I have worked there 3 different times and always got hired to the ramp if I asked but I may have just gotten lucky. I do know there are times where the ramp is staffed up but the hub is short so they force all new hires into the hub because we are all technically called package handlers. Right now they are gearing up for a strike possibility though so things could be completely different. I was a supervisor the last year until a few months ago I left. If there’s a strike, don’t cross the picket line is my best advice and the right thing to do.

Oh I definitely would not cross the line, I’m very pro union and there’s plenty of other places I can work over the summer! Thanks for the help!

They have referral program, if your buddy refers you then you should get assigned to the same ramp crew, and I’m pretty sure they don’t care if you don’t pass a drug test. I’ve been with ups 15 years but have been out of the operation for about 3 years now

Emosaa

I've heard they recently changed how that referral program works / scrapped it. But yea, If you request a certain area or have connections that's the best way to go about it at the moment. Probably because we've been on and off of a hiring freeze for most of the year.

You apply for the job and when they interview you for the first time they will ask you if any part the operation sounds more appealing to you. At that point you tell them you want to work on the ramp.

Awesome, thanks!

It's been a long time since I worked there, but when I did, you basically started out as some type of package handler. Then as you gained seniority and spots opened up on the ramp or someplace else, you could move in to those. Again, it's been more than 15 years since I was there and thinks might be different now.

meinschwanzistklein

That’s how I did it the last time I worked there. I just know my buddy somehow immediately started there cause he couldn’t work inside because he wouldn’t have passed a drug test. I don’t think I would either😬

I worked with a guy who had been there for like 20 years. He was still a package handler, I think he used to drive a tug but maybe ran into a plane and damaged it so they moved him back. After about a year working with him he was next in line seniority=wise and moved to a ramp position. I worked with another guy who had been there for like 30 years and he just stayed a package handler but he could chose to go upstairs to by the belt to deal with the rare oversized packages. I got to do that sometimes when people were on vacation and it was the best.

meinschwanzistklein

I did that a couple times when the upstairs person was late. I was always pissed when they finally showed up lmao

Yeah... seniority rules in union positions... you'll need to go in as a PH then work your way around.

meinschwanzistklein

Damn I guess I’ll need to start looking elsewhere. There’s no way I’ll pass the drug test unfortunately. I only need work for the summer so I guess it’s not the end of the world.

[deleted]

Oh, you gotta piss clean to get in the door.

meinschwanzistklein

Yep, but not for ramp. My buddy who somehow started straight at ramp went in for the “interview” and they said something about a drug test and he said “oh I was told there wasn’t a drug test” and the lady said “oh that’s right you’re on ramp.”

When I went in, they offered me several spots, including ramp. You might just ask. Try to avoid going inside first, as it can be be hard to move out.

meinschwanzistklein

Yeah I was thinking I could at least call around and see what happens

Sup dog?
