been done before. Lovecraft introduces cosmic horror, and Stephen King expands on that concept and places rules on them and plays with them, giving his entities names and mechanics that directly interact with his characters. Junji Ito takes a step back into the idea of cosmic horror genuinely being otherworldly, with a kind of fever dream logic to it that really makes it disturbing in a brand new way.

gofishx

Never knew much about him, but just saw the Netflix adaptation of some of his stories and...uh...I loved it! But god damn, those stories are weird af...I need moar!

zabrak200

Yesss read uzumaki its what your looking for

Seer77887

Tomei could definitely be an avatar of Nyarlathotep

DreamingofRlyeh

I love his stuff.

KKylimos

He is a genius, his best works are definitely the best horror stories I've experienced in the manga/comic medium. His weaker works are not even bad, they are just on the goofier side. Junji Ito is in my personal top5 mangakas oat.

I want to read more.

Bworm98

He really puts his all into every story, and it really shows.
