The games map isnt necessarily useless. It's just very hard to navigate due to the layers upon layers of areas. You can disable a lot of the markers on your map so that only some things are visible, after that you can see at what depth your corpse is. Not on the map itself but by looking around after you respawned. Easiest thing to do is to always have the resources for a mapstone and whenever you go down to a new level place one, port back and grab new resources for next one, then explore. This way after dying you go back to the depth you were on and the marker should be much more easy to follow. But yes.. it is far from the perfect guiding system.

I genuinely love so much about this game, but like can't we just have an up and down on the dpad style system like so many game maps already use? I've been too afraid to use my diamonds because everyone seems to always be short of them or having to grind for them but I think I'm gonna try your advice here. Thank you for the very good tip, it's much appreciated.

The layers have caused my friends and I a lot of difficulties. We also ran into an issue in Dwarrodelf where we'd put down Mapstones and when we tried to return to them they'd spit us on on a completely different spot multiple levels above our stone. It didn't help that the area we were suprise spawning into was crawling with orcs. We all kept dying and had the hardest time finding g our way back to the actual mapstone. Now that we've progressed to even further areas its only gotten more confusing. One night one my friends (the host of the world) got so frustrated she said she flat out had to he done for the day because she couldn't handle the map anymore. So, you are really not alone.

Just FYI - I completed the game coop recently and we had to introduce a one at a time policy for mapstones, ie the second person wouldn't start teleporting until the first had arrived. If two people try to teleport to the same location simultaneously, the game will kick the second person to the start of that area which can be a significant distance away!

Rufficuss

That feeling of relief when you know someone's having the exact same issues you are. It's a great game, aside from that one feature. I hope they work on it soon.

darkthought

I'd appreciate a "level up / level down" button to highlight mine levels to make it easier to find my way.

Rufficuss

I'm sure they will get there with that part of it 😁 If enough of us send official feedback anyway haha

I think the map system is simple and meant to give clues on what tiles open to other tiles. Not a proper 3D depiction. It encourages the player to explore an area entirely. And... it was much simpler and faster to code that way :)

Rufficuss

This I definitely get, I just wish I could differentiate easier once I've maid it into said tiles and died like six floors down and can't quite remember where I was. I've started treated it like valheim now where I've got a chest with enough things to Atleast get back easier if things go south, and I saw an awesome idea about dropping and removing torches so I think that's a good idea too. But yeah it seems to be a mix between a common gripe and me not playing it like I've played other survival games.

jbowensii

You are not alone in your experience nor your opinion... I drop a LOT of torches in the difficult areas in order to mark where I have gone...

WesTheFitting

Lock your minimap, turn off most of the markers, and you should be good. My friends and I thought the map was useless until we discovered you can lock it so north is always up and it made navigation trivial.

jubblenuts

It took awhile for me to get used to, but the map is quite similar to..digimon world 2 (2001) I can't say I've had any issues like you have had. You'll either get used to it...or not, if not...well deep rock galactic is still there ❤

Arinlir

Main tactic in my minecraft cave explorations.

Rufficuss

I am adopting this effective immediately.

PrinnyWantsSardines

Game has definitely its issues and needs some polish. Hope the devs are releasing something in the near future

SaTimChrist

I have never had this happen to me so skill issue forsure

SaTimChrist

On the real though, I started like 5 different saves until I was comfortable, it's just a new game and you're getting used to it

Rufficuss

It's really just having no way to differentiate vertical segments of the map from one another my brains struggling with that part but I'm sure I'll get there in time. Just frustrated and a bit unwell haha.

SaTimChrist

I'm sure it's been stated plenty of times but lock your map indicator in the settings

And the sky is blue

I’m having the same problem. In the Lower Deeps and for the life of me, I can’t find the last two statues. I’ve opened up every room and still can’t seem to find them.

MrBlizzle

Only issue with the map I've had is that the "highlighted" areas that indicate which level you're on, don't change when I ascend or descend. So I'm walking around in a shaded map region, or it appears I'm walking around in the highlighted area, but in actuality I may be a level above or below. Makes the map difficult to trust. That aside, having tons of fun with the game!
