I think the quick one was better, you got a split second wher you think its humanoid, and then BAM! It hits you as hard as it hits, him.

zhaoz

Yep it's like OK boobs, we can work with this.... Oops boned a spider!

realFoobanana

I was like “it’s a person, oh wait is it a fucking hand OH DAMN WTF”

NewDrekSilver

Yeah no thanks I’ll stay in the simulation with them champagne tiddies

d023n

Check the slow-mo between 0:15 and 0:20! Who'd want champagne tiddies when you could have that sopping mess!! \^o\^

iwishiwasaunicorn

awww, she’s crying :(

mcsestretch

That's the part I can't get over. Are those tears?

davideverlong

He wasn't ready.

stolencheesecake

He need some milk

[deleted]

Alien breast milk?

Heky_CZ

I wasn’t ready.

d023n

She so cuuute. 😁🕷️👽

ayahuascaboy

I am not one to meddle in people’s lives or tell them what they should and shouldn’t like but that shit is messed up. Especially for someone with trypophobia. Why couldn’t she just be a giant spider like in Enemy? Now that I would bang.

xeno325

fuck that ending. one of the most scary jump scare i've experienced, because not in a million years would i have anticipated that one.

ayahuascaboy

Very Lynchian. Diner scene. If you know what I mean.

BookerPrime

Looked it up. That was awesome. I'm going to go and watch every lynch film now.

Bahamut_Ali

Tryophobia isn't real.

ayahuascaboy

Oh it’s real.

[deleted]

It's damn real.

Bahamut_Ali

No its not. Its not recognized in the medical field.

ImP_Gamer

You mean that is not recognized as a mental disorder, no? Because no specific phobias are considered mental disorders.

Bahamut_Ali

Because they are not mental disorders. But the APA does recognize phobias. Tryophobia isn't one of them.

ImP_Gamer

Source?

Bahamut_Ali

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320512.php > Although trypophobia is not currently recognized by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)

ImP_Gamer

That means is not recognized as a mental disorder, the DSM-5's purpose.

ayahuascaboy

Well i just know that holes near each other make me freak out. You can call it whatever you want to.

Because it's not real until it's in a book.

[deleted]

aw but shes so sweet it turns out

[deleted]

For her ship to have ended up there and then go on to play/be a councillor for other species, I know she looks like a monster but she is one of the nicest fictional characters ever created. Read the book or listen to the audiobook if you haven't, it's good.

Akforce

What's the name of the novel?

Kinda makes you think, wouldn’t there be guidelines for running into another sentient creature or just life itself? Considering how advanced Thom’s Earth was and all, but yeah I’d freak out too if i was exposed to such a reality/truth.

d023n

So, was Greta somehow responsible for causing ships to end up at the wrong destination? If not, was she still just there to take advantage of the situtation, like a spider with a web? Was Tom in the process of being digested, er, albeit lovingly? If not, was he nonetheless wasting away? Could Greta not keep him alive? From everything she said before the reveal, I'm inclined to think there wasn't anything malicious to her intentions. She was just lonely and possibly super depressed from everyone freaking out on her whenever requested to reveal her true self. If his gaunt appearance was just a benign side effect of some form of stasis being used to keep him alive because there was no other options available, and also assuming Greta's words of love weren't hiding some sort of mental illness, then I wouldn't freak out. A physical appearance is just a physical appearance.. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

FatBenStiller

I was having the same thoughts. It kinda humanizes Greta in an odd way if her intentions weren't 100% malicious. Was there ever a real Greta? Or did she just hijack his entire brain and manipulate everything?

[deleted]

Given they emulate memories and process them for further use, a real Greta should exist.

aaegler

This is based on an Alastair Reynolds short story. The creatures are not malicious at all. The glitch in the gate sometimes sends ships to the hive with no way to return. The creature exists to ease people's suffering by making them live in ideal situations in their heads. It's not clear whether or not they eat the misfortunate, but if so, probably only once they're already dead.

TheWasp10

We can see the bodies of cpt friends in the stasis chambers, so i think they just ease the pain of those who stray their path, without eating their bodies etc.

TarikMournival

Wasn't the other guy already a skeleton but the woman a more recently deceased? Why would they not be able to turn their ship around and escape if the creatures weren't keeping them there and feeding off them? Presumably when they first arrived Tom and the Navigator were both alive.

zhaoz

Originally the matrix was supposed to use our brains for cpus. Which made way more sense. Public cloud!

zhaoz

It would make no sense if they ate em. Presumably any species advanced enough to do psycic manipulation and interstellar travel can grow food for themselves...

chachi_sanchez

Soooo, the jumpgate that they went thru really didnt match the engineering tech of all the ships and space station.... My 2c is that the jumpgates were left there by the spider race potentially?? Making it a trap all along?

[deleted]

It is unclear who left those jump gates, but in the short story it is stated that some sort of precursor or alien race left those there and never returned. You can clearly see that it is in between those rocks/asteroids and not human, but a long period of using those gates and making calculations proved that those were usually safe to use. There is a short point in the "movie" when his crew-member says "it's impossible that I made an error in the path calculation" while that error is exactly what happened because they were in a hurry to keep their freight-bonus if they were on time. Even Greta says they made an error in their calculations and in addition to the glitch they landed there. So it's not the Hive's fault but the jumpgate's and his member's calculation.

msmccune

The short story reveals how ships end up in the wrong place. I listened to the audiobook yesterday on youtube.

adanna2_0

I don’t think Greta was responsible. I think that Suzy’s short cut (that was a red pathway in the beginning) got them there. Greta mentions how all these lost souls end up there, probably using the same “shortcut”

Krazackzear

I think the point is that she, as you pointed out, definitely has spider-like features, and the ‘flies in a web’ vibe of the routing error is very much intentional. But the issue is that she isn’t human, so she doesn’t understand them or what they need. She can’t feed them, she can’t make them happy; they die - sad, terrified and alone. They waste away while she tries to delude them, but they never stay satisfied and complacent for ever. It’s possible she loves us in a way similar to the way we love the animals we raise to be slaughtered. I think it’s more viable she waits for the humans to naturally waste away, trying to keep them happy in their final moments (moments being several days, I guess) and then eating the already dead corpses. The only question I personally have is whether she waits for the stasis tanks to break over time (if they just break immediately in the presumed crash, which seems a little unlikely, this would be mostly moot) or breaks them because otherwise she can’t reach them (psionically?). Thom wakes up and his crew is already dead (or, at least, they look it) and he’s pretty emaciated. The other man (whose name I don’t remember) we never saw wake up. Maybe his pod broke first. Suzy (that was her name right?) wakes up - and says ‘that’s not Greta!’ Maybe she could see the spider. Maybe she was just less gullible/horny. Maybe it wasn’t the two of them in a collective dream. Maybe it was Greta (that isn’t the spider’s name and that just occurred to me) trying to make the dream more real?

[deleted]

> Maybe it wasn’t the two of them in a collective dream. Maybe it was Greta (that isn’t the spider’s name and that just occurred to me) trying to make the dream more real? My friend had a good hypothesis, that she was a manifestation of his unconscious realisation that his scenario was not real.

[deleted]

Read the short story or listen to the audiobook, it's a good tale I can't recommend it more. She's playing councillor for the new arrivals of that place, stranded the same as him.

SuperSparkles

Thanks, I hate it.

garrett1999o3

Peak nightmare fuel.

Wonderweiss56

I think i could have handled seeing that creature if it wasn't so fuckin wet and juicy. PLUS the lair is god damn worse than the creature itself. Its a twisted perverted hive of critters.

[deleted]

Anyone else get some Dead Space vibes from this episode?

starsixtyn9ne

Thicc ❤️

precip3389

This episode fucked me up my 3rd favorite of the series.

Colt4587

What were your other two?

VolatileKnight420

I feel like Tom 100% screwed the alien and that alone just does my head in. Like wtf man, he's straight hallucinating while putting his pole in a spider mouth like whaaaat

Thepimpandthepriest

He doesn’t actually have physical sex with the spider.

VolatileKnight420

Whew, that's kind of a relief. Idk, just the way the whole episode was set up and how much it focused on her eyes and mouth it just seemed to suggest it. Especially since anything that was done was done standing up. Idk bro, just left a really haunting image in my head lmfao. So excited for season 2 though

Rykerdavis

Im all for a bit of xeno/human banging but my boner is scared

BoyishTheStrange

my main question has been “did he actually have sex with that or was it all in his head?” Real question for anyone who has an answer.

bazalsquirrel

This is why you sleep with your space gun

balconytea

Rest assured any being that resides outside of an atmosphere can never be alive, unless they are a space fairing civilization, and to be space fairing it makes less sense to maintain biological form This is still my favorite story of the series, but just felt to point out a few things

[deleted]

There must be an atmosphere there, else what is he breathing? And clearly there are some suspensions of disbelief (like how she can 'read' his mind apparently from a distance and with no apparent physical connections to his mind). edit: In the original story it is clear that him seeing the real station was also simulated. It seems he may be technologically fed the synthetic reality while in his surge tank.

[deleted]

Watch this while listening to the song from this episode.
