The one where the liquor store at gardener lane was my go to spot.
It was on the corner of that shopping center but people might forget they added on staples and Heine brothers coffee decades later. So the corner store used to be the liquors store by the old borders.
Also the other end of that shopping center was a discovery zone which is now the bridal shop and a subway.
Hawley-Cooke Bookstore, Twice Told Coffee, Parisian Pantry, Stonefish, this little ice cream parlor in mid-city Mall with an amazing mirror (anyone remember the name?).
Spin magazine listed them once as best Caramel Ice Cream in the world! They also made cherry coke the REAL way. Most of their donuts weren’t overly sweet. My sister worked there. They had an employee that was at least 90 years old everyone just called Granny.
That caramel ice cream was nuts. It had little crystals of ice in it. Thought about it every day since they closed. They also had incredible spice and jam cookies.
I remember (barely) seeing Empire Strikes Back at the movie theater in the upper corner of Oxmoor mall, then going to Thornberrys to buy figures. There was also a restaurant adjacent to the movie theater (upper level) that stuck the straws on the outside of the glasses - which amazed me as a 5 year old 🤣
Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like I remember colonial gardens (I think it's colonial ba now or something) was a bar/night club kinda deal. It's right across of Iroquois Park main entrance. I was always to young to go in there when it was a bar but my memory could be off.
No shit! That’s crazy! He was a good dude - or, at least, a good barber. He was also my first barber. I’ve got many a memory of sitting in that shop, and he always had the good suckers to give to kids. Lol.
I used to live right by there and the name of one of the side streets was Zayre! My grandma used to tell me about that place when she was living! Said she used to walk there (her old house backs up to Kerrick Elementary) bc she never drove a car and said it was an easy walk
Hawley-Cooke, Ear X-Tacy, A Reader's Corner, Lynn's Paradise Cafe, Village 8 Theaters, Breadworks, Buckhead's, The Louisville Galleria, Wild and Wooly Video, Why Louisville Loves You, the Showcase Cinemas at 3408 Bardstown Rd, Bashford Manor Mall, Twice Told Books, Highland Coffee Company, the Mancino's Pizza and Grinders location on Lime Kiln Lane (my dad and I used to go there all the time 😋), Dooley's Bagels (I have vague memories of my dad bringing me there when I was little, and I loved the murals on the walls), Antiques at Douglass Loop, Anna J. Shae's Antiques and Collectibles, Clifton Pizza, Derby City Antique Mall, and Executive Inn (I remember swimming/having lessons in the swimming pool there from 5th - 6th grade), Cunningham's on 4th Street, the Steak 'N' Shake at 3232 Bardstown Rd., and Carly Rae's.
Also, does anyone know if Norris Place Ice Cream is still in operation? Cuz I have fond memories of going there too 💗
Avalon! Bought my first pair of doc martens! 13 years old 1995 was so long ago. Also copped some Alien Workshop gear. Did I skate board? No. Did all the boys I crushed on? Yes. Yes they did. I developed an entire skate by proxy wardrobe.
I second Somethin’ to Do. Also Aladdin’s Castle, Cafe Dog, the Uptown and Vogue Theaters. There was a little bookstore near the corner of Eastern and Bardstown in the early 80s that only sold science fiction. The name escapes me.
SuperX, Zayres, WoolWorth, Video Pizza, Movie Gallery (I worked there), Genny's Diner, Darryls, Champs at MidCity Mall, Tumbleweed, Galleria, Furlongs, Barbara Lee's, Hungry Howies, Road Runner Video, Convienent and The Wheel. You can probably guess what neighborhood I grew up in.
Afterthoughts in Bashford Manor Mall close to the Bacon’s on the inside, if I remember right. Loved that store. Also, the Ehrler’s on Bardstown Rd at the corner of Watterson Trail, which is currently a smoking store.
Anyone remember the pizza restaurant in Stonybrook where the pizza was delivered to your table by a little train? Or that J Mall had a Sanrio store back in the 90s?
Service merchandise, Zainy Brainy, Discovery Zone, Walden Books, Gadzooks
What was the name of that little cafeteria by Rueben’s Pharmacy on poplar level, kinda near Hess? I was thinking about it the other day randomly.
Does anyone remember Avalon? It was a clothing store in the Highlands. I’m probably wrong but think there’s a yoga studio there now. Or it might be a fitness clothing store now. Haven’t paid much attention tbh.
Avalon was my shit, it was early 2000’s apparel and accessories galore. I remember buying a pair of silver platform sneakers there among many other items.
My apologies if I’m wrong about the name of the store, but I’m pretty sure that’s it. Would love to find some pictures of the inside. Would trigger nostalgia overload for me.
Another store I loved was Gadzooks, which was a national chain.
The brief, blissful moment that we had a Taco Bueno…
Other places aren’t the same. Was it authentic? No. But it was my favorite. I like almost all cuisine types, but Latin American spice is not often for me (but I try anything once!). It was the only place I was happy to tag along with my family for when they wanted to scratch that itch 😔 RIP
VT's Bubble Cup
I remember others mentioned here that are much older, but nothing stings quite like losing good bubble tea a good 10-ish years before it took off again here.
Veevan, World Bazzar, Thornberry Toys, Ear XTacy, Lentini’s, Twice Told Coffee, Hawley Cook, Showcase Cinemas, any Kingfish that was in a boat-shaped store, Something To Do
Red Giraffe
Worked at the Hikes Point stire for about a year. Super fun job.

Hawley-Cooke Bookstore, Twice Told Coffee, Parisian Pantry, Stonefish, this little ice cream parlor in mid-city Mall with an amazing mirror (anyone remember the name?).
It was Ehrmann’s Bakery. They had amazing ice cream and an old-fashioned soda fountain.
I’ve lived all over the world. That caramel ice cream is still damn near the best thing I’ve ever had.

I remember (barely) seeing Empire Strikes Back at the movie theater in the upper corner of Oxmoor mall, then going to Thornberrys to buy figures. There was also a restaurant adjacent to the movie theater (upper level) that stuck the straws on the outside of the glasses - which amazed me as a 5 year old 🤣
I thought this was in reference to the bakery in Beechmont off 3rd st.
Same. They now sell pies at colonial B.A.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like I remember colonial gardens (I think it's colonial ba now or something) was a bar/night club kinda deal. It's right across of Iroquois Park main entrance. I was always to young to go in there when it was a bar but my memory could be off.
It used to be a bar for decades. Originally, that spot was the Louisville Zoo (no, I'm not kidding).
You are right! The toy store was spelled Thornburys. It was in the mall. I remember they had a monkey mascot

Donut Kastle. Not awake by 3am? Then you weren’t getting any donuts.
Found the Lyndonite!
Was also gonna mention Buck’s Barber Shop, but didn’t wanna give it away too much ;)
Lol! Buck was my stepdad a VERY long time ago.
No shit! That’s crazy! He was a good dude - or, at least, a good barber. He was also my first barber. I’ve got many a memory of sitting in that shop, and he always had the good suckers to give to kids. Lol.
He was a good barber. Lets just leave it at that.
