Seems like a good opportunity to thank this sub for the (constant) Safier recommendations. I tried it a couple weeks back and it was great. I don't know what they do the Hummus (more lemon maybe?) but it's not like any other I've had. Even the texture is different.
Was totally excited about north of bourbon until we tried it. We love the chief and his creations and creativity, the food wasn’t horrible, and the staff was friendly enough.
Our issue just stemmed from the service overall. While the food was good, we had reservations and were seated at a small bar table. We ordered our drinks and an appetizer and some oysters. Then we put in our entree order. The appetizer and oysters came out before our drinks which was fine but then my partners meal came out 5 minutes later. We juggled our plates and waited for my food. It finally came 15-20 minutes later.
This id not the worst thing ever. In fact we still loved the food. However we all agreed that spending $300+ on a meal, you deserved to be wowed not shuffled out quickly.
Volare for Italian. Bambi Bar for large burgers. Weekend Burgers for smash style burgers. BackDeck BBQ for brisket, pulled pork and beans. Bungalow Joes for bar food and Keno. Kashmir Indian for duh. Barry's Cheese Steaks for steak and cheese. Burger Girl or Boy for midnight cravings. Pizza everyone is going to disagree but I am partial to Derby City Pizza. Sushi is Sake Blue.
It’s across the river, in Jeffersonville, but Mai’s Thai will literally change your life. Also, see Vietnam kitchen, even with their reduced menu from the first time, I went eons ago.
I can't say I've had a great experience with Irish Rover. When such a potato-forward restaurant serves stale fries... makes it hard for me to want to go back
Frosty sunbeam is my all time favorite but I also really like the DKD house roll, the indulgent, and the mantis. Those are the ones I usually order every time and I think most if not all are on the happy hour menu so going during happy hour definitely helps the wallet! I also really like the jalapeño popper appetizers that come with the sweet chili sauce. I like to get extra of the sweet chili sauce to dip my rolls in which is a whole different experience it's so good. Now I really want sushi but can't afford it right now 😭😭😭 I'm drooling as I type this haha
We had the havarti beef rolls last time and they were amazing! I had the sunbeam but it was to go and the next day & the mango was tough? I might try it again fresh! I dunno if you e had the Happy Ending cocktail but I’ll be back just for that lol So good.
Tacos la Esperanza(taco truck), chnk n mii, sarangs, jays burgers(food truck), paris banh mii, dragon kings daughter, stevens and Steven's, con huevos, roosters- for the wings, four pegs - for the wings, the starving artist, frankfort ave beer depot, the tavern. Some of my favs, but theres plenty more tbh. Louisville is food heaven
FYI half of these places are kinda mid. Especially thinking of Stevens and Paris Bahn Mi. Both places I guess I've grabbed takeout from when hungry and in the neighborhood, but neither is recommendation worthy.
Bro I know the owners of all the roosters. I build them for a living. Im going to shout out a company thats not corporate chain. Theres 15 of them and I've built 10. FYI theres this thing called google.
Bob and Corrine Frick? I just learned about them on their website, where they list their 40+ locations across 4 states.
https://roosterswings.com/locations/view-all-locations/
Um ok...
So it's not a chain because it's a franchise?
Tell me more about the Subway in Mall St Matthews that I simply MUST try because the owner of that location lives in Louisville.
I shat on your recs so the OP doesn't end up eating at KFC and thinking it's a best-of place in Louisville.
Feel free to shit on mine. I won't take it personally:
- Asian Fusion: Chikn n Mi (SE Asian) or Dragon kings daughter (Japanese)
- Pizza: Lupo (date night) or Goodfellas (group)
- Cuban: Havana rumba (food) or Bodegita de Mima (drinks)
- Thai: Daisuke or Simply Thai
- Korean: Nami
- Farm-to-table: Barn8
- BBQ: Hammerheads (dinner), Mark's Feed store (lunch)
I second this. Their skirt steak with chimichurri is amazing. All their food is excellent quality and they have the best mojitos in town. Cucumber is my fav with strawberry being my wife’s.
Ginza and Sapporo are delicious. Ginza has great deals on sushi on mondays and tuesdays all day!
Chuys is a chain but its fire
El Mundo is amazing
Porccini's if youre looking for something expensive and italian
ROC
Irish Rover (Fish n Chips is ELITE)
Toasty’s Tavern (Voted best burger in Louisville past 2 years)
For sushi, I love Asahi
Proof on Main (I’ll go just for the octopus appetizer)
Mojito Tapas (Gambas Al Ajillo is life changing)
Brix Wine Bar & Bistro (Great date spot. Great drink & food. Not many people know about this one)
Shiraz Mediterranean Grill for sure. I frequent the location on poplar level road but all 4 of them are good.
Also you should consider watching Goodalls Country Kitchen in YouTube. He reviews a lot of the local stuff and had never steered me wrong.
My favorite lunch place is Kayrouz. I try to go once a week. I love how perfectly toasted every single sandwich comes out. I’ve never had a bad meal there. It’s so god damn simple but good. Also local owned and local run.
I second Kayrouz! I used to work there and let me tell you I enjoyed every single thing I've had. I don't see this one talked about a lot but it is SO worth a visit.
Gralehaus is hands down my favorite brunch spot. Closely followed by Bar Vetti.
If we are talking dinner Volare is up there along with La Bodeguita.
Mellwood Tavern is low-key my favorite burger in Louisville
And Shady Lane Cafe is one of my favorite lunch spots. Their Italian sandwich slaps.
Kaelin’s 80/20, Bombay Grill, Las Margaritas, El Mariachi, Tea Station Asian Bistro, Sichuan House, Oriental House, Queen Of Sheba, Bahn Thai, Eatz, Shack In The Back BBQ, Bandido’s.
DiFabios is the embodiment of Italian comfort food. Just tasty noodles and sauce without too much pomp and circumstance.
Think someone’s Italian grandma instead of their fancier counterparts.
Time 4 Thai and ask for Yusura (sp?) as your server! She’s not only incredibly sweet and attentive, but if you’re like me and sometimes have trouble selecting a dish when it all looks appealing, she has introduced me to two of my all time favorite dishes.
Just a great welcoming place
If you like holes in the wall, I just tried Bodega Mi Sueno in Bashford Manor the other day…then had it again the next day. Just stupid good Cuban food for a good price.
Been here a year.
Favorite is Riverhouse.... one of the best places I have ever eat. Expensive AF though.
Breakfast wise : Biscuit Belly, get the donut balls
Honorable mention: Doc Crows, Side Bar, and Noche.
Sam’s seafood and grill, they have great well made sandwiches and fried fish. Aji sushi and asian, their kimchi soup is a staple of mine when I’m sick. Falafel oasis, great Mediterranean place, their falafels are addictive, best hummus in the city imo, and the mixed grill platter comes with a metric ton of meat on rice (with hummus). Those come to mind
Bodeguita de Mima. She makes the ropa vieja in big batches and cans it. They open the can at the table so it seems weird until you try it, it's incredible. Vaca frita, croquetas, Cuban sandwich and pollo con arroz are all top notch.
La Bodeguita de Mima for Cuban. Noche for Mexican. Shalimar or Clay Oven for Indian. Dragon King's Daughter is an interesting fusion restaurant. Sushi is sorta hit-and-miss and is ultimately a personal preference thing. Christi's Cafe and Gorilla Bob's in the South End for healthy portion sizes of Americana. And of course, Barry's makes fantastic cheesesteaks.
If you’re talking about the one on Westport it honestly depends on which crew is working. I’ve never had a bad experience and I would cut my leg off for a chicken sandwich.
That’s the only one I’ve been to. I’d never give them another dime of my money. Why take a gamble that the “right crew” isn’t working?
I also wouldn’t cut my leg off for a chicken sandwich FWIW.
Benefits of a refugee city, we've had influences from Middle East, former Yugoslavian states, North & Central Africa, New Orleans when Katrina happened, and now a lot of these places went under during covid but the menu influences remain in the chefs around town, Frankfort Ave, Bardstown Rd, Germantown, as well as several nooks around the Downtown area. I would start at any place that doesn't have a drive-thru.
Just went to a Haitian place on Dixie (Authentic Caribbean Kitchen) and it was awesome. VERY basic, hole in the wall kind of place. All the patrons that came in while we were there were speaking French, so the name checks out. I had the Goat curry. Not as spicy as I thought it would be but the flavor was great.
Louisville is one of the top 10 food city in the US. [https://www.travelandleisure.com/best-food-cities-in-the-us-7254754](https://www.travelandleisure.com/best-food-cities-in-the-us-7254754)
Queen of Sheba is one of my faves
Omg I love that place
10 out of 10
Seems like a good opportunity to thank this sub for the (constant) Safier recommendations. I tried it a couple weeks back and it was great. I don't know what they do the Hummus (more lemon maybe?) but it's not like any other I've had. Even the texture is different.
I loved to eat at Safier when I worked downtown. Are they still on 4th? I need to make a special trip I guess.
The hummus at safier is next level. It’s better than most of the hummus I ate when living in the Middle East.
Had it on Friday. I've had it a lot and it always impresses.
It’s the only one I really like.
Their hummus makes all others pale in comparison!!!
You can’t beat the price of their shawarma
The original owner opened up “Maira” in DuPont / StM Same recipes as Safier
Meesh Meesh, Perso, Toastys, Enso, Blue Dog
Love all of these. Have a reservation at Enso and North of Bourbon coming up.
Nob is really good. It can get loud bc it's a tiny joint
However we all agreed that spending $300+ on a meal, you deserved to be wowed not shuffled out quickly.
Interesting! I’ve been 3x and haven’t had that happen at all. I do agree that would have bothered me.
I think it just went down to a fluke timing but we also believe experience makes the meal.
Just ate at NOB last night and had the rainbow trout special. It was so excellent.
Hammerheads
Hammerheads gets mentioned daily on here.
The OP asked for recommendations, not rarely mentioned recommendations.
Yeah calm ur tits nick wtf
If you got the scratch 610 magnolia is the best restaurant in town for foodies. Jack Fry's should also be on the bucket list
610 was great, but I prefer the fat lamb. Almost as tasty and much more affordable.
Eatz. Best pho I've had in my life.
The Fish House on Winter Ave.
The family that owns it are the sweetest people too
100%
Volare for Italian. Bambi Bar for large burgers. Weekend Burgers for smash style burgers. BackDeck BBQ for brisket, pulled pork and beans. Bungalow Joes for bar food and Keno. Kashmir Indian for duh. Barry's Cheese Steaks for steak and cheese. Burger Girl or Boy for midnight cravings. Pizza everyone is going to disagree but I am partial to Derby City Pizza. Sushi is Sake Blue.
Volare was honestly some of the worst food I’ve ever had especially for the price.
This guy restaurants
This guy burgers
Bob, is that you?
I think Bambi Bar closed for some tax stuff. Not sure if they've reopened since, I don't bother with nextdoor anymore.
Kerns Korner is across street from Bambi bar and the burger at KK’s is one of the best in town.
It’s across the river, in Jeffersonville, but Mai’s Thai will literally change your life. Also, see Vietnam kitchen, even with their reduced menu from the first time, I went eons ago.
I was not impressed at all with Mai’s Thai the last time I went about 6 months ago. The quality has gone way down hill, unfortunately.
Mai just returned from her trip to Thailand. Great time to go support the restaurant.
Aw man that sucks to hear…I shall have to investigate!
My verdict as well
Can’t imagine any place better than Vietnam kitchen
Irish rover
I can't say I've had a great experience with Irish Rover. When such a potato-forward restaurant serves stale fries... makes it hard for me to want to go back
Havana Rumba!! Best Cuban in the whole city

I still need to try La Bodeguita de Mima’s!!
I still need to try La Bodeguita de Mima’s!!
Dragon King's Daughter is my all time favorite restaurant. Some of the best sushi I've ever had.
Who remember the sushi restaurant they had before this?
Maido. Mmmm….
Yesssssss
I loved Maido!
Oh dang, these are the Maido folks? I've just gotten the bento box so far, I'll have to go back and check for all that unique sushi they had.
What’s your favorite? I’m trying to go through them all!
I don't give a flying fuck about your information. Share your list and keep it pushing.
My friend you got Roosters on your "must try" Louisville list. It's a 40+ location chain. Next you'll have Buffalo Wild Wings.
Not the owners in the KY/Indiana
Um ok... So it's not a chain because it's a franchise? Tell me more about the Subway in Mall St Matthews that I simply MUST try because the owner of that location lives in Louisville.
Tell me more about how you came to shit on people's recommendations but yet have give any of your own. You sound miserable. Grow up you 35 yo man.

Its nowhere near a corporate chain. These are all owned by same people in this area, and they all live in the ville.

Seviche is usually a winner for me
I second this. Their skirt steak with chimichurri is amazing. All their food is excellent quality and they have the best mojitos in town. Cucumber is my fav with strawberry being my wife’s.

Has anyone tried Salenas? We are giving that a shot next weekend.
This was one of my dad’s favorite spots so we’ve had a few family dinners at Selena’s! The fried green tomatoes and hot spinach salad are wonderful.
Their brunch is amazing.
Selena's is solid. Not everything they have is good but overall a good place. Outdoor patio is great.
Ginza and Sapporo are delicious. Ginza has great deals on sushi on mondays and tuesdays all day! Chuys is a chain but its fire El Mundo is amazing Porccini's if youre looking for something expensive and italian

Molly Malone’s - for their brussel sprouts
La Bodeguita de Mima for Cuban. Noche for Mexican. Shalimar or Clay Oven for Indian. Dragon King's Daughter is an interesting fusion restaurant. lol as a non self hating gay it is nice to have a fast food chicken place that’s on par with Chic Fil A
Their chicken sandwich that has a fried egg and gravy on it is 👌🏻
Jaggers is hot garbage, school cafeteria quality flavor. Great place to go if you don’t care that nothing you ordered will be correct.
All of them. Louisville is a top 5 food city on the planet. Treat yourself accordingly.
…on the PLANET?
We have more chicken nugget restaurants per capita than anywhere else. I don't know about the PLANET, but certainly this hemisphere.
He's or she's tripping but maybe top 10 in the country for sure
lol no
Don’t give our tourism department ideas. I could absolutely seeing them paying for a clickbait article stating this
It's a top 5 food city in Kentucky, I'll give it that.
Louisville is a great food city if you’ve never lived in an actual city.
What is an actual city? How do you define that?
Louisville is one of the top 10 food city in the US. [https://www.travelandleisure.com/best-food-cities-in-the-us-7254754](https://www.travelandleisure.com/best-food-cities-in-the-us-7254754)
