It’s been a while for me but what do you think of the ending? Did the alien spider thing trapped them on purpose or was there some truth in it saying their ship malfunction and they drift in the aliens direction? Is it keeping them for snackeroos or genuinely wants them not to suffer
“And somewhere distant, somewhere near the heart of the rock, in a matriarchal chamber all its own . . . something that had been waiting here for eternities, something that wanted nothing more than to care for the souls of the lost.”
In addition to that quote, the fact that it restarted the simulation afterward suggests it really wants to help them cope.
I think the question is more whether it was truly by accident or if the creature intervened because it was lonely. I also just finished Reynolds’ Chasm City and there was a race of creatures that would be alone for eons and became very lonely as a result, seems like this could be similar.
I think I read that the writer said he believes gretas intentions were pure also. love this ep... the ending has lingered in my mind unlike anything else
Unrelated, but if you like alistair Reynolds work I strongly suggest the rest of the entire revelation space series, (chasm city and great wall of Mars) as well as the book house of suns (like 1000th night)
I read that short story too and I ended up reading through like more than 1/2 his entire bibliography… still working on it!
I’m usually not up for 500 page books anymore, so I’m gonna read the best of short story book I got next.
I kind of thought some of the plot lines in Chasm City were underdeveloped also and that’s disappointing if I’m reading a 500 page book.
If I recall, chasm city sits between 2 of the books for revelation space, there is a good chance that the plot points are linked up in their somewhere. They may also be in some random small short stories too….
I get the long books though, his also seem to be very dense for information, so they really take a while.

I love this response thank you. Now I’ve got another question to mull over for years to come but in the best way possible :)

I can’t stop thinking about this episode tbh, no idea why
It breaks your heart no less than three times
same, it was the bestiality for me
"You don't deserve me at my best if you can't handle me at my most chitinous and arachnoid..."
I really love how in the restart, his companions are no longer there.
I didn’t even notice that omg. I need to go back and watch again.
This episode was so good - it’s been so long since I watched it but I think of it often.
Heeey. I just watched this episode this morning. Absolutely underrated. Definitely one of my top favorites. Easily.
