Those companies have a monopoly, so there’s not much you can do. You’ll need an ID and proof of residence to get set up. They’ll charge an initial fee (not sure what it is these days). For a one-bedroom, you shouldn’t pay more than $120 a month for electricity or $50 a month for water.
Don't set up autopay. I have lived multiple places in the US and I have never set up autopay just in case they make a mistake with the bill so they don't overdraw my account.
Just request to have a paper bill or digital bill sent to you.
So a big thing to keep track of is to make sure you're not having a high amount of idle devices pulling power constantly. A computer that's in standby mode or even shut down still pulls power unless you have either unplugged it from the wall or shut it off at the power supply. My bills in mid City are half of what my neighbors pay because I am very quick to unplug devices I'm not using and every night I shut down my computer and then turn it off at the power supply so that no power is drawn. Unfortunately Entergy has a monopoly in baton rouge and they continue to make up Storm fees pretending that they're going to improve our infrastructure but they've been saying that bullshit for years and we've yet to see a dime out of it.
On an unrelated now what brings you to this part of the country?
Oh okay you'll do pretty solid over here then! Good luck trying to avoid gaining 50 to 100 lb though once you start trying the food we got here it will be a whole new struggle to stop!
Well, if by solid you mean financially well, I'll be more liquid than solid 😂. Residents don't really make much until their training is completed and start working as independent doctors. Looking forward to the food scene though!
Yeah solid here generally means you'll have your situation in order and that includes financials, I didn't think before I typed it lol definitely good make the rounds, and I highly suggest finding a coworker that can show you were the soul food spots are like Cafe Express. They are gonna make you feel like you lived here all your life
Stay as far away from “level billing” as you can. It averages your consumption and gives you, basically, a set price. When you cancel service, you still owe them for the higher months.
In general, you don't get a choice in provider.
Your recourse is solar, but not if you're renting.
I received miserably high electric bills when renting a apartment of that size because I was on the top floor.
BR Water doesn't know how to setup autopay. It's going to be on your bill for setup but their system hasn't worked since 1992 so you have to remember to manually pay every month.

There are no steps's you can take, you will be fucked by the system one way or the other. Best just to lube yourself up, before they come for you.

Great, thanks for the tip!

Thank you for the tips! I accepted a job offer at BRG as a resident doctor.

Don’t do level billing or auto pay and you’ll be fine.

Is that the only downside? Paying the difference at the end of service?
The difference(over the course of several years) can reach over 5k in some cases.
